وَإِذْ

And when

wa-idh

قُلْنَا

We said

qul'nā

ٱدْخُلُوا۟

Enter

ud'khulū

هَـٰذِهِ

this

hādhihi

ٱلْقَرْيَةَ

town

l-qaryata

فَكُلُوا۟

then eat

fakulū

مِنْهَا

from

min'hā

حَيْثُ

wherever

ḥaythu

شِئْتُمْ

you wish[ed]

shi'tum

رَغَدًۭا

abundantly

raghadan

وَٱدْخُلُوا۟

and enter

wa-ud'khulū

ٱلْبَابَ

the gate

l-bāba

سُجَّدًۭا

prostrating

sujjadan

وَقُولُوا۟

And say

waqūlū

حِطَّةٌۭ

Repentance

ḥiṭṭatun

نَّغْفِرْ

We will forgive

naghfir

لَكُمْ

for you

lakum

خَطَـٰيَـٰكُمْ ۚ

your sins

khaṭāyākum

وَسَنَزِيدُ

And We will increase

wasanazīdu

ٱلْمُحْسِنِينَ

the good-doers (in reward)

l-muḥ'sinīna

٥٨

And [recall] when We said, "Enter this city [i.e., Jerusalem] and eat from it wherever you will in [ease and] abundance, and enter the gate bowing humbly1 and say, 'Relieve us of our burdens [i.e., sins].' We will [then] forgive your sins for you, and We will increase the doers of good [in goodness and reward]."

فَبَدَّلَ

But changed

fabaddala

ٱلَّذِينَ

those who

alladhīna

ظَلَمُوا۟

wronged

ẓalamū

قَوْلًا

(the) word

qawlan

غَيْرَ

other (than)

ghayra

ٱلَّذِى

(that) which

alladhī

قِيلَ

was said

qīla

لَهُمْ

to them

lahum

فَأَنزَلْنَا

so We sent down

fa-anzalnā

عَلَى

upon

ʿalā

ٱلَّذِينَ

those who

alladhīna

ظَلَمُوا۟

wronged

ẓalamū

رِجْزًۭا

a punishment

rij'zan

مِّنَ

from

mina

ٱلسَّمَآءِ

the sky

l-samāi

بِمَا

because

bimā

كَانُوا۟

they were

kānū

يَفْسُقُونَ

defiantly disobeying

yafsuqūna

٥٩

But those who wronged changed [those words] to a statement other than that which had been said to them, so We sent down upon those who wronged a punishment [i.e., plague] from the sky because they were defiantly disobeying.

۞ وَإِذِ

And when

wa-idhi

ٱسْتَسْقَىٰ

asked (for) water

is'tasqā

مُوسَىٰ

Musa

mūsā

لِقَوْمِهِۦ

for his people

liqawmihi

فَقُلْنَا

[so] We said

faqul'nā

ٱضْرِب

Strike

iḍ'rib

بِّعَصَاكَ

with your staff

biʿaṣāka

ٱلْحَجَرَ ۖ

the stone

l-ḥajara

فَٱنفَجَرَتْ

Then gushed forth

fa-infajarat

مِنْهُ

from it

min'hu

ٱثْنَتَا

(of)

ith'natā

عَشْرَةَ

twelve

ʿashrata

عَيْنًۭا ۖ

springs

ʿaynan

قَدْ

Indeed

qad

عَلِمَ

knew

ʿalima

كُلُّ

all

kullu

أُنَاسٍۢ

(the) people

unāsin

مَّشْرَبَهُمْ ۖ

their drinking place

mashrabahum

كُلُوا۟

Eat

kulū

وَٱشْرَبُوا۟

and drink

wa-ish'rabū

مِن

from

min

رِّزْقِ

(the) provision (of)

riz'qi

ٱللَّهِ

Allah

l-lahi

وَلَا

and (do) not

walā

تَعْثَوْا۟

act wickedly

taʿthaw

فِى

in

ٱلْأَرْضِ

the earth

l-arḍi

مُفْسِدِينَ

spreading corruption

muf'sidīna

٦٠

And [recall] when Moses prayed for water for his people, so We said, "Strike with your staff the stone." And there gushed forth from it twelve springs, and every people [i.e., tribe] knew its watering place. "Eat and drink from the provision of Allāh, and do not commit abuse on the earth, spreading corruption."

وَإِذْ

And when

wa-idh

قُلْتُمْ

you said

qul'tum

يَـٰمُوسَىٰ

O Musa

yāmūsā

لَن

Never (will)

lan

نَّصْبِرَ

we endure

naṣbira

عَلَىٰ

[on]

ʿalā

طَعَامٍۢ

food

ṭaʿāmin

وَٰحِدٍۢ

(of) one (kind)

wāḥidin

فَٱدْعُ

so pray

fa-ud'ʿu

لَنَا

for us

lanā

رَبَّكَ

(to) your Lord

rabbaka

يُخْرِجْ

to bring forth

yukh'rij

لَنَا

for us

lanā

مِمَّا

out of what

mimmā

تُنۢبِتُ

grows

tunbitu

ٱلْأَرْضُ

the earth

l-arḍu

مِنۢ

of

min

بَقْلِهَا

its herbs

baqlihā

وَقِثَّآئِهَا

[and] its cucumbers

waqithāihā

وَفُومِهَا

[and] its garlic

wafūmihā

وَعَدَسِهَا

[and] its lentils

waʿadasihā

وَبَصَلِهَا ۖ

and its onions

wabaṣalihā

قَالَ

He said

qāla

أَتَسْتَبْدِلُونَ

Would you exchange

atastabdilūna

ٱلَّذِى

that which

alladhī

هُوَ

[it]

huwa

أَدْنَىٰ

(is) inferior

adnā

بِٱلَّذِى

for that which

bi-alladhī

هُوَ

[it]

huwa

خَيْرٌ ۚ

(is) better

khayrun

ٱهْبِطُوا۟

Go down

ih'biṭū

مِصْرًۭا

(to) a city

miṣ'ran

فَإِنَّ

so indeed

fa-inna

لَكُم

for you

lakum

مَّا

(is) what

سَأَلْتُمْ ۗ

you have asked (for)

sa-altum

وَضُرِبَتْ

And were struck

waḍuribat

عَلَيْهِمُ

on them

ʿalayhimu

ٱلذِّلَّةُ

the humiliation

l-dhilatu

وَٱلْمَسْكَنَةُ

and the misery

wal-maskanatu

وَبَآءُو

and they drew on themselves

wabāū

بِغَضَبٍۢ

wrath

bighaḍabin

مِّنَ

of

mina

ٱللَّهِ ۗ

Allah

l-lahi

ذَٰلِكَ

That (was)

dhālika

بِأَنَّهُمْ

because they

bi-annahum

كَانُوا۟

used to

kānū

يَكْفُرُونَ

disbelieve

yakfurūna

بِـَٔايَـٰتِ

in (the) Signs

biāyāti

ٱللَّهِ

(of) Allah

l-lahi

وَيَقْتُلُونَ

and kill

wayaqtulūna

ٱلنَّبِيِّـۧنَ

the Prophets

l-nabiyīna

بِغَيْرِ

without (any)

bighayri

ٱلْحَقِّ ۗ

[the] right

l-ḥaqi

ذَٰلِكَ

That

dhālika

بِمَا

(was) because

bimā

عَصَوا۟

they disobeyed

ʿaṣaw

وَّكَانُوا۟

and they were

wakānū

يَعْتَدُونَ

transgressing

yaʿtadūna

٦١

And [recall] when you said, "O Moses, we can never endure one [kind of] food. So call upon your Lord to bring forth for us from the earth its green herbs and its cucumbers and its garlic and its lentils and its onions." [Moses] said, "Would you exchange what is better for what is less? Go into [any] settlement and indeed, you will have what you have asked." And they were covered with humiliation and poverty and returned with anger from Allāh [upon them]. That was because they [repeatedly] disbelieved in the signs of Allāh and killed the prophets without right. That was because they disobeyed and were [habitually] transgressing.
