Az-Zumar

The Troops

الزمر

تَنزِيلُ

(The) revelation

tanzīlu

ٱلْكِتَـٰبِ

(of) the Book

l-kitābi

مِنَ

(is) from

mina

ٱللَّهِ

Allah

l-lahi

ٱلْعَزِيزِ

the All-Mighty

l-ʿazīzi

ٱلْحَكِيمِ

the All-Wise

l-ḥakīmi

١

The revelation of the Book [i.e., the Qur’ān] is from Allāh, the Exalted in Might, the Wise.

— Saheeh International

إِنَّآ

Indeed, We

innā

أَنزَلْنَآ

[We] have revealed

anzalnā

إِلَيْكَ

to you

ilayka

ٱلْكِتَـٰبَ

the Book

l-kitāba

بِٱلْحَقِّ

in truth

bil-ḥaqi

فَٱعْبُدِ

so worship

fa-uʿ'budi

ٱللَّهَ

Allah

l-laha

مُخْلِصًۭا

(being) sincere

mukh'liṣan

لَّهُ

to Him

lahu

ٱلدِّينَ

(in) the religion

l-dīna

٢

Indeed, We have sent down to you the Book, [O Muḥammad], in truth. So worship Allāh, [being] sincere to Him in religion.

— Saheeh International

أَلَا

Unquestionably

alā

لِلَّهِ

for Allah

lillahi

ٱلدِّينُ

(is) the religion

l-dīnu

ٱلْخَالِصُ ۚ

the pure

l-khāliṣu

وَٱلَّذِينَ

And those who

wa-alladhīna

ٱتَّخَذُوا۟

take

ittakhadhū

مِن

besides Him

min

دُونِهِۦٓ

besides Him

dūnihi

أَوْلِيَآءَ

protectors

awliyāa

مَا

Not

نَعْبُدُهُمْ

we worship them

naʿbuduhum

إِلَّا

except

illā

لِيُقَرِّبُونَآ

that they may bring us near

liyuqarribūnā

إِلَى

to

ilā

ٱللَّهِ

Allah

l-lahi

زُلْفَىٰٓ

(in) nearness

zul'fā

إِنَّ

Indeed

inna

ٱللَّهَ

Allah

l-laha

يَحْكُمُ

will judge

yaḥkumu

بَيْنَهُمْ

between them

baynahum

فِى

in

مَا

what

هُمْ

they

hum

فِيهِ

[in it]

fīhi

يَخْتَلِفُونَ ۗ

differ

yakhtalifūna

إِنَّ

Indeed

inna

ٱللَّهَ

Allah

l-laha

لَا

(does) not

يَهْدِى

guide

yahdī

مَنْ

(one) who

man

هُوَ

[he]

huwa

كَـٰذِبٌۭ

(is) a liar

kādhibun

كَفَّارٌۭ

and a disbeliever

kaffārun

٣

Unquestionably, for Allāh is the pure religion.1 And those who take protectors besides Him [say], "We only worship them that they may bring us nearer to Allāh in position." Indeed, Allāh will judge between them concerning that over which they differ. Indeed, Allāh does not guide he who is a liar and [confirmed] disbeliever.

— Saheeh International

لَّوْ

If

law

أَرَادَ

Allah (had) intended

arāda

ٱللَّهُ

Allah (had) intended

l-lahu

أَن

to

an

يَتَّخِذَ

take

yattakhidha

وَلَدًۭا

a son

waladan

لَّٱصْطَفَىٰ

surely, He (could) have chosen

la-iṣ'ṭafā

مِمَّا

from what

mimmā

يَخْلُقُ

He creates

yakhluqu

مَا

whatever

يَشَآءُ ۚ

He willed

yashāu

سُبْحَـٰنَهُۥ ۖ

Glory be to Him

sub'ḥānahu

هُوَ

He

huwa

ٱللَّهُ

(is) Allah

l-lahu

ٱلْوَٰحِدُ

the One

l-wāḥidu

ٱلْقَهَّارُ

the Irresistible

l-qahāru

٤

If Allāh had intended to take a son, He could have chosen from what He creates whatever He willed. Exalted is He; He is Allāh, the One, the Prevailing.1

— Saheeh International

خَلَقَ

He created

khalaqa

ٱلسَّمَـٰوَٰتِ

the heavens

l-samāwāti

وَٱلْأَرْضَ

and the earth

wal-arḍa

بِٱلْحَقِّ ۖ

in [the] truth

bil-ḥaqi

يُكَوِّرُ

He wraps

yukawwiru

ٱلَّيْلَ

the night

al-layla

عَلَى

over

ʿalā

ٱلنَّهَارِ

the day

l-nahāri

وَيُكَوِّرُ

and wraps

wayukawwiru

ٱلنَّهَارَ

the day

l-nahāra

عَلَى

over

ʿalā

ٱلَّيْلِ ۖ

the night

al-layli

وَسَخَّرَ

And He subjected

wasakhara

ٱلشَّمْسَ

the sun

l-shamsa

وَٱلْقَمَرَ ۖ

and the moon

wal-qamara

كُلٌّۭ

each

kullun

يَجْرِى

running

yajrī

لِأَجَلٍۢ

for a term

li-ajalin

مُّسَمًّى ۗ

specified

musamman

أَلَا

Unquestionably

alā

هُوَ

He

huwa

ٱلْعَزِيزُ

(is) the All-Mighty

l-ʿazīzu

ٱلْغَفَّـٰرُ

the Oft-Forgiving

l-ghafāru

٥

He created the heavens and earth in truth. He wraps the night over the day and wraps the day over the night and has subjected the sun and the moon, each running [its course] for a specified term. Unquestionably, He is the Exalted in Might, the Perpetual Forgiver.1

— Saheeh International

خَلَقَكُم

He created you

khalaqakum

مِّن

from

min

نَّفْسٍۢ

a soul

nafsin

وَٰحِدَةٍۢ

single

wāḥidatin

ثُمَّ

Then

thumma

جَعَلَ

He made

jaʿala

مِنْهَا

from it

min'hā

زَوْجَهَا

its mate

zawjahā

وَأَنزَلَ

And He sent down

wa-anzala

لَكُم

for you

lakum

مِّنَ

of

mina

ٱلْأَنْعَـٰمِ

the cattle

l-anʿāmi

ثَمَـٰنِيَةَ

eight

thamāniyata

أَزْوَٰجٍۢ ۚ

kinds

azwājin

يَخْلُقُكُمْ

He creates you

yakhluqukum

فِى

in

بُطُونِ

(the) wombs

buṭūni

أُمَّهَـٰتِكُمْ

(of) your mothers

ummahātikum

خَلْقًۭا

creation

khalqan

مِّنۢ

after

min

بَعْدِ

after

baʿdi

خَلْقٍۢ

creation

khalqin

فِى

in

ظُلُمَـٰتٍۢ

darkness[es]

ẓulumātin

ثَلَـٰثٍۢ ۚ

three

thalāthin

ذَٰلِكُمُ

That

dhālikumu

ٱللَّهُ

(is) Allah

l-lahu

رَبُّكُمْ

your Lord

rabbukum

لَهُ

for Him

lahu

ٱلْمُلْكُ ۖ

(is) the dominion

l-mul'ku

لَآ

(There is) no

إِلَـٰهَ

god

ilāha

إِلَّا

except

illā

هُوَ ۖ

He

huwa

فَأَنَّىٰ

Then how

fa-annā

تُصْرَفُونَ

are you turning away

tuṣ'rafūna

٦

He created you from one soul. Then He made from it its mate, and He produced for you from the grazing livestock eight mates.1 He creates you in the wombs of your mothers, creation after creation, within three darknesses.2 That is Allāh, your Lord; to Him belongs dominion. There is no deity except Him, so how are you averted?

— Saheeh International

إِن

If

in

تَكْفُرُوا۟

you disbelieve

takfurū

فَإِنَّ

then indeed

fa-inna

ٱللَّهَ

Allah

l-laha

غَنِىٌّ

(is) free from need

ghaniyyun

عَنكُمْ ۖ

of you

ʿankum

وَلَا

And not

walā

يَرْضَىٰ

He likes

yarḍā

لِعِبَادِهِ

in His slaves

liʿibādihi

ٱلْكُفْرَ ۖ

ungratefulness

l-kuf'ra

وَإِن

And if

wa-in

تَشْكُرُوا۟

you are grateful

tashkurū

يَرْضَهُ

He likes it

yarḍahu

لَكُمْ ۗ

in you

lakum

وَلَا

And not

walā

تَزِرُ

will bear

taziru

وَازِرَةٌۭ

bearer of burdens

wāziratun

وِزْرَ

(the) burden

wiz'ra

أُخْرَىٰ ۗ

(of) another

ukh'rā

ثُمَّ

Then

thumma

إِلَىٰ

to

ilā

رَبِّكُم

your Lord

rabbikum

مَّرْجِعُكُمْ

(is) your return

marjiʿukum

فَيُنَبِّئُكُم

then He will inform you

fayunabbi-ukum

بِمَا

about what

bimā

كُنتُمْ

you used to

kuntum

تَعْمَلُونَ ۚ

do

taʿmalūna

إِنَّهُۥ

Indeed, He

innahu

عَلِيمٌۢ

(is) the All-Knower

ʿalīmun

بِذَاتِ

of what (is) in the breasts

bidhāti

ٱلصُّدُورِ

of what (is) in the breasts

l-ṣudūri

٧

If you disbelieve - indeed, Allāh is Free from need of you. And He does not approve for His servants disbelief. And if you are grateful, He approves [i.e., likes] it for you; and no bearer of burdens will bear the burden of another. Then to your Lord is your return, and He will inform you about what you used to do. Indeed, He is Knowing of that within the breasts.

— Saheeh International

۞ وَإِذَا

And when

wa-idhā

مَسَّ

touches

massa

ٱلْإِنسَـٰنَ

[the] man

l-insāna

ضُرٌّۭ

adversity

ḍurrun

دَعَا

he calls

daʿā

رَبَّهُۥ

his Lord

rabbahu

مُنِيبًا

turning

munīban

إِلَيْهِ

to Him

ilayhi

ثُمَّ

then

thumma

إِذَا

when

idhā

خَوَّلَهُۥ

He bestows on him

khawwalahu

نِعْمَةًۭ

a favor

niʿ'matan

مِّنْهُ

from Himself

min'hu

نَسِىَ

he forgets

nasiya

مَا

(for) what

كَانَ

he used to call

kāna

يَدْعُوٓا۟

he used to call

yadʿū

إِلَيْهِ

[to] Him

ilayhi

مِن

before

min

قَبْلُ

before

qablu

وَجَعَلَ

and he sets up

wajaʿala

لِلَّهِ

to Allah

lillahi

أَندَادًۭا

rivals

andādan

لِّيُضِلَّ

to mislead

liyuḍilla

عَن

from

ʿan

سَبِيلِهِۦ ۚ

His Path

sabīlihi

قُلْ

Say

qul

تَمَتَّعْ

Enjoy

tamattaʿ

بِكُفْرِكَ

in your disbelief

bikuf'rika

قَلِيلًا ۖ

(for) a little

qalīlan

إِنَّكَ

Indeed, you

innaka

مِنْ

(are) of

min

أَصْحَـٰبِ

(the) companions

aṣḥābi

ٱلنَّارِ

(of) the Fire

l-nāri

٨

And when adversity touches man, he calls upon his Lord, turning to Him [alone]; then when He bestows on him a favor from Himself, he forgets Him whom he called upon before,1 and he attributes to Allāh equals to mislead [people] from His way. Say, "Enjoy your disbelief for a little; indeed, you are of the companions of the Fire."

— Saheeh International

أَمَّنْ

Is (one) who

amman

هُوَ

[he]

huwa

قَـٰنِتٌ

(is) devoutly obedient

qānitun

ءَانَآءَ

(during) hours

ānāa

ٱلَّيْلِ

(of) the night

al-layli

سَاجِدًۭا

prostrating

sājidan

وَقَآئِمًۭا

and standing

waqāiman

يَحْذَرُ

fearing

yaḥdharu

ٱلْـَٔاخِرَةَ

the Hereafter

l-ākhirata

وَيَرْجُوا۟

and hoping

wayarjū

رَحْمَةَ

(for the) Mercy

raḥmata

رَبِّهِۦ ۗ

(of) his Lord

rabbihi

قُلْ

Say

qul

هَلْ

Are

hal

يَسْتَوِى

equal

yastawī

ٱلَّذِينَ

those who

alladhīna

يَعْلَمُونَ

know

yaʿlamūna

وَٱلَّذِينَ

and those who

wa-alladhīna

لَا

(do) not

يَعْلَمُونَ ۗ

know

yaʿlamūna

إِنَّمَا

Only

innamā

يَتَذَكَّرُ

will take heed

yatadhakkaru

أُو۟لُوا۟

those of understanding

ulū

ٱلْأَلْبَـٰبِ

those of understanding

l-albābi

٩

Is one who is devoutly obedient during periods of the night, prostrating and standing [in prayer], fearing the Hereafter and hoping for the mercy of his Lord, [like one who does not]? Say, "Are those who know equal to those who do not know?" Only they will remember [who are] people of understanding.

— Saheeh International

قُلْ

Say

qul

يَـٰعِبَادِ

O My slaves

yāʿibādi

ٱلَّذِينَ

[those] who

alladhīna

ءَامَنُوا۟

believe

āmanū

ٱتَّقُوا۟

Fear

ittaqū

رَبَّكُمْ ۚ

your Lord

rabbakum

لِلَّذِينَ

For those who

lilladhīna

أَحْسَنُوا۟

do good

aḥsanū

فِى

in

هَـٰذِهِ

this

hādhihi

ٱلدُّنْيَا

world

l-dun'yā

حَسَنَةٌۭ ۗ

(is) good

ḥasanatun

وَأَرْضُ

and the earth

wa-arḍu

ٱللَّهِ

(of) Allah

l-lahi

وَٰسِعَةٌ ۗ

(is) spacious

wāsiʿatun

إِنَّمَا

Only

innamā

يُوَفَّى

will be paid back in full

yuwaffā

ٱلصَّـٰبِرُونَ

the patient ones

l-ṣābirūna

أَجْرَهُم

their reward

ajrahum

بِغَيْرِ

without

bighayri

حِسَابٍۢ

account

ḥisābin

١٠

Say,1 "O My servants who have believed, fear your Lord. For those who do good in this world is good, and the earth of Allāh is spacious. Indeed, the patient will be given their reward without account [i.e., limit]."

— Saheeh International

قُلْ

Say

qul

إِنِّىٓ

Indeed, I

innī

أُمِرْتُ

[I] am commanded

umir'tu

أَنْ

that

an

أَعْبُدَ

I worship

aʿbuda

ٱللَّهَ

Allah

l-laha

مُخْلِصًۭا

(being) sincere

mukh'liṣan

لَّهُ

to Him

lahu

ٱلدِّينَ

(in) the religion

l-dīna

١١

Say, [O Muḥammad], "Indeed, I have been commanded to worship Allāh, [being] sincere to Him in religion.

— Saheeh International

وَأُمِرْتُ

And I am commanded

wa-umir'tu

لِأَنْ

that

li-an

أَكُونَ

I be

akūna

أَوَّلَ

(the) first

awwala

ٱلْمُسْلِمِينَ

(of) those who submit

l-mus'limīna

١٢

And I have been commanded to be the first [among you] of the Muslims."

— Saheeh International

قُلْ

Say

qul

إِنِّىٓ

Indeed, I

innī

أَخَافُ

[I] fear

akhāfu

إِنْ

if

in

عَصَيْتُ

I disobey

ʿaṣaytu

رَبِّى

my Lord

rabbī

عَذَابَ

(the) punishment

ʿadhāba

يَوْمٍ

(of) a Day

yawmin

عَظِيمٍۢ

great

ʿaẓīmin

١٣

Say, "Indeed I fear, if I should disobey my Lord, the punishment of a tremendous Day."

— Saheeh International

قُلِ

Say

quli

ٱللَّهَ

I worship Allah

l-laha

أَعْبُدُ

I worship Allah

aʿbudu

مُخْلِصًۭا

(being) sincere

mukh'liṣan

لَّهُۥ

to Him

lahu

دِينِى

(in) my religion

dīnī

١٤

Say, "Allāh [alone] do I worship, sincere to Him in my religion,

— Saheeh International

فَٱعْبُدُوا۟

So worship

fa-uʿ'budū

مَا

what

شِئْتُم

you will

shi'tum

مِّن

besides Him

min

دُونِهِۦ ۗ

besides Him

dūnihi

قُلْ

Say

qul

إِنَّ

Indeed

inna

ٱلْخَـٰسِرِينَ

the losers

l-khāsirīna

ٱلَّذِينَ

(are) those who

alladhīna

خَسِرُوٓا۟

(will) lose

khasirū

أَنفُسَهُمْ

themselves

anfusahum

وَأَهْلِيهِمْ

and their families

wa-ahlīhim

يَوْمَ

(on the) Day

yawma

ٱلْقِيَـٰمَةِ ۗ

(of) the Resurrection

l-qiyāmati

أَلَا

Unquestionably

alā

ذَٰلِكَ

that

dhālika

هُوَ

it

huwa

ٱلْخُسْرَانُ

(is) the loss

l-khus'rānu

ٱلْمُبِينُ

the clear

l-mubīnu

١٥

So worship what you will besides Him." Say, "Indeed, the losers are the ones who will lose themselves and their families on the Day of Resurrection. Unquestionably, that is the manifest loss."

— Saheeh International

لَهُم

For them

lahum

مِّن

from

فَوْقِهِمْ

above them

fawqihim

ظُلَلٌۭ

coverings

ẓulalun

مِّنَ

of

mina

ٱلنَّارِ

the Fire

l-nāri

وَمِن

and from

wamin

تَحْتِهِمْ

below them

taḥtihim

ظُلَلٌۭ ۚ

coverings

ẓulalun

ذَٰلِكَ

(With) that

dhālika

يُخَوِّفُ

threatens

yukhawwifu

ٱللَّهُ

Allah

l-lahu

بِهِۦ

[with it]

bihi

عِبَادَهُۥ ۚ

His slaves

ʿibādahu

يَـٰعِبَادِ

O My slaves

yāʿibādi

فَٱتَّقُونِ

So fear Me

fa-ittaqūni

١٦

They will have canopies [i.e., layers] of fire above them and below them, canopies. By that Allāh threatens [i.e., warns] His servants. O My servants, then fear Me.

— Saheeh International

وَٱلَّذِينَ

And those who

wa-alladhīna

ٱجْتَنَبُوا۟

avoid

ij'tanabū

ٱلطَّـٰغُوتَ

the false gods

l-ṭāghūta

أَن

lest

an

يَعْبُدُوهَا

they worship them

yaʿbudūhā

وَأَنَابُوٓا۟

and turn

wa-anābū

إِلَى

to

ilā

ٱللَّهِ

Allah

l-lahi

لَهُمُ

for them

lahumu

ٱلْبُشْرَىٰ ۚ

(are) glad tidings

l-bush'rā

فَبَشِّرْ

So give glad tidings

fabashir

عِبَادِ

(to) My slaves

ʿibādi

١٧

But those who have avoided ṭāghūt,1 lest they worship it, and turned back to Allāh - for them are good tidings. So give good tidings to My servants

— Saheeh International

ٱلَّذِينَ

Those who

alladhīna

يَسْتَمِعُونَ

they listen (to)

yastamiʿūna

ٱلْقَوْلَ

the Word

l-qawla

فَيَتَّبِعُونَ

then follow

fayattabiʿūna

أَحْسَنَهُۥٓ ۚ

the best thereof

aḥsanahu

أُو۟لَـٰٓئِكَ

those

ulāika

ٱلَّذِينَ

(are) they whom

alladhīna

هَدَىٰهُمُ

Allah has guided them

hadāhumu

ٱللَّهُ ۖ

Allah has guided them

l-lahu

وَأُو۟لَـٰٓئِكَ

and those

wa-ulāika

هُمْ

are [they]

hum

أُو۟لُوا۟

the men of understanding

ulū

ٱلْأَلْبَـٰبِ

the men of understanding

l-albābi

١٨

Who listen to speech and follow the best of it. Those are the ones Allāh has guided, and those are people of understanding.

— Saheeh International

أَفَمَنْ

Then, is (one) who

afaman

حَقَّ

became due

ḥaqqa

عَلَيْهِ

on him

ʿalayhi

كَلِمَةُ

the word

kalimatu

ٱلْعَذَابِ

(of) the punishment

l-ʿadhābi

أَفَأَنتَ

Then can you

afa-anta

تُنقِذُ

save

tunqidhu

مَن

(one) who

man

فِى

(is) in

ٱلنَّارِ

the Fire

l-nāri

١٩

Then, is one who has deserved the decree of punishment [to be guided]? Then, can you save one who is in the Fire?

— Saheeh International

لَـٰكِنِ

But

lākini

ٱلَّذِينَ

those who

alladhīna

ٱتَّقَوْا۟

fear

ittaqaw

رَبَّهُمْ

their Lord

rabbahum

لَهُمْ

for them

lahum

غُرَفٌۭ

(are) lofty mansions

ghurafun

مِّن

above them

min

فَوْقِهَا

above them

fawqihā

غُرَفٌۭ

lofty mansions

ghurafun

مَّبْنِيَّةٌۭ

built high

mabniyyatun

تَجْرِى

flow

tajrī

مِن

from

min

تَحْتِهَا

beneath it

taḥtihā

ٱلْأَنْهَـٰرُ ۖ

the rivers

l-anhāru

وَعْدَ

(The) Promise

waʿda

ٱللَّهِ ۖ

(of) Allah

l-lahi

لَا

Not

يُخْلِفُ

Allah fails

yukh'lifu

ٱللَّهُ

Allah fails

l-lahu

ٱلْمِيعَادَ

(in His) promise

l-mīʿāda

٢٠

But those who have feared their Lord - for them are chambers,1 above them chambers built high, beneath which rivers flow. [This is] the promise of Allāh. Allāh does not fail in [His] promise.

— Saheeh International

أَلَمْ

Do not

alam

تَرَ

you see

tara

أَنَّ

that

anna

ٱللَّهَ

Allah

l-laha

أَنزَلَ

sends down

anzala

مِنَ

from

mina

ٱلسَّمَآءِ

the sky

l-samāi

مَآءًۭ

water

māan

فَسَلَكَهُۥ

and He makes it flow

fasalakahu

يَنَـٰبِيعَ

(as) springs

yanābīʿa

فِى

in

ٱلْأَرْضِ

the earth

l-arḍi

ثُمَّ

then

thumma

يُخْرِجُ

He produces

yukh'riju

بِهِۦ

with it

bihi

زَرْعًۭا

crops

zarʿan

مُّخْتَلِفًا

(of) different

mukh'talifan

أَلْوَٰنُهُۥ

colors

alwānuhu

ثُمَّ

then

thumma

يَهِيجُ

they wither

yahīju

فَتَرَىٰهُ

and you see it

fatarāhu

مُصْفَرًّۭا

turn yellow

muṣ'farran

ثُمَّ

then

thumma

يَجْعَلُهُۥ

He makes them

yajʿaluhu

حُطَـٰمًا ۚ

debris

ḥuṭāman

إِنَّ

Indeed

inna

فِى

in

ذَٰلِكَ

that

dhālika

لَذِكْرَىٰ

surely, (is) a reminder

ladhik'rā

لِأُو۟لِى

for those of understanding

li-ulī

ٱلْأَلْبَـٰبِ

for those of understanding

l-albābi

٢١

Do you not see that Allāh sends down rain from the sky and makes it flow as springs [and rivers] in the earth; then He produces thereby crops of varying colors; then they dry and you see them turned yellow; then He makes them [scattered] debris. Indeed in that is a reminder for those of understanding.

— Saheeh International

أَفَمَن

So is (one for) whom

afaman

شَرَحَ

Allah has expanded

sharaḥa

ٱللَّهُ

Allah has expanded

l-lahu

صَدْرَهُۥ

his breast

ṣadrahu

لِلْإِسْلَـٰمِ

for Islam

lil'is'lāmi

فَهُوَ

so he

fahuwa

عَلَىٰ

(is) upon

ʿalā

نُورٍۢ

a light

nūrin

مِّن

from

min

رَّبِّهِۦ ۚ

his Lord

rabbihi

فَوَيْلٌۭ

So woe

fawaylun

لِّلْقَـٰسِيَةِ

to (those are) hardened

lil'qāsiyati

قُلُوبُهُم

their hearts

qulūbuhum

مِّن

from

min

ذِكْرِ

(the) remembrance of Allah

dhik'ri

ٱللَّهِ ۚ

(the) remembrance of Allah

l-lahi

أُو۟لَـٰٓئِكَ

Those

ulāika

فِى

(are) in

ضَلَـٰلٍۢ

error

ḍalālin

مُّبِينٍ

clear

mubīnin

٢٢

So is one whose breast Allāh has expanded to [accept] Islām and he is upon [i.e., guided by] a light from his Lord [like one whose heart rejects it]? Then woe to those whose hearts are hardened against the remembrance of Allāh. Those are in manifest error.

— Saheeh International

ٱللَّهُ

Allah

al-lahu

نَزَّلَ

has revealed

nazzala

أَحْسَنَ

(the) best

aḥsana

ٱلْحَدِيثِ

(of) [the] statement

l-ḥadīthi

كِتَـٰبًۭا

a Book

kitāban

مُّتَشَـٰبِهًۭا

(its parts) resembling each other

mutashābihan

مَّثَانِىَ

oft-repeated

mathāniya

تَقْشَعِرُّ

Shiver

taqshaʿirru

مِنْهُ

from it

min'hu

جُلُودُ

(the) skins

julūdu

ٱلَّذِينَ

(of) those who

alladhīna

يَخْشَوْنَ

fear

yakhshawna

رَبَّهُمْ

their Lord

rabbahum

ثُمَّ

then

thumma

تَلِينُ

relax

talīnu

جُلُودُهُمْ

their skins

julūduhum

وَقُلُوبُهُمْ

and their hearts

waqulūbuhum

إِلَىٰ

at

ilā

ذِكْرِ

(the) remembrance

dhik'ri

ٱللَّهِ ۚ

(of) Allah

l-lahi

ذَٰلِكَ

That

dhālika

هُدَى

(is the) guidance

hudā

ٱللَّهِ

(of) Allah

l-lahi

يَهْدِى

He guides

yahdī

بِهِۦ

with it

bihi

مَن

whom

man

يَشَآءُ ۚ

He wills

yashāu

وَمَن

And whoever

waman

يُضْلِلِ

Allah lets go astray

yuḍ'lili

ٱللَّهُ

Allah lets go astray

l-lahu

فَمَا

then not

famā

لَهُۥ

for him

lahu

مِنْ

any

min

هَادٍ

guide

hādin

٢٣

Allāh has sent down the best statement: a consistent Book wherein is reiteration. The skins shiver therefrom of those who fear their Lord; then their skins and their hearts relax at the remembrance [i.e., mention] of Allāh. That is the guidance of Allāh by which He guides whom He wills. And one whom Allāh sends astray - for him there is no guide.

— Saheeh International

أَفَمَن

Then (is) he who

afaman

يَتَّقِى

will shield

yattaqī

بِوَجْهِهِۦ

with his face

biwajhihi

سُوٓءَ

(the) worst

sūa

ٱلْعَذَابِ

punishment

l-ʿadhābi

يَوْمَ

(on the) Day

yawma

ٱلْقِيَـٰمَةِ ۚ

(of) the Resurrection

l-qiyāmati

وَقِيلَ

And it will be said

waqīla

لِلظَّـٰلِمِينَ

to the wrongdoers

lilẓẓālimīna

ذُوقُوا۟

Taste

dhūqū

مَا

what

كُنتُمْ

you used to

kuntum

تَكْسِبُونَ

earn

taksibūna

٢٤

Then is he who will shield with his face1 the worst of the punishment on the Day of Resurrection [like one secure from it]? And it will be said to the wrongdoers, "Taste what you used to earn."

— Saheeh International

كَذَّبَ

Denied

kadhaba

ٱلَّذِينَ

those who

alladhīna

مِن

(were) before them

min

قَبْلِهِمْ

(were) before them

qablihim

فَأَتَىٰهُمُ

so came upon them

fa-atāhumu

ٱلْعَذَابُ

the punishment

l-ʿadhābu

مِنْ

from

min

حَيْثُ

where

ḥaythu

لَا

not

يَشْعُرُونَ

they perceive

yashʿurūna

٢٥

Those before them denied, and punishment came upon them from where they did not perceive.

— Saheeh International

فَأَذَاقَهُمُ

So Allah made them

fa-adhāqahumu

ٱللَّهُ

So Allah made them

l-lahu

ٱلْخِزْىَ

the disgrace

l-khiz'ya

فِى

in

ٱلْحَيَوٰةِ

the life

l-ḥayati

ٱلدُّنْيَا ۖ

(of) the world

l-dun'yā

وَلَعَذَابُ

and certainly (the) punishment

walaʿadhābu

ٱلْـَٔاخِرَةِ

(of) the Hereafter

l-ākhirati

أَكْبَرُ ۚ

(is) greater

akbaru

لَوْ

if

law

كَانُوا۟

they

kānū

يَعْلَمُونَ

knew

yaʿlamūna

٢٦

So Allāh made them taste disgrace in worldly life. But the punishment of the Hereafter is greater, if they only knew.

— Saheeh International

وَلَقَدْ

And indeed

walaqad

ضَرَبْنَا

We have set forth

ḍarabnā

لِلنَّاسِ

for people

lilnnāsi

فِى

in

هَـٰذَا

this

hādhā

ٱلْقُرْءَانِ

Quran

l-qur'āni

مِن

of

min

كُلِّ

every

kulli

مَثَلٍۢ

example

mathalin

لَّعَلَّهُمْ

so that they may

laʿallahum

يَتَذَكَّرُونَ

take heed

yatadhakkarūna

٢٧

And We have certainly presented for the people in this Qur’ān from every [kind of] example - that they might remember.

— Saheeh International

قُرْءَانًا

A Quran

qur'ānan

عَرَبِيًّا

(in) Arabic

ʿarabiyyan

غَيْرَ

without

ghayra

ذِى

any

dhī

عِوَجٍۢ

crookedness

ʿiwajin

لَّعَلَّهُمْ

so that they may

laʿallahum

يَتَّقُونَ

(become) righteous

yattaqūna

٢٨

[It is] an Arabic Qur’ān, without any deviance1 that they might become righteous.2

— Saheeh International

ضَرَبَ

Allah sets forth

ḍaraba

ٱللَّهُ

Allah sets forth

l-lahu

مَثَلًۭا

an example

mathalan

رَّجُلًۭا

a man

rajulan

فِيهِ

about him

fīhi

شُرَكَآءُ

partners

shurakāu

مُتَشَـٰكِسُونَ

quarreling

mutashākisūna

وَرَجُلًۭا

and a man

warajulan

سَلَمًۭا

(belonging) exclusively

salaman

لِّرَجُلٍ

to one man

lirajulin

هَلْ

are

hal

يَسْتَوِيَانِ

they both equal

yastawiyāni

مَثَلًا ۚ

(in) comparison

mathalan

ٱلْحَمْدُ

All praise

l-ḥamdu

لِلَّهِ ۚ

(be) to Allah

lillahi

بَلْ

Nay

bal

أَكْثَرُهُمْ

most of them

aktharuhum

لَا

(do) not

يَعْلَمُونَ

know

yaʿlamūna

٢٩

Allāh presents an example: a man [i.e., slave] owned by quarreling partners and another belonging exclusively to one man - are they equal in comparison? Praise be to Allāh! But most of them do not know.

— Saheeh International

إِنَّكَ

Indeed, you

innaka

مَيِّتٌۭ

will die

mayyitun

وَإِنَّهُم

and indeed, they

wa-innahum

مَّيِّتُونَ

(will also) die

mayyitūna

٣٠

Indeed, you are to die, and indeed, they are to die.

— Saheeh International

ثُمَّ

Then

thumma

إِنَّكُمْ

indeed you

innakum

يَوْمَ

(on the) Day

yawma

ٱلْقِيَـٰمَةِ

(of) the Resurrection

l-qiyāmati

عِندَ

before

ʿinda

رَبِّكُمْ

your Lord

rabbikum

تَخْتَصِمُونَ

will dispute

takhtaṣimūna

٣١

Then indeed you, on the Day of Resurrection, before your Lord, will dispute.

— Saheeh International

۞ فَمَنْ

Then who

faman

أَظْلَمُ

(is) more unjust

aẓlamu

مِمَّن

than (one) who

mimman

كَذَبَ

lies

kadhaba

عَلَى

against

ʿalā

ٱللَّهِ

Allah

l-lahi

وَكَذَّبَ

and denies

wakadhaba

بِٱلصِّدْقِ

the truth

bil-ṣid'qi

إِذْ

when

idh

جَآءَهُۥٓ ۚ

it comes to him

jāahu

أَلَيْسَ

Is (there) not

alaysa

فِى

in

جَهَنَّمَ

Hell

jahannama

مَثْوًۭى

an abode

mathwan

لِّلْكَـٰفِرِينَ

for the disbelievers

lil'kāfirīna

٣٢

So who is more unjust than one who lies about Allāh and denies the truth when it has come to him? Is there not in Hell a residence for the disbelievers?

— Saheeh International

وَٱلَّذِى

And the one who

wa-alladhī

جَآءَ

brought

jāa

بِٱلصِّدْقِ

the truth

bil-ṣid'qi

وَصَدَّقَ

and believed

waṣaddaqa

بِهِۦٓ ۙ

in it

bihi

أُو۟لَـٰٓئِكَ

those

ulāika

هُمُ

[they]

humu

ٱلْمُتَّقُونَ

(are) the righteous

l-mutaqūna

٣٣

And the one who has brought the truth [i.e., the Prophet (ﷺ)] and [they who] believed in it - those are the righteous.

— Saheeh International

لَهُم

For them

lahum

مَّا

(is) what

يَشَآءُونَ

they wish

yashāūna

عِندَ

with

ʿinda

رَبِّهِمْ ۚ

their Lord

rabbihim

ذَٰلِكَ

That

dhālika

جَزَآءُ

(is the) reward

jazāu

ٱلْمُحْسِنِينَ

(of) the good-doers

l-muḥ'sinīna

٣٤

They will have whatever they desire with their Lord. That is the reward of the doers of good -

— Saheeh International

لِيُكَفِّرَ

That Allah will remove

liyukaffira

ٱللَّهُ

That Allah will remove

l-lahu

عَنْهُمْ

from them

ʿanhum

أَسْوَأَ

(the) worst

aswa-a

ٱلَّذِى

(of) what

alladhī

عَمِلُوا۟

they did

ʿamilū

وَيَجْزِيَهُمْ

and reward them

wayajziyahum

أَجْرَهُم

their due

ajrahum

بِأَحْسَنِ

for (the) best

bi-aḥsani

ٱلَّذِى

(of) what

alladhī

كَانُوا۟

they used to

kānū

يَعْمَلُونَ

do

yaʿmalūna

٣٥

That Allāh may remove from them the worst of what they did and reward them their due for the best of what they used to do.

— Saheeh International

أَلَيْسَ

Is not

alaysa

ٱللَّهُ

Allah

l-lahu

بِكَافٍ

sufficient

bikāfin

عَبْدَهُۥ ۖ

(for) His slave

ʿabdahu

وَيُخَوِّفُونَكَ

And they threaten you

wayukhawwifūnaka

بِٱلَّذِينَ

with those

bi-alladhīna

مِن

besides Him

min

دُونِهِۦ ۚ

besides Him

dūnihi

وَمَن

And whoever

waman

يُضْلِلِ

Allah lets go astray

yuḍ'lili

ٱللَّهُ

Allah lets go astray

l-lahu

فَمَا

then not

famā

لَهُۥ

for him

lahu

مِنْ

any

min

هَادٍۢ

guide

hādin

٣٦

Is not Allāh sufficient for His Servant [i.e., Prophet Muḥammad (ﷺ)]? And [yet], they threaten you with those [they worship] other than Him. And whoever Allāh leaves astray - for him there is no guide.

— Saheeh International

وَمَن

And whoever

waman

يَهْدِ

Allah guides

yahdi

ٱللَّهُ

Allah guides

l-lahu

فَمَا

then not

famā

لَهُۥ

for him

lahu

مِن

any

min

مُّضِلٍّ ۗ

misleader

muḍillin

أَلَيْسَ

Is not

alaysa

ٱللَّهُ

Allah

l-lahu

بِعَزِيزٍۢ

All-Mighty

biʿazīzin

ذِى

All-Able of retribution

dhī

ٱنتِقَامٍۢ

All-Able of retribution

intiqāmin

٣٧

And whoever Allāh guides - for him there is no misleader. Is not Allāh Exalted in Might and Owner of Retribution?

— Saheeh International

وَلَئِن

And if

wala-in

سَأَلْتَهُم

you ask them

sa-altahum

مَّنْ

who

man

خَلَقَ

created

khalaqa

ٱلسَّمَـٰوَٰتِ

the heavens

l-samāwāti

وَٱلْأَرْضَ

and the earth

wal-arḍa

لَيَقُولُنَّ

Surely, they will say

layaqūlunna

ٱللَّهُ ۚ

Allah

l-lahu

قُلْ

Say

qul

أَفَرَءَيْتُم

Then do you see

afara-aytum

مَّا

what

تَدْعُونَ

you invoke

tadʿūna

مِن

besides

min

دُونِ

besides

dūni

ٱللَّهِ

Allah

l-lahi

إِنْ

if

in

أَرَادَنِىَ

Allah intended for me

arādaniya

ٱللَّهُ

Allah intended for me

l-lahu

بِضُرٍّ

harm

biḍurrin

هَلْ

are

hal

هُنَّ

they

hunna

كَـٰشِفَـٰتُ

removers

kāshifātu

ضُرِّهِۦٓ

(of) harm (from) Him

ḍurrihi

أَوْ

or

aw

أَرَادَنِى

if He intended for me

arādanī

بِرَحْمَةٍ

mercy

biraḥmatin

هَلْ

are

hal

هُنَّ

they

hunna

مُمْسِكَـٰتُ

withholders

mum'sikātu

رَحْمَتِهِۦ ۚ

(of) His mercy

raḥmatihi

قُلْ

Say

qul

حَسْبِىَ

Sufficient (is) Allah for me

ḥasbiya

ٱللَّهُ ۖ

Sufficient (is) Allah for me

l-lahu

عَلَيْهِ

upon Him

ʿalayhi

يَتَوَكَّلُ

put trust

yatawakkalu

ٱلْمُتَوَكِّلُونَ

those who trust

l-mutawakilūna

٣٨

And if you asked them, "Who created the heavens and the earth?" they would surely say, "Allāh." Say, "Then have you considered1 what you invoke besides Allāh? If Allāh intended me harm, are they removers of His harm; or if He intended me mercy, are they withholders of His mercy?" Say, "Sufficient for me is Allāh; upon Him [alone] rely the [wise] reliers."

— Saheeh International

قُلْ

Say

qul

يَـٰقَوْمِ

O my people

yāqawmi

ٱعْمَلُوا۟

Work

iʿ'malū

عَلَىٰ

(according) to

ʿalā

مَكَانَتِكُمْ

your position

makānatikum

إِنِّى

indeed, I am

innī

عَـٰمِلٌۭ ۖ

working

ʿāmilun

فَسَوْفَ

then soon

fasawfa

تَعْلَمُونَ

you will know

taʿlamūna

٣٩

Say, "O my people, work according to your position, [for] indeed, I am working; and you are going to know

— Saheeh International

مَن

(Upon) whom

man

يَأْتِيهِ

will come

yatīhi

عَذَابٌۭ

a punishment

ʿadhābun

يُخْزِيهِ

disgracing him

yukh'zīhi

وَيَحِلُّ

and descends

wayaḥillu

عَلَيْهِ

on him

ʿalayhi

عَذَابٌۭ

a punishment

ʿadhābun

مُّقِيمٌ

everlasting

muqīmun

٤٠

To whom will come a torment disgracing him and on whom will descend an enduring punishment."

— Saheeh International

إِنَّآ

Indeed We

innā

أَنزَلْنَا

We revealed

anzalnā

عَلَيْكَ

to you

ʿalayka

ٱلْكِتَـٰبَ

the Book

l-kitāba

لِلنَّاسِ

for [the] mankind

lilnnāsi

بِٱلْحَقِّ ۖ

in truth

bil-ḥaqi

فَمَنِ

So whoever

famani

ٱهْتَدَىٰ

accepts guidance

ih'tadā

فَلِنَفْسِهِۦ ۖ

then (it is) for his soul

falinafsihi

وَمَن

and whoever

waman

ضَلَّ

goes astray

ḍalla

فَإِنَّمَا

then only

fa-innamā

يَضِلُّ

he strays

yaḍillu

عَلَيْهَا ۖ

against his (soul)

ʿalayhā

وَمَآ

And not

wamā

أَنتَ

you

anta

عَلَيْهِم

(are) over them

ʿalayhim

بِوَكِيلٍ

a manager

biwakīlin

٤١

Indeed, We sent down to you the Book for the people in truth. So whoever is guided - it is for [the benefit of] his soul; and whoever goes astray only goes astray to its detriment. And you are not a manager [i.e., authority] over them.

— Saheeh International

ٱللَّهُ

Allah

al-lahu

يَتَوَفَّى

takes

yatawaffā

ٱلْأَنفُسَ

the souls

l-anfusa

حِينَ

(at the) time

ḥīna

مَوْتِهَا

(of) their death

mawtihā

وَٱلَّتِى

and the one who

wa-allatī

لَمْ

(does) not

lam

تَمُتْ

die

tamut

فِى

in

مَنَامِهَا ۖ

their sleep

manāmihā

فَيُمْسِكُ

Then He keeps

fayum'siku

ٱلَّتِى

the one whom

allatī

قَضَىٰ

He has decreed

qaḍā

عَلَيْهَا

for them

ʿalayhā

ٱلْمَوْتَ

the death

l-mawta

وَيُرْسِلُ

and sends

wayur'silu

ٱلْأُخْرَىٰٓ

the others

l-ukh'rā

إِلَىٰٓ

for

ilā

أَجَلٍۢ

a term

ajalin

مُّسَمًّى ۚ

specified

musamman

إِنَّ

Indeed

inna

فِى

in

ذَٰلِكَ

that

dhālika

لَـَٔايَـٰتٍۢ

surely (are) signs

laāyātin

لِّقَوْمٍۢ

for a people

liqawmin

يَتَفَكَّرُونَ

who ponder

yatafakkarūna

٤٢

Allāh takes the souls at the time of their death, and those that do not die [He takes] during their sleep. Then He keeps those for which He has decreed death and releases the others for a specified term. Indeed in that are signs for a people who give thought.

— Saheeh International

أَمِ

Or

ami

ٱتَّخَذُوا۟

have they taken

ittakhadhū

مِن

besides

min

دُونِ

besides

dūni

ٱللَّهِ

Allah

l-lahi

شُفَعَآءَ ۚ

intercessors

shufaʿāa

قُلْ

Say

qul

أَوَلَوْ

Even though

awalaw

كَانُوا۟

they were

kānū

لَا

not

يَمْلِكُونَ

possessing

yamlikūna

شَيْـًۭٔا

anything

shayan

وَلَا

and not

walā

يَعْقِلُونَ

they understand

yaʿqilūna

٤٣

Or have they taken other than Allāh as intercessors? Say, "Even though they do not possess [power over] anything, nor do they reason?"

— Saheeh International

قُل

Say

qul

لِّلَّهِ

To Allah (belongs)

lillahi

ٱلشَّفَـٰعَةُ

the intercession

l-shafāʿatu

جَمِيعًۭا ۖ

all

jamīʿan

لَّهُۥ

For Him

lahu

مُلْكُ

(is the) dominion

mul'ku

ٱلسَّمَـٰوَٰتِ

(of) the heavens

l-samāwāti

وَٱلْأَرْضِ ۖ

and the earth

wal-arḍi

ثُمَّ

Then

thumma

إِلَيْهِ

to Him

ilayhi

تُرْجَعُونَ

you will be returned

tur'jaʿūna

٤٤

Say, "To Allāh belongs [the right to allow] intercession entirely. To Him belongs the dominion of the heavens and the earth. Then to Him you will be returned."

— Saheeh International

وَإِذَا

And when

wa-idhā

ذُكِرَ

Allah is mentioned

dhukira

ٱللَّهُ

Allah is mentioned

l-lahu

وَحْدَهُ

Alone

waḥdahu

ٱشْمَأَزَّتْ

shrink with aversion

ish'ma-azzat

قُلُوبُ

(the) hearts

qulūbu

ٱلَّذِينَ

(of) those who

alladhīna

(do) not

يُؤْمِنُونَ

believe

yu'minūna

بِٱلْـَٔاخِرَةِ ۖ

in the Hereafter

bil-ākhirati

وَإِذَا

and when

wa-idhā

ذُكِرَ

are mentioned

dhukira

ٱلَّذِينَ

those

alladhīna

مِن

besides Him

min

دُونِهِۦٓ

besides Him

dūnihi

إِذَا

behold

idhā

هُمْ

They

hum

يَسْتَبْشِرُونَ

rejoice

yastabshirūna

٤٥

And when Allāh is mentioned alone, the hearts of those who do not believe in the Hereafter shrink with aversion, but when those [worshipped] other than Him are mentioned, immediately they rejoice.

— Saheeh International

قُلِ

Say

quli

ٱللَّهُمَّ

O Allah

l-lahuma

فَاطِرَ

Creator

fāṭira

ٱلسَّمَـٰوَٰتِ

(of) the heavens

l-samāwāti

وَٱلْأَرْضِ

and the earth

wal-arḍi

عَـٰلِمَ

Knower

ʿālima

ٱلْغَيْبِ

(of) the unseen

l-ghaybi

وَٱلشَّهَـٰدَةِ

and the witnessed

wal-shahādati

أَنتَ

You

anta

تَحْكُمُ

will judge

taḥkumu

بَيْنَ

between

bayna

عِبَادِكَ

Your slaves

ʿibādika

فِى

in

مَا

what

كَانُوا۟

they used to

kānū

فِيهِ

therein

fīhi

يَخْتَلِفُونَ

differ

yakhtalifūna

٤٦

Say, "O Allāh, Creator of the heavens and the earth, Knower of the unseen and the witnessed, You will judge between your servants concerning that over which they used to differ."

— Saheeh International

وَلَوْ

And if

walaw

أَنَّ

And if

anna

لِلَّذِينَ

those who

lilladhīna

ظَلَمُوا۟

did wrong

ẓalamū

مَا

(had) whatever

فِى

(is) in

ٱلْأَرْضِ

the earth

l-arḍi

جَمِيعًۭا

all

jamīʿan

وَمِثْلَهُۥ

and (the) like of it

wamith'lahu

مَعَهُۥ

with it

maʿahu

لَٱفْتَدَوْا۟

they would ransom

la-if'tadaw

بِهِۦ

with it

bihi

مِن

from

min

سُوٓءِ

(the) evil

sūi

ٱلْعَذَابِ

(of) the punishment

l-ʿadhābi

يَوْمَ

(on the) Day

yawma

ٱلْقِيَـٰمَةِ ۚ

(of) the Resurrection

l-qiyāmati

وَبَدَا

And (will) appear

wabadā

لَهُم

to them

lahum

مِّنَ

from

mina

ٱللَّهِ

Allah

l-lahi

مَا

what

لَمْ

not

lam

يَكُونُوا۟

they had

yakūnū

يَحْتَسِبُونَ

taken into account

yaḥtasibūna

٤٧

And if those who did wrong had all that is in the earth entirely and the like of it with it, they would [attempt to] ransom themselves thereby from the worst of the punishment on the Day of Resurrection. And there will appear to them from Allāh that which they had not taken into account.1

— Saheeh International

وَبَدَا

And will become apparent

wabadā

لَهُمْ

to them

lahum

سَيِّـَٔاتُ

(the) evils

sayyiātu

مَا

(of) what

كَسَبُوا۟

they earned

kasabū

وَحَاقَ

and will surround

waḥāqa

بِهِم

them

bihim

مَّا

what

كَانُوا۟

they used to

kānū

بِهِۦ

[in it]

bihi

يَسْتَهْزِءُونَ

mock

yastahziūna

٤٨

And there will appear to them the evils they had earned, and they will be enveloped by what they used to ridicule.

— Saheeh International

فَإِذَا

So when

fa-idhā

مَسَّ

touches

massa

ٱلْإِنسَـٰنَ

[the] man

l-insāna

ضُرٌّۭ

adversity

ḍurrun

دَعَانَا

he calls upon Us

daʿānā

ثُمَّ

then

thumma

إِذَا

when

idhā

خَوَّلْنَـٰهُ

We bestow (on) him

khawwalnāhu

نِعْمَةًۭ

a favor

niʿ'matan

مِّنَّا

from Us

minnā

قَالَ

he says

qāla

إِنَّمَآ

Only

innamā

أُوتِيتُهُۥ

I have been given it

ūtītuhu

عَلَىٰ

for

ʿalā

عِلْمٍۭ ۚ

knowledge

ʿil'min

بَلْ

Nay

bal

هِىَ

it

hiya

فِتْنَةٌۭ

(is) a trial

fit'natun

وَلَـٰكِنَّ

but

walākinna

أَكْثَرَهُمْ

most of them

aktharahum

لَا

(do) not

يَعْلَمُونَ

know

yaʿlamūna

٤٩

And when adversity touches man, he calls upon Us; then when We bestow on him a favor from Us, he says, "I have only been given it because of [my] knowledge." Rather, it is a trial, but most of them do not know.

— Saheeh International

قَدْ

Indeed

qad

قَالَهَا

said it

qālahā

ٱلَّذِينَ

those

alladhīna

مِن

before them

min

قَبْلِهِمْ

before them

qablihim

فَمَآ

but (did) not

famā

أَغْنَىٰ

avail

aghnā

عَنْهُم

them

ʿanhum

مَّا

what

كَانُوا۟

they used to

kānū

يَكْسِبُونَ

earn

yaksibūna

٥٠

Those before them had already said it, but they were not availed by what they used to earn.

— Saheeh International

فَأَصَابَهُمْ

Then struck them

fa-aṣābahum

سَيِّـَٔاتُ

(the) evils

sayyiātu

مَا

(of) what

كَسَبُوا۟ ۚ

they earned

kasabū

وَٱلَّذِينَ

And those who

wa-alladhīna

ظَلَمُوا۟

have wronged

ẓalamū

مِنْ

of

min

هَـٰٓؤُلَآءِ

these

hāulāi

سَيُصِيبُهُمْ

will strike them

sayuṣībuhum

سَيِّـَٔاتُ

(the) evils

sayyiātu

مَا

(of) what

كَسَبُوا۟

they earned

kasabū

وَمَا

and not

wamā

هُم

they

hum

بِمُعْجِزِينَ

will be able to escape

bimuʿ'jizīna

٥١

And the evil consequences of what they earned struck them. And those who have wronged of these [people] will be struck [i.e., afflicted] by the evil consequences of what they earned; and they will not cause failure.1

— Saheeh International

أَوَلَمْ

Do not

awalam

يَعْلَمُوٓا۟

they know

yaʿlamū

أَنَّ

that

anna

ٱللَّهَ

Allah

l-laha

يَبْسُطُ

extends

yabsuṭu

ٱلرِّزْقَ

the provision

l-riz'qa

لِمَن

for whom

liman

يَشَآءُ

He wills

yashāu

وَيَقْدِرُ ۚ

and restricts

wayaqdiru

إِنَّ

Indeed

inna

فِى

in

ذَٰلِكَ

that

dhālika

لَـَٔايَـٰتٍۢ

surely (are) signs

laāyātin

لِّقَوْمٍۢ

for a people

liqawmin

يُؤْمِنُونَ

who believe

yu'minūna

٥٢

Do they not know that Allāh extends provision for whom He wills and restricts [it]? Indeed in that are signs for a people who believe.

— Saheeh International

۞ قُلْ

Say

qul

يَـٰعِبَادِىَ

O My slaves

yāʿibādiya

ٱلَّذِينَ

Those who

alladhīna

أَسْرَفُوا۟

have transgressed

asrafū

عَلَىٰٓ

against

ʿalā

أَنفُسِهِمْ

themselves

anfusihim

لَا

(do) not

تَقْنَطُوا۟

despair

taqnaṭū

مِن

of

min

رَّحْمَةِ

(the) Mercy

raḥmati

ٱللَّهِ ۚ

(of) Allah

l-lahi

إِنَّ

Indeed

inna

ٱللَّهَ

Allah

l-laha

يَغْفِرُ

forgives

yaghfiru

ٱلذُّنُوبَ

the sins

l-dhunūba

جَمِيعًا ۚ

all

jamīʿan

إِنَّهُۥ

Indeed He

innahu

هُوَ

He

huwa

ٱلْغَفُورُ

(is) the Oft-Forgiving

l-ghafūru

ٱلرَّحِيمُ

the Most Merciful

l-raḥīmu

٥٣

Say, "O My servants who have transgressed against themselves [by sinning], do not despair of the mercy of Allāh. Indeed, Allāh forgives all sins.1 Indeed, it is He who is the Forgiving, the Merciful."

— Saheeh International

وَأَنِيبُوٓا۟

And turn

wa-anībū

إِلَىٰ

to

ilā

رَبِّكُمْ

your Lord

rabbikum

وَأَسْلِمُوا۟

and submit

wa-aslimū

لَهُۥ

to Him

lahu

مِن

before

min

قَبْلِ

before

qabli

أَن

[that]

an

يَأْتِيَكُمُ

comes to you

yatiyakumu

ٱلْعَذَابُ

the punishment

l-ʿadhābu

ثُمَّ

then

thumma

لَا

not

تُنصَرُونَ

you will be helped

tunṣarūna

٥٤

And return [in repentance] to your Lord and submit to Him before the punishment comes upon you; then you will not be helped.

— Saheeh International

وَٱتَّبِعُوٓا۟

And follow

wa-ittabiʿū

أَحْسَنَ

(the) best

aḥsana

مَآ

(of) what

أُنزِلَ

is revealed

unzila

إِلَيْكُم

to you

ilaykum

مِّن

from

min

رَّبِّكُم

your Lord

rabbikum

مِّن

before

min

قَبْلِ

before

qabli

أَن

[that]

an

يَأْتِيَكُمُ

comes to you

yatiyakumu

ٱلْعَذَابُ

the punishment

l-ʿadhābu

بَغْتَةًۭ

suddenly

baghtatan

وَأَنتُمْ

while you

wa-antum

لَا

(do) not

تَشْعُرُونَ

perceive

tashʿurūna

٥٥

And follow the best of what was revealed to you from your Lord [i.e., the Qur’ān] before the punishment comes upon you suddenly while you do not perceive,

— Saheeh International

أَن

Lest

an

تَقُولَ

should say

taqūla

نَفْسٌۭ

a soul

nafsun

يَـٰحَسْرَتَىٰ

Oh! My regret

yāḥasratā

عَلَىٰ

over

ʿalā

مَا

what

فَرَّطتُ

I neglected

farraṭtu

فِى

in

جَنۢبِ

regard (to)

janbi

ٱللَّهِ

Allah

l-lahi

وَإِن

and that

wa-in

كُنتُ

I was

kuntu

لَمِنَ

surely, among

lamina

ٱلسَّـٰخِرِينَ

the mockers

l-sākhirīna

٥٦

Lest a soul should say,1 "Oh, [how great is] my regret over what I neglected in regard to Allāh and that I was among the mockers."

— Saheeh International

أَوْ

Or

aw

تَقُولَ

it should say

taqūla

لَوْ

If that

law

أَنَّ

If that

anna

ٱللَّهَ

Allah

l-laha

هَدَىٰنِى

(had) guided me

hadānī

لَكُنتُ

surely, I (would) have been

lakuntu

مِنَ

among

mina

ٱلْمُتَّقِينَ

the righteous

l-mutaqīna

٥٧

Or [lest] it say, "If only Allāh had guided me, I would have been among the righteous."

— Saheeh International

أَوْ

Or

aw

تَقُولَ

it should say

taqūla

حِينَ

when

ḥīna

تَرَى

it sees

tarā

ٱلْعَذَابَ

the punishment

l-ʿadhāba

لَوْ

If

law

أَنَّ

only

anna

لِى

for me

كَرَّةًۭ

another chance

karratan

فَأَكُونَ

then I could be

fa-akūna

مِنَ

among

mina

ٱلْمُحْسِنِينَ

the good-doers

l-muḥ'sinīna

٥٨

Or [lest] it say when it sees the punishment, "If only I had another turn1 so I could be among the doers of good."

— Saheeh International

بَلَىٰ

Yes

balā

قَدْ

verily

qad

جَآءَتْكَ

came to you

jāatka

ءَايَـٰتِى

My Verses

āyātī

فَكَذَّبْتَ

but you denied

fakadhabta

بِهَا

them

bihā

وَٱسْتَكْبَرْتَ

and were arrogant

wa-is'takbarta

وَكُنتَ

and you were

wakunta

مِنَ

among

mina

ٱلْكَـٰفِرِينَ

the disbelievers

l-kāfirīna

٥٩

But yes, there had come to you My verses, but you denied them and were arrogant, and you were among the disbelievers.

— Saheeh International

وَيَوْمَ

And (on the) Day

wayawma

ٱلْقِيَـٰمَةِ

(of) the Resurrection

l-qiyāmati

تَرَى

you will see

tarā

ٱلَّذِينَ

those who

alladhīna

كَذَبُوا۟

lied

kadhabū

عَلَى

about

ʿalā

ٱللَّهِ

Allah

l-lahi

وُجُوهُهُم

their faces

wujūhuhum

مُّسْوَدَّةٌ ۚ

(will be) blackened

mus'waddatun

أَلَيْسَ

Is (there) not

alaysa

فِى

in

جَهَنَّمَ

Hell

jahannama

مَثْوًۭى

an abode

mathwan

لِّلْمُتَكَبِّرِينَ

for the arrogant

lil'mutakabbirīna

٦٠

And on the Day of Resurrection you will see those who lied about Allāh [with] their faces blackened. Is there not in Hell a residence for the arrogant?

— Saheeh International

وَيُنَجِّى

And Allah will deliver

wayunajjī

ٱللَّهُ

And Allah will deliver

l-lahu

ٱلَّذِينَ

those who

alladhīna

ٱتَّقَوْا۟

feared (Him)

ittaqaw

بِمَفَازَتِهِمْ

to their place of salvation

bimafāzatihim

لَا

not

يَمَسُّهُمُ

will touch them

yamassuhumu

ٱلسُّوٓءُ

the evil

l-sūu

وَلَا

and not

walā

هُمْ

they

hum

يَحْزَنُونَ

will grieve

yaḥzanūna

٦١

And Allāh will save those who feared Him by their attainment;1 no evil will touch them, nor will they grieve.

— Saheeh International

ٱللَّهُ

Allah

al-lahu

خَـٰلِقُ

(is the) Creator

khāliqu

كُلِّ

(of) all

kulli

شَىْءٍۢ ۖ

things

shayin

وَهُوَ

and He

wahuwa

عَلَىٰ

(is) over

ʿalā

كُلِّ

all

kulli

شَىْءٍۢ

things

shayin

وَكِيلٌۭ

a Guardian

wakīlun

٦٢

Allāh is the Creator of all things, and He is, over all things, Disposer of affairs.

— Saheeh International

لَّهُۥ

For Him

lahu

مَقَالِيدُ

(are the) keys

maqālīdu

ٱلسَّمَـٰوَٰتِ

(of) the heavens

l-samāwāti

وَٱلْأَرْضِ ۗ

and the earth

wal-arḍi

وَٱلَّذِينَ

And those who

wa-alladhīna

كَفَرُوا۟

disbelieve

kafarū

بِـَٔايَـٰتِ

in (the) Verses

biāyāti

ٱللَّهِ

(of) Allah

l-lahi

أُو۟لَـٰٓئِكَ

those

ulāika

هُمُ

they

humu

ٱلْخَـٰسِرُونَ

(are) the losers

l-khāsirūna

٦٣

To Him belong the keys of the heavens and the earth. And they who disbelieve in the verses of Allāh - it is those who are the losers.

— Saheeh International

قُلْ

Say

qul

أَفَغَيْرَ

Is (it) other than

afaghayra

ٱللَّهِ

Allah

l-lahi

تَأْمُرُوٓنِّىٓ

you order me

tamurūnnī

أَعْبُدُ

(to) worship

aʿbudu

أَيُّهَا

O

ayyuhā

ٱلْجَـٰهِلُونَ

ignorant ones

l-jāhilūna

٦٤

Say, [O Muḥammad], "Is it other than Allāh that you order me to worship, O ignorant ones?"

— Saheeh International

وَلَقَدْ

And verily

walaqad

أُوحِىَ

it has been revealed

ūḥiya

إِلَيْكَ

to you

ilayka

وَإِلَى

and to

wa-ilā

ٱلَّذِينَ

those who

alladhīna

مِن

(were) before you

min

قَبْلِكَ

(were) before you

qablika

لَئِنْ

if

la-in

أَشْرَكْتَ

you associate (with Allah)

ashrakta

لَيَحْبَطَنَّ

surely, will become worthless

layaḥbaṭanna

عَمَلُكَ

your deeds

ʿamaluka

وَلَتَكُونَنَّ

and you will surely be

walatakūnanna

مِنَ

among

mina

ٱلْخَـٰسِرِينَ

the losers

l-khāsirīna

٦٥

And it was already revealed to you and to those before you that if you should associate [anything] with Allāh, your work would surely become worthless, and you would surely be among the losers.

— Saheeh International

بَلِ

Nay

bali

ٱللَّهَ

But worship Allah

l-laha

فَٱعْبُدْ

But worship Allah

fa-uʿ'bud

وَكُن

and be

wakun

مِّنَ

among

mina

ٱلشَّـٰكِرِينَ

the thankful ones

l-shākirīna

٦٦

Rather, worship [only] Allāh and be among the grateful.

— Saheeh International

وَمَا

And not

wamā

قَدَرُوا۟

they appraised

qadarū

ٱللَّهَ

Allah

l-laha

حَقَّ

(with) true

ḥaqqa

قَدْرِهِۦ

appraisal

qadrihi

وَٱلْأَرْضُ

while the earth

wal-arḍu

جَمِيعًۭا

entirely

jamīʿan

قَبْضَتُهُۥ

(will be) in His Grip

qabḍatuhu

يَوْمَ

(on the) Day

yawma

ٱلْقِيَـٰمَةِ

(of) the Resurrection

l-qiyāmati

وَٱلسَّمَـٰوَٰتُ

and the heavens

wal-samāwātu

مَطْوِيَّـٰتٌۢ

(will be) folded

maṭwiyyātun

بِيَمِينِهِۦ ۚ

in His Right Hand

biyamīnihi

سُبْحَـٰنَهُۥ

Glory be to Him

sub'ḥānahu

وَتَعَـٰلَىٰ

And High is He

wataʿālā

عَمَّا

above what

ʿammā

يُشْرِكُونَ

they associate (with Him)

yush'rikūna

٦٧

They have not appraised Allāh with true appraisal,1 while the earth entirely will be [within] His grip2 on the Day of Resurrection, and the heavens will be folded in His right hand.3 Exalted is He and high above what they associate with Him.

— Saheeh International

وَنُفِخَ

And (will) be blown

wanufikha

فِى

[in]

ٱلصُّورِ

the trumpet

l-ṣūri

فَصَعِقَ

then (will) fall dead

faṣaʿiqa

مَن

whoever

man

فِى

(is) in

ٱلسَّمَـٰوَٰتِ

the heavens

l-samāwāti

وَمَن

and whoever

waman

فِى

(is) on

ٱلْأَرْضِ

the earth

l-arḍi

إِلَّا

except

illā

مَن

whom

man

شَآءَ

Allah wills

shāa

ٱللَّهُ ۖ

Allah wills

l-lahu

ثُمَّ

Then

thumma

نُفِخَ

(it will) be blown

nufikha

فِيهِ

[in it]

fīhi

أُخْرَىٰ

a second time

ukh'rā

فَإِذَا

and behold

fa-idhā

هُمْ

They

hum

قِيَامٌۭ

(will be) standing

qiyāmun

يَنظُرُونَ

waiting

yanẓurūna

٦٨

And the Horn will be blown, and whoever is in the heavens and whoever is on the earth will fall dead except whom Allāh wills. Then it will be blown again, and at once they will be standing, looking on.

— Saheeh International

وَأَشْرَقَتِ

And (will) shine

wa-ashraqati

ٱلْأَرْضُ

the earth

l-arḍu

بِنُورِ

with (the) light

binūri

رَبِّهَا

(of) its Lord

rabbihā

وَوُضِعَ

and (will) be placed

wawuḍiʿa

ٱلْكِتَـٰبُ

the Record

l-kitābu

وَجِا۟ىٓءَ

and (will) be brought

wajīa

بِٱلنَّبِيِّـۧنَ

the Prophets

bil-nabiyīna

وَٱلشُّهَدَآءِ

and the witnesses

wal-shuhadāi

وَقُضِىَ

and it (will) be judged

waquḍiya

بَيْنَهُم

between them

baynahum

بِٱلْحَقِّ

in truth

bil-ḥaqi

وَهُمْ

and they

wahum

لَا

will not be wronged

يُظْلَمُونَ

will not be wronged

yuẓ'lamūna

٦٩

And the earth will shine with the light of its Lord, and the record [of deeds] will be placed, and the prophets and the witnesses will be brought, and it will be judged between them in truth, and they will not be wronged.

— Saheeh International

وَوُفِّيَتْ

And (will) be paid in full

wawuffiyat

كُلُّ

every

kullu

نَفْسٍۢ

soul

nafsin

مَّا

what

عَمِلَتْ

it did

ʿamilat

وَهُوَ

and He

wahuwa

أَعْلَمُ

(is the) Best-Knower

aʿlamu

بِمَا

of what

bimā

يَفْعَلُونَ

they do

yafʿalūna

٧٠

And every soul will be fully compensated [for] what it did; and He is most knowing1 of what they do.

— Saheeh International

وَسِيقَ

And (will) be driven

wasīqa

ٱلَّذِينَ

those who

alladhīna

كَفَرُوٓا۟

disbelieve

kafarū

إِلَىٰ

to

ilā

جَهَنَّمَ

Hell

jahannama

زُمَرًا ۖ

(in) groups

zumaran

حَتَّىٰٓ

until

ḥattā

إِذَا

when

idhā

جَآءُوهَا

they reach it

jāūhā

فُتِحَتْ

(will) be opened

futiḥat

أَبْوَٰبُهَا

its gates

abwābuhā

وَقَالَ

and (will) say

waqāla

لَهُمْ

to them

lahum

خَزَنَتُهَآ

its keepers

khazanatuhā

أَلَمْ

Did not

alam

يَأْتِكُمْ

come to you

yatikum

رُسُلٌۭ

Messengers

rusulun

مِّنكُمْ

from you

minkum

يَتْلُونَ

reciting

yatlūna

عَلَيْكُمْ

to you

ʿalaykum

ءَايَـٰتِ

(the) Verses

āyāti

رَبِّكُمْ

(of) your Lord

rabbikum

وَيُنذِرُونَكُمْ

and warning you

wayundhirūnakum

لِقَآءَ

(of the) meeting

liqāa

يَوْمِكُمْ

(of) your Day

yawmikum

هَـٰذَا ۚ

this

hādhā

قَالُوا۟

They (will) say

qālū

بَلَىٰ

Yes

balā

وَلَـٰكِنْ

But

walākin

حَقَّتْ

has been justified

ḥaqqat

كَلِمَةُ

(the) word

kalimatu

ٱلْعَذَابِ

(of) punishment

l-ʿadhābi

عَلَى

against

ʿalā

ٱلْكَـٰفِرِينَ

the disbelievers

l-kāfirīna

٧١

And those who disbelieved will be driven to Hell in groups until, when they reach it, its gates are opened and its keepers will say, "Did there not come to you messengers from yourselves, reciting to you the verses of your Lord and warning you of the meeting of this Day of yours?" They will say, "Yes, but the word [i.e., decree] of punishment has come into effect upon the disbelievers."

— Saheeh International

قِيلَ

It will be said

qīla

ٱدْخُلُوٓا۟

Enter

ud'khulū

أَبْوَٰبَ

(the) gates

abwāba

جَهَنَّمَ

(of) Hell

jahannama

خَـٰلِدِينَ

(to) abide eternally

khālidīna

فِيهَا ۖ

therein

fīhā

فَبِئْسَ

and wretched is

fabi'sa

مَثْوَى

(the) abode

mathwā

ٱلْمُتَكَبِّرِينَ

(of) the arrogant

l-mutakabirīna

٧٢

[To them] it will be said, "Enter the gates of Hell to abide eternally therein, and wretched is the residence of the arrogant."

— Saheeh International

وَسِيقَ

And (will) be driven

wasīqa

ٱلَّذِينَ

those who

alladhīna

ٱتَّقَوْا۟

feared

ittaqaw

رَبَّهُمْ

their Lord

rabbahum

إِلَى

to

ilā

ٱلْجَنَّةِ

Paradise

l-janati

زُمَرًا ۖ

(in) groups

zumaran

حَتَّىٰٓ

until

ḥattā

إِذَا

when

idhā

جَآءُوهَا

they reach it

jāūhā

وَفُتِحَتْ

and (will) be opened

wafutiḥat

أَبْوَٰبُهَا

its gates

abwābuhā

وَقَالَ

and (will) say

waqāla

لَهُمْ

to them

lahum

خَزَنَتُهَا

its keepers

khazanatuhā

سَلَـٰمٌ

Peace be

salāmun

عَلَيْكُمْ

upon you

ʿalaykum

طِبْتُمْ

you have done well

ṭib'tum

فَٱدْخُلُوهَا

so enter it

fa-ud'khulūhā

خَـٰلِدِينَ

(to) abide eternally

khālidīna

٧٣

But those who feared their Lord will be driven to Paradise in groups until, when they reach it while its gates have been opened and its keepers say, "Peace be upon you; you have become pure; so enter it to abide eternally therein," [they will enter].1

— Saheeh International

وَقَالُوا۟

And they will say

waqālū

ٱلْحَمْدُ

All praise

l-ḥamdu

لِلَّهِ

(be) to Allah

lillahi

ٱلَّذِى

Who

alladhī

صَدَقَنَا

has fulfilled for us

ṣadaqanā

وَعْدَهُۥ

His promise

waʿdahu

وَأَوْرَثَنَا

and has made us inherit

wa-awrathanā

ٱلْأَرْضَ

the earth

l-arḍa

نَتَبَوَّأُ

we may settle

natabawwa-u

مِنَ

[from]

mina

ٱلْجَنَّةِ

(in) Paradise

l-janati

حَيْثُ

wherever

ḥaythu

نَشَآءُ ۖ

we wish

nashāu

فَنِعْمَ

So excellent

faniʿ'ma

أَجْرُ

(is the) reward

ajru

ٱلْعَـٰمِلِينَ

(of) the workers

l-ʿāmilīna

٧٤

And they will say, "Praise to Allāh, who has fulfilled for us His promise and made us inherit the earth [so] we may settle in Paradise wherever we will. And excellent is the reward of [righteous] workers."

— Saheeh International

وَتَرَى

And you will see

watarā

ٱلْمَلَـٰٓئِكَةَ

the Angels

l-malāikata

حَآفِّينَ

surrounding

ḥāffīna

مِنْ

[from]

min

حَوْلِ

around

ḥawli

ٱلْعَرْشِ

the Throne

l-ʿarshi

يُسَبِّحُونَ

glorifying

yusabbiḥūna

بِحَمْدِ

(the) praise

biḥamdi

رَبِّهِمْ ۖ

(of) their Lord

rabbihim

وَقُضِىَ

And (will) be judged

waquḍiya

بَيْنَهُم

between them

baynahum

بِٱلْحَقِّ

in truth

bil-ḥaqi

وَقِيلَ

and it will be said

waqīla

ٱلْحَمْدُ

All praise be

l-ḥamdu

لِلَّهِ

to Allah

lillahi

رَبِّ

(the) Lord

rabbi

ٱلْعَـٰلَمِينَ

(of) the worlds

l-ʿālamīna

٧٥

And you will see the angels surrounding the Throne, exalting [Allāh] with praise of their Lord. And it will be judged between them in truth, and it will be said, "[All] praise to Allāh, Lord of the worlds."

— Saheeh International
