Aţ-Ţāriq
The Nightcommer

الطارق
وَٱلسَّمَآءِ By the sky wal-samāi and the night comer wal-ṭāriqi
By the sky and the night comer
وَمَآ And what wamā can make you know adrāka what mā the night comer (is) l-ṭāriqu
And what can make you know what is the night comer?
ٱلنَّجْمُ (It is) the star al-najmu the piercing l-thāqibu
It is the piercing star1
إِن Not in (is) every kullu soul nafsin but lammā over it ʿalayhā (is) a protector ḥāfiẓun
There is no soul but that it has over it a protector.
فَلْيَنظُرِ So let see falyanẓuri man l-insānu from what mimma he is created khuliqa
So let man observe from what he was created.
خُلِقَ He is created khuliqa from min a water māin ejected dāfiqin
He was created from a fluid, ejected,
يَخْرُجُ Coming forth yakhruju from min between bayni the backbone l-ṣul'bi and the ribs wal-tarāibi
Emerging from between the backbone and the ribs.
إِنَّهُۥ Indeed, He innahu to ʿalā return him rajʿihi (is) Able laqādirun
Indeed, He [i.e., Allāh], to return him [to life], is Able.
يَوْمَ (The) Day yawma will be tested tub'lā the secrets l-sarāiru
The Day when secrets will be put on trial,1
فَمَا Then not famā (is) for him lahu any min power quwwatin and not walā any helper nāṣirin
Then he [i.e., man] will have no power or any helper.
وَٱلسَّمَآءِ By the sky wal-samāi which dhāti returns l-rajʿi
By the sky which sends back1
وَٱلْأَرْضِ And the earth wal-arḍi which dhāti cracks open l-ṣadʿi
And [by] the earth which splits,1
إِنَّهُۥ Indeed, it innahu (is) surely a Word laqawlun decisive faṣlun
Indeed, it [i.e., the Qur’ān] is a decisive statement,
وَمَا And not wamā it huwa (is) for amusement bil-hazli
And it is not amusement.
إِنَّهُمْ Indeed, they innahum are plotting yakīdūna a plot kaydan
Indeed, they are planning a plan,
فَمَهِّلِ So give respite famahhili (to) the disbelievers l-kāfirīna Give respite to them amhil'hum little ruwaydan
So allow time for the disbelievers. Leave them awhile.1
