ٱلْحَمْدُ (All) the praises and thanks al-ḥamdu (be) to Allah lillahi the One Who alladhī created khalaqa the heavens l-samāwāti and the earth wal-arḍa and made wajaʿala the darkness[es] l-ẓulumāti and the light wal-nūra Then thumma those who alladhīna disbelieved kafarū in their Lord birabbihim equate others with Him yaʿdilūna
[All] praise is [due] to Allāh, who created the heavens and the earth and made the darkness and the light. Then those who disbelieve equate [others] with their Lord.
هُوَ He huwa (is) the One Who alladhī created you khalaqakum from min clay ṭīnin then thumma He decreed qaḍā a term ajalan and a term wa-ajalun specified musamman with Him ʿindahu yet thumma you antum doubt tamtarūna
It is He who created you from clay and then decreed a term1 and a specified time [known] to Him;2 then [still] you are in dispute.
وَهُوَ And He wahuwa (is) Allah l-lahu in fī the heavens l-samāwāti and in wafī the earth l-arḍi He knows yaʿlamu your secret sirrakum and what you make public wajahrakum and He knows wayaʿlamu what mā you earn taksibūna
And He is Allāh, [the only deity] in the heavens and the earth. He knows your secret and what you make public, and He knows that which you earn.
وَمَا And not wamā comes to them tatīhim [of] min any sign āyatin from min (the) Signs āyāti (of) their Lord rabbihim but illā they are kānū from it ʿanhā turning away muʿ'riḍīna
And no sign comes to them from the signs of their Lord except that they turn away therefrom.
فَقَدْ Then indeed faqad they denied kadhabū the truth bil-ḥaqi when lammā it came to them jāahum but soon fasawfa will come to them yatīhim news anbāu (of) what mā they used to kānū [at it] bihi mock yastahziūna
For they had denied the truth when it came to them, but there is going to reach them the news of what they used to ridicule.1
أَلَمْ Did not alam they see yaraw how many kam We destroyed ahlaknā from min before them qablihim of min generations qarnin We had established them makkannāhum in fī the earth l-arḍi what mā not lam We (have) established numakkin for you lakum And We sent wa-arsalnā (rain from) the sky l-samāa upon them ʿalayhim showering abundantly mid'rāran and We made wajaʿalnā the rivers l-anhāra flow tajrī from min underneath them taḥtihim Then We destroyed them fa-ahlaknāhum for their sins bidhunūbihim and We raised wa-anshanā from min after them baʿdihim generations qarnan other ākharīna
Have they not seen how many generations We destroyed before them which We had established upon the earth as We have not established you? And We sent [rain from] the sky upon them in showers and made rivers flow beneath them; then We destroyed them for their sins and brought forth after them a generation of others.
وَلَوْ And (even) if walaw We (had) sent down nazzalnā to you ʿalayka a written Scripture kitāban in fī a parchment qir'ṭāsin and they touched it falamasūhu with their hands bi-aydīhim surely (would) have said laqāla those who alladhīna disbelieved kafarū Not in (is) this hādhā but illā magic siḥ'run clear mubīnun
And even if We had sent down to you, [O Muḥammad], a written scripture on a page and they touched it with their hands, the disbelievers would say, "This is not but obvious magic."
وَقَالُوا۟ And they said waqālū Why has not been lawlā sent down unzila to him ʿalayhi an Angel malakun And if walaw We (had) sent down anzalnā an Angel malakan surely (would) have been decided laquḍiya the matter l-amru then thumma no lā respite would have been granted to them yunẓarūna
And they say, "Why was there not sent down to him an angel?"1 But if We had sent down an angel, the matter would have been decided;2 then they would not be reprieved.
وَلَوْ And if walaw We had made him jaʿalnāhu an Angel malakan certainly We (would) have made him lajaʿalnāhu a man rajulan and certainly We (would) have obscured walalabasnā to them ʿalayhim what mā they are obscuring yalbisūna
And if We had made him [i.e., the messenger] an angel, We would have made him [appear as] a man, and We would have covered them with that in which they cover themselves [i.e., confusion and doubt].
وَلَقَدِ And indeed walaqadi were mocked us'tuh'zi-a Messengers birusulin from min before you qablika but surrounded faḥāqa those who bi-alladhīna scoffed sakhirū of them min'hum what mā they used to kānū [at it] bihi mock yastahziūna
And already were messengers ridiculed before you, but those who mocked them were enveloped by that which they used to ridicule.
قُلْ Say qul Travel sīrū in fī the earth l-arḍi and thumma see unẓurū how kayfa was kāna (the) end ʿāqibatu (of) the rejecters l-mukadhibīna
Say, "Travel through the land; then observe how was the end of the deniers."
قُل Say qul To whom (belongs) liman what mā (is) in fī the heavens l-samāwāti and the earth wal-arḍi Say qul To Allah lillahi He has decreed kataba upon ʿalā Himself nafsihi the Mercy l-raḥmata Surely He will assemble you layajmaʿannakum on ilā (the) Day yawmi (of) the Resurrection l-qiyāmati (there is) no lā doubt rayba about it fīhi Those who alladhīna have lost khasirū themselves anfusahum then they fahum (do) not lā believe yu'minūna
Say, "To whom belongs whatever is in the heavens and earth?" Say, "To Allāh." He has decreed upon Himself mercy. He will surely assemble you for the Day of Resurrection, about which there is no doubt. Those who will lose themselves [that Day] do not believe.
۞ وَلَهُۥ And for Him walahu (is) whatever mā dwells sakana in fī the night al-layli and the day wal-nahāri and He wahuwa (is) All-Hearing l-samīʿu All-Knowing l-ʿalīmu
And to Him belongs that which reposes by night and by day, and He is the Hearing, the Knowing.
قُلْ Say qul Is it other than aghayra Allah l-lahi I (should) take attakhidhu (as) a protector waliyyan Creator fāṭiri (of) the heavens l-samāwāti and the earth wal-arḍi while (it is) He wahuwa Who feeds yuṭ'ʿimu and not walā He is fed yuṭ'ʿamu Say qul Indeed I innī [I] am commanded umir'tu that an I be akūna (the) first awwala who man submits (to Allah) aslama and not walā be takūnanna of mina the polytheists l-mush'rikīna
Say, "Is it other than Allāh I should take as a protector, Creator of the heavens and earth, while it is He who feeds and is not fed?" Say, [O Muḥammad], "Indeed, I have been commanded to be the first [among you] who submit [to Allāh] and [was commanded], 'Do not ever be of the polytheists."
قُلْ Say qul Indeed, I innī [I] fear akhāfu if in I disobeyed ʿaṣaytu my Lord rabbī punishment ʿadhāba (of) a Day yawmin Mighty ʿaẓīmin
Say, "Indeed I fear, if I should disobey my Lord, the punishment of a tremendous Day."
مَّن Whoever man is averted yuṣ'raf from it ʿanhu that Day yawma-idhin then surely faqad He had Mercy on him raḥimahu And that wadhālika (is) the success l-fawzu (the) clear l-mubīnu
He from whom it is averted that Day - [Allāh] has granted him mercy. And that is the clear attainment.
وَإِن And if wa-in touches you yamsaska Allah l-lahu with affliction biḍurrin then no falā remover kāshifa of it lahu except illā Him huwa And if wa-in He touches you yamsaska with good bikhayrin then He fahuwa (is) on ʿalā every kulli thing shayin All-Powerful qadīrun
And if Allāh should touch you with adversity, there is no remover of it except Him. And if He touches you with good - then He is over all things competent.
وَهُوَ And He wahuwa (is) the Subjugator l-qāhiru over fawqa His slaves ʿibādihi And He wahuwa (is) the All-Wise l-ḥakīmu the All-Aware l-khabīru
And He is the subjugator over His servants. And He is the Wise,1 the Aware.2
قُلْ Say qul What ayyu thing shayin (is) greatest akbaru (as) a testimony shahādatan Say quli Allah l-lahu (is) Witness shahīdun between me baynī and between you wabaynakum and has been revealed waūḥiya to me ilayya this hādhā [the] Quran l-qur'ānu that I may warn you li-undhirakum with it bihi and whoever waman it reaches balagha Do you truly a-innakum testify latashhadūna that anna with maʿa Allah l-lahi (there are) gods ālihatan other ukh'rā Say qul Not lā (do) I testify ashhadu Say qul Only innamā He huwa (is) God ilāhun One wāḥidun and indeed, I am wa-innanī free barīon of what mimmā you associate (with Him) tush'rikūna
Say, "What thing is greatest in testimony?" Say, "Allāh is witness between me and you. And this Qur’ān was revealed to me that I may warn you thereby and whomever it reaches.1 Do you [truly] testify that with Allāh there are other deities?" Say, "I will not testify [with you]." Say, "Indeed, He is but one God, and indeed, I am free of what you associate [with Him]."
ٱلَّذِينَ Those (to) whom alladhīna We have given them ātaynāhumu the Book l-kitāba they recognize him yaʿrifūnahu as kamā they recognize yaʿrifūna their sons abnāahumu Those who alladhīna lost khasirū themselves anfusahum then they fahum (do) not lā believe yu'minūna
Those to whom We have given the Scripture recognize it1 as they recognize their [own] sons. Those who will lose themselves [in the Hereafter] do not believe.
وَمَنْ And who waman (is) more unjust aẓlamu than (he) who mimmani invents if'tarā against ʿalā Allah l-lahi a lie kadhiban or aw rejects kadhaba His Signs biāyātihi Indeed innahu not lā will be successful yuf'liḥu the wrongdoers l-ẓālimūna
And who is more unjust than one who invents about Allāh a lie or denies His verses? Indeed, the wrongdoers will not succeed.
وَيَوْمَ And (the) Day wayawma We will gather them naḥshuruhum all jamīʿan then thumma We will say naqūlu to those who lilladhīna associated others with Allah ashrakū Where (are) ayna your partners shurakāukumu those whom alladhīna you used to kuntum claim tazʿumūna
And [mention, O Muḥammad], the Day We will gather them all together; then We will say to those who associated others with Allāh, "Where are your 'partners' that you used to claim [with Him]?"
ثُمَّ Then thumma not lam will be takun (for) them a plea fit'natuhum except illā that an they say qālū By Allah wal-lahi our Lord rabbinā not mā we were kunnā those who associated others (with Allah) mush'rikīna
Then there will be no [excuse upon] examination except they will say, "By Allāh, our Lord, we were not those who associated."
ٱنظُرْ Look unẓur how kayfa they lied kadhabū against ʿalā themselves anfusihim And lost waḍalla from them ʿanhum what mā they used to kānū invent yaftarūna
See how they will lie about themselves. And lost from them will be what they used to invent.
وَمِنْهُم And among them wamin'hum (are those) who man listen yastamiʿu to you ilayka but We have placed wajaʿalnā over ʿalā their hearts qulūbihim coverings akinnatan lest an they understand it yafqahūhu and in wafī their ears ādhānihim deafness waqran And if wa-in they see yaraw every kulla sign āyatin not lā will they believe yu'minū in it bihā Until ḥattā when idhā they come to you jāūka and argue with you yujādilūnaka say yaqūlu those who alladhīna disbelieved kafarū Not in (is) this hādhā but illā (the) tales asāṭīru (of) the former (people) l-awalīna
And among them are those who listen to you,1 but We have placed over their hearts coverings, lest they understand it, and in their ears deafness. And if they should see every sign, they will not believe in it. Even when they come to you arguing with you, those who disbelieve say, "This is not but legends of the former peoples."
وَهُمْ And they wahum forbid (others) yanhawna from it ʿanhu and they keep away wayanawna from it ʿanhu And not wa-in they destroy yuh'likūna except illā themselves anfusahum and not wamā they perceive yashʿurūna
And they prevent [others] from him and are [themselves] remote from him. And they do not destroy except themselves, but they perceive [it] not.
وَلَوْ And if walaw you (could) see tarā when idh they are made to stand wuqifū by ʿalā the Fire l-nāri then they (will) say faqālū Oh! Would that we yālaytanā were sent back nuraddu and not walā we would deny nukadhiba (the) Signs biāyāti (of) our Lord rabbinā and we would be wanakūna among mina the believers l-mu'minīna
If you could but see when they are made to stand before the Fire and will say, "Oh, would that we could be returned [to life on earth] and not deny the signs of our Lord and be among the believers."
بَلْ Nay bal became manifest badā for them lahum what mā they used to kānū conceal yukh'fūna from min before qablu And if walaw they were sent back ruddū certainly they (would) return laʿādū to what limā they were forbidden nuhū from it ʿanhu and indeed they wa-innahum certainly are liars lakādhibūna
But what they concealed before has [now] appeared to them. And even if they were returned, they would return to that which they were forbidden; and indeed, they are liars.
وَقَالُوٓا۟ And they said waqālū Not in it (is) hiya except illā our life ḥayātunā (of) the world l-dun'yā and not wamā we naḥnu (will be) resurrected bimabʿūthīna
And they say, "There is none but our worldly life, and we will not be resurrected."
وَلَوْ And if walaw you (could) see tarā when idh they will be made to stand wuqifū before ʿalā their Lord rabbihim He (will) say qāla Is not alaysa this hādhā the truth bil-ḥaqi They will say qālū Yes balā by our Lord warabbinā He (will) say qāla So taste fadhūqū the punishment l-ʿadhāba because bimā you used to kuntum disbelieve takfurūna
If you could but see when they will be made to stand before their Lord. He will say, "Is this not the truth?" They will say, "Yes, by our Lord." He will [then] say, "So taste the punishment for what you used to deny."
قَدْ Indeed qad incurred loss khasira those who alladhīna denied kadhabū in (the) meeting biliqāi (with) Allah l-lahi until ḥattā when idhā came to them jāathumu the Hour l-sāʿatu suddenly baghtatan they said qālū Oh! Our regret yāḥasratanā over ʿalā what mā we neglected farraṭnā concerning it fīhā while they wahum will bear yaḥmilūna their burdens awzārahum on ʿalā their backs ẓuhūrihim Unquestionably alā Evil sāa (is) what mā they bear yazirūna
Those will have lost who deny the meeting with Allāh, until when the Hour [of resurrection] comes upon them unexpectedly, they will say, "Oh, [how great is] our regret over what we neglected concerning it [i.e., the Hour]," while they bear their burdens [i.e., sins] on their backs. Unquestionably, evil is that which they bear.
وَمَا And not wamā (is) the life l-ḥayatu (of) the world l-dun'yā except illā a play laʿibun and amusement walahwun but the home walalddāru (of) the Hereafter l-ākhiratu (is) best khayrun for those who lilladhīna (are) God conscious yattaqūna Then not afalā (will) you reason taʿqilūna
And the worldly life is not but amusement and diversion; but the home of the Hereafter is best for those who fear Allāh, so will you not reason?
قَدْ Indeed qad We know naʿlamu that it innahu grieves you layaḥzunuka what alladhī they say yaqūlūna And indeed, they fa-innahum (do) not lā deny you yukadhibūnaka but walākinna the wrongdoers l-ẓālimīna the Verses biāyāti (of) Allah l-lahi they reject yajḥadūna
We know that you, [O Muḥammad], are saddened by what they say. And indeed, they do not call you untruthful, but it is the verses of Allāh that the wrongdoers reject.
وَلَقَدْ And surely walaqad were rejected kudhibat Messengers rusulun from min before you qablika but they were patient faṣabarū over ʿalā what mā they were rejected kudhibū and they were harmed waūdhū until ḥattā came to them atāhum Our help naṣrunā And no walā one (can) alter mubaddila (the) words likalimāti (of) Allah l-lahi and surely walaqad has come to you jāaka of min (the) news naba-i (of) the Messengers l-mur'salīna
And certainly were messengers denied before you, but they were patient over the denial, and they were harmed until Our victory came to them. And none can alter the words [i.e., decrees] of Allāh. And there has certainly come to you some information about the [previous] messengers.
وَإِن And if wa-in is kāna difficult kabura for you ʿalayka their aversion iʿ'rāḍuhum then if fa-ini you are able is'taṭaʿta to an seek tabtaghiya a tunnel nafaqan in fī the earth l-arḍi or aw a ladder sullaman into fī the sky l-samāi so that you bring to them fatatiyahum a Sign biāyatin But if walaw (had) willed shāa Allah l-lahu surely He (would) have gathered them lajamaʿahum on ʿalā the guidance l-hudā So (do) not falā be takūnanna of mina the ignorant l-jāhilīna
And if their evasion is difficult for you, then if you are able to seek a tunnel into the earth or a stairway into the sky to bring them a sign, [then do so]. But if Allāh had willed, He would have united them upon guidance. So never be of the ignorant.
۞ إِنَّمَا Only innamā respond yastajību those who alladhīna listen yasmaʿūna But the dead wal-mawtā will resurrect them yabʿathuhumu Allah l-lahu then thumma to Him ilayhi they will be returned yur'jaʿūna
Only those who hear will respond. But the dead1 - Allāh will resurrect them; then to Him they will be returned.
وَقَالُوا۟ And they said waqālū Why (is) not lawlā sent down nuzzila to him ʿalayhi a Sign āyatun from min his Lord rabbihi Say qul Indeed inna Allah l-laha (is) Able qādirun [on] ʿalā to an send down yunazzila a Sign āyatan but walākinna most of them aktharahum (do) not lā know yaʿlamūna
And they say, "Why has a sign not been sent down to him from his Lord?" Say, "Indeed, Allāh is Able to send down a sign, but most of them do not know."
وَمَا And not wamā [of] min any animal dābbatin in fī the earth l-arḍi and not walā a bird ṭāirin (that) flies yaṭīru with its wings bijanāḥayhi but illā (are) communities umamun like you amthālukum Not mā We have neglected farraṭnā in fī the Book l-kitābi [of] min anything shayin then thumma to ilā their Lord rabbihim they will be gathered yuḥ'sharūna
And there is no creature on [or within] the earth or bird that flies with its wings except [that they are] communities like you. We have not neglected in the Register1 a thing. Then unto their Lord they will be gathered.
وَٱلَّذِينَ And those who wa-alladhīna rejected kadhabū Our Verses biāyātinā (are) deaf ṣummun and dumb wabuk'mun in fī the darkness[es] l-ẓulumāti Whoever man wills yasha-i Allah l-lahu He lets him go astray yuḍ'lil'hu and whoever waman He wills yasha He places him yajʿalhu on ʿalā (the) way ṣirāṭin (the) straight mus'taqīmin
But those who deny Our verses are deaf and dumb within darknesses. Whomever Allāh wills - He sends astray; and whomever He wills - He puts him on a straight path.
قُلْ Say qul Have you seen ara-aytakum if in (there) came to you atākum punishment ʿadhābu (of) Allah l-lahi or aw (there) came to you atatkumu the Hour l-sāʿatu is it other aghayra (than) Allah l-lahi you call tadʿūna if in you are kuntum truthful ṣādiqīna
Say, "Have you considered:1 if there came to you the punishment of Allāh or there came to you the Hour - is it other than Allāh you would invoke, if you should be truthful?"
بَلْ Nay bal Him Alone iyyāhu you call tadʿūna and He would remove fayakshifu what mā you call tadʿūna upon Him ilayhi if in He wills shāa and you will forget watansawna what mā you associate (with Him) tush'rikūna
No, it is Him [alone] you would invoke, and He would remove that for which you invoked Him if He willed, and you would forget what you associate [with Him].
وَلَقَدْ And certainly walaqad We sent (Messengers) arsalnā to ilā nations umamin from min before you qablika then We seized them fa-akhadhnāhum with adversity bil-basāi and hardship wal-ḍarāi so that they may laʿallahum humble themselves yataḍarraʿūna
And We have already sent [messengers] to nations before you, [O Muḥammad]; then We seized them with poverty and hardship that perhaps they might humble themselves [to Us].
فَلَوْلَآ Then why not falawlā when idh came to them jāahum Our punishment basunā they humbled themselves taḍarraʿū But walākin became hardened qasat their hearts qulūbuhum and made fair-seeming wazayyana to them lahumu the Shaitaan l-shayṭānu what mā they used to kānū do yaʿmalūna
Then why, when Our punishment came to them, did they not humble themselves? But their hearts became hardened, and Satan made attractive to them that which they were doing.
فَلَمَّا So when falammā they forgot nasū what mā they were reminded dhukkirū of [it] bihi We opened fataḥnā on them ʿalayhim gates abwāba (of) every kulli thing shayin until ḥattā when idhā they rejoiced fariḥū in what bimā they were given ūtū We seized them akhadhnāhum suddenly baghtatan and then fa-idhā they hum (were) dumbfounded mub'lisūna
So when they forgot that by which they had been reminded,1 We opened to them the doors of every [good] thing until, when they rejoiced in that which they were given, We seized them suddenly, and they were [then] in despair.
فَقُطِعَ So was cut off faquṭiʿa (the) remnant dābiru (of) the people l-qawmi [those] who alladhīna did wrong ẓalamū And all praises and thanks wal-ḥamdu (be) to Allah lillahi Lord rabbi (of) the worlds l-ʿālamīna
So the people that committed wrong were eliminated. And praise to Allāh, Lord of the worlds.
قُلْ Say qul Have you seen ara-aytum if in took away akhadha Allah l-lahu your hearing samʿakum and your sight wa-abṣārakum and sealed wakhatama [on] ʿalā your hearts qulūbikum who man (is the) god ilāhun other than ghayru Allah l-lahi to bring [back] to you yatīkum with it bihi See unẓur how kayfa We explain nuṣarrifu the Signs l-āyāti yet thumma they hum turn away yaṣdifūna
Say, "Have you considered:1 if Allāh should take away your hearing and your sight and set a seal upon your hearts, which deity other than Allāh could bring them [back] to you?" Look how We diversify2 the verses; then they [still] turn away.
قُلْ Say qul Have you seen ara-aytakum if in comes to you atākum punishment ʿadhābu (of) Allah l-lahi suddenly baghtatan or aw openly jahratan will hal (any) be destroyed yuh'laku except illā the people l-qawmu the wrongdoers l-ẓālimūna
Say, "Have you considered: if the punishment of Allāh should come to you unexpectedly or manifestly,1 will any be destroyed but the wrongdoing people?"
وَمَا And not wamā We send nur'silu the Messengers l-mur'salīna except illā (as) bearer of glad tidings mubashirīna and (as) warners wamundhirīna So whoever faman believed āmana and reformed wa-aṣlaḥa then no falā fear khawfun upon them ʿalayhim and not walā they hum will grieve yaḥzanūna
And We send not the messengers except as bringers of good tidings and warners. So whoever believes and reforms - there will be no fear concerning them, nor will they grieve.
وَٱلَّذِينَ And those who wa-alladhīna denied kadhabū [in] Our Verses biāyātinā will touch them yamassuhumu the punishment l-ʿadhābu for what bimā they used to kānū defiantly disobey yafsuqūna
But those who deny Our verses - the punishment will touch1 them for their defiant disobedience.
قُل Say qul Not lā (do) I say aqūlu to you lakum (that) with me ʿindī (are the) treasures khazāinu (of) Allah l-lahi and not walā (that) I know aʿlamu the unseen l-ghayba and not walā I say aqūlu to you lakum that I (am) innī an Angel malakun Not in (do) I follow attabiʿu except illā what mā is revealed yūḥā to me ilayya Say qul Can hal be equal yastawī the blind l-aʿmā and the seeing one wal-baṣīru Then will not afalā you give thought tatafakkarūna
Say, [O Muḥammad], "I do not tell you that I have the depositories [containing the provision] of Allāh or that I know the unseen, nor do I tell you that I am an angel. I only follow what is revealed to me." Say, "Is the blind equivalent to the seeing? Then will you not give thought?"
وَأَنذِرْ And warn wa-andhir with it bihi those who alladhīna fear yakhāfūna that an they will be gathered yuḥ'sharū to ilā their Lord rabbihim not laysa for them lahum of min other than Him dūnihi any protector waliyyun and not walā any intercessor shafīʿun so that they may laʿallahum (become) righteous yattaqūna
And warn by it [i.e., the Qur’ān] those who fear that they will be gathered before their Lord - for them besides Him will be no protector and no intercessor - that they might become righteous.
وَلَا And (do) not walā send away taṭrudi those who alladhīna call yadʿūna their Lord rabbahum in the morning bil-ghadati and the evening wal-ʿashiyi desiring yurīdūna His Countenance wajhahu Not mā (is) on you ʿalayka of min their account ḥisābihim [of] min anything shayin and not wamā from min your account ḥisābika on them ʿalayhim [of] min anything shayin So were you to send them away fataṭrudahum then you would be fatakūna of mina the wrongdoers l-ẓālimīna
And do not send away those who call upon their Lord morning and afternoon, seeking His face [i.e., favor]. Not upon you is anything of their account and not upon them is anything of your account.1 So were you to send them away, you would [then] be of the wrongdoers.
وَكَذَٰلِكَ And thus wakadhālika We try fatannā some of them baʿḍahum with others bibaʿḍin that they say liyaqūlū Are these ahāulāi (whom has been) favored manna (by) Allah l-lahu [upon them] ʿalayhim from min among us bayninā is not alaysa Allah l-lahu most knowing bi-aʿlama of those who are grateful bil-shākirīna
And thus We have tried some of them through others that they [i.e., the disbelievers] might say, "Is it these whom Allāh has favored among us?" Is not Allāh most knowing of those who are grateful?1
وَإِذَا And when wa-idhā come to you jāaka those who alladhīna believe yu'minūna in Our Verses biāyātinā then say faqul Peace salāmun (be) upon you ʿalaykum (Has) Prescribed kataba your Lord rabbukum upon ʿalā Himself nafsihi the Mercy l-raḥmata that he annahu who man does ʿamila among you minkum evil sūan in ignorance bijahālatin then thumma repents tāba from min after it baʿdihi and reforms wa-aṣlaḥa then, indeed He fa-annahu (is) Oft-Forgiving ghafūrun Most Merciful raḥīmun
And when those come to you who believe in Our verses, say, "Peace be upon you. Your Lord has decreed upon Himself mercy: that any of you who does wrong out of ignorance and then repents after that and corrects himself - indeed, He is Forgiving and Merciful."
وَكَذَٰلِكَ And thus wakadhālika We explain nufaṣṣilu the Verses l-āyāti so that becomes manifest walitastabīna (the) way sabīlu (of) the criminals l-muj'rimīna
And thus do We detail the verses, and [thus] the way of the criminals will become evident.
قُلْ Say qul Indeed I innī [I] am forbidden nuhītu that an I worship aʿbuda those whom alladhīna you call tadʿūna from min besides dūni Allah l-lahi Say qul Not lā I follow attabiʿu your (vain) desires ahwāakum certainly qad I would go astray ḍalaltu then idhan and not wamā I (would be) anā from mina the guided-ones l-muh'tadīna
Say, "Indeed, I have been forbidden to worship those you invoke besides Allāh." Say, "I will not follow your desires, for I would then have gone astray, and I would not be of the [rightly] guided."
قُلْ Say qul Indeed, I (am) innī on ʿalā clear proof bayyinatin from min my Lord rabbī while you deny wakadhabtum [with] it bihi Not mā I have ʿindī what mā you seek to hasten tastaʿjilūna of it bihi Not ini (is) the decision l-ḥuk'mu except illā for Allah lillahi He relates yaquṣṣu the truth l-ḥaqa and He wahuwa (is the) best khayru (of) the Deciders l-fāṣilīna
Say, "Indeed, I am on clear evidence from my Lord, and you have denied it. I do not have that for which you are impatient.1 The decision is only for Allāh. He relates the truth, and He is the best of deciders."
قُل Say qul If law that anna (were) with me ʿindī what mā you seek to hasten tastaʿjilūna of it bihi surely would have been decided laquḍiya the matter l-amru between me baynī and between you wabaynakum And Allah wal-lahu (is) most knowing aʿlamu of the wrongdoers bil-ẓālimīna
Say, "If I had that for which you are impatient, the matter would have been decided between me and you, but Allāh is most knowing of the wrongdoers."
۞ وَعِندَهُۥ And with Him waʿindahu (are the) keys mafātiḥu (of) the unseen l-ghaybi no (one) lā knows them yaʿlamuhā except illā Him huwa And He knows wayaʿlamu what mā (is) in fī the land l-bari and in the sea wal-baḥri And not wamā falls tasquṭu of min any leaf waraqatin but illā He knows it yaʿlamuhā And not walā a grain ḥabbatin in fī the darkness[es] ẓulumāti (of) the earth l-arḍi and not walā moist raṭbin and not walā dry yābisin but illā (is) in fī a Record kitābin Clear mubīnin
And with Him are the keys of the unseen; none knows them except Him. And He knows what is on the land and in the sea. Not a leaf falls but that He knows it. And no grain is there within the darknesses of the earth and no moist or dry [thing] but that it is [written] in a clear record.
وَهُوَ And He wahuwa (is) the One Who alladhī takes your (soul) yatawaffākum by the night bi-al-layli and He knows wayaʿlamu what mā you committed jaraḥtum by the day bil-nahāri Then thumma He raises you up yabʿathukum therein fīhi so that is fulfilled liyuq'ḍā (the) term ajalun specified musamman Then thumma to Him ilayhi will be your return marjiʿukum then thumma He will inform you yunabbi-ukum about what bimā you used to kuntum do taʿmalūna
And it is He who takes your souls by night1 and knows what you have committed by day. Then He revives you therein [i.e., by day] that a specified term2 may be fulfilled. Then to Him will be your return; then He will inform you about what you used to do.
وَهُوَ And He wahuwa (is) the Subjugator l-qāhiru over fawqa His slaves ʿibādihi and He sends wayur'silu over you ʿalaykum guardians ḥafaẓatan until ḥattā when idhā comes jāa (to) anyone of you aḥadakumu the death l-mawtu take him tawaffathu Our messengers rusulunā and they wahum (do) not lā fail yufarriṭūna
And He is the subjugator over His servants, and He sends over you guardian-angels until, when death comes to one of you, Our messengers [i.e., angels of death] take him, and they do not fail [in their duties].
ثُمَّ Then thumma they are returned ruddū to ilā Allah l-lahi their Protector mawlāhumu [the] True l-ḥaqi Unquestionably alā for Him lahu (is) the judgment l-ḥuk'mu And He wahuwa (is) swiftest asraʿu (of) the Reckoners l-ḥāsibīna
Then they [i.e., His servants] are returned to Allāh, their true Lord. Unquestionably, His is the judgement, and He is the swiftest of accountants.
قُلْ Say qul Who man saves you yunajjīkum from min darkness[es] ẓulumāti (of) the land l-bari and the sea wal-baḥri you call Him tadʿūnahu humbly taḍarruʿan and secretly wakhuf'yatan If la-in He saves us anjānā from min this hādhihi surely we will be lanakūnanna from mina the grateful ones l-shākirīna
Say, "Who rescues you from the darknesses of the land and sea [when] you call upon Him imploring [aloud] and privately, 'If He should save us from this [crisis], we will surely be among the thankful.'"
قُلِ Say quli Allah l-lahu saves you yunajjīkum from it min'hā and from wamin every kulli distress karbin yet thumma you antum associate partners (with Allah) tush'rikūna
Say, "It is Allāh who saves you from it and from every distress; then you [still] associate others with Him."
قُلْ Say qul He huwa (is) All-Capable l-qādiru [on] ʿalā to an send yabʿatha upon you ʿalaykum punishment ʿadhāban from min above you fawqikum or aw from min beneath taḥti your feet arjulikum or aw (to) confuse you yalbisakum (into) sects shiyaʿan and make (you) taste wayudhīqa some of you baʿḍakum violence basa (of) others baʿḍin See unẓur how kayfa We explain nuṣarrifu the Signs l-āyāti so that they may laʿallahum understand yafqahūna
Say, "He is the [one] Able to send upon you affliction from above you or from beneath your feet or to confuse you [so you become] sects1 and make you taste the violence of one another." Look how We diversify the signs that they might understand.
وَكَذَّبَ But denied wakadhaba it bihi your people qawmuka while it wahuwa (is) the truth l-ḥaqu Say qul I am not lastu over you ʿalaykum a manager biwakīlin
But your people have denied it while it is the truth. Say, "I am not over you a manager [i.e., authority]."
لِّكُلِّ For every likulli news naba-in (is) a fixed time mus'taqarrun and soon wasawfa you will know taʿlamūna
For every news [i.e., happening] is a finality;1 and you are going to know.
وَإِذَا And when wa-idhā you see ra-ayta those who alladhīna engage (in vain talks) yakhūḍūna about fī Our Verses āyātinā then turn away fa-aʿriḍ from them ʿanhum until ḥattā they engage yakhūḍū in fī a talk ḥadīthin other than it ghayrihi And if wa-immā causes you to forget yunsiyannaka the Shaitaan l-shayṭānu then (do) not falā sit taqʿud after baʿda the reminder l-dhik'rā with maʿa the people l-qawmi the wrongdoers l-ẓālimīna
And when you see those who engage in [offensive] discourse1 concerning Our verses, then turn away from them until they enter into another conversation. And if Satan should cause you to forget, then do not remain after the reminder with the wrongdoing people.
وَمَا And not wamā (is) on ʿalā those who alladhīna fear (Allah) yattaqūna of min their account ḥisābihim [of] min anything shayin but walākin (for) reminder dhik'rā so that they may laʿallahum fear (Allah) yattaqūna
And those who fear Allāh are not held accountable for them [i.e., the disbelievers] at all, but [only for] a reminder - that perhaps they will fear Him.
وَذَرِ And leave wadhari those who alladhīna take ittakhadhū their religion dīnahum (as) a play laʿiban and amusement walahwan and deluded them wagharrathumu the life l-ḥayatu (of) the world l-dun'yā But remind wadhakkir with it bihi lest an is given up to destruction tub'sala a soul nafsun for what bimā it (has) earned kasabat not laysa (is) for it lahā from min besides dūni Allah l-lahi any protector waliyyun and not walā any intercessor shafīʿun And if wa-in it offers ransom taʿdil every kulla ransom ʿadlin not lā will it be taken yu'khadh from it min'hā Those ulāika (are) ones who alladhīna are given to destruction ub'silū for what bimā they earned kasabū For them lahum (will be) a drink sharābun of min boiling water ḥamīmin and a punishment waʿadhābun painful alīmun because bimā they used to kānū disbelieve yakfurūna
And leave those who take their religion as amusement and diversion and whom the worldly life has deluded. But remind with it [i.e., the Qur’ān], lest a soul be given up to destruction for what it earned; it will have other than Allāh no protector and no intercessor. And if it should offer every compensation, it would not be taken from it [i.e., that soul]. Those are the ones who are given to destruction for what they have earned. For them will be a drink of scalding water and a painful punishment because they used to disbelieve.
قُلْ Say qul Shall we call anadʿū from min besides dūni Allah l-lahi what mā not lā benefits us yanfaʿunā and not walā harms us yaḍurrunā and we turn back wanuraddu on ʿalā our heels aʿqābinā after baʿda [when] idh (has) guided us hadānā Allah l-lahu Like the one ka-alladhī whom (has been) enticed is'tahwathu (by) the Shaitaan l-shayāṭīnu in fī the earth l-arḍi confused ḥayrāna he has lahu companions aṣḥābun who call him yadʿūnahu towards ilā the guidance l-hudā 'Come to us.' i'tinā Say qul Indeed inna (the) Guidance hudā (of) Allah l-lahi it huwa (is) the Guidance l-hudā and we have been commanded wa-umir'nā that we submit linus'lima to (the) Lord lirabbi (of) the worlds l-ʿālamīna
Say, "Shall we invoke1 instead of Allāh that which neither benefits us nor harms us and be turned back on our heels after Allāh has guided us? [We would then be] like one whom the devils enticed [to wander] upon the earth confused, [while] he has companions inviting him to guidance, [calling], 'Come to us.'"2 Say, "Indeed, the guidance of Allāh is the [only] guidance; and we have been commanded to submit to the Lord of the worlds.
وَأَنْ And to wa-an establish aqīmū the prayer l-ṣalata and fear Him wa-ittaqūhu And He wahuwa (is) the One alladhī to Him ilayhi you will be gathered tuḥ'sharūna
And to establish prayer and fear Him." And it is He to whom you will be gathered.
وَهُوَ And (it is) He wahuwa Who alladhī created khalaqa the heavens l-samāwāti and the earth wal-arḍa in truth bil-ḥaqi And (the) Day wayawma He says yaqūlu Be kun and it is fayakūnu His word qawluhu (is) the truth l-ḥaqu And for Him walahu (is) the Dominion l-mul'ku (on the) Day yawma will be blown yunfakhu in fī the trumpet l-ṣūri (He is) All-Knower ʿālimu (of) the unseen l-ghaybi and the seen wal-shahādati And He wahuwa (is) the All-Wise l-ḥakīmu the All-Aware l-khabīru
And it is He who created the heavens and earth in truth. And the day [i.e., whenever] He says, "Be," and it is, His word is the truth.1 And His is the dominion [on] the Day the Horn is blown. [He is] Knower of the unseen2 and the witnessed;3 and He is the Wise, the Aware.
۞ وَإِذْ And when wa-idh said qāla Ibrahim ib'rāhīmu to his father li-abīhi Azar āzara Do you take atattakhidhu idols aṣnāman (as) gods ālihatan Indeed, I innī [I] see you arāka and your people waqawmaka in fī error ḍalālin manifest mubīnin
And [mention, O Muḥammad], when Abraham said to his father Āzar, "Do you take idols as deities? Indeed, I see you and your people to be in manifest error."
وَكَذَٰلِكَ And thus wakadhālika We show(ed) nurī Ibrahim ib'rāhīma the kingdom malakūta (of) the heavens l-samāwāti and the earth wal-arḍi so that he would be waliyakūna among mina the ones who are certain l-mūqinīna
And thus did We show Abraham the realm of the heavens and the earth that he would be among the certain [in faith].
فَلَمَّا So when falammā covered janna over him ʿalayhi the night al-laylu he saw raā a star kawkaban He said qāla This hādhā (is) my Lord rabbī But when falammā it set afala he said qāla Not lā (do) I like uḥibbu the ones that set l-āfilīna
So when the night covered him [with darkness], he saw a star. He said, "This is my lord."1 But when it set, he said, "I like not those that set [i.e., disappear]."
فَلَمَّا When falammā he saw raā the moon l-qamara rising bāzighan he said qāla This hādhā (is) my Lord rabbī But when falammā it set afala he said qāla If la-in (does) not lam guide me yahdinī my Lord rabbī I will surely be la-akūnanna among mina the people l-qawmi who went astray l-ḍālīna
And when he saw the moon rising, he said, "This is my lord." But when it set, he said, "Unless my Lord guides me, I will surely be among the people gone astray."
فَلَمَّا When falammā he saw raā the sun l-shamsa rising bāzighatan he said qāla This (is) hādhā my Lord rabbī this (is) hādhā greater akbaru But when falammā it set afalat he said qāla O my people yāqawmi Indeed, I am innī free barīon of what mimmā you associate (with Allah) tush'rikūna
And when he saw the sun rising, he said, "This is my lord; this is greater." But when it set, he said, "O my people, indeed I am free from what you associate with Allāh.
إِنِّى Indeed, I innī [I] have turned wajjahtu my face wajhiya to the One Who lilladhī created faṭara the heavens l-samāwāti and the earth wal-arḍa (as) a true monotheist ḥanīfan and not wamā I (am) anā of mina the polytheists l-mush'rikīna
Indeed, I have turned my face [i.e., self] toward He who created the heavens and the earth, inclining toward truth, and I am not of those who associate others with Allāh."
وَحَآجَّهُۥ And argued with him waḥājjahu his people qawmuhu He said qāla Do you argue with me atuḥājjūnnī concerning fī Allah l-lahi while certainly waqad He has guided me hadāni And not walā (do) I fear akhāfu what mā you associate tush'rikūna with Him bihi unless illā [that] an wills yashāa my Lord rabbī anything shayan Encompasses wasiʿa my Lord rabbī every kulla thing shayin (in) knowledge ʿil'man Then will not afalā you take heed tatadhakkarūna
And his people argued with him. He said, "Do you argue with me concerning Allāh while He has guided me? And I fear not what you associate with Him [and will not be harmed] unless my Lord should will something. My Lord encompasses all things in knowledge; then will you not remember?
وَكَيْفَ And how wakayfa could I fear akhāfu what mā you associate (with Allah) ashraktum while not walā you fear takhāfūna that you annakum have associated ashraktum with Allah bil-lahi what mā not lam did He send down yunazzil for it bihi to you ʿalaykum any authority sul'ṭānan So which fa-ayyu (of) the two parties l-farīqayni has more right aḥaqqu to security bil-amni if in you kuntum know taʿlamūna
And how should I fear what you associate while you do not fear that you have associated with Allāh that for which He has not sent down to you any authority? So which of the two parties has more right to security, if you should know?"
ٱلَّذِينَ Those who alladhīna believed āmanū and (did) not walam mix yalbisū their belief īmānahum with wrong biẓul'min those ulāika for them lahumu (is) the security l-amnu and they wahum (are) rightly guided muh'tadūna
They who believe and do not mix their belief with injustice1 - those will have security, and they are [rightly] guided.
وَتِلْكَ And this watil'ka (is) Our argument ḥujjatunā We gave it ātaynāhā (to) Ibrahim ib'rāhīma against ʿalā his people qawmihi We raise narfaʿu (by) degrees darajātin whom man We will nashāu Indeed inna your Lord rabbaka (is) All-Wise ḥakīmun All-Knowing ʿalīmun
And that was Our [conclusive] argument which We gave Abraham against his people. We raise by degrees whom We will. Indeed, your Lord is Wise and Knowing.
وَوَهَبْنَا And We bestowed wawahabnā to him lahu Isaac is'ḥāqa and Yaqub wayaʿqūba all kullan We guided hadaynā And Nuh wanūḥan We guided hadaynā from min before qablu and of wamin his descendents dhurriyyatihi Dawood dāwūda and Sulaiman wasulaymāna and Ayyub wa-ayyūba and Yusuf wayūsufa and Musa wamūsā and Harun wahārūna And thus wakadhālika We reward najzī the good-doers l-muḥ'sinīna
And We gave to him [i.e., Abraham] Isaac and Jacob - all [of them] We guided. And Noah, We guided before; and among his descendants, David and Solomon and Job and Joseph and Moses and Aaron. Thus do We reward the doers of good.
وَزَكَرِيَّا And Zakariya wazakariyyā and Yahya wayaḥyā and Isa waʿīsā and Elijah wa-il'yāsa all (were) kullun of mina the righteous l-ṣāliḥīna
And Zechariah and John and Jesus and Elias - and all were of the righteous.
وَإِسْمَـٰعِيلَ And Ishmael wa-is'māʿīla and Elisha wal-yasaʿa and Yunus wayūnusa and Lut walūṭan and all wakullan We preferred faḍḍalnā over ʿalā the worlds l-ʿālamīna
And Ishmael and Elisha and Jonah and Lot - and all [of them] We preferred over the worlds.
وَمِنْ And from wamin their fathers ābāihim and their descendents wadhurriyyātihim and their brothers wa-ikh'wānihim and We chose them wa-ij'tabaynāhum and We guided them wahadaynāhum to ilā a path ṣirāṭin straight mus'taqīmin
And [some] among their fathers and their descendants and their brothers - and We chose them and We guided them to a straight path.
ذَٰلِكَ That dhālika (is the) Guidance hudā (of) Allah l-lahi He guides yahdī with it bihi whom man He wills yashāu of min His slaves ʿibādihi But if walaw they (had) associated partners (with Allah) ashrakū surely (would be) worthless laḥabiṭa for them ʿanhum what mā they used to kānū do yaʿmalūna
That is the guidance of Allāh by which He guides whomever He wills of His servants. But if they had associated others with Allāh, then worthless for them would be whatever they were doing.
أُو۟لَـٰٓئِكَ Those ulāika (are) ones whom alladhīna We gave them ātaynāhumu the Book l-kitāba and the judgment wal-ḥuk'ma and the Prophethood wal-nubuwata But if fa-in disbelieve yakfur in it bihā these hāulāi then indeed faqad We have entrusted wakkalnā it bihā (to) a people qawman who are not laysū therein bihā disbelievers bikāfirīna
Those are the ones to whom We gave the Scripture and authority and prophethood. But if they [i.e., the disbelievers] deny it, then We have entrusted it to a people who are not therein disbelievers.
أُو۟لَـٰٓئِكَ Those ulāika (are) ones whom alladhīna (have been) guided hadā (by) Allah l-lahu so of their guidance fabihudāhumu you follow iq'tadih Say qul Not lā I ask you asalukum for it ʿalayhi any reward ajran Not in (is) it huwa but illā a reminder dhik'rā for the worlds lil'ʿālamīna
Those are the ones whom Allāh has guided, so from their guidance take an example. Say, "I ask of you for it [i.e., this message] no payment. It is not but a reminder for the worlds."
وَمَا And not wamā they appraised qadarū Allah l-laha (with) true ḥaqqa [of his] appraisal qadrihi when idh they said qālū Not mā revealed anzala (by) Allah l-lahu on ʿalā a human being basharin [of] min anything shayin Say qul Who man revealed anzala the Book l-kitāba which alladhī brought jāa [it] bihi Musa mūsā (as) a light nūran and guidance wahudan for the people lilnnāsi You make it tajʿalūnahu (into) parchments qarāṭīsa you disclose (some of) it tub'dūnahā and you conceal watukh'fūna much (of it) kathīran And you were taught waʿullim'tum what mā not lam knew taʿlamū you antum and not walā your forefathers ābāukum Say quli Allah (revealed it) l-lahu Then thumma leave them dharhum in fī their discourse khawḍihim playing yalʿabūna
And they did not appraise Allāh with true appraisal1 when they said, "Allāh did not reveal to a human being anything." Say, "Who revealed the Scripture that Moses brought as light and guidance to the people? You [Jews] make it into pages, disclosing [some of] it and concealing much. And you2 were taught that which you knew not - neither you nor your fathers." Say, "Allāh [revealed it]." Then leave them in their [empty] discourse, amusing themselves.
وَهَـٰذَا And this wahādhā (is) a Book kitābun We have revealed it anzalnāhu blessed mubārakun confirming muṣaddiqu which alladhī (came) before bayna its hands yadayhi so that you may warn walitundhira (the) mother umma (of) the cities l-qurā and who waman (are) around it ḥawlahā And those who wa-alladhīna believe yu'minūna in the Hereafter bil-ākhirati they believe yu'minūna in it bihi and they wahum over ʿalā their prayers ṣalātihim (are) guarding yuḥāfiẓūna
And this is a Book which We have sent down, blessed and confirming what was before it, that you may warn the Mother of Cities [i.e., Makkah] and those around it.1 Those who believe in the Hereafter believe in it, and they are maintaining their prayers.
وَمَنْ And who waman (is) more unjust aẓlamu than (one) who mimmani invents if'tarā about ʿalā Allah l-lahi a lie kadhiban or aw said qāla It has been inspired ūḥiya to me ilayya while not walam it was inspired yūḥa to him ilayhi anything shayon and (one) who waman said qāla I will reveal sa-unzilu like mith'la what mā (has been) revealed anzala (by) Allah l-lahu And if walaw you (could) see tarā when idhi the wrongdoers l-ẓālimūna (are) in fī agonies ghamarāti (of) [the] death l-mawti while the Angels wal-malāikatu (are) stretching out bāsiṭū their hands (saying) aydīhim Discharge akhrijū your souls anfusakumu Today l-yawma you will be recompensed tuj'zawna (with) punishment ʿadhāba humiliating l-hūni because bimā you used to kuntum say taqūlūna against ʿalā Allah l-lahi other than ghayra the truth l-ḥaqi and you were wakuntum towards ʿan His Verses āyātihi being arrogant tastakbirūna
And who is more unjust than one who invents a lie about Allāh or says, "It has been inspired to me," while nothing has been inspired to him, and one who says, "I will reveal [something] like what Allāh revealed." And if you could but see when the wrongdoers are in the overwhelming pangs of death while the angels extend their hands,1 [saying], "Discharge your souls! Today you will be awarded the punishment of [extreme] humiliation for what you used to say against Allāh other than the truth and [that] you were, toward His verses, being arrogant."
وَلَقَدْ And certainly walaqad you have come to Us ji'tumūnā alone furādā as kamā We created you khalaqnākum (the) first awwala time marratin and you have left wataraktum whatever mā We bestowed (on) you khawwalnākum behind warāa your backs ẓuhūrikum And not wamā We see narā with you maʿakum your intercessors shufaʿāakumu those whom alladhīna you claimed zaʿamtum that they (were) annahum in your (matters) fīkum partners (with Allah) shurakāu Indeed laqad have been severed (bonds) taqaṭṭaʿa between you baynakum and is lost waḍalla from you ʿankum what mā you used to kuntum claim tazʿumūna
[It will be said to them], "And you have certainly come to Us alone [i.e., individually] as We created you the first time, and you have left whatever We bestowed upon you behind you. And We do not see with you your 'intercessors' which you claimed that they were among you associates [of Allāh]. It has [all] been severed between you,1 and lost from you is what you used to claim."
۞ إِنَّ Indeed inna Allah l-laha (is the) Cleaver fāliqu (of) the grain l-ḥabi and the date-seed wal-nawā He brings forth yukh'riju the living l-ḥaya from mina the dead l-mayiti and brings forth wamukh'riju the dead l-mayiti from mina the living l-ḥayi That dhālikumu (is) Allah l-lahu so how fa-annā are you deluded tu'fakūna
Indeed, Allāh is the cleaver of grain and date seeds.1 He brings the living out of the dead and brings the dead out of the living. That is Allāh; so how are you deluded?
فَالِقُ (He is the) Cleaver fāliqu (of) the daybreak l-iṣ'bāḥi and He has made wajaʿala the night al-layla (for) rest sakanan and the sun wal-shamsa and the moon wal-qamara (for) reckoning ḥus'bānan That dhālika (is the) ordaining taqdīru (of) the All-Mighty l-ʿazīzi the All-Knowing l-ʿalīmi
[He is] the cleaver of daybreak and has made the night for rest and the sun and moon for calculation.1 That is the determination of the Exalted in Might, the Knowing.
وَهُوَ And He wahuwa (is) the One Who alladhī made jaʿala for you lakumu the stars l-nujūma that you may guide yourselves litahtadū with them bihā in fī the darkness[es] ẓulumāti (of) the land l-bari and the sea wal-baḥri Certainly qad We have made clear faṣṣalnā the Signs l-āyāti for a people liqawmin (who) know yaʿlamūna
And it is He who placed for you the stars that you may be guided by them through the darknesses of the land and sea. We have detailed the signs for a people who know.
وَهُوَ And He wahuwa (is) the One Who alladhī (has) produced you ansha-akum from min a soul nafsin single wāḥidatin so (there is) a place of dwelling famus'taqarrun and a resting place wamus'tawdaʿun Certainly qad We have made clear faṣṣalnā the Signs l-āyāti for a people liqawmin (who) understand yafqahūna
And it is He who produced you from one soul and [gave you] a place of dwelling and of storage.1 We have detailed the signs for a people who understand.
وَهُوَ And He wahuwa (is) the One Who alladhī sends down anzala from mina the sky l-samāi water māan then We bring forth fa-akhrajnā with it bihi vegetation nabāta (of) every kulli thing shayin Then We bring forth fa-akhrajnā from it min'hu green plant khaḍiran We bring forth nukh'riju from it min'hu grain ḥabban thick clustered mutarākiban And from wamina the date-palm l-nakhli from min its spathe ṭalʿihā clusters of dates qin'wānun hanging low dāniyatun And gardens wajannātin of min grapes aʿnābin and the olives wal-zaytūna and the pomegranates wal-rumāna resembling mush'tabihan and not waghayra resembling mutashābihin Look unẓurū at ilā its fruit thamarihi when idhā it bears fruit athmara and its ripening wayanʿihi Indeed inna in fī that dhālikum (are) signs laāyātin for a people liqawmin (who) believe yu'minūna
And it is He who sends down rain from the sky, and We produce thereby the growth of all things. We produce from it greenery from which We produce grains arranged in layers. And from the palm trees - of its emerging fruit are clusters hanging low. And [We produce] gardens of grapevines and olives and pomegranates, similar yet varied. Look at [each of] its fruit when it yields and [at] its ripening. Indeed in that are signs for a people who believe.
وَجَعَلُوا۟ And they make wajaʿalū with Allah lillahi partners shurakāa jinn l-jina though He has created them wakhalaqahum and they falsely attribute wakharaqū to Him lahu sons banīna and daughters wabanātin without bighayri knowledge ʿil'min Glorified is He sub'ḥānahu and Exalted wataʿālā above what ʿammā they attribute yaṣifūna
But they have attributed to Allāh partners - the jinn, while He has created them - and have fabricated for Him sons and daughters without knowledge. Exalted is He and high above what they describe.
بَدِيعُ Originator badīʿu (of) the heavens l-samāwāti and the earth wal-arḍi How annā can be yakūnu for Him lahu a son waladun while not walam (there) is takun for Him lahu a companion ṣāḥibatun and He created wakhalaqa every kulla thing shayin And He wahuwa (is) of every bikulli thing shayin All-Knower ʿalīmun
[He is] Originator of the heavens and the earth. How could He have a son when He does not have a companion [i.e., wife] and He created all things? And He is, of all things, Knowing.
ذَٰلِكُمُ That dhālikumu (is) Allah l-lahu your Lord rabbukum (there is) no lā god ilāha except illā Him huwa (the) Creator khāliqu (of) every kulli thing shayin so worship Him fa-uʿ'budūhu And He wahuwa (is) on ʿalā every kulli thing shayin a Guardian wakīlun
That is Allāh, your Lord; there is no deity except Him, the Creator of all things, so worship Him. And He is Disposer of all things.
لَّا Not (can) lā grasp Him tud'rikuhu the visions l-abṣāru but He wahuwa (can) grasp yud'riku (all) the vision l-abṣāra and He (is) wahuwa the All-Subtle l-laṭīfu the All-Aware l-khabīru
Vision perceives Him not,1 but He perceives [all] vision; and He is the Subtle,2 the Aware.3
قَدْ Verily qad has come to you jāakum enlightenment baṣāiru from min your Lord rabbikum Then whoever faman sees abṣara then (it is) for his soul falinafsihi and whoever waman (is) blind ʿamiya then (it is) against himself faʿalayhā And not wamā (am) I anā over you ʿalaykum a guardian biḥafīẓin
There has come to you enlightenment from your Lord. So whoever will see does so for [the benefit of] his soul, and whoever is blind [does harm] against it. And [say], "I am not a guardian over you."1
وَكَذَٰلِكَ And thus wakadhālika We explain nuṣarrifu the Signs l-āyāti that they (may) say waliyaqūlū You have studied darasta and that We (may) make it clear walinubayyinahu for a people liqawmin who know yaʿlamūna
And thus do We diversify the verses so they [i.e., the disbelievers] will say, "You have studied,"1 and so We may make it [i.e., the Qur’ān] clear for a people who know.
ٱتَّبِعْ Follow ittabiʿ what mā has been inspired ūḥiya to you ilayka from min your Lord rabbika (there is) no lā god ilāha except illā Him huwa and turn away wa-aʿriḍ from ʿani the polytheists l-mush'rikīna
Follow, [O Muḥammad], what has been revealed to you from your Lord - there is no deity except Him - and turn away from those who associate others with Allāh.
وَلَوْ And if walaw (had) willed shāa Allah l-lahu not (they would have) mā associated partners (with Him) ashrakū And not wamā We have made you jaʿalnāka over them ʿalayhim a guardian ḥafīẓan and not wamā you anta (are) over them ʿalayhim a manager biwakīlin
But if Allāh had willed, they would not have associated. And We have not appointed you over them as a guardian, nor are you a manager over them.1
وَلَا And (do) not walā insult tasubbū those whom alladhīna they invoke yadʿūna from min other than dūni Allah l-lahi lest they insult fayasubbū Allah l-laha (in) enmity ʿadwan without bighayri knowledge ʿil'min Thus kadhālika We have made fair-seeming zayyannā to every likulli community ummatin their deed ʿamalahum Then thumma to ilā their Lord rabbihim (is) their return marjiʿuhum then He will inform them fayunabbi-uhum about what bimā they used to kānū do yaʿmalūna
And do not insult those they invoke other than Allāh, lest they insult Allāh in enmity without knowledge. Thus We have made pleasing to every community their deeds. Then to their Lord is their return, and He will inform them about what they used to do.
وَأَقْسَمُوا۟ And they swear wa-aqsamū by Allah bil-lahi strongest jahda (of) their oaths aymānihim that if la-in came to them jāathum a sign āyatun they would surely believe layu'minunna in it bihā Say qul Only innamā the signs l-āyātu (are) with ʿinda Allah l-lahi And what wamā will make you perceive yush'ʿirukum that [it] annahā when idhā it comes jāat not lā they will believe yu'minūna
And they swear by Allāh their strongest oaths that if a sign came to them, they would surely believe in it. Say, "The signs are only with [i.e., from] Allāh." And what will make you perceive that even if it [i.e., a sign] came, they would not believe.
وَنُقَلِّبُ And We will turn wanuqallibu their hearts afidatahum and their sights wa-abṣārahum (just) as kamā not lam they believe yu'minū in it bihi (the) first awwala time marratin And We will leave them wanadharuhum in fī their transgression ṭugh'yānihim wandering blindly yaʿmahūna
And We will turn away their hearts and their eyes just as they refused to believe in it [i.e., the revelation] the first time. And We will leave them in their transgression, wandering blindly.
۞ وَلَوْ And (even) if walaw [that] We (had) annanā [We] sent down nazzalnā to them ilayhimu the Angels l-malāikata and spoken to them wakallamahumu the dead l-mawtā and We gathered waḥasharnā before them ʿalayhim every kulla thing shayin face to face qubulan not mā they were kānū to believe liyu'minū unless illā [that] an wills yashāa Allah l-lahu But walākinna most of them aktharahum (are) ignorant yajhalūna
And even if We had sent down to them the angels [with the message] and the dead spoke to them [of it] and We gathered together every [created] thing in front of them, they would not believe unless Allāh should will. But most of them, [of that], are ignorant.
وَكَذَٰلِكَ And thus wakadhālika We made jaʿalnā for every likulli Prophet nabiyyin an enemy ʿaduwwan devils shayāṭīna (from) the mankind l-insi and the jinn wal-jini inspiring yūḥī some of them baʿḍuhum to ilā others baʿḍin (with) decorative zukh'rufa [the] speech l-qawli (in) deception ghurūran But if walaw (had) willed shāa your Lord rabbuka not mā they (would) have done it faʿalūhu so leave them fadharhum and what wamā they invent yaftarūna
And thus We have made for every prophet an enemy - devils from mankind and jinn, inspiring to one another decorative speech in delusion. But if your Lord had willed, they would not have done it, so leave them and that which they invent.
وَلِتَصْغَىٰٓ And so that incline walitaṣghā to it ilayhi hearts afidatu (of) those who alladhīna (do) not lā believe yu'minūna in the Hereafter bil-ākhirati and so that they may be pleased with it waliyarḍawhu and so that they may commit waliyaqtarifū what mā they hum (are) committing muq'tarifūna
And [it is] so the hearts of those who disbelieve in the Hereafter will incline toward it [i.e., deceptive speech] and that they will be satisfied with it and that they will commit that which they are committing.
أَفَغَيْرَ Then is (it) other than afaghayra Allah l-lahi I seek abtaghī (as) judge ḥakaman while He wahuwa (is) the One Who alladhī has revealed anzala to you ilaykumu the Book l-kitāba explained in detail mufaṣṣalan And those (to) whom wa-alladhīna We gave them ātaynāhumu the Book l-kitāba they know yaʿlamūna that it annahu (is) sent down munazzalun from min your Lord rabbika in truth bil-ḥaqi so (do) not falā be takūnanna among mina the ones who doubt l-mum'tarīna
[Say], "Then is it other than Allāh I should seek as judge while it is He who has revealed to you the Book [i.e., the Qur’ān] explained in detail?" And those to whom We [previously] gave the Scripture know that it is sent down from your Lord in truth, so never be among the doubters.
وَتَمَّتْ And (has been) fulfilled watammat (the) word kalimatu (of) your Lord rabbika (in) truth ṣid'qan and justice waʿadlan No lā one can change mubaddila His words likalimātihi and He wahuwa (is) the All-Hearer l-samīʿu the All-Knower l-ʿalīmu
And the word of your Lord has been fulfilled in truth and in justice. None can alter His words, and He is the Hearing, the Knowing.
وَإِن And if wa-in you obey tuṭiʿ most akthara of man (those) in fī the earth l-arḍi they will mislead you yuḍillūka from ʿan (the) way sabīli (of) Allah l-lahi Not in they follow yattabiʿūna except illā [the] assumption l-ẓana and not wa-in they (do) hum except illā guess yakhruṣūna
And if you obey most of those upon the earth, they will mislead you from the way of Allāh. They follow not except assumption, and they are not but misjudging.1
إِنَّ Indeed inna your Lord rabbaka He huwa knows best aʿlamu who man strays yaḍillu from ʿan His way sabīlihi and He wahuwa (is) most knowing aʿlamu of the guided-ones bil-muh'tadīna
Indeed, your Lord is most knowing of who strays from His way, and He is most knowing of the [rightly] guided.
فَكُلُوا۟ So eat fakulū of what mimmā (is) mentioned dhukira (the) name us'mu (of) Allah l-lahi on it ʿalayhi if in you are kuntum in His Verses biāyātihi believers mu'minīna
So eat of that [meat] upon which the name of Allāh has been mentioned,1 if you are believers in His verses [i.e., revealed law].
وَمَا And what wamā for you lakum that not allā you eat takulū of what mimmā has been mentioned dhukira (the) name us'mu (of) Allah l-lahi on it ʿalayhi when indeed waqad He (has) explained in detail faṣṣala to you lakum what mā He (has) forbidden ḥarrama to you ʿalaykum except illā what mā you are compelled uḍ'ṭurir'tum to it ilayhi And indeed wa-inna many kathīran surely lead astray layuḍillūna by their (vain) desires bi-ahwāihim without bighayri knowledge ʿil'min Indeed inna your Lord rabbaka He huwa (is) most knowing aʿlamu of the transgressors bil-muʿ'tadīna
And why should you not eat of that upon which the name of Allāh has been mentioned while He has explained in detail to you what He has forbidden you, excepting that to which you are compelled.1 And indeed do many lead [others] astray through their [own] inclinations without knowledge. Indeed, your Lord - He is most knowing of the transgressors.
وَذَرُوا۟ Forsake wadharū open ẓāhira [the] sins l-ith'mi and the secret wabāṭinahu Indeed inna those who alladhīna earn yaksibūna [the] sin l-ith'ma they will be recompensed sayuj'zawna for what bimā they used to kānū commit yaqtarifūna
And leave [i.e., desist from] what is apparent of sin and what is concealed thereof. Indeed, those who earn [blame for] sin will be recompensed for that which they used to commit.
وَلَا And (do) not walā eat takulū of that mimmā not lam has been mentioned yudh'kari (the) name us'mu (of) Allah l-lahi on it ʿalayhi and indeed, it (is) wa-innahu grave disobedience lafis'qun And indeed wa-inna the devils l-shayāṭīna inspire layūḥūna to ilā their friends awliyāihim so that they dispute with you liyujādilūkum and if wa-in you obey them aṭaʿtumūhum indeed, you innakum (would) be the polytheists lamush'rikūna
And do not eat of that upon which the name of Allāh has not been mentioned, for indeed, it is grave disobedience. And indeed do the devils inspire their allies [among men] to dispute with you. And if you were to obey them, indeed, you would be associators [of others with Him].1
أَوَمَن Is (one) who awaman was kāna dead maytan and We gave him life fa-aḥyaynāhu and We made wajaʿalnā for him lahu light nūran he walks yamshī whereby bihi among fī the people l-nāsi like (one) who kaman [similar to him] mathaluhu (is) in fī the darknesses l-ẓulumāti not laysa he comes out bikhārijin of it min'hā Thus kadhālika is made fair-seeming zuyyina to the disbelievers lil'kāfirīna what mā they were kānū doing yaʿmalūna
And is one who was dead and We gave him life and made for him light by which to walk among the people like one who is in darkness, never to emerge therefrom? Thus it has been made pleasing to the disbelievers that which they were doing.
وَكَذَٰلِكَ And thus wakadhālika We placed jaʿalnā in fī every kulli city qaryatin greatest akābira (of) its criminals muj'rimīhā so that they plot liyamkurū therein fīhā And not wamā they plot yamkurūna except illā against themselves bi-anfusihim and not wamā they perceive yashʿurūna
And thus We have placed within every city the greatest of its criminals to conspire therein. But they conspire not except against themselves, and they perceive [it] not.
وَإِذَا And when wa-idhā comes to them jāathum a Sign āyatun they say qālū Never lan we will believe nu'mina until ḥattā we are given nu'tā like mith'la what mā was given ūtiya (to the) Messengers rusulu (of) Allah l-lahi Allah l-lahu knows best aʿlamu where ḥaythu He places yajʿalu His Message risālatahu Will afflict sayuṣību those who alladhīna committed crimes ajramū a humiliation ṣaghārun from ʿinda Allah l-lahi and a punishment waʿadhābun severe shadīdun for what bimā they used to kānū plot yamkurūna
And when a sign comes to them, they say, "Never will we believe until we are given like that which was given to the messengers of Allāh." Allāh is most knowing of where [i.e., with whom] He places His message. There will afflict those who committed crimes debasement before Allāh and severe punishment for what they used to conspire.
فَمَن So whoever faman wants yuridi Allah l-lahu that an He guides him yahdiyahu He expands yashraḥ his breast ṣadrahu to Islam lil'is'lāmi and whoever waman He wants yurid that an He lets him go astray yuḍillahu He makes yajʿal his breast ṣadrahu tight ḍayyiqan and constricted ḥarajan as though ka-annamā he (were) climbing yaṣṣaʿʿadu into fī the sky l-samāi Thus kadhālika places yajʿalu Allah l-lahu the filth l-rij'sa on ʿalā those who alladhīna (do) not lā believe yu'minūna
So whoever Allāh wants to guide - He expands his breast to [contain] Islām; and whoever He wants to send astray1 - He makes his breast tight and constricted as though he were climbing into the sky. Thus does Allāh place defilement upon those who do not believe.
وَهَـٰذَا And this wahādhā (is the) way ṣirāṭu (of) your Lord rabbika straight mus'taqīman Certainly qad We have detailed faṣṣalnā the Verses l-āyāti for a people liqawmin who take heed yadhakkarūna
And this is the path of your Lord, [leading] straight. We have detailed the verses for a people who remember.
۞ لَهُمْ For them lahum (will be) home dāru (of) [the] peace l-salāmi with ʿinda their Lord rabbihim And He wahuwa (will be) their protecting friend waliyyuhum because bimā (of what) they used to kānū do yaʿmalūna
For them will be the Home of Peace [i.e., Paradise] with their Lord. And He will be their protecting friend because of what they used to do.
وَيَوْمَ And (the) Day wayawma He will gather them yaḥshuruhum all jamīʿan (and will say), "O assembly yāmaʿshara (of) [the] jinn l-jini Certainly qadi you have (misled) many is'takthartum of mina the mankind l-insi And will say waqāla their friends awliyāuhum among mina the men l-insi Our Lord rabbanā profited is'tamtaʿa some of us baʿḍunā by others bibaʿḍin and we have reached wabalaghnā our term ajalanā which alladhī You appointed ajjalta for us lanā He will say qāla The Fire l-nāru (is) your abode mathwākum will abide forever khālidīna in it fīhā except illā (for) what mā wills shāa Allah l-lahu Indeed inna your Lord rabbaka (is) All-Wise ḥakīmun All-Knowing ʿalīmun
And [mention, O Muḥammad], the Day when He will gather them together [and say], "O company of jinn, you have [misled] many of mankind." And their allies among mankind will say, "Our Lord, some of us made use of others, and we have [now] reached our term which You appointed for us." He will say, "The Fire is your residence, wherein you will abide eternally, except for what Allāh wills. Indeed, your Lord is Wise and Knowing."
وَكَذَٰلِكَ And thus wakadhālika We make friends nuwallī some (of) baʿḍa the wrongdoers l-ẓālimīna (to) others baʿḍan for what bimā they used to kānū earn yaksibūna
And thus will We make some of the wrongdoers allies of others for what they used to earn.1
يَـٰمَعْشَرَ O assembly yāmaʿshara (of) [the] jinn l-jini and [the] men wal-insi Did (there) not alam come to you yatikum Messengers rusulun from (among) you minkum relating yaquṣṣūna to you ʿalaykum My Verses āyātī and warning you wayundhirūnakum (of the) meeting liqāa (of) your day yawmikum this hādhā They will say qālū We bear witness shahid'nā against ʿalā ourselves anfusinā And deluded them wagharrathumu the life l-ḥayatu (of) the world l-dun'yā and they will bear witness washahidū against ʿalā themselves anfusihim that they annahum were kānū disbelievers kāfirīna
"O company of jinn and mankind,1 did there not come to you messengers from among you, relating to you My verses and warning you of the meeting of this Day of yours?" They will say, "We bear witness against ourselves"; and the worldly life had deluded them, and they will bear witness against themselves that they were disbelievers.
ذَٰلِكَ That (is because) dhālika [that] an not lam is yakun your Lord rabbuka one who destroys muh'lika the cities l-qurā for (their) wrongdoing biẓul'min while their people wa-ahluhā (are) unaware ghāfilūna
That is because your Lord would not destroy the cities for wrongdoing1 while their people were unaware.
وَلِكُلٍّۢ And for all walikullin (will be) degrees darajātun for what mimmā they did ʿamilū And not wamā (is) your Lord rabbuka unaware bighāfilin about what ʿammā they do yaʿmalūna
And for all are degrees [i.e., positions resulting] from what they have done. And your Lord is not unaware of what they do.
وَرَبُّكَ And your Lord warabbuka (is) the Self-Sufficient l-ghaniyu (the) Possessor dhū (of) mercy l-raḥmati If in He wills yasha He can take you away yudh'hib'kum and grant succession wayastakhlif from min after you baʿdikum (to) whom mā He wills yashāu as kamā He raised you ansha-akum from min the descendants dhurriyyati (of) people qawmin other ākharīna
And your Lord is the Free of need, the possessor of mercy. If He wills, He can do away with you and give succession after you to whomever He wills, just as He produced you from the descendants of another people.
إِنَّ Indeed inna what mā you are promised tūʿadūna (is) sure to come laātin And not wamā (can) you antum escape (it) bimuʿ'jizīna
Indeed, what you are promised is coming, and you will not cause failure [to Allāh].1
قُلْ Say qul O my people yāqawmi Work iʿ'malū on ʿalā your position makānatikum Indeed, I am innī a worker ʿāmilun And soon fasawfa you will know taʿlamūna who man will have takūnu for himself lahu (in) the end ʿāqibatu (a good) home l-dāri Indeed [he] innahu (will) not lā succeed yuf'liḥu the wrongdoers l-ẓālimūna
Say, "O my people, work according to your position; [for] indeed, I am working. And you are going to know who will have succession in the home.1 Indeed, the wrongdoers will not succeed."
وَجَعَلُوا۟ And they assign wajaʿalū to Allah lillahi out of what mimmā He produced dhara-a of mina the crops l-ḥarthi and the cattle wal-anʿāmi a share naṣīban and they say faqālū This hādhā (is) for Allah lillahi by their claim bizaʿmihim And this wahādhā (is) for our partners lishurakāinā But what famā is kāna for their partners lishurakāihim (does) not falā reach yaṣilu [to] ilā Allah l-lahi while what wamā is kāna for Allah lillahi then it fahuwa reaches yaṣilu [to] ilā their partners shurakāihim Evil sāa (is) what mā they judge yaḥkumūna
And they [i.e., the polytheists] assign to Allāh from that which He created of crops and livestock a share and say, "This is for Allāh," by their claim, "and this is for our 'partners' [associated with Him]." But what is for their "partners" does not reach Allāh, while what is for Allāh - this reaches their "partners." Evil is that which they rule.
وَكَذَٰلِكَ And likewise wakadhālika made pleasing zayyana to many likathīrin of mina the polytheists l-mush'rikīna (the) killing qatla (of) their children awlādihim their partners shurakāuhum so that they may ruin them liyur'dūhum and that they make confusing waliyalbisū to them ʿalayhim their religion dīnahum And if walaw (had) willed shāa Allah l-lahu not mā (would) they have done so faʿalūhu So leave them fadharhum and what wamā they invent yaftarūna
And likewise, to many of the polytheists their partners1 have made [to seem] pleasing the killing of their children in order to bring about their destruction and to cover them with confusion in their religion. And if Allāh had willed, they would not have done so. So leave them and that which they invent.
وَقَالُوا۟ And they say waqālū These hādhihi (are) cattle anʿāmun and crops waḥarthun forbidden ḥij'run no (one) lā can eat them yaṭʿamuhā except illā whom man we will nashāu by their claim bizaʿmihim And cattle wa-anʿāmun forbidden ḥurrimat (are) their backs ẓuhūruhā and cattle wa-anʿāmun not lā they mention yadhkurūna (the) name is'ma (of) Allah l-lahi on it ʿalayhā (as) an invention if'tirāan against Him ʿalayhi He will recompense them sayajzīhim for what bimā they used to kānū invent yaftarūna
And they say, "These animals1 and crops are forbidden; no one may eat from them except whom we will," by their claim. And there are those [camels] whose backs are forbidden [by them]2 and those upon which the name of Allāh is not mentioned3 - [all of this] an invention of untruth about Him.4 He will punish them for what they were inventing.
وَقَالُوا۟ And they say waqālū What mā (is) in fī (the) wombs buṭūni (of) these hādhihi cattle l-anʿāmi (is) exclusively khāliṣatun for our males lidhukūrinā and forbidden wamuḥarramun on ʿalā our spouses azwājinā But if wa-in is yakun (born) dead maytatan then they (all) fahum in it fīhi (are) partners shurakāu He will recompense them sayajzīhim (for) their attribution waṣfahum Indeed, He innahu (is) All-Wise ḥakīmun All-Knowing ʿalīmun
And they say, "What is in the bellies of these animals1 is exclusively for our males and forbidden to our females. But if it is [born] dead, then all of them have shares therein." He will punish them for their description.2 Indeed, He is Wise and Knowing.
قَدْ Certainly qad (are) lost khasira those who alladhīna killed qatalū their children awlādahum (in) foolishness safahan without bighayri knowledge ʿil'min and forbid waḥarramū what mā (bas been) provided (to) them razaqahumu (by) Allah l-lahu inventing (lies) if'tirāan against ʿalā Allah l-lahi Certainly qad they have gone astray ḍallū and not wamā they are kānū guided-ones muh'tadīna
They will have lost who killed their children in foolishness without knowledge and prohibited what Allāh had provided for them, inventing untruth about Allāh. They have gone astray and were not [rightly] guided.
۞ وَهُوَ And He wahuwa (is) the One Who alladhī produced ansha-a gardens jannātin trellised maʿrūshātin and other than waghayra trellised maʿrūshātin and the date-palm wal-nakhla and the crops wal-zarʿa diverse mukh'talifan (are) its taste ukuluhu and the olives wal-zaytūna and the pomegranates wal-rumāna similar mutashābihan and other than waghayra similar mutashābihin Eat kulū of min its fruit thamarihi when idhā it bears fruit athmara and give waātū its due ḥaqqahu (on the) day yawma (of) its harvest ḥaṣādihi And (do) not walā (be) extravagant tus'rifū Indeed, He innahu (does) not lā love yuḥibbu the ones who are extravagant l-mus'rifīna
And He it is who causes gardens to grow, [both] trellised and untrellised, and palm trees and crops of different [kinds of] food and olives and pomegranates, similar and dissimilar. Eat of [each of] its fruit when it yields and give its due [zakāh] on the day of its harvest. And be not excessive.1 Indeed, He does not like those who commit excess.
وَمِنَ And of wamina the cattle l-anʿāmi (are some for) burden ḥamūlatan and (some for) meat wafarshan Eat kulū of what mimmā (has been) provided (to) you razaqakumu (by) Allah l-lahu and (do) not walā follow tattabiʿū (the) footsteps khuṭuwāti (of) Shaitaan l-shayṭāni Indeed, he innahu (is) to you lakum an enemy ʿaduwwun open mubīnun
And of the grazing livestock are carriers [of burdens] and those [too] small. Eat of what Allāh has provided for you and do not follow the footsteps of Satan.1 Indeed, he is to you a clear enemy.
ثَمَـٰنِيَةَ Eight thamāniyata pairs azwājin of mina the sheep l-ḍani two ith'nayni and of wamina the goats l-maʿzi two ith'nayni Say qul (Are) the two males āldhakarayni He has forbidden ḥarrama or ami the two females l-unthayayni or what ammā contains ish'tamalat [in it] ʿalayhi (the) wombs arḥāmu (of) the two females l-unthayayni Inform me nabbiūnī with knowledge biʿil'min if in you are kuntum truthful ṣādiqīna
[They are] eight mates - of the sheep, two and of the goats, two. Say, "Is it the two males He has forbidden or the two females or that which the wombs of the two females contain? Inform me with knowledge, if you should be truthful."
وَمِنَ And of wamina the camels l-ibili two ith'nayni and of wamina the cows l-baqari two ith'nayni Say qul (Is it) the two males āldhakarayni He (has) forbidden ḥarrama or ami the two females l-unthayayni or what ammā contains ish'tamalat [in it] ʿalayhi (the) wombs arḥāmu (of) the two females l-unthayayni Or am were you kuntum witnesses shuhadāa when idh enjoined you waṣṣākumu Allah l-lahu with this bihādhā Then who faman (is) more unjust aẓlamu than (one) who mimmani invents if'tarā against ʿalā Allah l-lahi a lie kadhiban to mislead liyuḍilla the people l-nāsa without bighayri knowledge ʿil'min Indeed inna Allah l-laha (does) not lā guide yahdī the people l-qawma the wrongdoing l-ẓālimīna
And of the camels, two and of the cattle, two. Say, "Is it the two males He has forbidden or the two females or that which the wombs of the two females contain? Or were you witnesses when Allāh charged you with this? Then who is more unjust than one who invents a lie about Allāh to mislead the people by [something] other than knowledge? Indeed, Allāh does not guide the wrongdoing people."
قُل Say qul Not lā (do) I find ajidu in fī what mā has been revealed ūḥiya to me ilayya (anything) forbidden muḥarraman to ʿalā an eater ṭāʿimin who eats it yaṭʿamuhu except illā that an it be yakūna dead maytatan or aw blood daman poured forth masfūḥan or aw (the) flesh laḥma (of) swine khinzīrin for indeed, it fa-innahu (is) filth rij'sun or aw (it be) disobedience fis'qan [is] dedicated uhilla to other than lighayri Allah l-lahi [on it] bihi But whoever famani (is) compelled uḍ'ṭurra not ghayra desiring bāghin and not walā transgressing ʿādin then indeed fa-inna your Lord rabbaka (is) Oft-Forgiving ghafūrun Most Merciful raḥīmun
Say, "I do not find within that which was revealed to me [anything] forbidden to one who would eat it unless it be a dead animal or blood spilled out or the flesh of swine - for indeed, it is impure - or it be [that slaughtered in] disobedience, dedicated to other than Allāh.1 But whoever is forced [by necessity], neither desiring [it] nor transgressing [its limit], then indeed, your Lord is Forgiving and Merciful."
وَعَلَى And to waʿalā those who alladhīna are Jews hādū We forbade ḥarramnā every kulla (animal) with dhī claws ẓufurin and of wamina the cows l-baqari and the sheep wal-ghanami We forbade ḥarramnā to them ʿalayhim their fat shuḥūmahumā except illā what mā carried ḥamalat their backs ẓuhūruhumā or awi the entrails l-ḥawāyā or aw what mā (is) joined ikh'talaṭa with the bone biʿaẓmin That dhālika (is) their recompense jazaynāhum for their rebellion bibaghyihim And indeed, We wa-innā [surely] are truthful laṣādiqūna
And to those who are Jews We prohibited every animal of uncloven hoof; and of the cattle and the sheep We prohibited to them their fat, except what adheres to their backs or the entrails or what is joined with bone. [By] that We repaid them for their transgression. And indeed, We are truthful.
فَإِن But if fa-in they deny you kadhabūka then say faqul Your Lord rabbukum (is the) Possessor dhū (of) Mercy raḥmatin Vast wāsiʿatin but not walā will be turned back yuraddu His wrath basuhu from ʿani the people l-qawmi (who are) criminals l-muj'rimīna
So if they deny you, [O Muḥammad], say, "Your Lord is the possessor of vast mercy; but His punishment cannot be repelled from the people who are criminals."
سَيَقُولُ Will say sayaqūlu those who alladhīna associate partners (with Allah) ashrakū If law Had willed shāa Allah l-lahu not mā we (would) have associated partners (with Allah) ashraknā and not walā our forefathers ābāunā and not walā we (would) have forbidden ḥarramnā [of] min anything shayin Likewise kadhālika denied kadhaba those who alladhīna (were from) min before them qablihim until ḥattā they tasted dhāqū Our wrath basanā Say qul Is hal with you ʿindakum [of] min any knowledge ʿil'min then produce it fatukh'rijūhu for us lanā Not in you follow tattabiʿūna except illā the assumption l-ẓana and not wa-in you (do) antum but illā guess takhruṣūna
Those who associated [others] with Allāh will say, "If Allāh had willed, we would not have associated [anything] and neither would our fathers, nor would we have prohibited anything." Likewise did those before deny until they tasted Our punishment. Say, "Do you have any knowledge that you can produce for us? You follow not except assumption, and you are not but misjudging."
قُلْ Say qul With Allah falillahi (is) the argument l-ḥujatu the conclusive l-bālighatu And if falaw He (had) willed shāa surely He (would) have guided you lahadākum all ajmaʿīna
Say, "With Allāh is the far-reaching [i.e., conclusive] argument. If He had willed, He would have guided you all."
قُلْ Say qul Bring forward halumma your witnesses shuhadāakumu those who alladhīna testify yashhadūna that anna Allah l-laha prohibited ḥarrama this hādhā Then if fa-in they testify shahidū then (do) not falā testify tashhad with them maʿahum And (do) not walā follow tattabiʿ (the) desires ahwāa (of) those who alladhīna denied kadhabū Our Signs biāyātinā and those who wa-alladhīna (do) not lā believe yu'minūna in the Hereafter bil-ākhirati while they wahum with their Lord birabbihim set up equals yaʿdilūna
Say, [O Muḥammad], "Bring forward your witnesses who will testify that Allāh has prohibited this." And if they testify, do not testify with them. And do not follow the desires of those who deny Our verses and those who do not believe in the Hereafter, while they equate [others] with their Lord.
۞ قُلْ Say qul Come taʿālaw I will recite atlu what mā has prohibited ḥarrama your Lord rabbukum to you ʿalaykum That (do) not allā associate tush'rikū with Him bihi anything shayan and with the parents wabil-wālidayni (be) good iḥ'sānan and (do) not walā kill taqtulū your children awlādakum (out) of min poverty im'lāqin We naḥnu provide for you narzuqukum and for them wa-iyyāhum And (do) not walā go near taqrabū [the] immoralities l-fawāḥisha what mā (is) apparent ẓahara of them min'hā and what wamā (is) concealed baṭana And (do) not walā kill taqtulū the soul l-nafsa which allatī has (been) forbidden ḥarrama (by) Allah l-lahu except illā by (legal) right bil-ḥaqi That dhālikum (He) has enjoined on you waṣṣākum with it bihi so that you may laʿallakum use reason taʿqilūna
Say, "Come, I will recite what your Lord has prohibited to you. [He commands] that you not associate anything with Him, and to parents, good treatment, and do not kill your children out of poverty; We will provide for you and them. And do not approach immoralities - what is apparent of them and what is concealed. And do not kill the soul which Allāh has forbidden [to be killed] except by [legal] right. This has He instructed you that you may use reason."
وَلَا And (do) not walā go near taqrabū wealth māla (of) the orphans l-yatīmi except illā with that bi-allatī which hiya (is) best aḥsanu until ḥattā he reaches yablugha his maturity ashuddahu And give full wa-awfū [the] measure l-kayla and the weight wal-mīzāna with justice bil-qis'ṭi Not lā We burden nukallifu any soul nafsan except illā (to) its capacity wus'ʿahā And when wa-idhā you speak qul'tum then be just fa-iʿ'dilū even if walaw he is kāna (one of) dhā a near relative qur'bā And (the) Covenant wabiʿahdi (of) Allah l-lahi fulfil awfū That dhālikum (He) has enjoined on you waṣṣākum with it bihi so that you may laʿallakum remember tadhakkarūna
And do not approach the orphan's property except in a way that is best [i.e., intending improvement] until he reaches maturity. And give full measure and weight in justice. We do not charge any soul except [with that within] its capacity. And when you speak [i.e., testify], be just, even if [it concerns] a near relative. And the covenant of Allāh fulfill. This has He instructed you that you may remember.
وَأَنَّ And that wa-anna this hādhā (is) My path ṣirāṭī straight mus'taqīman so follow it fa-ittabiʿūhu And (do) not walā follow tattabiʿū the (other) paths l-subula then they will separate fatafarraqa you bikum from ʿan His path sabīlihi That dhālikum (He) has enjoined on you waṣṣākum [with it] bihi so that you may laʿallakum become righteous tattaqūna
And, [moreover], this is My path, which is straight, so follow it; and do not follow [other] ways, for you will be separated from His way. This has He instructed you that you may become righteous.
ثُمَّ Moreover thumma We gave ātaynā Musa mūsā the Book l-kitāba completing (Our Favor) tamāman on ʿalā the one who alladhī did good aḥsana and an explanation watafṣīlan of every likulli thing shayin and a guidance wahudan and mercy waraḥmatan so that they may laʿallahum in (the) meeting biliqāi (with) their Lord rabbihim believe yu'minūna
Then1 We gave Moses the Scripture, making complete [Our favor] upon the one who did good [i.e., Moses] and as a detailed explanation of all things and as guidance and mercy that perhaps in the meeting with their Lord they would believe.
وَهَـٰذَا And this wahādhā (is) a Book kitābun We have revealed it anzalnāhu blessed mubārakun so follow it fa-ittabiʿūhu and fear (Allah) wa-ittaqū so that you may laʿallakum receive mercy tur'ḥamūna
And this [Qur’ān] is a Book We have revealed [which is] blessed, so follow it and fear Allāh that you may receive mercy.
أَن Lest an you say taqūlū Only innamā was revealed unzila the Book l-kitābu on ʿalā the two groups ṭāifatayni from min before us qablinā and indeed wa-in we were kunnā about ʿan their study dirāsatihim certainly unaware laghāfilīna
[We revealed it] lest you say, "The Scripture was only sent down to two groups before us, but we were of their study unaware,"
أَوْ Or aw you say taqūlū If law [that] annā was revealed unzila to us ʿalaynā the Book l-kitābu surely we (would) have been lakunnā better guided ahdā than them min'hum So verily faqad has come to you jāakum clear proofs bayyinatun from min your Lord rabbikum and a Guidance wahudan and a Mercy waraḥmatun Then who faman (is) more unjust aẓlamu than (he) who mimman denies kadhaba [with] (the) Verses biāyāti (of) Allah l-lahi and turns away waṣadafa from them ʿanhā We will recompense sanajzī those who alladhīna turn away yaṣdifūna from ʿan Our Signs āyātinā (with) an evil sūa punishment l-ʿadhābi because bimā they used to kānū turn away yaṣdifūna
Or lest you say, "If only the Scripture had been revealed to us, we would have been better guided than they." So there has [now] come to you a clear evidence from your Lord and a guidance and mercy. Then who is more unjust than one who denies the verses of Allāh and turns away from them? We will recompense those who turn away from Our verses with the worst of punishment for their having turned away.
هَلْ Are hal they waiting yanẓurūna except illā that an comes to them tatiyahumu the Angels l-malāikatu or aw comes yatiya your Lord rabbuka or aw comes yatiya some (of) baʿḍu (the) Signs āyāti (of) your Lord rabbika (The) Day yawma (when) comes yatī some (of) baʿḍu (the) Signs āyāti (of) your Lord rabbika not lā will benefit yanfaʿu a soul nafsan its faith īmānuhā not lam (if) it had takun believed āmanat from min before qablu or aw earned kasabat through fī its faith īmānihā any good khayran Say quli Wait intaẓirū Indeed, we innā (are) those who wait muntaẓirūna
Do they [then] wait for anything except that the angels should come to them or your Lord should come or that there come some of the signs1 of your Lord? The Day that some of the signs of your Lord will come no soul will benefit from its faith as long as it had not believed before or had earned through its faith some good. Say, "Wait. Indeed, we [also] are waiting."
إِنَّ Indeed inna those who alladhīna divide farraqū their religion dīnahum and become wakānū sects shiyaʿan you are not lasta with them min'hum in fī anything shayin Only innamā their affair amruhum (is) with ilā Allah l-lahi then thumma He will inform them yunabbi-uhum of what bimā they used to kānū do yafʿalūna
Indeed, those who have divided their religion and become sects - you, [O Muḥammad], are not [associated] with them in anything. Their affair is only [left] to Allāh; then He will inform them about what they used to do.
مَن Whoever man came jāa with a good deed bil-ḥasanati then for him falahu (is) ten (times) ʿashru the like of it amthālihā And whoever waman came jāa with an evil deed bil-sayi-ati then not falā he will be recompensed yuj'zā except illā the like of it mith'lahā and they wahum will not lā (be) wronged yuẓ'lamūna
Whoever comes [on the Day of Judgement] with a good deed will have ten times the like thereof [to his credit], and whoever comes with an evil deed will not be recompensed except the like thereof; and they will not be wronged.1
قُلْ Say qul Indeed (as for) me innanī has guided me hadānī my Lord rabbī to ilā a path ṣirāṭin straight mus'taqīmin a religion dīnan right qiyaman religion millata (of) Ibrahim ib'rāhīma a true monotheist ḥanīfan And not wamā he was kāna from mina the polytheists l-mush'rikīna
Say, "Indeed, my Lord has guided me to a straight path - a correct religion - the way of Abraham, inclining toward truth. And he was not among those who associated others with Allāh."
قُلْ Say qul Indeed inna my prayer ṣalātī and my rites of sacrifice wanusukī and my living wamaḥyāya and my dying wamamātī (are) for Allah lillahi Lord rabbi (of) the worlds l-ʿālamīna
Say, "Indeed, my prayer, my rites of sacrifice, my living and my dying are for Allāh, Lord of the worlds.
لَا No lā partners sharīka for Him lahu and with that wabidhālika I have been commanded umir'tu And I am wa-anā (the) first awwalu (of) the ones who surrender (to Him) l-mus'limīna
No partner has He. And this I have been commanded, and I am the first [among you] of the Muslims."1
قُلْ Say qul Is (it) other than aghayra Allah l-lahi I (should) seek abghī (as) a Lord rabban while He wahuwa (is) the Lord rabbu (of) every kulli thing shayin And not walā earns taksibu every kullu soul nafsin except illā against itself ʿalayhā and not walā bears taziru any bearer of burden wāziratun burden wiz'ra (of) another ukh'rā Then thumma to ilā your Lord rabbikum (is) your return marjiʿukum then He will inform you fayunabbi-ukum about what bimā you were kuntum concerning it fīhi differing takhtalifūna
Say, "Is it other than Allāh I should desire as a lord while He is the Lord of all things? And every soul earns not [blame] except against itself, and no bearer of burdens will bear the burden of another. Then to your Lord is your return, and He will inform you concerning that over which you used to differ."
وَهُوَ And He wahuwa (is) the One Who alladhī (has) made you jaʿalakum successors khalāifa (of) the earth l-arḍi and raised warafaʿa some of you baʿḍakum above fawqa others baʿḍin (in) ranks darajātin so that He may test you liyabluwakum in fī what mā He has given you ātākum Indeed inna your Lord rabbaka (is) swift sarīʿu (in) the punishment l-ʿiqābi and indeed, He (is) wa-innahu [certainly], Oft-Forgiving laghafūrun Most Merciful raḥīmun
And it is He who has made you successors upon the earth and has raised some of you above others in degrees [of rank] that He may try you through what He has given you. Indeed, your Lord is swift in penalty; but indeed, He is Forgiving and Merciful.
