Alif, Lām, Meem.1

— Saheeh International

أَحَسِبَ

Do think

aḥasiba

ٱلنَّاسُ

the people

l-nāsu

أَن

that

an

يُتْرَكُوٓا۟

they will be left

yut'rakū

أَن

because

an

يَقُولُوٓا۟

they say

yaqūlū

ءَامَنَّا

We believe

āmannā

وَهُمْ

and they

wahum

لَا

will not be tested

يُفْتَنُونَ

will not be tested

yuf'tanūna

٢

Do the people think that they will be left to say, "We believe" and they will not be tried?

— Saheeh International

وَلَقَدْ

And indeed

walaqad

فَتَنَّا

We tested

fatannā

ٱلَّذِينَ

those who

alladhīna

مِن

(were) before them

min

قَبْلِهِمْ ۖ

(were) before them

qablihim

فَلَيَعْلَمَنَّ

And Allah will surely make evident

falayaʿlamanna

ٱللَّهُ

And Allah will surely make evident

l-lahu

ٱلَّذِينَ

those who

alladhīna

صَدَقُوا۟

(are) truthful

ṣadaqū

وَلَيَعْلَمَنَّ

and He will surely make evident

walayaʿlamanna

ٱلْكَـٰذِبِينَ

the liars

l-kādhibīna

٣

But We have certainly tried those before them, and Allāh will surely make evident those who are truthful, and He will surely make evident the liars.

— Saheeh International

أَمْ

Or

am

حَسِبَ

think

ḥasiba

ٱلَّذِينَ

those who

alladhīna

يَعْمَلُونَ

do

yaʿmalūna

ٱلسَّيِّـَٔاتِ

evil deeds

l-sayiāti

أَن

that

an

يَسْبِقُونَا ۚ

they can outrun Us

yasbiqūnā

سَآءَ

Evil is

sāa

مَا

what

يَحْكُمُونَ

they judge

yaḥkumūna

٤

Or do those who do evil deeds think they can outrun [i.e., escape] Us? Evil is what they judge.

— Saheeh International

مَن

Whoever

man

كَانَ

[is]

kāna

يَرْجُوا۟

hopes

yarjū

لِقَآءَ

(for the) meeting

liqāa

ٱللَّهِ

(with) Allah

l-lahi

فَإِنَّ

then indeed

fa-inna

أَجَلَ

(the) Term

ajala

ٱللَّهِ

(of) Allah

l-lahi

لَـَٔاتٍۢ ۚ

(is) surely coming

laātin

وَهُوَ

And He

wahuwa

ٱلسَّمِيعُ

(is) the All-Hearer

l-samīʿu

ٱلْعَلِيمُ

the All-Knower

l-ʿalīmu

٥

Whoever should hope for the meeting with Allāh - indeed, the term [decreed by] Allāh is coming. And He is the Hearing, the Knowing.

— Saheeh International

وَمَن

And whoever

waman

جَـٰهَدَ

strives

jāhada

فَإِنَّمَا

then only

fa-innamā

يُجَـٰهِدُ

he strives

yujāhidu

لِنَفْسِهِۦٓ ۚ

for himself

linafsihi

إِنَّ

Indeed

inna

ٱللَّهَ

Allah

l-laha

لَغَنِىٌّ

(is) Free from need

laghaniyyun

عَنِ

of

ʿani

ٱلْعَـٰلَمِينَ

the worlds

l-ʿālamīna

٦

And whoever strives only strives for [the benefit of] himself. Indeed, Allāh is Free from need of the worlds.

— Saheeh International

وَٱلَّذِينَ

And those who

wa-alladhīna

ءَامَنُوا۟

believe

āmanū

وَعَمِلُوا۟

and do

waʿamilū

ٱلصَّـٰلِحَـٰتِ

righteous (deeds)

l-ṣāliḥāti

لَنُكَفِّرَنَّ

surely, We will remove

lanukaffiranna

عَنْهُمْ

from them

ʿanhum

سَيِّـَٔاتِهِمْ

their evil deeds

sayyiātihim

وَلَنَجْزِيَنَّهُمْ

and We will surely reward them

walanajziyannahum

أَحْسَنَ

(the) best

aḥsana

ٱلَّذِى

(of) what

alladhī

كَانُوا۟

they used

kānū

يَعْمَلُونَ

(to) do

yaʿmalūna

٧

And those who believe and do righteous deeds - We will surely remove from them their misdeeds and will surely reward them according to the best of what they used to do.

— Saheeh International

وَوَصَّيْنَا

And We have enjoined

wawaṣṣaynā

ٱلْإِنسَـٰنَ

(on) man

l-insāna

بِوَٰلِدَيْهِ

goodness to his parents

biwālidayhi

حُسْنًۭا ۖ

goodness to his parents

ḥus'nan

وَإِن

but if

wa-in

جَـٰهَدَاكَ

they both strive against you

jāhadāka

لِتُشْرِكَ

to make you associate

litush'rika

بِى

with Me

مَا

what

لَيْسَ

not

laysa

لَكَ

you have

laka

بِهِۦ

of it

bihi

عِلْمٌۭ

any knowledge

ʿil'mun

فَلَا

then (do) not

falā

تُطِعْهُمَآ ۚ

obey both of them

tuṭiʿ'humā

إِلَىَّ

To Me

ilayya

مَرْجِعُكُمْ

(is) your return

marjiʿukum

فَأُنَبِّئُكُم

and I will inform you

fa-unabbi-ukum

بِمَا

about what

bimā

كُنتُمْ

you used

kuntum

تَعْمَلُونَ

(to) do

taʿmalūna

٨

And We have enjoined upon man goodness to parents. But if they endeavor to make you associate with Me that of which you have no knowledge,1 do not obey them. To Me is your return, and I will inform you about what you used to do.

— Saheeh International

وَٱلَّذِينَ

And those who

wa-alladhīna

ءَامَنُوا۟

believe

āmanū

وَعَمِلُوا۟

and do

waʿamilū

ٱلصَّـٰلِحَـٰتِ

righteous deeds

l-ṣāliḥāti

لَنُدْخِلَنَّهُمْ

We will surely admit them

lanud'khilannahum

فِى

among

ٱلصَّـٰلِحِينَ

the righteous

l-ṣāliḥīna

٩

And those who believe and do righteous deeds - We will surely admit them among the righteous [into Paradise].

— Saheeh International

وَمِنَ

And of

wamina

ٱلنَّاسِ

the people

l-nāsi

مَن

(is he) who

man

يَقُولُ

says

yaqūlu

ءَامَنَّا

We believe

āmannā

بِٱللَّهِ

in Allah

bil-lahi

فَإِذَآ

But when

fa-idhā

أُوذِىَ

he is harmed

ūdhiya

فِى

in

ٱللَّهِ

(the Way of) Allah

l-lahi

جَعَلَ

he considers

jaʿala

فِتْنَةَ

(the) trial

fit'nata

ٱلنَّاسِ

(of) the people

l-nāsi

كَعَذَابِ

as (the) punishment

kaʿadhābi

ٱللَّهِ

(of) Allah

l-lahi

وَلَئِن

But if

wala-in

جَآءَ

comes

jāa

نَصْرٌۭ

victory

naṣrun

مِّن

from

min

رَّبِّكَ

your Lord

rabbika

لَيَقُولُنَّ

surely they say

layaqūlunna

إِنَّا

Indeed, we

innā

كُنَّا

were

kunnā

مَعَكُمْ ۚ

with you

maʿakum

أَوَلَيْسَ

Is not

awalaysa

ٱللَّهُ

Allah

l-lahu

بِأَعْلَمَ

most knowing

bi-aʿlama

بِمَا

of what

bimā

فِى

(is) in

صُدُورِ

(the) breasts

ṣudūri

ٱلْعَـٰلَمِينَ

(of) the worlds

l-ʿālamīna

١٠

And of the people are some who say, "We believe in Allāh," but when one [of them] is harmed for [the cause of] Allāh, he considers the trial [i.e., harm] of the people as [if it were] the punishment of Allāh. But if victory comes from your Lord, they say, "Indeed, We were with you." Is not Allāh most knowing of what is within the breasts of the worlds [i.e., all creatures]?

— Saheeh International

وَلَيَعْلَمَنَّ

And Allah will surely make evident

walayaʿlamanna

ٱللَّهُ

And Allah will surely make evident

l-lahu

ٱلَّذِينَ

those who

alladhīna

ءَامَنُوا۟

believe

āmanū

وَلَيَعْلَمَنَّ

And He will surely make evident

walayaʿlamanna

ٱلْمُنَـٰفِقِينَ

the hypocrites

l-munāfiqīna

١١

And Allāh will surely make evident those who believe, and He will surely make evident the hypocrites.

— Saheeh International

وَقَالَ

And said

waqāla

ٱلَّذِينَ

those who

alladhīna

كَفَرُوا۟

disbelieve

kafarū

لِلَّذِينَ

to those who

lilladhīna

ءَامَنُوا۟

believe

āmanū

ٱتَّبِعُوا۟

Follow

ittabiʿū

سَبِيلَنَا

our way

sabīlanā

وَلْنَحْمِلْ

and we will carry

walnaḥmil

خَطَـٰيَـٰكُمْ

your sins

khaṭāyākum

وَمَا

But not

wamā

هُم

they

hum

بِحَـٰمِلِينَ

(are) going to carry

biḥāmilīna

مِنْ

of

min

خَطَـٰيَـٰهُم

their sins

khaṭāyāhum

مِّن

any

min

شَىْءٍ ۖ

thing

shayin

إِنَّهُمْ

Indeed, they

innahum

لَكَـٰذِبُونَ

(are) surely liars

lakādhibūna

١٢

And those who disbelieve say to those who believe, "Follow our way, and we will carry your sins."1 But they will not carry anything of their sins. Indeed, they are liars.

— Saheeh International

وَلَيَحْمِلُنَّ

But surely they will carry

walayaḥmilunna

أَثْقَالَهُمْ

their burdens

athqālahum

وَأَثْقَالًۭا

and burdens

wa-athqālan

مَّعَ

with

maʿa

أَثْقَالِهِمْ ۖ

their burdens

athqālihim

وَلَيُسْـَٔلُنَّ

and surely they will be questioned

walayus'alunna

يَوْمَ

(on the) Day

yawma

ٱلْقِيَـٰمَةِ

(of) the Resurrection

l-qiyāmati

عَمَّا

about what

ʿammā

كَانُوا۟

they used

kānū

يَفْتَرُونَ

(to) invent

yaftarūna

١٣

But they will surely carry their [own] burdens and [other] burdens along with their burdens,1 and they will surely be questioned on the Day of Resurrection about what they used to invent.

— Saheeh International

وَلَقَدْ

And verily

walaqad

أَرْسَلْنَا

We sent

arsalnā

نُوحًا

Nuh

nūḥan

إِلَىٰ

to

ilā

قَوْمِهِۦ

his people

qawmihi

فَلَبِثَ

and he remained

falabitha

فِيهِمْ

among them

fīhim

أَلْفَ

a thousand

alfa

سَنَةٍ

year(s)

sanatin

إِلَّا

save

illā

خَمْسِينَ

fifty

khamsīna

عَامًۭا

year(s)

ʿāman

فَأَخَذَهُمُ

then seized them

fa-akhadhahumu

ٱلطُّوفَانُ

the flood

l-ṭūfānu

وَهُمْ

while they

wahum

ظَـٰلِمُونَ

(were) wrongdoers

ẓālimūna

١٤

And We certainly sent Noah to his people, and he remained among them a thousand years minus fifty years, and the flood seized them while they were wrongdoers.

— Saheeh International

فَأَنجَيْنَـٰهُ

But We saved him

fa-anjaynāhu

وَأَصْحَـٰبَ

and (the) people

wa-aṣḥāba

ٱلسَّفِينَةِ

(of) the ship

l-safīnati

وَجَعَلْنَـٰهَآ

and We made it

wajaʿalnāhā

ءَايَةًۭ

a Sign

āyatan

لِّلْعَـٰلَمِينَ

for the worlds

lil'ʿālamīna

١٥

But We saved him and the companions of the ship, and We made it1 a sign for the worlds.

— Saheeh International

وَإِبْرَٰهِيمَ

And Ibrahim

wa-ib'rāhīma

إِذْ

when

idh

قَالَ

he said

qāla

لِقَوْمِهِ

to his people

liqawmihi

ٱعْبُدُوا۟

Worship

uʿ'budū

ٱللَّهَ

Allah

l-laha

وَٱتَّقُوهُ ۖ

and fear Him

wa-ittaqūhu

ذَٰلِكُمْ

That

dhālikum

خَيْرٌۭ

(is) better

khayrun

لَّكُمْ

for you

lakum

إِن

if

in

كُنتُمْ

you

kuntum

تَعْلَمُونَ

know

taʿlamūna

١٦

And [We sent] Abraham, when he said to his people, "Worship Allāh and fear Him. That is best for you, if you should know.

— Saheeh International

إِنَّمَا

Only

innamā

تَعْبُدُونَ

you worship

taʿbudūna

مِن

besides

min

دُونِ

besides

dūni

ٱللَّهِ

Allah

l-lahi

أَوْثَـٰنًۭا

idols

awthānan

وَتَخْلُقُونَ

and you create

watakhluqūna

إِفْكًا ۚ

falsehood

if'kan

إِنَّ

Indeed

inna

ٱلَّذِينَ

those whom

alladhīna

تَعْبُدُونَ

you worship

taʿbudūna

مِن

besides

min

دُونِ

besides

dūni

ٱللَّهِ

Allah

l-lahi

لَا

(do) not

يَمْلِكُونَ

possess

yamlikūna

لَكُمْ

for you

lakum

رِزْقًۭا

any provision

riz'qan

فَٱبْتَغُوا۟

So seek

fa-ib'taghū

عِندَ

from

ʿinda

ٱللَّهِ

Allah

l-lahi

ٱلرِّزْقَ

the provision

l-riz'qa

وَٱعْبُدُوهُ

and worship Him

wa-uʿ'budūhu

وَٱشْكُرُوا۟

and be grateful

wa-ush'kurū

لَهُۥٓ ۖ

to Him

lahu

إِلَيْهِ

To Him

ilayhi

تُرْجَعُونَ

you will be returned

tur'jaʿūna

١٧

You only worship, besides Allāh, idols, and you produce a falsehood. Indeed, those you worship besides Allāh do not possess for you [the power of] provision. So seek from Allāh provision and worship Him and be grateful to Him. To Him you will be returned."

— Saheeh International

وَإِن

And if

wa-in

تُكَذِّبُوا۟

you deny

tukadhibū

فَقَدْ

then verily

faqad

كَذَّبَ

denied

kadhaba

أُمَمٌۭ

(the) nations

umamun

مِّن

before you

min

قَبْلِكُمْ ۖ

before you

qablikum

وَمَا

And not

wamā

عَلَى

(is) on

ʿalā

ٱلرَّسُولِ

the Messenger

l-rasūli

إِلَّا

except

illā

ٱلْبَلَـٰغُ

the conveyance

l-balāghu

ٱلْمُبِينُ

clear

l-mubīnu

١٨

And if you [people] deny [the message] - already nations before you have denied. And there is not upon the Messenger except [the duty of] clear notification.1

— Saheeh International

أَوَلَمْ

Do not

awalam

يَرَوْا۟

they see

yaraw

كَيْفَ

how

kayfa

يُبْدِئُ

Allah originates

yub'di-u

ٱللَّهُ

Allah originates

l-lahu

ٱلْخَلْقَ

the creation

l-khalqa

ثُمَّ

then

thumma

يُعِيدُهُۥٓ ۚ

repeats it

yuʿīduhu

إِنَّ

Indeed

inna

ذَٰلِكَ

that

dhālika

عَلَى

for

ʿalā

ٱللَّهِ

Allah

l-lahi

يَسِيرٌۭ

(is) easy

yasīrun

١٩

Have they not considered how Allāh begins creation and then repeats it? Indeed that, for Allāh, is easy.

— Saheeh International

قُلْ

Say

qul

سِيرُوا۟

Travel

sīrū

فِى

in

ٱلْأَرْضِ

the earth

l-arḍi

فَٱنظُرُوا۟

and see

fa-unẓurū

كَيْفَ

how

kayfa

بَدَأَ

He originated

bada-a

ٱلْخَلْقَ ۚ

the creation

l-khalqa

ثُمَّ

Then

thumma

ٱللَّهُ

Allah

l-lahu

يُنشِئُ

will produce

yunshi-u

ٱلنَّشْأَةَ

the creation

l-nashata

ٱلْـَٔاخِرَةَ ۚ

the last

l-ākhirata

إِنَّ

Indeed

inna

ٱللَّهَ

Allah

l-laha

عَلَىٰ

on

ʿalā

كُلِّ

every

kulli

شَىْءٍۢ

thing

shayin

قَدِيرٌۭ

(is) All-Powerful

qadīrun

٢٠

Say, [O Muḥammad], "Travel through the land and observe how He began creation. Then Allāh will produce the final creation [i.e., development]. Indeed Allāh, over all things, is competent."

— Saheeh International

يُعَذِّبُ

He punishes

yuʿadhibu

مَن

whom

man

يَشَآءُ

He wills

yashāu

وَيَرْحَمُ

and has mercy

wayarḥamu

مَن

(on) whom

man

يَشَآءُ ۖ

He wills

yashāu

وَإِلَيْهِ

and to Him

wa-ilayhi

تُقْلَبُونَ

you will be returned

tuq'labūna

٢١

He punishes whom He wills and has mercy upon whom He wills, and to Him you will be returned.

— Saheeh International

وَمَآ

And not

wamā

أَنتُم

you

antum

بِمُعْجِزِينَ

can escape

bimuʿ'jizīna

فِى

in

ٱلْأَرْضِ

the earth

l-arḍi

وَلَا

and not

walā

فِى

in

ٱلسَّمَآءِ ۖ

the heaven

l-samāi

وَمَا

And not

wamā

لَكُم

for you

lakum

مِّن

besides

min

دُونِ

besides

dūni

ٱللَّهِ

Allah

l-lahi

مِن

any

min

وَلِىٍّۢ

protector

waliyyin

وَلَا

and not

walā

نَصِيرٍۢ

a helper

naṣīrin

٢٢

And you will not cause failure [to Allāh] upon the earth or in the heaven. And you have not other than Allāh any protector or any helper.

— Saheeh International

وَٱلَّذِينَ

And those who

wa-alladhīna

كَفَرُوا۟

disbelieve

kafarū

بِـَٔايَـٰتِ

in (the) Signs

biāyāti

ٱللَّهِ

(of) Allah

l-lahi

وَلِقَآئِهِۦٓ

and (the) meeting (with) Him

waliqāihi

أُو۟لَـٰٓئِكَ

those

ulāika

يَئِسُوا۟

(have) despaired

ya-isū

مِن

of

min

رَّحْمَتِى

My Mercy

raḥmatī

وَأُو۟لَـٰٓئِكَ

And those

wa-ulāika

لَهُمْ

for them

lahum

عَذَابٌ

(is) a punishment

ʿadhābun

أَلِيمٌۭ

painful

alīmun

٢٣

And the ones who disbelieve in the signs of Allāh and the meeting with Him - those have despaired of My mercy, and they will have a painful punishment.

— Saheeh International

فَمَا

And not

famā

كَانَ

was

kāna

جَوَابَ

(the) answer

jawāba

قَوْمِهِۦٓ

(of) his people

qawmihi

إِلَّآ

except

illā

أَن

that

an

قَالُوا۟

they said

qālū

ٱقْتُلُوهُ

Kill him

uq'tulūhu

أَوْ

or

aw

حَرِّقُوهُ

burn him

ḥarriqūhu

فَأَنجَىٰهُ

But Allah saved him

fa-anjāhu

ٱللَّهُ

But Allah saved him

l-lahu

مِنَ

from

mina

ٱلنَّارِ ۚ

the fire

l-nāri

إِنَّ

Indeed

inna

فِى

in

ذَٰلِكَ

that

dhālika

لَـَٔايَـٰتٍۢ

surely (are) Signs

laāyātin

لِّقَوْمٍۢ

for a people

liqawmin

يُؤْمِنُونَ

who believe

yu'minūna

٢٤

And the answer of his [i.e., Abraham's] people was not but that they said, "Kill him or burn him," but Allāh saved him from the fire. Indeed in that are signs for a people who believe.

— Saheeh International

وَقَالَ

And he said

waqāla

إِنَّمَا

Only

innamā

ٱتَّخَذْتُم

you have taken

ittakhadhtum

مِّن

besides

min

دُونِ

besides

dūni

ٱللَّهِ

Allah

l-lahi

أَوْثَـٰنًۭا

idols

awthānan

مَّوَدَّةَ

(out of) love

mawaddata

بَيْنِكُمْ

among you

baynikum

فِى

in

ٱلْحَيَوٰةِ

the life

l-ḥayati

ٱلدُّنْيَا ۖ

(of) the world

l-dun'yā

ثُمَّ

Then

thumma

يَوْمَ

(on the) Day

yawma

ٱلْقِيَـٰمَةِ

(of) the Resurrection

l-qiyāmati

يَكْفُرُ

you will deny

yakfuru

بَعْضُكُم

one another

baʿḍukum

بِبَعْضٍۢ

one another

bibaʿḍin

وَيَلْعَنُ

and curse

wayalʿanu

بَعْضُكُم

one another

baʿḍukum

بَعْضًۭا

one another

baʿḍan

وَمَأْوَىٰكُمُ

and your abode

wamawākumu

ٱلنَّارُ

(will be) the Fire

l-nāru

وَمَا

and not

wamā

لَكُم

for you

lakum

مِّن

any

min

نَّـٰصِرِينَ

helpers

nāṣirīna

٢٥

And [Abraham] said, "You have only taken, other than Allāh, idols as [a bond of] affection among you in worldly life. Then on the Day of Resurrection you will deny one another and curse one another, and your refuge will be the Fire, and you will not have any helpers."

— Saheeh International

۞ فَـَٔامَنَ

And believed

faāmana

لَهُۥ

[in] him

lahu

لُوطٌۭ ۘ

Lut

lūṭun

وَقَالَ

and he said

waqāla

إِنِّى

Indeed I (am)

innī

مُهَاجِرٌ

emigrating

muhājirun

إِلَىٰ

to

ilā

رَبِّىٓ ۖ

my Lord

rabbī

إِنَّهُۥ

Indeed, He

innahu

هُوَ

[He] (is)

huwa

ٱلْعَزِيزُ

the All-Mighty

l-ʿazīzu

ٱلْحَكِيمُ

the All-Wise

l-ḥakīmu

٢٦

And Lot believed him. [Abraham] said, "Indeed, I will emigrate to [the service of] my Lord. Indeed, He is the Exalted in Might, the Wise."

— Saheeh International

وَوَهَبْنَا

And We granted

wawahabnā

لَهُۥٓ

to him

lahu

إِسْحَـٰقَ

Isaac

is'ḥāqa

وَيَعْقُوبَ

and Yaqub

wayaʿqūba

وَجَعَلْنَا

and We placed

wajaʿalnā

فِى

in

ذُرِّيَّتِهِ

his offsprings

dhurriyyatihi

ٱلنُّبُوَّةَ

the Prophethood

l-nubuwata

وَٱلْكِتَـٰبَ

and the Book

wal-kitāba

وَءَاتَيْنَـٰهُ

And We gave him

waātaynāhu

أَجْرَهُۥ

his reward

ajrahu

فِى

in

ٱلدُّنْيَا ۖ

the world

l-dun'yā

وَإِنَّهُۥ

And indeed, he

wa-innahu

فِى

in

ٱلْـَٔاخِرَةِ

the Hereafter

l-ākhirati

لَمِنَ

(is) surely, among

lamina

ٱلصَّـٰلِحِينَ

the righteous

l-ṣāliḥīna

٢٧

And We gave to him Isaac and Jacob and placed in his descendants prophethood and scripture. And We gave him his reward in this world, and indeed, he is in the Hereafter among the righteous.

— Saheeh International

وَلُوطًا

And Lut

walūṭan

إِذْ

when

idh

قَالَ

he said

qāla

لِقَوْمِهِۦٓ

to his people

liqawmihi

إِنَّكُمْ

Indeed, you

innakum

لَتَأْتُونَ

commit

latatūna

ٱلْفَـٰحِشَةَ

the immorality

l-fāḥishata

مَا

not

سَبَقَكُم

has preceded you

sabaqakum

بِهَا

with it

bihā

مِنْ

any

min

أَحَدٍۢ

one

aḥadin

مِّنَ

from

mina

ٱلْعَـٰلَمِينَ

the worlds

l-ʿālamīna

٢٨

And [mention] Lot, when he said to his people, "Indeed, you commit such immorality as no one has preceded you with from among the worlds.

— Saheeh International

أَئِنَّكُمْ

Indeed, you

a-innakum

لَتَأْتُونَ

approach

latatūna

ٱلرِّجَالَ

the men

l-rijāla

وَتَقْطَعُونَ

and you cut off

wataqṭaʿūna

ٱلسَّبِيلَ

the road

l-sabīla

وَتَأْتُونَ

and commit

watatūna

فِى

in

نَادِيكُمُ

your meetings

nādīkumu

ٱلْمُنكَرَ ۖ

evil

l-munkara

فَمَا

And not

famā

كَانَ

was

kāna

جَوَابَ

(the) answer

jawāba

قَوْمِهِۦٓ

(of) his people

qawmihi

إِلَّآ

except

illā

أَن

that

an

قَالُوا۟

they said

qālū

ٱئْتِنَا

Bring upon us

i'tinā

بِعَذَابِ

(the) punishment

biʿadhābi

ٱللَّهِ

(of) Allah

l-lahi

إِن

if

in

كُنتَ

you are

kunta

مِنَ

of

mina

ٱلصَّـٰدِقِينَ

the truthful

l-ṣādiqīna

٢٩

Indeed, you approach men and obstruct the road1 and commit in your meetings [every] evil." And the answer of his people was not but that they said, "Bring us the punishment of Allāh, if you should be of the truthful."

— Saheeh International

قَالَ

He said

qāla

رَبِّ

My Lord

rabbi

ٱنصُرْنِى

Help me

unṣur'nī

عَلَى

against

ʿalā

ٱلْقَوْمِ

the people

l-qawmi

ٱلْمُفْسِدِينَ

the corrupters

l-muf'sidīna

٣٠

He said, "My Lord, support me against the corrupting people."

— Saheeh International

وَلَمَّا

And when

walammā

جَآءَتْ

came

jāat

رُسُلُنَآ

Our messengers

rusulunā

إِبْرَٰهِيمَ

(to) Ibrahim

ib'rāhīma

بِٱلْبُشْرَىٰ

with the glad tidings

bil-bush'rā

قَالُوٓا۟

they said

qālū

إِنَّا

Indeed, we

innā

مُهْلِكُوٓا۟

(are) going to destroy

muh'likū

أَهْلِ

(the) people

ahli

هَـٰذِهِ

(of) this

hādhihi

ٱلْقَرْيَةِ ۖ

town

l-qaryati

إِنَّ

Indeed

inna

أَهْلَهَا

its people

ahlahā

كَانُوا۟

are

kānū

ظَـٰلِمِينَ

wrongdoers

ẓālimīna

٣١

And when Our messengers [i.e., angels] came to Abraham with the good tidings,1 they said, "Indeed, we will destroy the people of that [i.e., Lot's] city. Indeed, its people have been wrongdoers."

— Saheeh International

قَالَ

He said

qāla

إِنَّ

Indeed

inna

فِيهَا

in it

fīhā

لُوطًۭا ۚ

(is) Lut

lūṭan

قَالُوا۟

They said

qālū

نَحْنُ

We

naḥnu

أَعْلَمُ

know better

aʿlamu

بِمَن

who

biman

فِيهَا ۖ

(is) in it

fīhā

لَنُنَجِّيَنَّهُۥ

We will surely save him

lanunajjiyannahu

وَأَهْلَهُۥٓ

and his family

wa-ahlahu

إِلَّا

except

illā

ٱمْرَأَتَهُۥ

his wife

im'ra-atahu

كَانَتْ

She

kānat

مِنَ

(is) of

mina

ٱلْغَـٰبِرِينَ

those who remain behind

l-ghābirīna

٣٢

[Abraham] said, "Indeed, within it is Lot." They said, "We are more knowing of who is within it. We will surely save him and his family, except his wife. She is to be of those who remain behind."

— Saheeh International

وَلَمَّآ

And when

walammā

أَن

[that]

an

جَآءَتْ

came

jāat

رُسُلُنَا

Our messengers

rusulunā

لُوطًۭا

(to) Lut

lūṭan

سِىٓءَ

he was distressed

sīa

بِهِمْ

for them

bihim

وَضَاقَ

and felt straitened

waḍāqa

بِهِمْ

for them

bihim

ذَرْعًۭا

(and) uneasy

dharʿan

وَقَالُوا۟

And they said

waqālū

لَا

(Do) not

تَخَفْ

fear

takhaf

وَلَا

and (do) not

walā

تَحْزَنْ ۖ

grieve

taḥzan

إِنَّا

Indeed, we

innā

مُنَجُّوكَ

(will) save you

munajjūka

وَأَهْلَكَ

and your family

wa-ahlaka

إِلَّا

except

illā

ٱمْرَأَتَكَ

your wife

im'ra-ataka

كَانَتْ

She

kānat

مِنَ

(is) of

mina

ٱلْغَـٰبِرِينَ

those who remain behind

l-ghābirīna

٣٣

And when Our messengers [i.e., angels] came to Lot, he was distressed for them and felt for them great discomfort.1 They said, "Fear not, nor grieve. Indeed, we will save you and your family, except your wife; she is to be of those who remain behind.

— Saheeh International

إِنَّا

Indeed, we

innā

مُنزِلُونَ

(will) bring down

munzilūna

عَلَىٰٓ

on

ʿalā

أَهْلِ

(the) people

ahli

هَـٰذِهِ

(of) this

hādhihi

ٱلْقَرْيَةِ

town

l-qaryati

رِجْزًۭا

a punishment

rij'zan

مِّنَ

from

mina

ٱلسَّمَآءِ

(the) sky

l-samāi

بِمَا

because

bimā

كَانُوا۟

they have been

kānū

يَفْسُقُونَ

defiantly disobedient

yafsuqūna

٣٤

Indeed, we will bring down on the people of this city punishment from the sky because they have been defiantly disobedient."

— Saheeh International

وَلَقَد

And verily

walaqad

تَّرَكْنَا

We have left

taraknā

مِنْهَآ

about it

min'hā

ءَايَةًۢ

a sign

āyatan

بَيِّنَةًۭ

(as) evidence

bayyinatan

لِّقَوْمٍۢ

for a people

liqawmin

يَعْقِلُونَ

who use reason

yaʿqilūna

٣٥

And We have certainly left of it a sign as clear evidence for a people who use reason.

— Saheeh International

وَإِلَىٰ

And to

wa-ilā

مَدْيَنَ

Madyan

madyana

أَخَاهُمْ

their brother

akhāhum

شُعَيْبًۭا

Shuaib

shuʿayban

فَقَالَ

And he said

faqāla

يَـٰقَوْمِ

O my people

yāqawmi

ٱعْبُدُوا۟

Worship

uʿ'budū

ٱللَّهَ

Allah

l-laha

وَٱرْجُوا۟

and expect

wa-ir'jū

ٱلْيَوْمَ

the Day

l-yawma

ٱلْـَٔاخِرَ

the Last

l-ākhira

وَلَا

and (do) not

walā

تَعْثَوْا۟

commit evil

taʿthaw

فِى

in

ٱلْأَرْضِ

the earth

l-arḍi

مُفْسِدِينَ

(as) corrupters

muf'sidīna

٣٦

And to Madyan [We sent] their brother Shuʿayb, and he said, "O my people, worship Allāh and expect the Last Day and do not commit abuse on the earth, spreading corruption."

— Saheeh International

فَكَذَّبُوهُ

But they denied him

fakadhabūhu

فَأَخَذَتْهُمُ

so seized them

fa-akhadhathumu

ٱلرَّجْفَةُ

the earthquake

l-rajfatu

فَأَصْبَحُوا۟

and they became

fa-aṣbaḥū

فِى

in

دَارِهِمْ

their home

dārihim

جَـٰثِمِينَ

fallen prone

jāthimīna

٣٧

But they denied him, so the earthquake seized them, and they became within their home [corpses] fallen prone.

— Saheeh International

وَعَادًۭا

And Aad

waʿādan

وَثَمُودَا۟

and Thamud

wathamūdā

وَقَد

and verily

waqad

تَّبَيَّنَ

(has) become clear

tabayyana

لَكُم

to you

lakum

مِّن

from

min

مَّسَـٰكِنِهِمْ ۖ

their dwellings

masākinihim

وَزَيَّنَ

And made fair-seeming

wazayyana

لَهُمُ

to them

lahumu

ٱلشَّيْطَـٰنُ

the Shaitaan

l-shayṭānu

أَعْمَـٰلَهُمْ

their deeds

aʿmālahum

فَصَدَّهُمْ

and averted them

faṣaddahum

عَنِ

from

ʿani

ٱلسَّبِيلِ

the Way

l-sabīli

وَكَانُوا۟

though they were

wakānū

مُسْتَبْصِرِينَ

endowed with insight

mus'tabṣirīna

٣٨

And [We destroyed] ʿAad and Thamūd, and it has become clear to you from their [ruined] dwellings. And Satan had made pleasing to them their deeds and averted them from the path, and they were endowed with perception.

— Saheeh International

وَقَـٰرُونَ

And Qarun

waqārūna

وَفِرْعَوْنَ

and Firaun

wafir'ʿawna

وَهَـٰمَـٰنَ ۖ

and Haman

wahāmāna

وَلَقَدْ

And certainly

walaqad

جَآءَهُم

came to them

jāahum

مُّوسَىٰ

Musa

mūsā

بِٱلْبَيِّنَـٰتِ

with clear evidences

bil-bayināti

فَٱسْتَكْبَرُوا۟

but they were arrogant

fa-is'takbarū

فِى

in

ٱلْأَرْضِ

the earth

l-arḍi

وَمَا

and not

wamā

كَانُوا۟

they could

kānū

سَـٰبِقِينَ

outstrip Us

sābiqīna

٣٩

And [We destroyed] Qārūn and Pharaoh and Hāmān. And Moses had already come to them with clear evidences, and they were arrogant in the land, but they were not outrunners [of Our punishment].

— Saheeh International

فَكُلًّا

So each

fakullan

أَخَذْنَا

We seized

akhadhnā

بِذَنۢبِهِۦ ۖ

for his sin

bidhanbihi

فَمِنْهُم

Then of them

famin'hum

مَّنْ

(was he) who

man

أَرْسَلْنَا

We sent

arsalnā

عَلَيْهِ

on him

ʿalayhi

حَاصِبًۭا

a violent storm

ḥāṣiban

وَمِنْهُم

and of them

wamin'hum

مَّنْ

(was he) who

man

أَخَذَتْهُ

seized him

akhadhathu

ٱلصَّيْحَةُ

the awful cry

l-ṣayḥatu

وَمِنْهُم

and of them

wamin'hum

مَّنْ

(was he) who

man

خَسَفْنَا

We caused to swallow

khasafnā

بِهِ

him

bihi

ٱلْأَرْضَ

the earth

l-arḍa

وَمِنْهُم

and of them

wamin'hum

مَّنْ

(was he) who

man

أَغْرَقْنَا ۚ

We drowned

aghraqnā

وَمَا

And not

wamā

كَانَ

was

kāna

ٱللَّهُ

Allah

l-lahu

لِيَظْلِمَهُمْ

to wrong them

liyaẓlimahum

وَلَـٰكِن

but

walākin

كَانُوٓا۟

they were

kānū

أَنفُسَهُمْ

themselves

anfusahum

يَظْلِمُونَ

doing wrong

yaẓlimūna

٤٠

So each We seized for his sin; and among them were those upon whom We sent a storm of stones, and among them were those who were seized by the blast [from the sky], and among them were those whom We caused the earth to swallow, and among them were those whom We drowned. And Allāh would not have wronged them, but it was they who were wronging themselves.

— Saheeh International

مَثَلُ

(The) example

mathalu

ٱلَّذِينَ

(of) those who

alladhīna

ٱتَّخَذُوا۟

take

ittakhadhū

مِن

besides

min

دُونِ

besides

dūni

ٱللَّهِ

Allah

l-lahi

أَوْلِيَآءَ

protectors

awliyāa

كَمَثَلِ

(is) like

kamathali

ٱلْعَنكَبُوتِ

the spider

l-ʿankabūti

ٱتَّخَذَتْ

who takes

ittakhadhat

بَيْتًۭا ۖ

a house

baytan

وَإِنَّ

And indeed

wa-inna

أَوْهَنَ

the weakest

awhana

ٱلْبُيُوتِ

(of) houses

l-buyūti

لَبَيْتُ

(is) surely (the) house

labaytu

ٱلْعَنكَبُوتِ ۖ

(of) the spider

l-ʿankabūti

لَوْ

if (only)

law

كَانُوا۟

they

kānū

يَعْلَمُونَ

know

yaʿlamūna

٤١

The example of those who take allies other than Allāh is like that of the spider who takes [i.e., constructs] a home. And indeed, the weakest of homes is the home of the spider, if they only knew.

— Saheeh International

إِنَّ

Indeed

inna

ٱللَّهَ

Allah

l-laha

يَعْلَمُ

knows

yaʿlamu

مَا

what

يَدْعُونَ

they invoke

yadʿūna

مِن

besides Him

min

دُونِهِۦ

besides Him

dūnihi

مِن

any

min

شَىْءٍۢ ۚ

thing

shayin

وَهُوَ

And He

wahuwa

ٱلْعَزِيزُ

(is) the All-Mighty

l-ʿazīzu

ٱلْحَكِيمُ

the All-Wise

l-ḥakīmu

٤٢

Indeed, Allāh knows whatever thing they call upon1 other than Him. And He is the Exalted in Might, the Wise.

— Saheeh International

وَتِلْكَ

And these

watil'ka

ٱلْأَمْثَـٰلُ

examples

l-amthālu

نَضْرِبُهَا

We set forth

naḍribuhā

لِلنَّاسِ ۖ

to mankind

lilnnāsi

وَمَا

but not

wamā

يَعْقِلُهَآ

will understand them

yaʿqiluhā

إِلَّا

except

illā

ٱلْعَـٰلِمُونَ

those of knowledge

l-ʿālimūna

٤٣

And these examples We present to the people, but none will understand them except those of knowledge.

— Saheeh International

خَلَقَ

Allah created

khalaqa

ٱللَّهُ

Allah created

l-lahu

ٱلسَّمَـٰوَٰتِ

the heavens

l-samāwāti

وَٱلْأَرْضَ

and the earth

wal-arḍa

بِٱلْحَقِّ ۚ

in truth

bil-ḥaqi

إِنَّ

Indeed

inna

فِى

in

ذَٰلِكَ

that

dhālika

لَـَٔايَةًۭ

(is) surely a Sign

laāyatan

لِّلْمُؤْمِنِينَ

for the believers

lil'mu'minīna

٤٤

Allāh created the heavens and the earth in truth. Indeed in that is a sign for the believers.

— Saheeh International

ٱتْلُ

Recite

ut'lu

مَآ

what

أُوحِىَ

has been revealed

ūḥiya

إِلَيْكَ

to you

ilayka

مِنَ

of

mina

ٱلْكِتَـٰبِ

the Book

l-kitābi

وَأَقِمِ

and establish

wa-aqimi

ٱلصَّلَوٰةَ ۖ

the prayer

l-ṣalata

إِنَّ

Indeed

inna

ٱلصَّلَوٰةَ

the prayer

l-ṣalata

تَنْهَىٰ

prevents

tanhā

عَنِ

from

ʿani

ٱلْفَحْشَآءِ

the immorality

l-faḥshāi

وَٱلْمُنكَرِ ۗ

and evil deeds

wal-munkari

وَلَذِكْرُ

and surely (the) remembrance

waladhik'ru

ٱللَّهِ

(of) Allah

l-lahi

أَكْبَرُ ۗ

(is) greatest

akbaru

وَٱللَّهُ

And Allah

wal-lahu

يَعْلَمُ

knows

yaʿlamu

مَا

what

تَصْنَعُونَ

you do

taṣnaʿūna

٤٥

Recite, [O Muḥammad], what has been revealed to you of the Book and establish prayer. Indeed, prayer prohibits immorality and wrongdoing, and the remembrance of Allāh is greater. And Allāh knows that which you do.

— Saheeh International

۞ وَلَا

And (do) not

walā

تُجَـٰدِلُوٓا۟

argue

tujādilū

أَهْلَ

(with the) People of the Book

ahla

ٱلْكِتَـٰبِ

(with the) People of the Book

l-kitābi

إِلَّا

except

illā

بِٱلَّتِى

by which

bi-allatī

هِىَ

[it]

hiya

أَحْسَنُ

(is) best

aḥsanu

إِلَّا

except

illā

ٱلَّذِينَ

those who

alladhīna

ظَلَمُوا۟

(do) wrong

ẓalamū

مِنْهُمْ ۖ

among them

min'hum

وَقُولُوٓا۟

and say

waqūlū

ءَامَنَّا

We believe

āmannā

بِٱلَّذِىٓ

in that (which)

bi-alladhī

أُنزِلَ

has been revealed

unzila

إِلَيْنَا

to us

ilaynā

وَأُنزِلَ

and was revealed

wa-unzila

إِلَيْكُمْ

to you

ilaykum

وَإِلَـٰهُنَا

And our God

wa-ilāhunā

وَإِلَـٰهُكُمْ

and your God

wa-ilāhukum

وَٰحِدٌۭ

(is) One

wāḥidun

وَنَحْنُ

and we

wanaḥnu

لَهُۥ

to Him

lahu

مُسْلِمُونَ

submit

mus'limūna

٤٦

And do not argue with the People of the Scripture except in a way that is best, except for those who commit injustice among them, and say, "We believe in that which has been revealed to us and revealed to you. And our God and your God is one; and we are Muslims [in submission] to Him."

— Saheeh International

وَكَذَٰلِكَ

And thus

wakadhālika

أَنزَلْنَآ

We (have) revealed

anzalnā

إِلَيْكَ

to you

ilayka

ٱلْكِتَـٰبَ ۚ

the Book

l-kitāba

فَٱلَّذِينَ

So those

fa-alladhīna

ءَاتَيْنَـٰهُمُ

We gave [them]

ātaynāhumu

ٱلْكِتَـٰبَ

the Book

l-kitāba

يُؤْمِنُونَ

believe

yu'minūna

بِهِۦ ۖ

therein

bihi

وَمِنْ

And among

wamin

هَـٰٓؤُلَآءِ

these

hāulāi

مَن

(are some) who

man

يُؤْمِنُ

believe

yu'minu

بِهِۦ ۚ

therein

bihi

وَمَا

And none

wamā

يَجْحَدُ

reject

yajḥadu

بِـَٔايَـٰتِنَآ

Our Verses

biāyātinā

إِلَّا

except

illā

ٱلْكَـٰفِرُونَ

the disbelievers

l-kāfirūna

٤٧

And thus We have sent down to you the Book [i.e., the Qur’ān]. And those to whom We [previously] gave the Scripture believe in it. And among these [people of Makkah] are those who believe in it. And none reject Our verses except the disbelievers.

— Saheeh International

وَمَا

And not

wamā

كُنتَ

(did) you

kunta

تَتْلُوا۟

recite

tatlū

مِن

before it

min

قَبْلِهِۦ

before it

qablihi

مِن

any

min

كِتَـٰبٍۢ

Book

kitābin

وَلَا

and not

walā

تَخُطُّهُۥ

(did) you write it

takhuṭṭuhu

بِيَمِينِكَ ۖ

with your right hand

biyamīnika

إِذًۭا

in that case

idhan

لَّٱرْتَابَ

surely (would) have doubted

la-ir'tāba

ٱلْمُبْطِلُونَ

the falsifiers

l-mub'ṭilūna

٤٨

And you did not recite before it any scripture, nor did you inscribe one with your right hand. Then [i.e., otherwise] the falsifiers would have had [cause for] doubt.

— Saheeh International

بَلْ

Nay

bal

هُوَ

it

huwa

ءَايَـٰتٌۢ

(is) Verses

āyātun

بَيِّنَـٰتٌۭ

clear

bayyinātun

فِى

in

صُدُورِ

(the) breasts

ṣudūri

ٱلَّذِينَ

(of) those who

alladhīna

أُوتُوا۟

are given

ūtū

ٱلْعِلْمَ ۚ

the knowledge

l-ʿil'ma

وَمَا

And not

wamā

يَجْحَدُ

reject

yajḥadu

بِـَٔايَـٰتِنَآ

Our Verses

biāyātinā

إِلَّا

except

illā

ٱلظَّـٰلِمُونَ

the wrongdoers

l-ẓālimūna

٤٩

Rather, it [i.e., the Qur’ān] is distinct verses [preserved] within the breasts of those who have been given knowledge. And none reject Our verses except the wrongdoers.

— Saheeh International

وَقَالُوا۟

And they say

waqālū

لَوْلَآ

Why not

lawlā

أُنزِلَ

are sent down

unzila

عَلَيْهِ

to him

ʿalayhi

ءَايَـٰتٌۭ

(the) Signs

āyātun

مِّن

from

min

رَّبِّهِۦ ۖ

his Lord

rabbihi

قُلْ

Say

qul

إِنَّمَا

Only

innamā

ٱلْـَٔايَـٰتُ

the Signs

l-āyātu

عِندَ

(are) with

ʿinda

ٱللَّهِ

Allah

l-lahi

وَإِنَّمَآ

and only

wa-innamā

أَنَا۠

I (am)

anā

نَذِيرٌۭ

a warner

nadhīrun

مُّبِينٌ

clear

mubīnun

٥٠

But they say, "Why are not signs sent down to him from his Lord?" Say, "The signs are only with Allāh, and I am only a clear warner."

— Saheeh International

أَوَلَمْ

And is (it) not

awalam

يَكْفِهِمْ

sufficient for them

yakfihim

أَنَّآ

that We

annā

أَنزَلْنَا

revealed

anzalnā

عَلَيْكَ

to you

ʿalayka

ٱلْكِتَـٰبَ

the Book

l-kitāba

يُتْلَىٰ

(which) is recited

yut'lā

عَلَيْهِمْ ۚ

to them

ʿalayhim

إِنَّ

Indeed

inna

فِى

in

ذَٰلِكَ

that

dhālika

لَرَحْمَةًۭ

surely is a mercy

laraḥmatan

وَذِكْرَىٰ

and a reminder

wadhik'rā

لِقَوْمٍۢ

for a people

liqawmin

يُؤْمِنُونَ

who believe

yu'minūna

٥١

And is it not sufficient for them that We revealed to you the Book [i.e., the Qur’ān] which is recited to them? Indeed in that is a mercy and reminder for a people who believe.

— Saheeh International

قُلْ

Say

qul

كَفَىٰ

Sufficient is

kafā

بِٱللَّهِ

Allah

bil-lahi

بَيْنِى

between me

baynī

وَبَيْنَكُمْ

and between you

wabaynakum

شَهِيدًۭا ۖ

(as) a Witness

shahīdan

يَعْلَمُ

He knows

yaʿlamu

مَا

what

فِى

(is) in

ٱلسَّمَـٰوَٰتِ

the heavens

l-samāwāti

وَٱلْأَرْضِ ۗ

and the earth

wal-arḍi

وَٱلَّذِينَ

And those who

wa-alladhīna

ءَامَنُوا۟

believe

āmanū

بِٱلْبَـٰطِلِ

in [the] falsehood

bil-bāṭili

وَكَفَرُوا۟

and disbelieve

wakafarū

بِٱللَّهِ

in Allah

bil-lahi

أُو۟لَـٰٓئِكَ

those

ulāika

هُمُ

they

humu

ٱلْخَـٰسِرُونَ

(are) the losers

l-khāsirūna

٥٢

Say, "Sufficient is Allāh between me and you as Witness. He knows what is in the heavens and earth. And they who have believed in falsehood and disbelieved in Allāh - it is those who are the losers."

— Saheeh International

وَيَسْتَعْجِلُونَكَ

And they ask you to hasten

wayastaʿjilūnaka

بِٱلْعَذَابِ ۚ

[with] the punishment

bil-ʿadhābi

وَلَوْلَآ

And if not

walawlā

أَجَلٌۭ

(for) a term

ajalun

مُّسَمًّۭى

appointed

musamman

لَّجَآءَهُمُ

surely (would) have come to them

lajāahumu

ٱلْعَذَابُ

the punishment

l-ʿadhābu

وَلَيَأْتِيَنَّهُم

But it will surely come to them

walayatiyannahum

بَغْتَةًۭ

suddenly

baghtatan

وَهُمْ

while they

wahum

لَا

(do) not

يَشْعُرُونَ

perceive

yashʿurūna

٥٣

And they urge you to hasten the punishment. And if not for [the decree of] a specified term, punishment would have reached them. But it will surely come to them suddenly while they perceive not.

— Saheeh International

يَسْتَعْجِلُونَكَ

They ask you to hasten

yastaʿjilūnaka

بِٱلْعَذَابِ

the punishment

bil-ʿadhābi

وَإِنَّ

And indeed

wa-inna

جَهَنَّمَ

Hell

jahannama

لَمُحِيطَةٌۢ

will surely, encompass

lamuḥīṭatun

بِٱلْكَـٰفِرِينَ

the disbelievers

bil-kāfirīna

٥٤

They urge you to hasten the punishment. And indeed, Hell will be encompassing of the disbelievers

— Saheeh International

يَوْمَ

On (the) Day

yawma

يَغْشَىٰهُمُ

will cover them

yaghshāhumu

ٱلْعَذَابُ

the punishment

l-ʿadhābu

مِن

from

min

فَوْقِهِمْ

above them

fawqihim

وَمِن

and from

wamin

تَحْتِ

below

taḥti

أَرْجُلِهِمْ

their feet

arjulihim

وَيَقُولُ

and He will say

wayaqūlu

ذُوقُوا۟

Taste

dhūqū

مَا

what

كُنتُمْ

you used

kuntum

تَعْمَلُونَ

(to) do

taʿmalūna

٥٥

On the Day the punishment will cover them from above them and from below their feet and it is said, "Taste [the result of] what you used to do."

— Saheeh International

يَـٰعِبَادِىَ

O My servants

yāʿibādiya

ٱلَّذِينَ

who

alladhīna

ءَامَنُوٓا۟

believe

āmanū

إِنَّ

Indeed

inna

أَرْضِى

My earth

arḍī

وَٰسِعَةٌۭ

(is) spacious

wāsiʿatun

فَإِيَّـٰىَ

so only

fa-iyyāya

فَٱعْبُدُونِ

worship Me

fa-uʿ'budūni

٥٦

O My servants who have believed, indeed My earth is spacious, so worship only Me.

— Saheeh International

كُلُّ

Every

kullu

نَفْسٍۢ

soul

nafsin

ذَآئِقَةُ

(will) taste

dhāiqatu

ٱلْمَوْتِ ۖ

the death

l-mawti

ثُمَّ

Then

thumma

إِلَيْنَا

to Us

ilaynā

تُرْجَعُونَ

you will be returned

tur'jaʿūna

٥٧

Every soul will taste death. Then to Us will you be returned.

— Saheeh International

وَٱلَّذِينَ

And those who

wa-alladhīna

ءَامَنُوا۟

believe

āmanū

وَعَمِلُوا۟

and do

waʿamilū

ٱلصَّـٰلِحَـٰتِ

[the] righteous deeds

l-ṣāliḥāti

لَنُبَوِّئَنَّهُم

surely We will give them a place

lanubawwi-annahum

مِّنَ

in

mina

ٱلْجَنَّةِ

Paradise

l-janati

غُرَفًۭا

lofty dwellings

ghurafan

تَجْرِى

flow

tajrī

مِن

from

min

تَحْتِهَا

underneath it

taḥtihā

ٱلْأَنْهَـٰرُ

the rivers

l-anhāru

خَـٰلِدِينَ

will abide forever

khālidīna

فِيهَا ۚ

in it

fīhā

نِعْمَ

Excellent is

niʿ'ma

أَجْرُ

(the) reward

ajru

ٱلْعَـٰمِلِينَ

(of) the workers

l-ʿāmilīna

٥٨

And those who have believed and done righteous deeds - We will surely assign to them of Paradise [elevated] chambers beneath which rivers flow, wherein they abide eternally. Excellent is the reward of the [righteous] workers

— Saheeh International

ٱلَّذِينَ

Those who

alladhīna

صَبَرُوا۟

(are) patient

ṣabarū

وَعَلَىٰ

and upon

waʿalā

رَبِّهِمْ

their Lord

rabbihim

يَتَوَكَّلُونَ

put their trust

yatawakkalūna

٥٩

Who have been patient and upon their Lord rely.

— Saheeh International

وَكَأَيِّن

And how many

waka-ayyin

مِّن

of

min

دَآبَّةٍۢ

a creature

dābbatin

لَّا

(does) not

تَحْمِلُ

carry

taḥmilu

رِزْقَهَا

its provision

riz'qahā

ٱللَّهُ

Allah

l-lahu

يَرْزُقُهَا

provides (for) it

yarzuquhā

وَإِيَّاكُمْ ۚ

and (for) you

wa-iyyākum

وَهُوَ

And He

wahuwa

ٱلسَّمِيعُ

(is) the All-Hearer

l-samīʿu

ٱلْعَلِيمُ

the All-Knower

l-ʿalīmu

٦٠

And how many a creature carries not its [own] provision. Allāh provides for it and for you. And He is the Hearing, the Knowing.

— Saheeh International

وَلَئِن

And if

wala-in

سَأَلْتَهُم

you ask them

sa-altahum

مَّنْ

Who

man

خَلَقَ

created

khalaqa

ٱلسَّمَـٰوَٰتِ

the heavens

l-samāwāti

وَٱلْأَرْضَ

and the earth

wal-arḍa

وَسَخَّرَ

and subjected

wasakhara

ٱلشَّمْسَ

the sun

l-shamsa

وَٱلْقَمَرَ

and the moon

wal-qamara

لَيَقُولُنَّ

Surely they would say

layaqūlunna

ٱللَّهُ ۖ

Allah

l-lahu

فَأَنَّىٰ

Then how

fa-annā

يُؤْفَكُونَ

are they deluded

yu'fakūna

٦١

If you asked them, "Who created the heavens and earth and subjected the sun and the moon?" they would surely say, "Allāh." Then how are they deluded?

— Saheeh International

ٱللَّهُ

Allah

al-lahu

يَبْسُطُ

extends

yabsuṭu

ٱلرِّزْقَ

the provision

l-riz'qa

لِمَن

for whom

liman

يَشَآءُ

He wills

yashāu

مِنْ

of

min

عِبَادِهِۦ

His slaves

ʿibādihi

وَيَقْدِرُ

and restricts

wayaqdiru

لَهُۥٓ ۚ

for him

lahu

إِنَّ

Indeed

inna

ٱللَّهَ

Allah

l-laha

بِكُلِّ

of every

bikulli

شَىْءٍ

thing

shayin

عَلِيمٌۭ

(is) All-Knower

ʿalīmun

٦٢

Allāh extends provision for whom He wills of His servants and restricts for him. Indeed Allāh is, of all things, Knowing.

— Saheeh International

وَلَئِن

And if

wala-in

سَأَلْتَهُم

you ask them

sa-altahum

مَّن

Who

man

نَّزَّلَ

sends down

nazzala

مِنَ

from

mina

ٱلسَّمَآءِ

the sky

l-samāi

مَآءًۭ

water

māan

فَأَحْيَا

and gives life

fa-aḥyā

بِهِ

thereby

bihi

ٱلْأَرْضَ

(to) the earth

l-arḍa

مِنۢ

after

min

بَعْدِ

after

baʿdi

مَوْتِهَا

its death

mawtihā

لَيَقُولُنَّ

Surely, they would say

layaqūlunna

ٱللَّهُ ۚ

Allah

l-lahu

قُلِ

Say

quli

ٱلْحَمْدُ

All Praises

l-ḥamdu

لِلَّهِ ۚ

(are) for Allah

lillahi

بَلْ

But

bal

أَكْثَرُهُمْ

most of them

aktharuhum

لَا

(do) not

يَعْقِلُونَ

use reason

yaʿqilūna

٦٣

And if you asked them, "Who sends down rain from the sky and gives life thereby to the earth after its lifelessness?" they would surely say, "Allāh." Say, "Praise to Allāh"; but most of them do not reason.

— Saheeh International

وَمَا

And not

wamā

هَـٰذِهِ

(is) this

hādhihi

ٱلْحَيَوٰةُ

life

l-ḥayatu

ٱلدُّنْيَآ

(of) the world

l-dun'yā

إِلَّا

but

illā

لَهْوٌۭ

amusement

lahwun

وَلَعِبٌۭ ۚ

and play

walaʿibun

وَإِنَّ

And indeed

wa-inna

ٱلدَّارَ

the Home

l-dāra

ٱلْـَٔاخِرَةَ

(of) the Hereafter

l-ākhirata

لَهِىَ

surely, it

lahiya

ٱلْحَيَوَانُ ۚ

(is) the life

l-ḥayawānu

لَوْ

if only

law

كَانُوا۟

they

kānū

يَعْلَمُونَ

know

yaʿlamūna

٦٤

And this worldly life is not but diversion and amusement. And indeed, the home of the Hereafter - that is the [eternal] life, if only they knew.

— Saheeh International

فَإِذَا

And when

fa-idhā

رَكِبُوا۟

they embark

rakibū

فِى

[in]

ٱلْفُلْكِ

the ship

l-ful'ki

دَعَوُا۟

they call

daʿawū

ٱللَّهَ

Allah

l-laha

مُخْلِصِينَ

(being) sincere

mukh'liṣīna

لَهُ

to Him

lahu

ٱلدِّينَ

(in) the religion

l-dīna

فَلَمَّا

But when

falammā

نَجَّىٰهُمْ

He delivers them

najjāhum

إِلَى

to

ilā

ٱلْبَرِّ

the land

l-bari

إِذَا

behold

idhā

هُمْ

they

hum

يُشْرِكُونَ

associate partners (with Him)

yush'rikūna

٦٥

And when they board a ship, they supplicate Allāh, sincere to Him in religion [i.e., faith and hope]. But when He delivers them to the land, at once they associate others with Him

— Saheeh International

لِيَكْفُرُوا۟

So that they may deny

liyakfurū

بِمَآ

[in] what

bimā

ءَاتَيْنَـٰهُمْ

We have given them

ātaynāhum

وَلِيَتَمَتَّعُوا۟ ۖ

and they may enjoy (themselves)

waliyatamattaʿū

فَسَوْفَ

But soon

fasawfa

يَعْلَمُونَ

they will know

yaʿlamūna

٦٦

So that they will deny what We have granted them, and they will enjoy themselves. But they are going to know.1

— Saheeh International

أَوَلَمْ

Do not

awalam

يَرَوْا۟

they see

yaraw

أَنَّا

that We

annā

جَعَلْنَا

have made

jaʿalnā

حَرَمًا

a Sanctuary

ḥaraman

ءَامِنًۭا

secure

āminan

وَيُتَخَطَّفُ

while are being taken away

wayutakhaṭṭafu

ٱلنَّاسُ

the people

l-nāsu

مِنْ

around them

min

حَوْلِهِمْ ۚ

around them

ḥawlihim

أَفَبِٱلْبَـٰطِلِ

Then do in (the) falsehood

afabil-bāṭili

يُؤْمِنُونَ

they believe

yu'minūna

وَبِنِعْمَةِ

and in (the) Favor

wabiniʿ'mati

ٱللَّهِ

(of) Allah

l-lahi

يَكْفُرُونَ

they disbelieve

yakfurūna

٦٧

Have they not seen that We made [Makkah] a safe sanctuary, while people are being taken away1 all around them? Then in falsehood do they believe, and in the favor of Allāh they disbelieve?

— Saheeh International

وَمَنْ

And who

waman

أَظْلَمُ

(is) more unjust

aẓlamu

مِمَّنِ

than (he) who

mimmani

ٱفْتَرَىٰ

invents

if'tarā

عَلَى

against

ʿalā

ٱللَّهِ

Allah

l-lahi

كَذِبًا

a lie

kadhiban

أَوْ

or

aw

كَذَّبَ

denies

kadhaba

بِٱلْحَقِّ

the truth

bil-ḥaqi

لَمَّا

when

lammā

جَآءَهُۥٓ ۚ

it has come to him

jāahu

أَلَيْسَ

Is there not

alaysa

فِى

in

جَهَنَّمَ

Hell

jahannama

مَثْوًۭى

an abode

mathwan

لِّلْكَـٰفِرِينَ

for the disbelievers

lil'kāfirīna

٦٨

And who is more unjust than one who invents a lie about Allāh or denies the truth when it has come to him? Is there not in Hell a [sufficient] residence for the disbelievers?

— Saheeh International

وَٱلَّذِينَ

And those who

wa-alladhīna

جَـٰهَدُوا۟

strive

jāhadū

فِينَا

for Us

fīnā

لَنَهْدِيَنَّهُمْ

We will surely, guide them

lanahdiyannahum

سُبُلَنَا ۚ

(to) Our ways

subulanā

وَإِنَّ

And indeed

wa-inna

ٱللَّهَ

Allah

l-laha

لَمَعَ

surely (is) with

lamaʿa

ٱلْمُحْسِنِينَ

the good-doers

l-muḥ'sinīna

٦٩

And those who strive for Us - We will surely guide them to Our ways.1 And indeed, Allāh is with the doers of good.

— Saheeh International
