Ghāfir
The Forgiver
﷽
غافر
تَنزِيلُ (The) revelation tanzīlu (of) the Book l-kitābi (is) from mina Allah l-lahi the All-Mighty l-ʿazīzi the All-Knower l-ʿalīmi
The revelation of the Book [i.e., the Qur’ān] is from Allāh, the Exalted in Might, the Knowing,
غَافِرِ (The) Forgiver ghāfiri (of) the sin l-dhanbi and (the) Acceptor waqābili (of) [the] repentance l-tawbi severe shadīdi (in) the punishment l-ʿiqābi Owner (of) the abundance dhī Owner (of) the abundance l-ṭawli (There is) no lā god ilāha except illā Him huwa to Him ilayhi (is) the final return l-maṣīru
The forgiver of sin, acceptor of repentance, severe in punishment, owner of abundance. There is no deity except Him; to Him is the destination.
مَا Not mā dispute yujādilu concerning fī (the) Verses āyāti (of) Allah l-lahi except illā those who alladhīna disbelieve kafarū so (let) not falā deceive you yaghrur'ka their movement taqallubuhum in fī the cities l-bilādi
No one disputes concerning the signs of Allāh except those who disbelieve, so be not deceived by their [uninhibited] movement throughout the land.
كَذَّبَتْ Denied kadhabat before them qablahum (the) people qawmu (of) Nuh nūḥin and the factions wal-aḥzābu after them min after them baʿdihim and plotted wahammat every kullu nation ummatin against their Messenger birasūlihim to seize him liyakhudhūhu and they disputed wajādalū by falsehood bil-bāṭili to refute liyud'ḥiḍū thereby bihi the truth l-ḥaqa So I seized them fa-akhadhtuhum Then how fakayfa was kāna My penalty ʿiqābi
The people of Noah denied before them and the [disbelieving] factions after them, and every nation intended [a plot] for their messenger to seize him, and they disputed by [using] falsehood to [attempt to] invalidate thereby the truth. So I seized them, and how [terrible] was My penalty.
وَكَذَٰلِكَ And thus wakadhālika has been justified ḥaqqat (the) Word kalimatu (of) your Lord rabbika against ʿalā those who alladhīna disbelieved kafarū that they annahum (are) companions aṣḥābu (of) the Fire l-nāri
And thus has the word [i.e., decree] of your Lord come into effect upon those who disbelieved that they are companions of the Fire.
ٱلَّذِينَ Those who alladhīna bear yaḥmilūna the Throne l-ʿarsha and who waman (are) around it ḥawlahu glorify yusabbiḥūna (the) praises biḥamdi (of) their Lord rabbihim and believe wayu'minūna in Him bihi and ask forgiveness wayastaghfirūna for those who lilladhīna believe āmanū Our Lord rabbanā You encompass wasiʿ'ta all kulla things shayin (by Your) Mercy raḥmatan and knowledge waʿil'man so forgive fa-igh'fir those who lilladhīna repent tābū and follow wa-ittabaʿū Your Way sabīlaka and save them (from) waqihim (the) punishment ʿadhāba (of) the Hellfire l-jaḥīmi
Those [angels] who carry the Throne and those around it exalt [Allāh] with praise of their Lord and believe in Him and ask forgiveness for those who have believed, [saying], "Our Lord, You have encompassed all things in mercy and knowledge, so forgive those who have repented and followed Your way and protect them from the punishment of Hellfire.
رَبَّنَا Our Lord rabbanā And admit them wa-adkhil'hum (to) Gardens jannāti (of) Eden ʿadnin which allatī You have promised them waʿadttahum and whoever waman (was) righteous ṣalaḥa among min their fathers ābāihim and their spouses wa-azwājihim and their offspring wadhurriyyātihim Indeed You innaka You anta (are) the All-Mighty l-ʿazīzu the All-Wise l-ḥakīmu
Our Lord, and admit them to gardens of perpetual residence which You have promised them and whoever was righteous among their forefathers, their spouses and their offspring. Indeed, it is You who is the Exalted in Might, the Wise.
وَقِهِمُ And protect them waqihimu (from) the evils l-sayiāti And whoever waman you protect taqi (from) the evils l-sayiāti that Day yawma-idhin then verily faqad You have bestowed mercy on him raḥim'tahu And that wadhālika [it] huwa (is) the success l-fawzu the great l-ʿaẓīmu
And protect them from the evil consequences [of their deeds]. And he whom You protect from evil consequences that Day - You will have given him mercy. And that is the great attainment."
إِنَّ Indeed inna those who alladhīna disbelieved kafarū will be cried out to them yunādawna Certainly Allah's hatred lamaqtu Certainly Allah's hatred l-lahi (was) greater akbaru than min your hatred maqtikum (of) yourselves anfusakum when idh you were called tud'ʿawna to ilā the faith l-īmāni and you disbelieved fatakfurūna
Indeed, those who disbelieve will be addressed, "The hatred of Allāh for you was [even] greater than your hatred of yourselves [this Day in Hell] when you were invited to faith, but you disbelieved [i.e., refused]."
قَالُوا۟ They (will) say qālū Our Lord rabbanā You gave us death amattanā twice ith'natayni and You gave us life wa-aḥyaytanā twice ith'natayni and we confess fa-iʿ'tarafnā our sins bidhunūbinā So is (there) fahal to ilā get out khurūjin any min way sabīlin
They will say, "Our Lord, You made us lifeless twice and gave us life twice, and we have confessed our sins. So is there to an exit any way?"
ذَٰلِكُم That dhālikum (is) because bi-annahu when idhā Allah was invoked duʿiya Allah was invoked l-lahu Alone waḥdahu you disbelieved kafartum but if wa-in (others) were associated yush'rak with Him bihi you believed tu'minū So the judgment fal-ḥuk'mu (is) with Allah lillahi the Most High l-ʿaliyi the Most Great l-kabīri
[They will be told], "That is because, when Allāh was called upon alone, you disbelieved; but if others were associated with Him, you believed. So the judgement is with Allāh, the Most High, the Grand."
هُوَ He huwa (is) the One Who alladhī shows you yurīkum His Signs āyātihi and sends down wayunazzilu for you lakum from mina the sky l-samāi provision riz'qan But (does) not wamā take heed yatadhakkaru except illā (one) who man turns yunību
It is He who shows you His signs and sends down to you from the sky, provision. But none will remember except he who turns back [in repentance].
فَٱدْعُوا۟ So invoke fa-id'ʿū Allah l-laha (being) sincere mukh'liṣīna to Him lahu (in) the religion l-dīna even though walaw dislike (it) kariha the disbelievers l-kāfirūna
So invoke Allāh, [being] sincere to Him in religion, although the disbelievers dislike it.
رَفِيعُ Possessor of the Highest Ranks rafīʿu Possessor of the Highest Ranks l-darajāti Owner (of) the Throne dhū Owner (of) the Throne l-ʿarshi He places yul'qī the inspiration l-rūḥa of min His Command amrihi upon ʿalā whom man He wills yashāu of min His slaves ʿibādihi to warn liyundhira (of the) Day yawma (of) the Meeting l-talāqi
[He is] the Exalted above [all] degrees, Owner of the Throne; He places the inspiration of His command [i.e., revelation] upon whom He wills of His servants to warn of the Day of Meeting.
يَوْمَ (The) Day yawma they hum come forth bārizūna not lā is hidden yakhfā from ʿalā Allah l-lahi about them min'hum anything shayon For whom limani (is) the Dominion l-mul'ku this Day l-yawma For Allah lillahi the One l-wāḥidi the Irresistible l-qahāri
The Day they come forth nothing concerning them will be concealed from Allāh. To whom belongs [all] sovereignty this Day? To Allāh, the One, the Prevailing.1
ٱلْيَوْمَ This Day al-yawma will be recompensed tuj'zā every kullu soul nafsin for what bimā it earned kasabat No lā injustice ẓul'ma today l-yawma Indeed inna Allah l-laha (is) Swift sarīʿu (in) Account l-ḥisābi
This Day every soul will be recompensed for what it earned. No injustice today! Indeed, Allāh is swift in account.
وَأَنذِرْهُمْ And warn them wa-andhir'hum (of the) Day yawma the Approaching l-āzifati when idhi the hearts l-qulūbu (are) at ladā the throats l-ḥanājiri choked kāẓimīna Not mā for the wrongdoers lilẓẓālimīna any min intimate friend ḥamīmin and no walā intercessor shafīʿin (who) is obeyed yuṭāʿu
And warn them, [O Muḥammad], of the Approaching Day, when hearts are at the throats, filled [with distress]. For the wrongdoers there will be no devoted friend and no intercessor [who is] obeyed.
يَعْلَمُ He knows yaʿlamu (the) stealthy glance khāinata (the) stealthy glance l-aʿyuni and what wamā conceal tukh'fī the breasts l-ṣudūru
He knows that which deceives the eyes and what the breasts conceal.
وَٱللَّهُ And Allah wal-lahu judges yaqḍī in truth bil-ḥaqi while those (whom) wa-alladhīna they invoke yadʿūna besides Him min besides Him dūnihi not lā they judge yaqḍūna with anything bishayin Indeed inna Allah l-laha He huwa (is) the All-Hearer l-samīʿu the All-Seer l-baṣīru
And Allāh judges with truth, while those they invoke1 besides Him judge not with anything. Indeed, Allāh - He is the Hearing, the Seeing.
۞ أَوَلَمْ Do not awalam they travel yasīrū in fī the earth l-arḍi and see fayanẓurū how kayfa was kāna (the) end ʿāqibatu (of) those who alladhīna were kānū before them min before them qablihim They were kānū [they] hum superior ashadda to them min'hum (in) strength quwwatan and (in) impressions waāthāran in fī the land l-arḍi but Allah seized them fa-akhadhahumu but Allah seized them l-lahu for their sins bidhunūbihim and not wamā was kāna for them lahum against mina Allah l-lahi any min protector wāqin
Have they not traveled through the land and observed how was the end of those who were before them? They were greater than them in strength and in impression on the land, but Allāh seized them for their sins. And they had not from Allāh any protector.
ذَٰلِكَ That dhālika (was) because [they] bi-annahum used to come to them kānat used to come to them tatīhim their Messengers rusuluhum with clear proofs bil-bayināti but they disbelieved fakafarū So Allah seized them fa-akhadhahumu So Allah seized them l-lahu Indeed, He innahu (is) All-Strong qawiyyun severe shadīdu (in) punishment l-ʿiqābi
That was because their messengers were coming to them with clear proofs, but they disbelieved, so Allāh seized them. Indeed, He is Powerful and severe in punishment.
وَلَقَدْ And certainly walaqad We sent arsalnā Musa mūsā with Our Signs biāyātinā and an authority wasul'ṭānin clear mubīnin
And We did certainly send Moses with Our signs and a clear authority1
إِلَىٰ To ilā Firaun fir'ʿawna Haman wahāmāna and Qarun waqārūna but they said faqālū A magician sāḥirun a liar kadhābun
To Pharaoh, Hāmān and Qārūn, but they said, "[He is] a magician and a liar."
فَلَمَّا Then when falammā he brought to them jāahum the truth bil-ḥaqi from min Us ʿindinā they said qālū Kill uq'tulū (the) sons abnāa (of) those who alladhīna believe āmanū with him maʿahu and let live wa-is'taḥyū their women nisāahum And not wamā (is the) plot kaydu (of) the disbelievers l-kāfirīna but illā in fī error ḍalālin
And when he brought them the truth from Us, they said, "Kill the sons of those who have believed with him and keep their women alive." But the plan of the disbelievers is not except in error.
وَقَالَ And said waqāla Firaun fir'ʿawnu Leave me dharūnī (so that) I kill aqtul Musa mūsā and let him call walyadʿu his Lord rabbahu Indeed, I innī [I] fear akhāfu that an he will change yubaddila your religion dīnakum or aw that an he may cause to appear yuẓ'hira in fī the land l-arḍi the corruption l-fasāda
And Pharaoh said, "Let me kill Moses and let him call upon his Lord. Indeed, I fear that he will change your religion or that he will cause corruption1 in the land."
وَقَالَ And said waqāla Musa mūsā Indeed, I innī [I] seek refuge ʿudh'tu in my Lord birabbī and your Lord warabbikum from min every kulli arrogant one mutakabbirin not lā who believes yu'minu (in the) Day biyawmi (of) the Account l-ḥisābi
But Moses said, "Indeed, I have sought refuge in my Lord and your Lord from every arrogant one who does not believe in the Day of Account."
وَقَالَ And said waqāla a man rajulun believing mu'minun from min (the) family āli (of) Firaun fir'ʿawna who conceal(ed) yaktumu his faith īmānahu Will you kill ataqtulūna a man rajulan because an he says yaqūla My Lord rabbiya (is) Allah l-lahu and indeed waqad he has brought you jāakum clear proofs bil-bayināti from min your Lord rabbikum And if wa-in he is yaku a liar kādhiban then upon him faʿalayhi (is) his lie kadhibuhu and if wa-in he is yaku truthful ṣādiqan (there) will strike you yuṣib'kum some (of) baʿḍu (that) which alladhī he threatens you yaʿidukum Indeed inna Allah l-laha (does) not lā guide yahdī (one) who man [he] huwa (is) a transgressor mus'rifun a liar kadhābun
And a believing man from the family of Pharaoh who concealed his faith said, "Do you kill a man [merely] because he says, 'My Lord is Allāh' while he has brought you clear proofs from your Lord? And if he should be lying, then upon him is [the consequence of] his lie; but if he should be truthful, there will strike you some of what he promises you. Indeed, Allāh does not guide one who is a transgressor and a liar.
يَـٰقَوْمِ O my people yāqawmi For you lakumu (is) the kingdom l-mul'ku today l-yawma dominant ẓāhirīna in fī the land l-arḍi but who faman will help us yanṣurunā from min (the) punishment basi (of) Allah l-lahi if in it came to us jāanā Said qāla Firaun fir'ʿawnu Not mā I show you urīkum except illā what mā I see arā and not wamā I guide you ahdīkum except illā (to the) path sabīla the right l-rashādi
O my people, sovereignty is yours today, [your being] dominant in the land. But who would protect us from the punishment of Allāh if it came to us?" Pharaoh said, "I do not show you except what I see, and I do not guide you except to the way of right conduct."
وَقَالَ And said waqāla (he) who alladhī believed āmana O my people yāqawmi Indeed I innī [I] fear akhāfu for you ʿalaykum like mith'la (the) day yawmi (of) the companies l-aḥzābi
And he who believed said, "O my people, indeed I fear for you [a fate] like the day of the companies1 -
مِثْلَ Like mith'la (the) plight dabi (of the) people qawmi (of) Nuh nūḥin and Aad waʿādin and Thamud wathamūda and those wa-alladhīna after them min after them baʿdihim And Allah (does) not wamā And Allah (does) not l-lahu want yurīdu injustice ẓul'man for (His) slaves lil'ʿibādi
Like the custom of the people of Noah and of ʿAad and Thamūd and those after them. And Allāh wants no injustice for [His] servants.
وَيَـٰقَوْمِ And O my people wayāqawmi Indeed, I innī [I] fear akhāfu for you ʿalaykum (the) Day yawma (of) Calling l-tanādi
And O my people, indeed I fear for you the Day of Calling1 -
يَوْمَ A Day yawma you will turn back tuwallūna fleeing mud'birīna not mā for you lakum from mina Allah l-lahi any min protector ʿāṣimin And whoever waman Allah lets go astray yuḍ'lili Allah lets go astray l-lahu then not famā for him lahu any min guide hādin
The Day you will turn your backs fleeing; there is not for you from Allāh any protector. And whoever Allāh sends astray - there is not for him any guide.
وَلَقَدْ And indeed walaqad came to you jāakum Yusuf yūsufu before min before qablu with clear proofs bil-bayināti but not famā you ceased zil'tum in fī doubt shakkin about what mimmā he brought to you jāakum [with it] bihi until ḥattā when idhā he died halaka you said qul'tum Never lan will Allah raise yabʿatha will Allah raise l-lahu after him min after him baʿdihi a Messenger rasūlan Thus kadhālika Allah lets go astray yuḍillu Allah lets go astray l-lahu who man [he] huwa (is) a transgressor mus'rifun a doubter mur'tābun
And Joseph had already come to you before with clear proofs, but you remained in doubt of that which he brought to you, until when he died, you said, 'Never will Allāh send a messenger after him.' Thus does Allāh leave astray he who is a transgressor and skeptic."
ٱلَّذِينَ Those who alladhīna dispute yujādilūna concerning fī (the) Signs āyāti (of) Allah l-lahi without bighayri any authority sul'ṭānin (having) come to them atāhum (it) is greatly kabura hateful maqtan near Allah ʿinda near Allah l-lahi and near waʿinda those alladhīna who believe āmanū Thus kadhālika Allah sets a seal yaṭbaʿu Allah sets a seal l-lahu over ʿalā every kulli heart qalbi (of) an arrogant mutakabbirin tyrant jabbārin
Those who dispute concerning the signs of Allāh without an authority1 having come to them - great is hatred [of them] in the sight of Allāh and in the sight of those who have believed. Thus does Allāh seal over every heart [belonging to] an arrogant tyrant.
وَقَالَ And said waqāla Firaun fir'ʿawnu O Haman yāhāmānu Construct ib'ni for me lī a tower ṣarḥan that I may laʿallī reach ablughu the ways l-asbāba
And Pharaoh said, "O Hāmān, construct for me a tower that I might reach the ways1 -
أَسْبَـٰبَ (The) ways asbāba (to) the heavens l-samāwāti so I may look fa-aṭṭaliʿa at ilā (the) God ilāhi (of) Musa mūsā and indeed, I wa-innī [I] surely think him la-aẓunnuhu (to be) a liar kādhiban And thus wakadhālika was made fair-seeming zuyyina to Firaun lifir'ʿawna (the) evil sūu (of) his deed ʿamalihi and he was averted waṣudda from ʿani the way l-sabīli And not wamā (was the) plot kaydu (of) Firaun fir'ʿawna except illā in fī ruin tabābin
The ways into the heavens - so that I may look at the deity of Moses; but indeed, I think he is a liar." And thus was made attractive to Pharaoh the evil of his deed, and he was averted from the [right] way. And the plan of Pharaoh was not except in ruin.
وَقَالَ And said waqāla the one who alladhī believed āmana O my people yāqawmi Follow me ittabiʿūni I will guide you ahdikum (to the) way sabīla the right l-rashādi
And he who believed said, "O my people, follow me; I will guide you to the way of right conduct.
يَـٰقَوْمِ O my people yāqawmi Only innamā this hādhihi the life l-ḥayatu (of) the world l-dun'yā (is) enjoyment matāʿun and indeed wa-inna the Hereafter l-ākhirata it hiya (is the) home dāru (of) settlement l-qarāri
O my people, this worldly life is only [temporary] enjoyment, and indeed, the Hereafter - that is the home of [permanent] settlement.
مَنْ Whoever man does ʿamila an evil sayyi-atan then not falā he will be recompensed yuj'zā but illā (the) like thereof mith'lahā and whoever waman does ʿamila righteous (deeds) ṣāliḥan of min male dhakarin or aw female unthā while he wahuwa (is) a believer mu'minun then those fa-ulāika will enter yadkhulūna Paradise l-janata they will be given provision yur'zaqūna in it fīhā without bighayri account ḥisābin
Whoever does an evil deed will not be recompensed except by the like thereof; but whoever does righteousness, whether male or female, while he is a believer - those will enter Paradise, being given provision therein without account.
۞ وَيَـٰقَوْمِ And O my people wayāqawmi What (is) mā for me lī (that) I call you adʿūkum to ilā the salvation l-najati while you call me watadʿūnanī to ilā the Fire l-nāri
And O my people, how is it that I invite you to salvation while you invite me to the Fire?
تَدْعُونَنِى You call me tadʿūnanī that I disbelieve li-akfura in Allah bil-lahi and (to) associate wa-ush'rika with Him bihi what mā not laysa for me lī of it bihi any knowledge ʿil'mun and I wa-anā call you adʿūkum to ilā the All-Mighty l-ʿazīzi the Oft-Forgiving l-ghafāri
You invite me to disbelieve in Allāh and associate with Him that of which I have no knowledge, and I invite you to the Exalted in Might, the Perpetual Forgiver.1
لَا No lā doubt jarama that what annamā you call me tadʿūnanī to it ilayhi not laysa for it lahu a claim daʿwatun in fī the world l-dun'yā and not walā in fī the Hereafter l-ākhirati and that wa-anna our return maraddanā (is) to ilā Allah l-lahi and that wa-anna the transgressors l-mus'rifīna they hum (will be the) companions aṣḥābu (of) the Fire l-nāri
Assuredly, that to which you invite me has no [response to a] supplication in this world or in the Hereafter; and indeed, our return is to Allāh, and indeed, the transgressors will be companions of the Fire.
فَسَتَذْكُرُونَ And you will remember fasatadhkurūna what mā I say aqūlu to you lakum and I entrust wa-ufawwiḍu my affair amrī to ilā Allah l-lahi Indeed inna Allah l-laha (is) All-Seer baṣīrun of (His) slaves bil-ʿibādi
And you will remember what I [now] say to you, and I entrust my affair to Allāh. Indeed, Allāh is Seeing of [His] servants."
فَوَقَىٰهُ So Allah protected him fawaqāhu So Allah protected him l-lahu (from the) evils sayyiāti that mā they plotted makarū and enveloped waḥāqa (the) people biāli (of) Firaun fir'ʿawna (the) worst sūu punishment l-ʿadhābi
So Allāh protected him from the evils they plotted, and the people of Pharaoh were enveloped by the worst of punishment -
ٱلنَّارُ The Fire al-nāru they are exposed yuʿ'raḍūna to it ʿalayhā morning ghuduwwan and evening waʿashiyyan And (the) Day wayawma (will be) established taqūmu the Hour l-sāʿatu Cause to enter adkhilū (the) people āla (of) Firaun fir'ʿawna (in the) severest ashadda punishment l-ʿadhābi
The Fire; they are exposed to it morning and evening.1 And the Day the Hour appears [it will be said], "Make the people of Pharaoh enter the severest punishment."
وَإِذْ And when wa-idh they will dispute yataḥājjūna in fī the Fire l-nāri then will say fayaqūlu the weak l-ḍuʿafāu to those who lilladhīna were arrogant is'takbarū Indeed, we innā [we] were kunnā for you lakum followers tabaʿan so can fahal you antum avert mugh'nūna from us ʿannā a portion naṣīban of mina the Fire l-nāri
And [mention] when they will argue within the Fire, and the weak will say to those who had been arrogant, "Indeed, we were [only] your followers, so will you relieve us of a share of the Fire?"
قَالَ Will say qāla those who alladhīna (were) arrogant is'takbarū Indeed, we innā all kullun (are) in it fīhā Indeed inna Allah l-laha certainly qad has judged ḥakama between bayna (His) slaves l-ʿibādi
Those who had been arrogant will say, "Indeed, all [of us] are in it. Indeed, Allāh has judged between the servants."
وَقَالَ And will say waqāla those alladhīna in fī the Fire l-nāri to (the) keepers likhazanati (of) Hell jahannama Call id'ʿū your Lord rabbakum (to) lighten yukhaffif for us ʿannā a day yawman of mina the punishment l-ʿadhābi
And those in the Fire will say to the keepers of Hell, "Supplicate your Lord to lighten for us a day from the punishment."
قَالُوٓا۟ They (will) say qālū Did there not awalam Did there not taku come to you tatīkum your Messengers rusulukum with clear proofs bil-bayināti They (will) say qālū Yes balā They (will) say qālū Then call fa-id'ʿū but not wamā (is the) call duʿāu (of) the disbelievers l-kāfirīna except illā in fī error ḍalālin
They will say, "Did there not come to you your messengers with clear proofs?" They will say, "Yes." They will reply, "Then supplicate [yourselves], but the supplication of the disbelievers is not except in error [i.e., futility]."
إِنَّا Indeed We innā We will surely help lananṣuru Our Messengers rusulanā and those who wa-alladhīna believe āmanū in fī the life l-ḥayati (of) the world l-dun'yā and (on the) Day wayawma (when) will stand yaqūmu the witnesses l-ashhādu
Indeed, We will support Our messengers and those who believe during the life of this world and on the Day when the witnesses will stand -
يَوْمَ (The) Day yawma not lā will benefit yanfaʿu the wrongdoers l-ẓālimīna their excuse maʿdhiratuhum and for them walahumu (is) the curse l-laʿnatu and for them walahum (is the) worst sūu home l-dāri
The Day their excuse will not benefit the wrongdoers, and they will have the curse, and they will have the worst home [i.e., Hell].
وَلَقَدْ And certainly walaqad We gave ātaynā Musa mūsā the guidance l-hudā and We caused to inherit wa-awrathnā (the) Children of Israel banī (the) Children of Israel is'rāīla the Book l-kitāba
And We had certainly given Moses guidance, and We caused the Children of Israel to inherit the Scripture
هُدًۭى A guide hudan and a reminder wadhik'rā for those li-ulī (of) understanding l-albābi
As guidance and a reminder for those of understanding.
فَٱصْبِرْ So be patient fa-iṣ'bir indeed inna (the) Promise of Allah waʿda (the) Promise of Allah l-lahi (is) true ḥaqqun And ask forgiveness wa-is'taghfir for your sin lidhanbika and glorify wasabbiḥ (the) praise biḥamdi (of) your Lord rabbika in the evening bil-ʿashiyi and the morning wal-ib'kāri
So be patient, [O Muḥammad]. Indeed, the promise of Allāh is truth. And ask forgiveness for your sin1 and exalt [Allāh] with praise of your Lord in the evening and the morning.
إِنَّ Indeed inna those who alladhīna dispute yujādilūna concerning fī (the) Signs āyāti (of) Allah l-lahi without bighayri any authority sul'ṭānin (which) came to them atāhum not in (is) in fī their breasts ṣudūrihim but illā greatness kib'run not mā they hum (can) reach it bibālighīhi So seek refuge fa-is'taʿidh in Allah bil-lahi Indeed He innahu He huwa (is) the All-Hearer l-samīʿu the All-Seer l-baṣīru
Indeed, those who dispute concerning the signs of Allāh without [any] evidence having come to them - there is not within their breasts except pride, [the extent of] which they cannot reach. So seek refuge in Allāh. Indeed, it is He who is the Hearing, the Seeing.
لَخَلْقُ Surely, (the) creation lakhalqu (of) the heavens l-samāwāti and the earth wal-arḍi (is) greater akbaru than min (the) creation khalqi (of) the mankind l-nāsi but walākinna most akthara (of) the people l-nāsi (do) not lā know yaʿlamūna
The creation of the heavens and earth is greater than the creation of mankind, but most of the people do not know.
وَمَا And not wamā (are) equal yastawī the blind l-aʿmā and the seeing wal-baṣīru and those who wa-alladhīna believe āmanū and do waʿamilū righteous deeds l-ṣāliḥāti and not walā the evildoer l-musīu Little qalīlan (is) what mā you take heed tatadhakkarūna
And not equal are the blind and the seeing, nor are those who believe and do righteous deeds and the evildoer. Little do you remember.
إِنَّ Indeed inna the Hour l-sāʿata (is) surely coming laātiyatun no lā doubt rayba in it fīhā but walākinna most akthara (of) the people l-nāsi (do) not lā believe yu'minūna
Indeed, the Hour is coming - no doubt about it - but most of the people do not believe.
وَقَالَ And said waqāla your Lord rabbukumu Call upon Me id'ʿūnī I will respond astajib to you lakum Indeed inna those who alladhīna (are) proud yastakbirūna to ʿan worship Me ʿibādatī will enter sayadkhulūna Hell jahannama (in) humiliation dākhirīna
And your Lord says, "Call upon Me; I will respond to you." Indeed, those who disdain My worship will enter Hell [rendered] contemptible.
ٱللَّهُ Allah al-lahu (is) the One Who alladhī made jaʿala for you lakumu the night al-layla that you may rest litaskunū in it fīhi and the day wal-nahāra giving visibility mub'ṣiran Indeed inna Allah l-laha (is) Full (of) Bounty ladhū (is) Full (of) Bounty faḍlin to ʿalā the people l-nāsi but walākinna most akthara (of) the people l-nāsi (do) not lā give thanks yashkurūna
It is Allāh who made for you the night that you may rest therein and the day giving sight.1 Indeed, Allāh is the possessor of bounty for the people, but most of them are not grateful.
ذَٰلِكُمُ That dhālikumu (is) Allah l-lahu your Lord rabbukum (the) Creator khāliqu (of) all kulli things shayin (there is) no lā god ilāha except illā Him huwa So how fa-annā are you deluded tu'fakūna
That is Allāh, your Lord, Creator of all things; there is no deity except Him, so how are you deluded?
كَذَٰلِكَ Thus kadhālika were deluded yu'faku those who alladhīna were kānū (the) Signs biāyāti (of) Allah l-lahi rejecting yajḥadūna
Thus were those [before you] deluded who were rejecting the signs of Allāh.
ٱللَّهُ Allah al-lahu (is) the One Who alladhī made jaʿala for you lakumu the earth l-arḍa a place of settlement qarāran and the sky wal-samāa a canopy bināan and He formed you waṣawwarakum and perfected fa-aḥsana your forms ṣuwarakum and provided you warazaqakum of mina the good things l-ṭayibāti That dhālikumu (is) Allah l-lahu your Lord rabbukum Then blessed (is) fatabāraka Allah l-lahu (the) Lord rabbu (of) the worlds l-ʿālamīna
It is Allāh who made for you the earth a place of settlement and the sky a structure [i.e., ceiling] and formed you and perfected your forms and provided you with good things. That is Allāh, your Lord; then blessed is Allāh, Lord of the worlds.
هُوَ He huwa (is) the Ever-Living l-ḥayu (there is) no lā god ilāha but illā He huwa so call Him fa-id'ʿūhu (being) sincere mukh'liṣīna to Him lahu (in) the religion l-dīna All praise (be) l-ḥamdu to Allah lillahi (the) Lord rabbi (of) the worlds l-ʿālamīna
He is the Ever-Living;1 there is no deity except Him, so call upon Him, [being] sincere to Him in religion. [All] praise is [due] to Allāh, Lord of the worlds.
۞ قُلْ Say qul Indeed, I innī [I] have been forbidden nuhītu to an worship aʿbuda those whom alladhīna you call tadʿūna besides min besides dūni Allah l-lahi when lammā have come to me jāaniya the clear proofs l-bayinātu from min my Lord rabbī and I am commanded wa-umir'tu to an submit us'lima to (the) Lord lirabbi (of) the worlds l-ʿālamīna
Say, [O Muḥammad], "Indeed, I have been forbidden to worship those you call upon besides Allāh once the clear proofs have come to me from my Lord, and I have been commanded to submit to the Lord of the worlds."
هُوَ He huwa (is) the One Who alladhī created you khalaqakum from min dust turābin then thumma from min a semen-drop nuṭ'fatin then thumma from min a clinging substance ʿalaqatin then thumma He brings you out yukh'rijukum (as) a child ṭif'lan then thumma lets you reach litablughū your maturity ashuddakum then thumma lets you become litakūnū old shuyūkhan and among you waminkum (is he) who man dies yutawaffā before min before qablu and lets you reach walitablughū a term ajalan specified musamman and that you may walaʿallakum use reason taʿqilūna
It is He who created you from dust, then from a sperm-drop, then from a clinging clot; then He brings you out as a child; then [He develops you] that you reach your [time of] maturity, then [further] that you become elders. And among you is he who is taken in death before [that], so that you reach a specified term;1 and perhaps you will use reason.
هُوَ He huwa (is) the One Who alladhī gives life yuḥ'yī and causes death wayumītu And when fa-idhā He decrees qaḍā a matter amran then only fa-innamā He says yaqūlu to it lahu Be kun and it is fayakūnu
He it is who gives life and causes death; and when He decrees a matter, He but says to it, "Be," and it is.
أَلَمْ Do not alam you see tara [to] ilā those who alladhīna dispute yujādilūna concerning fī (the) Signs āyāti (of) Allah l-lahi How annā they are turned away yuṣ'rafūna
Do you not consider those who dispute concerning the signs of Allāh - how are they averted?
ٱلَّذِينَ Those who alladhīna deny kadhabū the Book bil-kitābi and with what wabimā We sent arsalnā with it bihi Our Messengers rusulanā but soon fasawfa they will know yaʿlamūna
Those who deny the Book [i.e., the Qur’ān] and that with which We sent Our messengers - they are going to know,
إِذِ When idhi the iron collars l-aghlālu (will be) around fī their necks aʿnāqihim and the chains wal-salāsilu they will be dragged yus'ḥabūna
When the shackles are around their necks and the chains; they will be dragged
فِى In fī the boiling water l-ḥamīmi then thumma in fī the Fire l-nāri they will be burned yus'jarūna
In boiling water; then in the Fire they will be filled [with flame].
ثُمَّ Then thumma it will be said qīla to them lahum Where ayna (is) that which mā you used to kuntum associate tush'rikūna
Then it will be said to them, "Where is that which you used to associate [with Him in worship]
مِن Other than min Other than dūni Allah l-lahi They will say qālū They have departed ḍallū from us ʿannā Nay bal Not lam we used to nakun [we] call nadʿū before min before qablu anything shayan Thus kadhālika Allah lets go astray yuḍillu Allah lets go astray l-lahu the disbelievers l-kāfirīna
Other than Allāh?" They will say, "They have departed from us; rather, we did not used to invoke previously anything." Thus does Allāh put astray the disbelievers.
ذَٰلِكُم That was dhālikum because bimā you used to kuntum rejoice tafraḥūna in fī the earth l-arḍi without bighayri right l-ḥaqi and because wabimā you used to kuntum be insolent tamraḥūna
[The angels will say], "That was because you used to exult upon the earth without right and you used to behave insolently.
ٱدْخُلُوٓا۟ Enter ud'khulū (the) gates abwāba (of) Hell jahannama (to) abide forever khālidīna in it fīhā and wretched is fabi'sa (the) abode mathwā (of) the arrogant l-mutakabirīna
Enter the gates of Hell to abide eternally therein, and wretched is the residence of the arrogant."
فَٱصْبِرْ So be patient fa-iṣ'bir indeed inna (the) Promise waʿda (of) Allah l-lahi (is) true ḥaqqun And whether fa-immā We show you nuriyannaka some baʿḍa (of) what alladhī We have promised them naʿiduhum or aw We cause you to die natawaffayannaka then to Us fa-ilaynā they will be returned yur'jaʿūna
So be patient, [O Muḥammad]; indeed, the promise of Allāh is truth. And whether We show you some of what We have promised them or We take you in death, it is to Us they will be returned.
وَلَقَدْ And certainly walaqad We have sent arsalnā Messengers rusulan before you min before you qablika Among them min'hum (are) who man We have related qaṣaṣnā to you ʿalayka and among them wamin'hum (are) who man not lam We have related naqṣuṣ to you ʿalayka And not wamā is kāna for any Messenger lirasūlin that an he brings yatiya a Sign biāyatin except illā by (the) permission bi-idh'ni (of) Allah l-lahi So when fa-idhā comes jāa (the) Command amru (of) Allah l-lahi it will be decided quḍiya in truth bil-ḥaqi and will lose wakhasira there hunālika the falsifiers l-mub'ṭilūna
And We have already sent messengers before you. Among them are those [whose stories] We have related to you, and among them are those [whose stories] We have not related to you. And it was not for any messenger to bring a sign [or verse] except by permission of Allāh. So when the command of Allāh comes, it will be concluded [i.e., judged] in truth, and the falsifiers will thereupon lose [all].
ٱللَّهُ Allah al-lahu (is) the One Who alladhī made jaʿala for you lakumu the cattle l-anʿāma that you may ride litarkabū some of them min'hā and some of them wamin'hā you eat takulūna
It is Allāh who made for you the grazing animals upon which you ride, and some of them you eat.
وَلَكُمْ And for you walakum in them fīhā (are) benefits manāfiʿu and that you may reach walitablughū through them ʿalayhā a need ḥājatan (that is) in fī your breasts ṣudūrikum and upon them waʿalayhā and upon waʿalā the ships l-ful'ki you are carried tuḥ'malūna
And for you therein are [other] benefits and that you may realize upon them a need which is in your breasts;1 and upon them and upon ships you are carried.
وَيُرِيكُمْ And He shows you wayurīkum His Signs āyātihi Then which fa-ayya (of the) Signs āyāti (of) Allah l-lahi will you deny tunkirūna
And He shows you His signs. So which of the signs of Allāh do you deny?
أَفَلَمْ Do they not afalam travel yasīrū through fī the land l-arḍi and see fayanẓurū how kayfa was kāna (the) end ʿāqibatu (of) those who alladhīna (were) before them min (were) before them qablihim They were kānū more numerous akthara than them min'hum and mightier wa-ashadda (in) strength quwwatan and impressions waāthāran in fī the land l-arḍi but not famā availed aghnā them ʿanhum what mā they used to kānū earn yaksibūna
Have they not traveled through the land and observed how was the end of those before them? They were more numerous than themselves and greater in strength and in impression on the land, but they were not availed by what they used to earn.
فَلَمَّا Then when falammā came to them jāathum their Messengers rusuluhum with clear proofs bil-bayināti they rejoiced fariḥū in what bimā they had ʿindahum of mina the knowledge l-ʿil'mi and enveloped waḥāqa them bihim what mā they used to kānū [at it] bihi mock yastahziūna
And when their messengers came to them with clear proofs, they [merely] rejoiced in what they had of knowledge, but they were enveloped by what they used to ridicule.
فَلَمَّا So when falammā they saw ra-aw Our punishment basanā they said qālū We believe āmannā in Allah bil-lahi Alone waḥdahu and we disbelieve wakafarnā in what bimā we used to kunnā with Him bihi associate mush'rikīna
And when they saw Our punishment, they said, "We believe in Allāh alone and disbelieve in that which we used to associate with Him."
فَلَمْ But did not falam But did not yaku benefit them yanfaʿuhum their faith īmānuhum when lammā they saw ra-aw Our punishment basanā (Such is the) Way sunnata (of) Allah l-lahi which allatī (has) indeed qad preceded khalat among fī His slaves ʿibādihi And are lost wakhasira there hunālika the disbelievers l-kāfirūna
But never did their faith benefit them once they saw Our punishment. [It is] the established way of Allāh which has preceded among His servants. And the disbelievers thereupon lost [all].
