Al-'Insān

The Man

الانسان

هَلْ

Has

hal

أَتَىٰ

(there) come

atā

عَلَى

upon

ʿalā

ٱلْإِنسَـٰنِ

man

l-insāni

حِينٌۭ

a period

ḥīnun

مِّنَ

of

mina

ٱلدَّهْرِ

time

l-dahri

لَمْ

not

lam

يَكُن

he was

yakun

شَيْـًۭٔا

a thing

shayan

مَّذْكُورًا

mentioned

madhkūran

١

Has there [not] come upon man a period of time when he was not a thing [even] mentioned?

— Saheeh International

إِنَّا

Indeed, We

innā

خَلَقْنَا

[We] created

khalaqnā

ٱلْإِنسَـٰنَ

man

l-insāna

مِن

from

min

نُّطْفَةٍ

a semen-drop

nuṭ'fatin

أَمْشَاجٍۢ

a mixture

amshājin

نَّبْتَلِيهِ

(that) We test him

nabtalīhi

فَجَعَلْنَـٰهُ

so We made (for) him

fajaʿalnāhu

سَمِيعًۢا

hearing

samīʿan

بَصِيرًا

and sight

baṣīran

٢

Indeed, We created man from a sperm-drop mixture1 that We may try him; and We made him hearing and seeing.

— Saheeh International

إِنَّا

Indeed, We

innā

هَدَيْنَـٰهُ

guided him

hadaynāhu

ٱلسَّبِيلَ

(to) the way

l-sabīla

إِمَّا

whether

immā

شَاكِرًۭا

(he) be grateful

shākiran

وَإِمَّا

and whether

wa-immā

كَفُورًا

(he) be ungrateful

kafūran

٣

Indeed, We guided him to the way, be he grateful or be he ungrateful.

— Saheeh International

إِنَّآ

Indeed, We

innā

أَعْتَدْنَا

[We] have prepared

aʿtadnā

لِلْكَـٰفِرِينَ

for the disbelievers

lil'kāfirīna

سَلَـٰسِلَا۟

chains

salāsilā

وَأَغْلَـٰلًۭا

and shackles

wa-aghlālan

وَسَعِيرًا

and a Blazing Fire

wasaʿīran

٤

Indeed, We have prepared for the disbelievers chains and shackles and a blaze.

— Saheeh International

إِنَّ

Indeed

inna

ٱلْأَبْرَارَ

the righteous

l-abrāra

يَشْرَبُونَ

will drink

yashrabūna

مِن

from

min

كَأْسٍۢ

a cup

kasin

كَانَ

is

kāna

مِزَاجُهَا

its mixture

mizājuhā

كَافُورًا

(of) Kafur

kāfūran

٥

Indeed, the righteous will drink from a cup [of wine] whose mixture is of Kāfūr,1

— Saheeh International

عَيْنًۭا

A spring

ʿaynan

يَشْرَبُ

will drink

yashrabu

بِهَا

from it

bihā

عِبَادُ

(the) slaves

ʿibādu

ٱللَّهِ

(of) Allah

l-lahi

يُفَجِّرُونَهَا

causing it to gush forth

yufajjirūnahā

تَفْجِيرًۭا

abundantly

tafjīran

٦

A spring of which the [righteous] servants of Allāh will drink; they will make it gush forth in force [and abundance].

— Saheeh International

يُوفُونَ

They fulfill

yūfūna

بِٱلنَّذْرِ

the vows

bil-nadhri

وَيَخَافُونَ

and fear

wayakhāfūna

يَوْمًۭا

a Day

yawman

كَانَ

(which) is

kāna

شَرُّهُۥ

its evil

sharruhu

مُسْتَطِيرًۭا

widespread

mus'taṭīran

٧

They [are those who] fulfill [their] vows and fear a Day whose evil will be widespread.

— Saheeh International

وَيُطْعِمُونَ

And they feed

wayuṭ'ʿimūna

ٱلطَّعَامَ

the food

l-ṭaʿāma

عَلَىٰ

in spite of

ʿalā

حُبِّهِۦ

love (for) it

ḥubbihi

مِسْكِينًۭا

(to the) needy

mis'kīnan

وَيَتِيمًۭا

and (the) orphan

wayatīman

وَأَسِيرًا

and (the) captive

wa-asīran

٨

And they give food in spite of love for it1 to the needy, the orphan, and the captive,

— Saheeh International

إِنَّمَا

Only

innamā

نُطْعِمُكُمْ

we feed you

nuṭ'ʿimukum

لِوَجْهِ

for (the) Countenance

liwajhi

ٱللَّهِ

(of) Allah

l-lahi

لَا

Not

نُرِيدُ

we desire

nurīdu

مِنكُمْ

from you

minkum

جَزَآءًۭ

any reward

jazāan

وَلَا

and not

walā

شُكُورًا

thanks

shukūran

٩

[Saying], "We feed you only for the face [i.e., approval] of Allāh. We wish not from you reward or gratitude.

— Saheeh International

إِنَّا

Indeed, we

innā

نَخَافُ

fear

nakhāfu

مِن

from

min

رَّبِّنَا

our Lord

rabbinā

يَوْمًا

a Day

yawman

عَبُوسًۭا

harsh

ʿabūsan

قَمْطَرِيرًۭا

and distressful

qamṭarīran

١٠

Indeed, We fear from our Lord a Day austere and distressful."

— Saheeh International

فَوَقَىٰهُمُ

But will protect them

fawaqāhumu

ٱللَّهُ

Allah

l-lahu

شَرَّ

(from the) evil

sharra

ذَٰلِكَ

(of) that

dhālika

ٱلْيَوْمِ

Day

l-yawmi

وَلَقَّىٰهُمْ

and will cause them to meet

walaqqāhum

نَضْرَةًۭ

radiance

naḍratan

وَسُرُورًۭا

and happiness

wasurūran

١١

So Allāh will protect them from the evil of that Day and give them radiance and happiness

— Saheeh International

وَجَزَىٰهُم

And will reward them

wajazāhum

بِمَا

because

bimā

صَبَرُوا۟

they were patient

ṣabarū

جَنَّةًۭ

(with) a Garden

jannatan

وَحَرِيرًۭا

and silk

waḥarīran

١٢

And will reward them for what they patiently endured [with] a garden [in Paradise] and silk [garments].

— Saheeh International

مُّتَّكِـِٔينَ

Reclining

muttakiīna

فِيهَا

therein

fīhā

عَلَى

on

ʿalā

ٱلْأَرَآئِكِ ۖ

couches

l-arāiki

لَا

Not

يَرَوْنَ

they will see

yarawna

فِيهَا

therein

fīhā

شَمْسًۭا

sun

shamsan

وَلَا

and not

walā

زَمْهَرِيرًۭا

freezing cold

zamharīran

١٣

[They will be] reclining therein on adorned couches. They will not see therein any [burning] sun or [freezing] cold.

— Saheeh International

وَدَانِيَةً

And near

wadāniyatan

عَلَيْهِمْ

above them

ʿalayhim

ظِلَـٰلُهَا

(are) its shades

ẓilāluhā

وَذُلِّلَتْ

and will hang low

wadhullilat

قُطُوفُهَا

its cluster of fruits

quṭūfuhā

تَذْلِيلًۭا

dangling low

tadhlīlan

١٤

And near above them are its shades, and its [fruit] to be picked will be lowered in compliance.

— Saheeh International

وَيُطَافُ

And will be circulated

wayuṭāfu

عَلَيْهِم

among them

ʿalayhim

بِـَٔانِيَةٍۢ

vessels

biāniyatin

مِّن

of

min

فِضَّةٍۢ

silver

fiḍḍatin

وَأَكْوَابٍۢ

and cups

wa-akwābin

كَانَتْ

(that) are

kānat

قَوَارِيرَا۠

(of) crystal

qawārīrā

١٥

And there will be circulated among them vessels of silver and cups having been [created] clear [as glass],

— Saheeh International

قَوَارِيرَا۟

Crystal-clear

qawārīrā

مِن

of

min

فِضَّةٍۢ

silver

fiḍḍatin

قَدَّرُوهَا

They will determine its

qaddarūhā

تَقْدِيرًۭا

measure

taqdīran

١٦

Clear glasses [made] from silver of which they have determined the measure.

— Saheeh International

وَيُسْقَوْنَ

And they will be given to drink

wayus'qawna

فِيهَا

therein

fīhā

كَأْسًۭا

a cup

kasan

كَانَ

is

kāna

مِزَاجُهَا

its mixture

mizājuhā

زَنجَبِيلًا

(of) Zanjabil

zanjabīlan

١٧

And they will be given to drink a cup [of wine] whose mixture is of ginger

— Saheeh International

عَيْنًۭا

A spring

ʿaynan

فِيهَا

therein

fīhā

تُسَمَّىٰ

named

tusammā

سَلْسَبِيلًۭا

Salsabil

salsabīlan

١٨

[From] a fountain within it [i.e., Paradise] named Salsabeel.

— Saheeh International

۞ وَيَطُوفُ

And will circulate

wayaṭūfu

عَلَيْهِمْ

among them

ʿalayhim

وِلْدَٰنٌۭ

young boys

wil'dānun

مُّخَلَّدُونَ

made eternal

mukhalladūna

إِذَا

When

idhā

رَأَيْتَهُمْ

you see them

ra-aytahum

حَسِبْتَهُمْ

you would think them

ḥasib'tahum

لُؤْلُؤًۭا

(to be) pearls

lu'lu-an

مَّنثُورًۭا

scattered

manthūran

١٩

There will circulate among them young boys made eternal. When you see them, you would think them [as beautiful as] scattered pearls.

— Saheeh International

وَإِذَا

And when

wa-idhā

رَأَيْتَ

you look

ra-ayta

ثَمَّ

then

thamma

رَأَيْتَ

you will see

ra-ayta

نَعِيمًۭا

blessings

naʿīman

وَمُلْكًۭا

and a kingdom

wamul'kan

كَبِيرًا

great

kabīran

٢٠

And when you look there [in Paradise], you will see pleasure and great dominion.

— Saheeh International

عَـٰلِيَهُمْ

Upon them

ʿāliyahum

ثِيَابُ

(will be) garments

thiyābu

سُندُسٍ

(of) fine silk

sundusin

خُضْرٌۭ

green

khuḍ'run

وَإِسْتَبْرَقٌۭ ۖ

and heavy brocade

wa-is'tabraqun

وَحُلُّوٓا۟

And they will be adorned

waḥullū

أَسَاوِرَ

(with) bracelets

asāwira

مِن

of

min

فِضَّةٍۢ

silver

fiḍḍatin

وَسَقَىٰهُمْ

and will give them to drink

wasaqāhum

رَبُّهُمْ

their Lord

rabbuhum

شَرَابًۭا

a drink

sharāban

طَهُورًا

pure

ṭahūran

٢١

Upon them [i.e., the inhabitants] will be green garments of fine silk and brocade. And they will be adorned with bracelets of silver, and their Lord will give them a purifying drink.

— Saheeh International

إِنَّ

Indeed

inna

هَـٰذَا

this

hādhā

كَانَ

is

kāna

لَكُمْ

for you

lakum

جَزَآءًۭ

a reward

jazāan

وَكَانَ

and has been

wakāna

سَعْيُكُم

your effort

saʿyukum

مَّشْكُورًا

appreciated

mashkūran

٢٢

[And it will be said], "Indeed, this is for you a reward, and your effort has been appreciated."

— Saheeh International

إِنَّا

Indeed, We

innā

نَحْنُ

[We]

naḥnu

نَزَّلْنَا

[We] revealed

nazzalnā

عَلَيْكَ

to you

ʿalayka

ٱلْقُرْءَانَ

the Quran

l-qur'āna

تَنزِيلًۭا

progressively

tanzīlan

٢٣

Indeed, it is We who have sent down to you, [O Muḥammad], the Qur’ān progressively.

— Saheeh International

فَٱصْبِرْ

So be patient

fa-iṣ'bir

لِحُكْمِ

for (the) Command

liḥuk'mi

رَبِّكَ

(of) your Lord

rabbika

وَلَا

and (do) not

walā

تُطِعْ

obey

tuṭiʿ

مِنْهُمْ

from them

min'hum

ءَاثِمًا

any sinner

āthiman

أَوْ

or

aw

كَفُورًۭا

disbeliever

kafūran

٢٤

So be patient for the decision of your Lord and do not obey from among them a sinner or ungrateful [disbeliever].

— Saheeh International

وَٱذْكُرِ

And remember

wa-udh'kuri

ٱسْمَ

(the) name

is'ma

رَبِّكَ

(of) your Lord

rabbika

بُكْرَةًۭ

morning

buk'ratan

وَأَصِيلًۭا

and evening

wa-aṣīlan

٢٥

And mention the name of your Lord [in prayer] morning and evening

— Saheeh International

وَمِنَ

And of

wamina

ٱلَّيْلِ

the night

al-layli

فَٱسْجُدْ

prostrate

fa-us'jud

لَهُۥ

to Him

lahu

وَسَبِّحْهُ

and glorify Him

wasabbiḥ'hu

لَيْلًۭا

a night

laylan

طَوِيلًا

long

ṭawīlan

٢٦

And during the night prostrate to Him and exalt [i.e., praise] Him a long [part of the] night.

— Saheeh International

إِنَّ

Indeed

inna

هَـٰٓؤُلَآءِ

these

hāulāi

يُحِبُّونَ

love

yuḥibbūna

ٱلْعَاجِلَةَ

the immediate

l-ʿājilata

وَيَذَرُونَ

and leave

wayadharūna

وَرَآءَهُمْ

behind them

warāahum

يَوْمًۭا

a Day

yawman

ثَقِيلًۭا

grave

thaqīlan

٢٧

Indeed, these [disbelievers] love the immediate and leave behind them1 a grave Day.

— Saheeh International

نَّحْنُ

We

naḥnu

خَلَقْنَـٰهُمْ

created them

khalaqnāhum

وَشَدَدْنَآ

and We strengthened

washadadnā

أَسْرَهُمْ ۖ

their forms

asrahum

وَإِذَا

and when

wa-idhā

شِئْنَا

We will

shi'nā

بَدَّلْنَآ

We can change

baddalnā

أَمْثَـٰلَهُمْ

their likeness[es]

amthālahum

تَبْدِيلًا

(with) a change

tabdīlan

٢٨

We have created them and strengthened their forms, and when We will, We can change their likenesses with [complete] alteration.

— Saheeh International

إِنَّ

Indeed

inna

هَـٰذِهِۦ

this

hādhihi

تَذْكِرَةٌۭ ۖ

(is) a reminder

tadhkiratun

فَمَن

so whoever

faman

شَآءَ

wills

shāa

ٱتَّخَذَ

let him take

ittakhadha

إِلَىٰ

to

ilā

رَبِّهِۦ

his Lord

rabbihi

سَبِيلًۭا

a way

sabīlan

٢٩

Indeed, this is a reminder, so he who wills may take to his Lord a way.

— Saheeh International

وَمَا

And not

wamā

تَشَآءُونَ

you will

tashāūna

إِلَّآ

except

illā

أَن

that

an

يَشَآءَ

wills

yashāa

ٱللَّهُ ۚ

Allah

l-lahu

إِنَّ

Indeed

inna

ٱللَّهَ

Allah

l-laha

كَانَ

is

kāna

عَلِيمًا

All-Knower

ʿalīman

حَكِيمًۭا

All-Wise

ḥakīman

٣٠

And you do not will except that Allāh wills. Indeed, Allāh is ever Knowing and Wise.

— Saheeh International

يُدْخِلُ

He admits

yud'khilu

مَن

whom

man

يَشَآءُ

He wills

yashāu

فِى

into

رَحْمَتِهِۦ ۚ

His mercy

raḥmatihi

وَٱلظَّـٰلِمِينَ

but (for) the wrongdoers

wal-ẓālimīna

أَعَدَّ

He has prepared

aʿadda

لَهُمْ

for them

lahum

عَذَابًا

a punishment

ʿadhāban

أَلِيمًۢا

painful

alīman

٣١

He admits whom He wills into His mercy; but the wrongdoers - He has prepared for them a painful punishment.

— Saheeh International
