أَحَسِبَ Do think aḥasiba the people l-nāsu that an they will be left yut'rakū because an they say yaqūlū We believe āmannā and they wahum will not be tested lā will not be tested yuf'tanūna
Do the people think that they will be left to say, "We believe" and they will not be tried?
وَلَقَدْ And indeed walaqad We tested fatannā those who alladhīna (were) before them min (were) before them qablihim And Allah will surely make evident falayaʿlamanna And Allah will surely make evident l-lahu those who alladhīna (are) truthful ṣadaqū and He will surely make evident walayaʿlamanna the liars l-kādhibīna
But We have certainly tried those before them, and Allāh will surely make evident those who are truthful, and He will surely make evident the liars.
أَمْ Or am think ḥasiba those who alladhīna do yaʿmalūna evil deeds l-sayiāti that an they can outrun Us yasbiqūnā Evil is sāa what mā they judge yaḥkumūna
Or do those who do evil deeds think they can outrun [i.e., escape] Us? Evil is what they judge.
مَن Whoever man [is] kāna hopes yarjū (for the) meeting liqāa (with) Allah l-lahi then indeed fa-inna (the) Term ajala (of) Allah l-lahi (is) surely coming laātin And He wahuwa (is) the All-Hearer l-samīʿu the All-Knower l-ʿalīmu
Whoever should hope for the meeting with Allāh - indeed, the term [decreed by] Allāh is coming. And He is the Hearing, the Knowing.
وَمَن And whoever waman strives jāhada then only fa-innamā he strives yujāhidu for himself linafsihi Indeed inna Allah l-laha (is) Free from need laghaniyyun of ʿani the worlds l-ʿālamīna
And whoever strives only strives for [the benefit of] himself. Indeed, Allāh is Free from need of the worlds.
وَٱلَّذِينَ And those who wa-alladhīna believe āmanū and do waʿamilū righteous (deeds) l-ṣāliḥāti surely, We will remove lanukaffiranna from them ʿanhum their evil deeds sayyiātihim and We will surely reward them walanajziyannahum (the) best aḥsana (of) what alladhī they used kānū (to) do yaʿmalūna
And those who believe and do righteous deeds - We will surely remove from them their misdeeds and will surely reward them according to the best of what they used to do.
وَوَصَّيْنَا And We have enjoined wawaṣṣaynā (on) man l-insāna goodness to his parents biwālidayhi goodness to his parents ḥus'nan but if wa-in they both strive against you jāhadāka to make you associate litush'rika with Me bī what mā not laysa you have laka of it bihi any knowledge ʿil'mun then (do) not falā obey both of them tuṭiʿ'humā To Me ilayya (is) your return marjiʿukum and I will inform you fa-unabbi-ukum about what bimā you used kuntum (to) do taʿmalūna
And We have enjoined upon man goodness to parents. But if they endeavor to make you associate with Me that of which you have no knowledge,1 do not obey them. To Me is your return, and I will inform you about what you used to do.
وَٱلَّذِينَ And those who wa-alladhīna believe āmanū and do waʿamilū righteous deeds l-ṣāliḥāti We will surely admit them lanud'khilannahum among fī the righteous l-ṣāliḥīna
And those who believe and do righteous deeds - We will surely admit them among the righteous [into Paradise].
وَمِنَ And of wamina the people l-nāsi (is he) who man says yaqūlu We believe āmannā in Allah bil-lahi But when fa-idhā he is harmed ūdhiya in fī (the Way of) Allah l-lahi he considers jaʿala (the) trial fit'nata (of) the people l-nāsi as (the) punishment kaʿadhābi (of) Allah l-lahi But if wala-in comes jāa victory naṣrun from min your Lord rabbika surely they say layaqūlunna Indeed, we innā were kunnā with you maʿakum Is not awalaysa Allah l-lahu most knowing bi-aʿlama of what bimā (is) in fī (the) breasts ṣudūri (of) the worlds l-ʿālamīna
And of the people are some who say, "We believe in Allāh," but when one [of them] is harmed for [the cause of] Allāh, he considers the trial [i.e., harm] of the people as [if it were] the punishment of Allāh. But if victory comes from your Lord, they say, "Indeed, We were with you." Is not Allāh most knowing of what is within the breasts of the worlds [i.e., all creatures]?
وَلَيَعْلَمَنَّ And Allah will surely make evident walayaʿlamanna And Allah will surely make evident l-lahu those who alladhīna believe āmanū And He will surely make evident walayaʿlamanna the hypocrites l-munāfiqīna
And Allāh will surely make evident those who believe, and He will surely make evident the hypocrites.
وَقَالَ And said waqāla those who alladhīna disbelieve kafarū to those who lilladhīna believe āmanū Follow ittabiʿū our way sabīlanā and we will carry walnaḥmil your sins khaṭāyākum But not wamā they hum (are) going to carry biḥāmilīna of min their sins khaṭāyāhum any min thing shayin Indeed, they innahum (are) surely liars lakādhibūna
And those who disbelieve say to those who believe, "Follow our way, and we will carry your sins."1 But they will not carry anything of their sins. Indeed, they are liars.
وَلَيَحْمِلُنَّ But surely they will carry walayaḥmilunna their burdens athqālahum and burdens wa-athqālan with maʿa their burdens athqālihim and surely they will be questioned walayus'alunna (on the) Day yawma (of) the Resurrection l-qiyāmati about what ʿammā they used kānū (to) invent yaftarūna
But they will surely carry their [own] burdens and [other] burdens along with their burdens,1 and they will surely be questioned on the Day of Resurrection about what they used to invent.
وَلَقَدْ And verily walaqad We sent arsalnā Nuh nūḥan to ilā his people qawmihi and he remained falabitha among them fīhim a thousand alfa year(s) sanatin save illā fifty khamsīna year(s) ʿāman then seized them fa-akhadhahumu the flood l-ṭūfānu while they wahum (were) wrongdoers ẓālimūna
And We certainly sent Noah to his people, and he remained among them a thousand years minus fifty years, and the flood seized them while they were wrongdoers.
فَأَنجَيْنَـٰهُ But We saved him fa-anjaynāhu and (the) people wa-aṣḥāba (of) the ship l-safīnati and We made it wajaʿalnāhā a Sign āyatan for the worlds lil'ʿālamīna
But We saved him and the companions of the ship, and We made it1 a sign for the worlds.
وَإِبْرَٰهِيمَ And Ibrahim wa-ib'rāhīma when idh he said qāla to his people liqawmihi Worship uʿ'budū Allah l-laha and fear Him wa-ittaqūhu That dhālikum (is) better khayrun for you lakum if in you kuntum know taʿlamūna
And [We sent] Abraham, when he said to his people, "Worship Allāh and fear Him. That is best for you, if you should know.
إِنَّمَا Only innamā you worship taʿbudūna besides min besides dūni Allah l-lahi idols awthānan and you create watakhluqūna falsehood if'kan Indeed inna those whom alladhīna you worship taʿbudūna besides min besides dūni Allah l-lahi (do) not lā possess yamlikūna for you lakum any provision riz'qan So seek fa-ib'taghū from ʿinda Allah l-lahi the provision l-riz'qa and worship Him wa-uʿ'budūhu and be grateful wa-ush'kurū to Him lahu To Him ilayhi you will be returned tur'jaʿūna
You only worship, besides Allāh, idols, and you produce a falsehood. Indeed, those you worship besides Allāh do not possess for you [the power of] provision. So seek from Allāh provision and worship Him and be grateful to Him. To Him you will be returned."
وَإِن And if wa-in you deny tukadhibū then verily faqad denied kadhaba (the) nations umamun before you min before you qablikum And not wamā (is) on ʿalā the Messenger l-rasūli except illā the conveyance l-balāghu clear l-mubīnu
And if you [people] deny [the message] - already nations before you have denied. And there is not upon the Messenger except [the duty of] clear notification.1
أَوَلَمْ Do not awalam they see yaraw how kayfa Allah originates yub'di-u Allah originates l-lahu the creation l-khalqa then thumma repeats it yuʿīduhu Indeed inna that dhālika for ʿalā Allah l-lahi (is) easy yasīrun
Have they not considered how Allāh begins creation and then repeats it? Indeed that, for Allāh, is easy.
قُلْ Say qul Travel sīrū in fī the earth l-arḍi and see fa-unẓurū how kayfa He originated bada-a the creation l-khalqa Then thumma Allah l-lahu will produce yunshi-u the creation l-nashata the last l-ākhirata Indeed inna Allah l-laha on ʿalā every kulli thing shayin (is) All-Powerful qadīrun
Say, [O Muḥammad], "Travel through the land and observe how He began creation. Then Allāh will produce the final creation [i.e., development]. Indeed Allāh, over all things, is competent."
يُعَذِّبُ He punishes yuʿadhibu whom man He wills yashāu and has mercy wayarḥamu (on) whom man He wills yashāu and to Him wa-ilayhi you will be returned tuq'labūna
He punishes whom He wills and has mercy upon whom He wills, and to Him you will be returned.
وَمَآ And not wamā you antum can escape bimuʿ'jizīna in fī the earth l-arḍi and not walā in fī the heaven l-samāi And not wamā for you lakum besides min besides dūni Allah l-lahi any min protector waliyyin and not walā a helper naṣīrin
And you will not cause failure [to Allāh] upon the earth or in the heaven. And you have not other than Allāh any protector or any helper.
وَٱلَّذِينَ And those who wa-alladhīna disbelieve kafarū in (the) Signs biāyāti (of) Allah l-lahi and (the) meeting (with) Him waliqāihi those ulāika (have) despaired ya-isū of min My Mercy raḥmatī And those wa-ulāika for them lahum (is) a punishment ʿadhābun painful alīmun
And the ones who disbelieve in the signs of Allāh and the meeting with Him - those have despaired of My mercy, and they will have a painful punishment.
فَمَا And not famā was kāna (the) answer jawāba (of) his people qawmihi except illā that an they said qālū Kill him uq'tulūhu or aw burn him ḥarriqūhu But Allah saved him fa-anjāhu But Allah saved him l-lahu from mina the fire l-nāri Indeed inna in fī that dhālika surely (are) Signs laāyātin for a people liqawmin who believe yu'minūna
And the answer of his [i.e., Abraham's] people was not but that they said, "Kill him or burn him," but Allāh saved him from the fire. Indeed in that are signs for a people who believe.
وَقَالَ And he said waqāla Only innamā you have taken ittakhadhtum besides min besides dūni Allah l-lahi idols awthānan (out of) love mawaddata among you baynikum in fī the life l-ḥayati (of) the world l-dun'yā Then thumma (on the) Day yawma (of) the Resurrection l-qiyāmati you will deny yakfuru one another baʿḍukum one another bibaʿḍin and curse wayalʿanu one another baʿḍukum one another baʿḍan and your abode wamawākumu (will be) the Fire l-nāru and not wamā for you lakum any min helpers nāṣirīna
And [Abraham] said, "You have only taken, other than Allāh, idols as [a bond of] affection among you in worldly life. Then on the Day of Resurrection you will deny one another and curse one another, and your refuge will be the Fire, and you will not have any helpers."
۞ فَـَٔامَنَ And believed faāmana [in] him lahu Lut lūṭun and he said waqāla Indeed I (am) innī emigrating muhājirun to ilā my Lord rabbī Indeed, He innahu [He] (is) huwa the All-Mighty l-ʿazīzu the All-Wise l-ḥakīmu
And Lot believed him. [Abraham] said, "Indeed, I will emigrate to [the service of] my Lord. Indeed, He is the Exalted in Might, the Wise."
وَوَهَبْنَا And We granted wawahabnā to him lahu Isaac is'ḥāqa and Yaqub wayaʿqūba and We placed wajaʿalnā in fī his offsprings dhurriyyatihi the Prophethood l-nubuwata and the Book wal-kitāba And We gave him waātaynāhu his reward ajrahu in fī the world l-dun'yā And indeed, he wa-innahu in fī the Hereafter l-ākhirati (is) surely, among lamina the righteous l-ṣāliḥīna
And We gave to him Isaac and Jacob and placed in his descendants prophethood and scripture. And We gave him his reward in this world, and indeed, he is in the Hereafter among the righteous.
وَلُوطًا And Lut walūṭan when idh he said qāla to his people liqawmihi Indeed, you innakum commit latatūna the immorality l-fāḥishata not mā has preceded you sabaqakum with it bihā any min one aḥadin from mina the worlds l-ʿālamīna
And [mention] Lot, when he said to his people, "Indeed, you commit such immorality as no one has preceded you with from among the worlds.
أَئِنَّكُمْ Indeed, you a-innakum approach latatūna the men l-rijāla and you cut off wataqṭaʿūna the road l-sabīla and commit watatūna in fī your meetings nādīkumu evil l-munkara And not famā was kāna (the) answer jawāba (of) his people qawmihi except illā that an they said qālū Bring upon us i'tinā (the) punishment biʿadhābi (of) Allah l-lahi if in you are kunta of mina the truthful l-ṣādiqīna
Indeed, you approach men and obstruct the road1 and commit in your meetings [every] evil." And the answer of his people was not but that they said, "Bring us the punishment of Allāh, if you should be of the truthful."
قَالَ He said qāla My Lord rabbi Help me unṣur'nī against ʿalā the people l-qawmi the corrupters l-muf'sidīna
He said, "My Lord, support me against the corrupting people."
وَلَمَّا And when walammā came jāat Our messengers rusulunā (to) Ibrahim ib'rāhīma with the glad tidings bil-bush'rā they said qālū Indeed, we innā (are) going to destroy muh'likū (the) people ahli (of) this hādhihi town l-qaryati Indeed inna its people ahlahā are kānū wrongdoers ẓālimīna
And when Our messengers [i.e., angels] came to Abraham with the good tidings,1 they said, "Indeed, we will destroy the people of that [i.e., Lot's] city. Indeed, its people have been wrongdoers."
قَالَ He said qāla Indeed inna in it fīhā (is) Lut lūṭan They said qālū We naḥnu know better aʿlamu who biman (is) in it fīhā We will surely save him lanunajjiyannahu and his family wa-ahlahu except illā his wife im'ra-atahu She kānat (is) of mina those who remain behind l-ghābirīna
[Abraham] said, "Indeed, within it is Lot." They said, "We are more knowing of who is within it. We will surely save him and his family, except his wife. She is to be of those who remain behind."
وَلَمَّآ And when walammā [that] an came jāat Our messengers rusulunā (to) Lut lūṭan he was distressed sīa for them bihim and felt straitened waḍāqa for them bihim (and) uneasy dharʿan And they said waqālū (Do) not lā fear takhaf and (do) not walā grieve taḥzan Indeed, we innā (will) save you munajjūka and your family wa-ahlaka except illā your wife im'ra-ataka She kānat (is) of mina those who remain behind l-ghābirīna
And when Our messengers [i.e., angels] came to Lot, he was distressed for them and felt for them great discomfort.1 They said, "Fear not, nor grieve. Indeed, we will save you and your family, except your wife; she is to be of those who remain behind.
إِنَّا Indeed, we innā (will) bring down munzilūna on ʿalā (the) people ahli (of) this hādhihi town l-qaryati a punishment rij'zan from mina (the) sky l-samāi because bimā they have been kānū defiantly disobedient yafsuqūna
Indeed, we will bring down on the people of this city punishment from the sky because they have been defiantly disobedient."
وَلَقَد And verily walaqad We have left taraknā about it min'hā a sign āyatan (as) evidence bayyinatan for a people liqawmin who use reason yaʿqilūna
And We have certainly left of it a sign as clear evidence for a people who use reason.
وَإِلَىٰ And to wa-ilā Madyan madyana their brother akhāhum Shuaib shuʿayban And he said faqāla O my people yāqawmi Worship uʿ'budū Allah l-laha and expect wa-ir'jū the Day l-yawma the Last l-ākhira and (do) not walā commit evil taʿthaw in fī the earth l-arḍi (as) corrupters muf'sidīna
And to Madyan [We sent] their brother Shuʿayb, and he said, "O my people, worship Allāh and expect the Last Day and do not commit abuse on the earth, spreading corruption."
فَكَذَّبُوهُ But they denied him fakadhabūhu so seized them fa-akhadhathumu the earthquake l-rajfatu and they became fa-aṣbaḥū in fī their home dārihim fallen prone jāthimīna
But they denied him, so the earthquake seized them, and they became within their home [corpses] fallen prone.
وَعَادًۭا And Aad waʿādan and Thamud wathamūdā and verily waqad (has) become clear tabayyana to you lakum from min their dwellings masākinihim And made fair-seeming wazayyana to them lahumu the Shaitaan l-shayṭānu their deeds aʿmālahum and averted them faṣaddahum from ʿani the Way l-sabīli though they were wakānū endowed with insight mus'tabṣirīna
And [We destroyed] ʿAad and Thamūd, and it has become clear to you from their [ruined] dwellings. And Satan had made pleasing to them their deeds and averted them from the path, and they were endowed with perception.
وَقَـٰرُونَ And Qarun waqārūna and Firaun wafir'ʿawna and Haman wahāmāna And certainly walaqad came to them jāahum Musa mūsā with clear evidences bil-bayināti but they were arrogant fa-is'takbarū in fī the earth l-arḍi and not wamā they could kānū outstrip Us sābiqīna
And [We destroyed] Qārūn and Pharaoh and Hāmān. And Moses had already come to them with clear evidences, and they were arrogant in the land, but they were not outrunners [of Our punishment].
فَكُلًّا So each fakullan We seized akhadhnā for his sin bidhanbihi Then of them famin'hum (was he) who man We sent arsalnā on him ʿalayhi a violent storm ḥāṣiban and of them wamin'hum (was he) who man seized him akhadhathu the awful cry l-ṣayḥatu and of them wamin'hum (was he) who man We caused to swallow khasafnā him bihi the earth l-arḍa and of them wamin'hum (was he) who man We drowned aghraqnā And not wamā was kāna Allah l-lahu to wrong them liyaẓlimahum but walākin they were kānū themselves anfusahum doing wrong yaẓlimūna
So each We seized for his sin; and among them were those upon whom We sent a storm of stones, and among them were those who were seized by the blast [from the sky], and among them were those whom We caused the earth to swallow, and among them were those whom We drowned. And Allāh would not have wronged them, but it was they who were wronging themselves.
مَثَلُ (The) example mathalu (of) those who alladhīna take ittakhadhū besides min besides dūni Allah l-lahi protectors awliyāa (is) like kamathali the spider l-ʿankabūti who takes ittakhadhat a house baytan And indeed wa-inna the weakest awhana (of) houses l-buyūti (is) surely (the) house labaytu (of) the spider l-ʿankabūti if (only) law they kānū know yaʿlamūna
The example of those who take allies other than Allāh is like that of the spider who takes [i.e., constructs] a home. And indeed, the weakest of homes is the home of the spider, if they only knew.
إِنَّ Indeed inna Allah l-laha knows yaʿlamu what mā they invoke yadʿūna besides Him min besides Him dūnihi any min thing shayin And He wahuwa (is) the All-Mighty l-ʿazīzu the All-Wise l-ḥakīmu
Indeed, Allāh knows whatever thing they call upon1 other than Him. And He is the Exalted in Might, the Wise.
وَتِلْكَ And these watil'ka examples l-amthālu We set forth naḍribuhā to mankind lilnnāsi but not wamā will understand them yaʿqiluhā except illā those of knowledge l-ʿālimūna
And these examples We present to the people, but none will understand them except those of knowledge.
خَلَقَ Allah created khalaqa Allah created l-lahu the heavens l-samāwāti and the earth wal-arḍa in truth bil-ḥaqi Indeed inna in fī that dhālika (is) surely a Sign laāyatan for the believers lil'mu'minīna
Allāh created the heavens and the earth in truth. Indeed in that is a sign for the believers.
ٱتْلُ Recite ut'lu what mā has been revealed ūḥiya to you ilayka of mina the Book l-kitābi and establish wa-aqimi the prayer l-ṣalata Indeed inna the prayer l-ṣalata prevents tanhā from ʿani the immorality l-faḥshāi and evil deeds wal-munkari and surely (the) remembrance waladhik'ru (of) Allah l-lahi (is) greatest akbaru And Allah wal-lahu knows yaʿlamu what mā you do taṣnaʿūna
Recite, [O Muḥammad], what has been revealed to you of the Book and establish prayer. Indeed, prayer prohibits immorality and wrongdoing, and the remembrance of Allāh is greater. And Allāh knows that which you do.
۞ وَلَا And (do) not walā argue tujādilū (with the) People of the Book ahla (with the) People of the Book l-kitābi except illā by which bi-allatī [it] hiya (is) best aḥsanu except illā those who alladhīna (do) wrong ẓalamū among them min'hum and say waqūlū We believe āmannā in that (which) bi-alladhī has been revealed unzila to us ilaynā and was revealed wa-unzila to you ilaykum And our God wa-ilāhunā and your God wa-ilāhukum (is) One wāḥidun and we wanaḥnu to Him lahu submit mus'limūna
And do not argue with the People of the Scripture except in a way that is best, except for those who commit injustice among them, and say, "We believe in that which has been revealed to us and revealed to you. And our God and your God is one; and we are Muslims [in submission] to Him."
وَكَذَٰلِكَ And thus wakadhālika We (have) revealed anzalnā to you ilayka the Book l-kitāba So those fa-alladhīna We gave [them] ātaynāhumu the Book l-kitāba believe yu'minūna therein bihi And among wamin these hāulāi (are some) who man believe yu'minu therein bihi And none wamā reject yajḥadu Our Verses biāyātinā except illā the disbelievers l-kāfirūna
And thus We have sent down to you the Book [i.e., the Qur’ān]. And those to whom We [previously] gave the Scripture believe in it. And among these [people of Makkah] are those who believe in it. And none reject Our verses except the disbelievers.
وَمَا And not wamā (did) you kunta recite tatlū before it min before it qablihi any min Book kitābin and not walā (did) you write it takhuṭṭuhu with your right hand biyamīnika in that case idhan surely (would) have doubted la-ir'tāba the falsifiers l-mub'ṭilūna
And you did not recite before it any scripture, nor did you inscribe one with your right hand. Then [i.e., otherwise] the falsifiers would have had [cause for] doubt.
بَلْ Nay bal it huwa (is) Verses āyātun clear bayyinātun in fī (the) breasts ṣudūri (of) those who alladhīna are given ūtū the knowledge l-ʿil'ma And not wamā reject yajḥadu Our Verses biāyātinā except illā the wrongdoers l-ẓālimūna
Rather, it [i.e., the Qur’ān] is distinct verses [preserved] within the breasts of those who have been given knowledge. And none reject Our verses except the wrongdoers.
وَقَالُوا۟ And they say waqālū Why not lawlā are sent down unzila to him ʿalayhi (the) Signs āyātun from min his Lord rabbihi Say qul Only innamā the Signs l-āyātu (are) with ʿinda Allah l-lahi and only wa-innamā I (am) anā a warner nadhīrun clear mubīnun
But they say, "Why are not signs sent down to him from his Lord?" Say, "The signs are only with Allāh, and I am only a clear warner."
أَوَلَمْ And is (it) not awalam sufficient for them yakfihim that We annā revealed anzalnā to you ʿalayka the Book l-kitāba (which) is recited yut'lā to them ʿalayhim Indeed inna in fī that dhālika surely is a mercy laraḥmatan and a reminder wadhik'rā for a people liqawmin who believe yu'minūna
And is it not sufficient for them that We revealed to you the Book [i.e., the Qur’ān] which is recited to them? Indeed in that is a mercy and reminder for a people who believe.
قُلْ Say qul Sufficient is kafā Allah bil-lahi between me baynī and between you wabaynakum (as) a Witness shahīdan He knows yaʿlamu what mā (is) in fī the heavens l-samāwāti and the earth wal-arḍi And those who wa-alladhīna believe āmanū in [the] falsehood bil-bāṭili and disbelieve wakafarū in Allah bil-lahi those ulāika they humu (are) the losers l-khāsirūna
Say, "Sufficient is Allāh between me and you as Witness. He knows what is in the heavens and earth. And they who have believed in falsehood and disbelieved in Allāh - it is those who are the losers."
وَيَسْتَعْجِلُونَكَ And they ask you to hasten wayastaʿjilūnaka [with] the punishment bil-ʿadhābi And if not walawlā (for) a term ajalun appointed musamman surely (would) have come to them lajāahumu the punishment l-ʿadhābu But it will surely come to them walayatiyannahum suddenly baghtatan while they wahum (do) not lā perceive yashʿurūna
And they urge you to hasten the punishment. And if not for [the decree of] a specified term, punishment would have reached them. But it will surely come to them suddenly while they perceive not.
يَسْتَعْجِلُونَكَ They ask you to hasten yastaʿjilūnaka the punishment bil-ʿadhābi And indeed wa-inna Hell jahannama will surely, encompass lamuḥīṭatun the disbelievers bil-kāfirīna
They urge you to hasten the punishment. And indeed, Hell will be encompassing of the disbelievers
يَوْمَ On (the) Day yawma will cover them yaghshāhumu the punishment l-ʿadhābu from min above them fawqihim and from wamin below taḥti their feet arjulihim and He will say wayaqūlu Taste dhūqū what mā you used kuntum (to) do taʿmalūna
On the Day the punishment will cover them from above them and from below their feet and it is said, "Taste [the result of] what you used to do."
يَـٰعِبَادِىَ O My servants yāʿibādiya who alladhīna believe āmanū Indeed inna My earth arḍī (is) spacious wāsiʿatun so only fa-iyyāya worship Me fa-uʿ'budūni
O My servants who have believed, indeed My earth is spacious, so worship only Me.
كُلُّ Every kullu soul nafsin (will) taste dhāiqatu the death l-mawti Then thumma to Us ilaynā you will be returned tur'jaʿūna
Every soul will taste death. Then to Us will you be returned.
وَٱلَّذِينَ And those who wa-alladhīna believe āmanū and do waʿamilū [the] righteous deeds l-ṣāliḥāti surely We will give them a place lanubawwi-annahum in mina Paradise l-janati lofty dwellings ghurafan flow tajrī from min underneath it taḥtihā the rivers l-anhāru will abide forever khālidīna in it fīhā Excellent is niʿ'ma (the) reward ajru (of) the workers l-ʿāmilīna
And those who have believed and done righteous deeds - We will surely assign to them of Paradise [elevated] chambers beneath which rivers flow, wherein they abide eternally. Excellent is the reward of the [righteous] workers
ٱلَّذِينَ Those who alladhīna (are) patient ṣabarū and upon waʿalā their Lord rabbihim put their trust yatawakkalūna
Who have been patient and upon their Lord rely.
وَكَأَيِّن And how many waka-ayyin of min a creature dābbatin (does) not lā carry taḥmilu its provision riz'qahā Allah l-lahu provides (for) it yarzuquhā and (for) you wa-iyyākum And He wahuwa (is) the All-Hearer l-samīʿu the All-Knower l-ʿalīmu
And how many a creature carries not its [own] provision. Allāh provides for it and for you. And He is the Hearing, the Knowing.
وَلَئِن And if wala-in you ask them sa-altahum Who man created khalaqa the heavens l-samāwāti and the earth wal-arḍa and subjected wasakhara the sun l-shamsa and the moon wal-qamara Surely they would say layaqūlunna Allah l-lahu Then how fa-annā are they deluded yu'fakūna
If you asked them, "Who created the heavens and earth and subjected the sun and the moon?" they would surely say, "Allāh." Then how are they deluded?
ٱللَّهُ Allah al-lahu extends yabsuṭu the provision l-riz'qa for whom liman He wills yashāu of min His slaves ʿibādihi and restricts wayaqdiru for him lahu Indeed inna Allah l-laha of every bikulli thing shayin (is) All-Knower ʿalīmun
Allāh extends provision for whom He wills of His servants and restricts for him. Indeed Allāh is, of all things, Knowing.
وَلَئِن And if wala-in you ask them sa-altahum Who man sends down nazzala from mina the sky l-samāi water māan and gives life fa-aḥyā thereby bihi (to) the earth l-arḍa after min after baʿdi its death mawtihā Surely, they would say layaqūlunna Allah l-lahu Say quli All Praises l-ḥamdu (are) for Allah lillahi But bal most of them aktharuhum (do) not lā use reason yaʿqilūna
And if you asked them, "Who sends down rain from the sky and gives life thereby to the earth after its lifelessness?" they would surely say, "Allāh." Say, "Praise to Allāh"; but most of them do not reason.
وَمَا And not wamā (is) this hādhihi life l-ḥayatu (of) the world l-dun'yā but illā amusement lahwun and play walaʿibun And indeed wa-inna the Home l-dāra (of) the Hereafter l-ākhirata surely, it lahiya (is) the life l-ḥayawānu if only law they kānū know yaʿlamūna
And this worldly life is not but diversion and amusement. And indeed, the home of the Hereafter - that is the [eternal] life, if only they knew.
فَإِذَا And when fa-idhā they embark rakibū [in] fī the ship l-ful'ki they call daʿawū Allah l-laha (being) sincere mukh'liṣīna to Him lahu (in) the religion l-dīna But when falammā He delivers them najjāhum to ilā the land l-bari behold idhā they hum associate partners (with Him) yush'rikūna
And when they board a ship, they supplicate Allāh, sincere to Him in religion [i.e., faith and hope]. But when He delivers them to the land, at once they associate others with Him
لِيَكْفُرُوا۟ So that they may deny liyakfurū [in] what bimā We have given them ātaynāhum and they may enjoy (themselves) waliyatamattaʿū But soon fasawfa they will know yaʿlamūna
So that they will deny what We have granted them, and they will enjoy themselves. But they are going to know.1
أَوَلَمْ Do not awalam they see yaraw that We annā have made jaʿalnā a Sanctuary ḥaraman secure āminan while are being taken away wayutakhaṭṭafu the people l-nāsu around them min around them ḥawlihim Then do in (the) falsehood afabil-bāṭili they believe yu'minūna and in (the) Favor wabiniʿ'mati (of) Allah l-lahi they disbelieve yakfurūna
Have they not seen that We made [Makkah] a safe sanctuary, while people are being taken away1 all around them? Then in falsehood do they believe, and in the favor of Allāh they disbelieve?
وَمَنْ And who waman (is) more unjust aẓlamu than (he) who mimmani invents if'tarā against ʿalā Allah l-lahi a lie kadhiban or aw denies kadhaba the truth bil-ḥaqi when lammā it has come to him jāahu Is there not alaysa in fī Hell jahannama an abode mathwan for the disbelievers lil'kāfirīna
And who is more unjust than one who invents a lie about Allāh or denies the truth when it has come to him? Is there not in Hell a [sufficient] residence for the disbelievers?
وَٱلَّذِينَ And those who wa-alladhīna strive jāhadū for Us fīnā We will surely, guide them lanahdiyannahum (to) Our ways subulanā And indeed wa-inna Allah l-laha surely (is) with lamaʿa the good-doers l-muḥ'sinīna
And those who strive for Us - We will surely guide them to Our ways.1 And indeed, Allāh is with the doers of good.
