Aş-Şāffāt

Those who set the Ranks

الصافات

وَٱلصَّـٰٓفَّـٰتِ

By those lined

wal-ṣāfāti

صَفًّۭا

(in) rows

ṣaffan

١

By those [angels] lined up in rows

— Saheeh International

فَٱلزَّٰجِرَٰتِ

And those who drive

fal-zājirāti

زَجْرًۭا

strongly

zajran

٢

And those who drive [the clouds]

— Saheeh International

فَٱلتَّـٰلِيَـٰتِ

And those who recite

fal-tāliyāti

ذِكْرًا

(the) Message

dhik'ran

٣

And those who recite the message,1

— Saheeh International

إِنَّ

Indeed

inna

إِلَـٰهَكُمْ

your Lord

ilāhakum

لَوَٰحِدٌۭ

(is) surely One

lawāḥidun

٤

Indeed, your God is One,

— Saheeh International

رَّبُّ

Lord

rabbu

ٱلسَّمَـٰوَٰتِ

(of) the heavens

l-samāwāti

وَٱلْأَرْضِ

and the earth

wal-arḍi

وَمَا

and what

wamā

بَيْنَهُمَا

(is) between both of them

baynahumā

وَرَبُّ

and Lord

warabbu

ٱلْمَشَـٰرِقِ

(of) each point of sunrise

l-mashāriqi

٥

Lord of the heavens and the earth and that between them and Lord of the sunrises.1

— Saheeh International

إِنَّا

Indeed, We

innā

زَيَّنَّا

[We] adorned

zayyannā

ٱلسَّمَآءَ

the sky

l-samāa

ٱلدُّنْيَا

[the world]

l-dun'yā

بِزِينَةٍ

with an adornment

bizīnatin

ٱلْكَوَاكِبِ

(of) the stars

l-kawākibi

٦

Indeed, We have adorned the nearest heaven with an adornment of stars

— Saheeh International

وَحِفْظًۭا

And (to) guard

waḥif'ẓan

مِّن

against

min

كُلِّ

every

kulli

شَيْطَـٰنٍۢ

devil

shayṭānin

مَّارِدٍۢ

rebellious

māridin

٧

And as protection against every rebellious devil

— Saheeh International

لَّا

Not

يَسَّمَّعُونَ

they may listen

yassammaʿūna

إِلَى

to

ilā

ٱلْمَلَإِ

the assembly

l-mala-i

ٱلْأَعْلَىٰ

[the] exalted

l-aʿlā

وَيُقْذَفُونَ

are pelted

wayuq'dhafūna

مِن

from

min

كُلِّ

every

kulli

جَانِبٍۢ

side

jānibin

٨

[So] they may not listen to the exalted assembly [of angels] and are pelted from every side,1

— Saheeh International

دُحُورًۭا ۖ

Repelled

duḥūran

وَلَهُمْ

and for them

walahum

عَذَابٌۭ

(is) a punishment

ʿadhābun

وَاصِبٌ

perpetual

wāṣibun

٩

Repelled; and for them is a constant punishment,

— Saheeh International

إِلَّا

Except

illā

مَنْ

(him) who

man

خَطِفَ

snatches

khaṭifa

ٱلْخَطْفَةَ

(by) theft

l-khaṭfata

فَأَتْبَعَهُۥ

but follows him

fa-atbaʿahu

شِهَابٌۭ

a burning flame

shihābun

ثَاقِبٌۭ

piercing

thāqibun

١٠

Except one who snatches [some words] by theft, but they are pursued by a burning flame, piercing [in brightness].

— Saheeh International

فَٱسْتَفْتِهِمْ

Then ask them

fa-is'taftihim

أَهُمْ

Are they

ahum

أَشَدُّ

a stronger

ashaddu

خَلْقًا

creation

khalqan

أَم

or

am

مَّنْ

(those) whom

man

خَلَقْنَآ ۚ

We have created

khalaqnā

إِنَّا

Indeed, We

innā

خَلَقْنَـٰهُم

created them

khalaqnāhum

مِّن

from

min

طِينٍۢ

a clay

ṭīnin

لَّازِبٍۭ

sticky

lāzibin

١١

Then inquire of them, [O Muḥammad], "Are they a stronger [or more difficult] creation or those [others] We have created?" Indeed, We created them [i.e., men] from sticky clay.

— Saheeh International

بَلْ

Nay

bal

عَجِبْتَ

you wonder

ʿajib'ta

وَيَسْخَرُونَ

while they mock

wayaskharūna

١٢

But you wonder, while they mock,

— Saheeh International

وَإِذَا

And when

wa-idhā

ذُكِّرُوا۟

they are reminded

dhukkirū

لَا

not

يَذْكُرُونَ

they receive admonition

yadhkurūna

١٣

And when they are reminded, they remember not.

— Saheeh International

وَإِذَا

And when

wa-idhā

رَأَوْا۟

they see

ra-aw

ءَايَةًۭ

a Sign

āyatan

يَسْتَسْخِرُونَ

they mock

yastaskhirūna

١٤

And when they see a sign, they ridicule.

— Saheeh International

وَقَالُوٓا۟

And they say

waqālū

إِنْ

Not

in

هَـٰذَآ

(is) this

hādhā

إِلَّا

except

illā

سِحْرٌۭ

a magic

siḥ'run

مُّبِينٌ

clear

mubīnun

١٥

And say, "This is not but obvious magic.

— Saheeh International

أَءِذَا

Is it when

a-idhā

مِتْنَا

we are dead

mit'nā

وَكُنَّا

and have become

wakunnā

تُرَابًۭا

dust

turāban

وَعِظَـٰمًا

and bones

waʿiẓāman

أَءِنَّا

shall we then

a-innā

لَمَبْعُوثُونَ

be certainly resurrected

lamabʿūthūna

١٦

When we have died and become dust and bones, are we indeed to be resurrected?

— Saheeh International

أَوَءَابَآؤُنَا

Or our fathers

awaābāunā

ٱلْأَوَّلُونَ

former

l-awalūna

١٧

And our forefathers [as well]?"

— Saheeh International

قُلْ

Say

qul

نَعَمْ

Yes

naʿam

وَأَنتُمْ

and you

wa-antum

دَٰخِرُونَ

(will be) humiliated

dākhirūna

١٨

Say, "Yes, and you will be [rendered] contemptible."

— Saheeh International

فَإِنَّمَا

Then only

fa-innamā

هِىَ

it

hiya

زَجْرَةٌۭ

(will be) a cry

zajratun

وَٰحِدَةٌۭ

single

wāḥidatun

فَإِذَا

then, behold

fa-idhā

هُمْ

They

hum

يَنظُرُونَ

will see

yanẓurūna

١٩

It will be only one shout, and at once they will be observing.

— Saheeh International

وَقَالُوا۟

And they will say

waqālū

يَـٰوَيْلَنَا

O woe to us

yāwaylanā

هَـٰذَا

This

hādhā

يَوْمُ

(is the) Day

yawmu

ٱلدِّينِ

(of) the Recompense

l-dīni

٢٠

They will say, "O woe to us! This is the Day of Recompense."

— Saheeh International

هَـٰذَا

This

hādhā

يَوْمُ

(is the) Day

yawmu

ٱلْفَصْلِ

(of) Judgment

l-faṣli

ٱلَّذِى

which

alladhī

كُنتُم

you used to

kuntum

بِهِۦ

[of it]

bihi

تُكَذِّبُونَ

deny

tukadhibūna

٢١

[They will be told], "This is the Day of Judgement which you used to deny."

— Saheeh International

۞ ٱحْشُرُوا۟

Gather

uḥ'shurū

ٱلَّذِينَ

those who

alladhīna

ظَلَمُوا۟

wronged

ẓalamū

وَأَزْوَٰجَهُمْ

and their kinds

wa-azwājahum

وَمَا

and what

wamā

كَانُوا۟

they used (to)

kānū

يَعْبُدُونَ

worship

yaʿbudūna

٢٢

[The angels will be ordered], "Gather those who committed wrong, their kinds,1 and what they used to worship

— Saheeh International

مِن

Besides

min

دُونِ

Besides

dūni

ٱللَّهِ

Allah

l-lahi

فَٱهْدُوهُمْ

then lead them

fa-ih'dūhum

إِلَىٰ

to

ilā

صِرَٰطِ

(the) Path

ṣirāṭi

ٱلْجَحِيمِ

(of) the Hellfire

l-jaḥīmi

٢٣

Other than Allāh, and guide them to the path of Hellfire

— Saheeh International

وَقِفُوهُمْ ۖ

And stop them

waqifūhum

إِنَّهُم

indeed, they

innahum

مَّسْـُٔولُونَ

(are) to be questioned

masūlūna

٢٤

And stop them; indeed, they are to be questioned."

— Saheeh International

مَا

What

لَكُمْ

(is) for you

lakum

لَا

(Why) not

تَنَاصَرُونَ

you help one another

tanāṣarūna

٢٥

[They will be asked], "What is [wrong] with you? Why do you not help each other?"

— Saheeh International

بَلْ

Nay

bal

هُمُ

they

humu

ٱلْيَوْمَ

(on) that Day

l-yawma

مُسْتَسْلِمُونَ

(will) surrender

mus'taslimūna

٢٦

But they, that Day, are in surrender.

— Saheeh International

وَأَقْبَلَ

And will approach

wa-aqbala

بَعْضُهُمْ

some of them

baʿḍuhum

عَلَىٰ

to

ʿalā

بَعْضٍۢ

others

baʿḍin

يَتَسَآءَلُونَ

questioning one another

yatasāalūna

٢٧

And they will approach one another asking [i.e., blaming] each other.

— Saheeh International

قَالُوٓا۟

They will say

qālū

إِنَّكُمْ

Indeed, you

innakum

كُنتُمْ

[you] used (to)

kuntum

تَأْتُونَنَا

come (to) us

tatūnanā

عَنِ

from

ʿani

ٱلْيَمِينِ

the right

l-yamīni

٢٨

They will say, "Indeed, you used to come at us from the right."1

— Saheeh International

قَالُوا۟

They will say

qālū

بَل

Nay

bal

لَّمْ

not

lam

تَكُونُوا۟

you were

takūnū

مُؤْمِنِينَ

believers

mu'minīna

٢٩

They [i.e., the oppressors] will say, "Rather, you [yourselves] were not believers,

— Saheeh International

وَمَا

And not

wamā

كَانَ

was

kāna

لَنَا

for us

lanā

عَلَيْكُم

over you

ʿalaykum

مِّن

any

min

سُلْطَـٰنٍۭ ۖ

authority

sul'ṭānin

بَلْ

Nay

bal

كُنتُمْ

you were

kuntum

قَوْمًۭا

a people

qawman

طَـٰغِينَ

transgressing

ṭāghīna

٣٠

And we had over you no authority, but you were a transgressing people.

— Saheeh International

فَحَقَّ

So has been proved true

faḥaqqa

عَلَيْنَا

against us

ʿalaynā

قَوْلُ

(the) Word

qawlu

رَبِّنَآ ۖ

(of) our Lord

rabbinā

إِنَّا

indeed, we

innā

لَذَآئِقُونَ

(will) certainly taste

ladhāiqūna

٣١

So the word [i.e., decree] of our Lord has come into effect upon us; indeed, we will taste [punishment].

— Saheeh International

فَأَغْوَيْنَـٰكُمْ

So we led you astray

fa-aghwaynākum

إِنَّا

indeed, we

innā

كُنَّا

were

kunnā

غَـٰوِينَ

astray

ghāwīna

٣٢

And we led you to deviation; indeed, we were deviators."

— Saheeh International

فَإِنَّهُمْ

Then indeed, they

fa-innahum

يَوْمَئِذٍۢ

that Day

yawma-idhin

فِى

in

ٱلْعَذَابِ

the punishment

l-ʿadhābi

مُشْتَرِكُونَ

(will be) sharers

mush'tarikūna

٣٣

So indeed they, that Day, will be sharing in the punishment.

— Saheeh International

إِنَّا

Indeed, We

innā

كَذَٰلِكَ

thus

kadhālika

نَفْعَلُ

We deal

nafʿalu

بِٱلْمُجْرِمِينَ

with the criminals

bil-muj'rimīna

٣٤

Indeed, that is how We deal with the criminals.

— Saheeh International

إِنَّهُمْ

Indeed, they

innahum

كَانُوٓا۟

were

kānū

إِذَا

when

idhā

قِيلَ

it was said

qīla

لَهُمْ

to them

lahum

لَآ

(There is) no

إِلَـٰهَ

god

ilāha

إِلَّا

except

illā

ٱللَّهُ

Allah

l-lahu

يَسْتَكْبِرُونَ

were arrogant

yastakbirūna

٣٥

Indeed they, when it was said to them, "There is no deity but Allāh," were arrogant

— Saheeh International

وَيَقُولُونَ

And they say

wayaqūlūna

أَئِنَّا

Are we

a-innā

لَتَارِكُوٓا۟

to leave

latārikū

ءَالِهَتِنَا

our gods

ālihatinā

لِشَاعِرٍۢ

for a poet

lishāʿirin

مَّجْنُونٍۭ

mad

majnūnin

٣٦

And were saying, "Are we to leave our gods for a mad poet?"

— Saheeh International

بَلْ

Nay

bal

جَآءَ

he has brought

jāa

بِٱلْحَقِّ

the truth

bil-ḥaqi

وَصَدَّقَ

and confirmed

waṣaddaqa

ٱلْمُرْسَلِينَ

the Messengers

l-mur'salīna

٣٧

Rather, he [i.e., the Prophet (ﷺ)] has come with the truth and confirmed the [previous] messengers.

— Saheeh International

إِنَّكُمْ

Indeed, you

innakum

لَذَآئِقُوا۟

(will) surely taste

ladhāiqū

ٱلْعَذَابِ

the punishment

l-ʿadhābi

ٱلْأَلِيمِ

painful

l-alīmi

٣٨

Indeed, you [disbelievers] will be tasters of the painful punishment,

— Saheeh International

وَمَا

And not

wamā

تُجْزَوْنَ

you will be recompensed

tuj'zawna

إِلَّا

except

illā

مَا

what

كُنتُمْ

you used to

kuntum

تَعْمَلُونَ

do

taʿmalūna

٣٩

And you will not be recompensed except for what you used to do -

— Saheeh International

إِلَّا

Except

illā

عِبَادَ

(the) slaves

ʿibāda

ٱللَّهِ

(of) Allah

l-lahi

ٱلْمُخْلَصِينَ

the chosen ones

l-mukh'laṣīna

٤٠

But not the chosen servants of Allāh.

— Saheeh International

أُو۟لَـٰٓئِكَ

Those

ulāika

لَهُمْ

for them

lahum

رِزْقٌۭ

(will be) a provision

riz'qun

مَّعْلُومٌۭ

determined

maʿlūmun

٤١

Those will have a provision determined -

— Saheeh International

فَوَٰكِهُ ۖ

Fruits

fawākihu

وَهُم

and they

wahum

مُّكْرَمُونَ

(will) be honored

muk'ramūna

٤٢

Fruits;1 and they will be honored

— Saheeh International

فِى

In

جَنَّـٰتِ

Gardens

jannāti

ٱلنَّعِيمِ

(of) Delight

l-naʿīmi

٤٣

In gardens of pleasure

— Saheeh International

عَلَىٰ

On

ʿalā

سُرُرٍۢ

thrones

sururin

مُّتَقَـٰبِلِينَ

facing each other

mutaqābilīna

٤٤

On thrones facing one another.

— Saheeh International

يُطَافُ

Will be circulated

yuṭāfu

عَلَيْهِم

among them

ʿalayhim

بِكَأْسٍۢ

a cup

bikasin

مِّن

from

min

مَّعِينٍۭ

a flowing spring

maʿīnin

٤٥

There will be circulated among them a cup [of wine] from a flowing spring,

— Saheeh International

بَيْضَآءَ

White

bayḍāa

لَذَّةٍۢ

delicious

ladhatin

لِّلشَّـٰرِبِينَ

for the drinkers

lilshāribīna

٤٦

White and delicious to the drinkers;

— Saheeh International

لَا

Not

فِيهَا

in it

fīhā

غَوْلٌۭ

(is) bad effect

ghawlun

وَلَا

and not

walā

هُمْ

they

hum

عَنْهَا

from it

ʿanhā

يُنزَفُونَ

will be intoxicated

yunzafūna

٤٧

No bad effect is there in it, nor from it will they be intoxicated.

— Saheeh International

وَعِندَهُمْ

And with them

waʿindahum

قَـٰصِرَٰتُ

(will be) companions of modest gaze

qāṣirātu

ٱلطَّرْفِ

(will be) companions of modest gaze

l-ṭarfi

عِينٌۭ

(having) beautiful eyes

ʿīnun

٤٨

And with them will be women limiting [their] glances,1 with large, [beautiful] eyes,

— Saheeh International

كَأَنَّهُنَّ

As if they were

ka-annahunna

بَيْضٌۭ

eggs

bayḍun

مَّكْنُونٌۭ

well protected

maknūnun

٤٩

As if they were [delicate] eggs, well-protected.

— Saheeh International

فَأَقْبَلَ

And (will) approach

fa-aqbala

بَعْضُهُمْ

some of them

baʿḍuhum

عَلَىٰ

to

ʿalā

بَعْضٍۢ

others

baʿḍin

يَتَسَآءَلُونَ

questioning one another

yatasāalūna

٥٠

And they will approach one another, inquiring of each other.

— Saheeh International

قَالَ

Will say

qāla

قَآئِلٌۭ

a speaker

qāilun

مِّنْهُمْ

among them

min'hum

إِنِّى

Indeed, I

innī

كَانَ

had

kāna

لِى

for me

قَرِينٌۭ

a companion

qarīnun

٥١

A speaker among them will say, "Indeed, I had a companion [on earth].

— Saheeh International

يَقُولُ

Who (would) say

yaqūlu

أَءِنَّكَ

Are you indeed

a-innaka

لَمِنَ

surely of

lamina

ٱلْمُصَدِّقِينَ

those who believe

l-muṣadiqīna

٥٢

Who would say, 'Are you indeed of those who believe

— Saheeh International

أَءِذَا

Is (it) when

a-idhā

مِتْنَا

we have died

mit'nā

وَكُنَّا

and become

wakunnā

تُرَابًۭا

dust

turāban

وَعِظَـٰمًا

and bones

waʿiẓāman

أَءِنَّا

will we

a-innā

لَمَدِينُونَ

surely be brought to Judgment

lamadīnūna

٥٣

That when we have died and become dust and bones, we will indeed be recompensed?'"

— Saheeh International

قَالَ

He (will) say

qāla

هَلْ

Will

hal

أَنتُم

you

antum

مُّطَّلِعُونَ

be looking

muṭṭaliʿūna

٥٤

He will say,1 "Would you [care to] look?"

— Saheeh International

فَٱطَّلَعَ

Then he (will) look

fa-iṭṭalaʿa

فَرَءَاهُ

and see him

faraāhu

فِى

in

سَوَآءِ

(the) midst

sawāi

ٱلْجَحِيمِ

(of) the Hellfire

l-jaḥīmi

٥٥

And he will look and see him1 in the midst of the Hellfire.

— Saheeh International

قَالَ

He (will) say

qāla

تَٱللَّهِ

By Allah

tal-lahi

إِن

verily

in

كِدتَّ

you almost

kidtta

لَتُرْدِينِ

ruined me

latur'dīni

٥٦

He will say, "By Allāh, you almost ruined me.

— Saheeh International

وَلَوْلَا

And if not

walawlā

نِعْمَةُ

(for the) Grace

niʿ'matu

رَبِّى

(of) my Lord

rabbī

لَكُنتُ

certainly, I (would) have been

lakuntu

مِنَ

among

mina

ٱلْمُحْضَرِينَ

those brought

l-muḥ'ḍarīna

٥٧

If not for the favor of my Lord, I would have been of those brought in [to Hell].

— Saheeh International

أَفَمَا

Then are not

afamā

نَحْنُ

we

naḥnu

بِمَيِّتِينَ

(to) die

٥٨

Then, are we not to die

— Saheeh International

إِلَّا

Except

illā

مَوْتَتَنَا

our death

mawtatanā

ٱلْأُولَىٰ

the first

l-ūlā

وَمَا

and not

wamā

نَحْنُ

we

naḥnu

بِمُعَذَّبِينَ

will be punished

bimuʿadhabīna

٥٩

Except for our first death, and we will not be punished?"

— Saheeh International

إِنَّ

Indeed

inna

هَـٰذَا

this

hādhā

لَهُوَ

surely

lahuwa

ٱلْفَوْزُ

(is) the attainment

l-fawzu

ٱلْعَظِيمُ

great

l-ʿaẓīmu

٦٠

Indeed, this is the great attainment.

— Saheeh International

لِمِثْلِ

For (the) like

limith'li

هَـٰذَا

(of) this

hādhā

فَلْيَعْمَلِ

let work

falyaʿmali

ٱلْعَـٰمِلُونَ

the workers

l-ʿāmilūna

٦١

For the like of this let the workers [on earth] work.

— Saheeh International

أَذَٰلِكَ

Is that

adhālika

خَيْرٌۭ

better

khayrun

نُّزُلًا

(as) hospitality

nuzulan

أَمْ

or

am

شَجَرَةُ

(the) tree

shajaratu

ٱلزَّقُّومِ

(of) Zaqqum

l-zaqūmi

٦٢

Is that [i.e., Paradise] a better accommodation or the tree of zaqqūm?

— Saheeh International

إِنَّا

Indeed, We

innā

جَعَلْنَـٰهَا

[We] have made it

jaʿalnāhā

فِتْنَةًۭ

a trial

fit'natan

لِّلظَّـٰلِمِينَ

for the wrongdoers

lilẓẓālimīna

٦٣

Indeed, We have made it a torment for the wrongdoers.

— Saheeh International

إِنَّهَا

Indeed, it

innahā

شَجَرَةٌۭ

(is) a tree

shajaratun

تَخْرُجُ

that grows

takhruju

فِىٓ

in

أَصْلِ

(the) bottom

aṣli

ٱلْجَحِيمِ

(of) the Hellfire

l-jaḥīmi

٦٤

Indeed, it is a tree issuing from the bottom of the Hellfire,

— Saheeh International

طَلْعُهَا

Its emerging fruit

ṭalʿuhā

كَأَنَّهُۥ

(is) as if it

ka-annahu

رُءُوسُ

(was) heads

ruūsu

ٱلشَّيَـٰطِينِ

(of) the devils

l-shayāṭīni

٦٥

Its emerging fruit as if it was heads of the devils.

— Saheeh International

فَإِنَّهُمْ

And indeed, they

fa-innahum

لَـَٔاكِلُونَ

(will) surely eat

laākilūna

مِنْهَا

from it

min'hā

فَمَالِـُٔونَ

and fill

famāliūna

مِنْهَا

with it

min'hā

ٱلْبُطُونَ

(their) bellies

l-buṭūna

٦٦

And indeed, they will eat from it and fill with it their bellies.

— Saheeh International

ثُمَّ

Then

thumma

إِنَّ

indeed

inna

لَهُمْ

for them

lahum

عَلَيْهَا

in it

ʿalayhā

لَشَوْبًۭا

(is) a mixture

lashawban

مِّنْ

of

min

حَمِيمٍۢ

boiling water

ḥamīmin

٦٧

Then indeed, they will have after it a mixture of scalding water.

— Saheeh International

ثُمَّ

Then

thumma

إِنَّ

indeed

inna

مَرْجِعَهُمْ

their return

marjiʿahum

لَإِلَى

(will) surely be to

la-ilā

ٱلْجَحِيمِ

the Hellfire

l-jaḥīmi

٦٨

Then indeed, their return will be to the Hellfire.

— Saheeh International

إِنَّهُمْ

Indeed, they

innahum

أَلْفَوْا۟

found

alfaw

ءَابَآءَهُمْ

their fathers

ābāahum

ضَآلِّينَ

astray

ḍāllīna

٦٩

Indeed they found their fathers astray.

— Saheeh International

فَهُمْ

So they

fahum

عَلَىٰٓ

on

ʿalā

ءَاثَـٰرِهِمْ

their footsteps

āthārihim

يُهْرَعُونَ

they hastened

yuh'raʿūna

٧٠

So they hastened [to follow] in their footsteps.

— Saheeh International

وَلَقَدْ

And verily

walaqad

ضَلَّ

went astray

ḍalla

قَبْلَهُمْ

before them

qablahum

أَكْثَرُ

most

aktharu

ٱلْأَوَّلِينَ

(of) the former (people)

l-awalīna

٧١

And there had already strayed before them most of the former peoples,

— Saheeh International

وَلَقَدْ

And verily

walaqad

أَرْسَلْنَا

We sent

arsalnā

فِيهِم

among them

fīhim

مُّنذِرِينَ

warners

mundhirīna

٧٢

And We had already sent among them warners.

— Saheeh International

فَٱنظُرْ

Then see

fa-unẓur

كَيْفَ

how

kayfa

كَانَ

was

kāna

عَـٰقِبَةُ

(the) end

ʿāqibatu

ٱلْمُنذَرِينَ

(of) those who were warned

l-mundharīna

٧٣

Then look how was the end of those who were warned -

— Saheeh International

إِلَّا

Except

illā

عِبَادَ

(the) slaves

ʿibāda

ٱللَّهِ

(of) Allah

l-lahi

ٱلْمُخْلَصِينَ

the chosen ones

l-mukh'laṣīna

٧٤

But not the chosen servants of Allāh.

— Saheeh International

وَلَقَدْ

And verily

walaqad

نَادَىٰنَا

called Us

nādānā

نُوحٌۭ

Nuh

nūḥun

فَلَنِعْمَ

and Best

falaniʿ'ma

ٱلْمُجِيبُونَ

(are We as) Responders

l-mujībūna

٧٥

And Noah had certainly called Us, and [We are] the best of responders.

— Saheeh International

وَنَجَّيْنَـٰهُ

And We saved him

wanajjaynāhu

وَأَهْلَهُۥ

and his family

wa-ahlahu

مِنَ

from

mina

ٱلْكَرْبِ

the distress

l-karbi

ٱلْعَظِيمِ

the great

l-ʿaẓīmi

٧٦

And We saved him and his family from the great affliction.

— Saheeh International

وَجَعَلْنَا

And We made

wajaʿalnā

ذُرِّيَّتَهُۥ

his offspring

dhurriyyatahu

هُمُ

[they]

humu

ٱلْبَاقِينَ

the survivors

l-bāqīna

٧٧

And We made his descendants those remaining [on the earth]

— Saheeh International

وَتَرَكْنَا

And We left

wataraknā

عَلَيْهِ

for him

ʿalayhi

فِى

among

ٱلْـَٔاخِرِينَ

the later generations

l-ākhirīna

٧٨

And left for him [favorable mention] among later generations:

— Saheeh International

سَلَـٰمٌ

Peace be

salāmun

عَلَىٰ

upon

ʿalā

نُوحٍۢ

Nuh

nūḥin

فِى

among

ٱلْعَـٰلَمِينَ

the worlds

l-ʿālamīna

٧٩

"Peace upon Noah among the worlds."

— Saheeh International

إِنَّا

Indeed, We

innā

كَذَٰلِكَ

thus

kadhālika

نَجْزِى

[We] reward

najzī

ٱلْمُحْسِنِينَ

the good-doers

l-muḥ'sinīna

٨٠

Indeed, We thus reward the doers of good.

— Saheeh International

إِنَّهُۥ

Indeed, he

innahu

مِنْ

(was) of

min

عِبَادِنَا

Our slaves

ʿibādinā

ٱلْمُؤْمِنِينَ

believing

l-mu'minīna

٨١

Indeed, he was of Our believing servants.

— Saheeh International

ثُمَّ

Then

thumma

أَغْرَقْنَا

We drowned

aghraqnā

ٱلْـَٔاخَرِينَ

the others

l-ākharīna

٨٢

Then We drowned the others [i.e., disbelievers].

— Saheeh International

۞ وَإِنَّ

And indeed

wa-inna

مِن

among

min

شِيعَتِهِۦ

his kind

shīʿatihi

لَإِبْرَٰهِيمَ

(was) surely Ibrahim

la-ib'rāhīma

٨٣

And indeed, among his kind was Abraham,

— Saheeh International

إِذْ

When

idh

جَآءَ

he came

jāa

رَبَّهُۥ

(to) his Lord

rabbahu

بِقَلْبٍۢ

with a heart

biqalbin

سَلِيمٍ

sound

salīmin

٨٤

When he came to his Lord with a sound heart

— Saheeh International

إِذْ

When

idh

قَالَ

he said

qāla

لِأَبِيهِ

to his father

li-abīhi

وَقَوْمِهِۦ

and his people

waqawmihi

مَاذَا

What is it

mādhā

تَعْبُدُونَ

you worship

taʿbudūna

٨٥

[And] when he said to his father and his people, "What do you worship?

— Saheeh International

أَئِفْكًا

Is it falsehood

a-if'kan

ءَالِهَةًۭ

gods

ālihatan

دُونَ

other than

dūna

ٱللَّهِ

Allah

l-lahi

تُرِيدُونَ

(that) you desire

turīdūna

٨٦

Is it falsehood [as] gods other than Allāh you desire?

— Saheeh International

فَمَا

Then what

famā

ظَنُّكُم

(do) you think

ẓannukum

بِرَبِّ

about (the) Lord

birabbi

ٱلْعَـٰلَمِينَ

(of) the worlds

l-ʿālamīna

٨٧

Then what is your thought about the Lord of the worlds?"

— Saheeh International

فَنَظَرَ

Then he glanced

fanaẓara

نَظْرَةًۭ

a glance

naẓratan

فِى

at

ٱلنُّجُومِ

the stars

l-nujūmi

٨٨

And he cast a look at the stars.

— Saheeh International

فَقَالَ

And he said

faqāla

إِنِّى

Indeed, I am

innī

سَقِيمٌۭ

sick

saqīmun

٨٩

And said, "Indeed, I am [about to be] ill."

— Saheeh International

فَتَوَلَّوْا۟

So they turned away

fatawallaw

عَنْهُ

from him

ʿanhu

مُدْبِرِينَ

departing

mud'birīna

٩٠

So they turned away from him, departing.

— Saheeh International

فَرَاغَ

Then he turned

farāgha

إِلَىٰٓ

to

ilā

ءَالِهَتِهِمْ

their gods

ālihatihim

فَقَالَ

and said

faqāla

أَلَا

Do not

alā

تَأْكُلُونَ

you eat

takulūna

٩١

Then he turned to their gods and said, "Do you not eat?1

— Saheeh International

مَا

What (is)

لَكُمْ

for you

lakum

لَا

not

تَنطِقُونَ

you speak

tanṭiqūna

٩٢

What is [wrong] with you that you do not speak?".

— Saheeh International

فَرَاغَ

Then he turned

farāgha

عَلَيْهِمْ

upon them

ʿalayhim

ضَرْبًۢا

striking

ḍarban

بِٱلْيَمِينِ

with the right hand

bil-yamīni

٩٣

And he turned upon them a blow with [his] right hand.

— Saheeh International

فَأَقْبَلُوٓا۟

Then they advanced

fa-aqbalū

إِلَيْهِ

towards him

ilayhi

يَزِفُّونَ

hastening

yaziffūna

٩٤

Then they [i.e., the people] came toward him, hastening.

— Saheeh International

قَالَ

He said

qāla

أَتَعْبُدُونَ

Do you worship

ataʿbudūna

مَا

what

تَنْحِتُونَ

you carve

tanḥitūna

٩٥

He said, "Do you worship that which you [yourselves] carve,

— Saheeh International

وَٱللَّهُ

While Allah

wal-lahu

خَلَقَكُمْ

created you

khalaqakum

وَمَا

and what

wamā

تَعْمَلُونَ

you make

taʿmalūna

٩٦

While Allāh created you and that which you do?"

— Saheeh International

قَالُوا۟

They said

qālū

ٱبْنُوا۟

Build

ib'nū

لَهُۥ

for him

lahu

بُنْيَـٰنًۭا

a structure

bun'yānan

فَأَلْقُوهُ

and throw him

fa-alqūhu

فِى

into

ٱلْجَحِيمِ

the blazing Fire

l-jaḥīmi

٩٧

They said, "Construct for him a structure [i.e., furnace] and throw him into the burning fire."

— Saheeh International

فَأَرَادُوا۟

And they intended

fa-arādū

بِهِۦ

for him

bihi

كَيْدًۭا

a plot

kaydan

فَجَعَلْنَـٰهُمُ

but We made them

fajaʿalnāhumu

ٱلْأَسْفَلِينَ

the lowest

l-asfalīna

٩٨

And they intended for him a plan [i.e., harm], but We made them the most debased.

— Saheeh International

وَقَالَ

And he said

waqāla

إِنِّى

Indeed, I am

innī

ذَاهِبٌ

going

dhāhibun

إِلَىٰ

to

ilā

رَبِّى

my Lord

rabbī

سَيَهْدِينِ

He will guide me

sayahdīni

٩٩

And [then] he said, "Indeed, I will go to [where I am ordered by] my Lord; He will guide me.

— Saheeh International

رَبِّ

My Lord

rabbi

هَبْ

grant

hab

لِى

me

مِنَ

of

mina

ٱلصَّـٰلِحِينَ

the righteous

l-ṣāliḥīna

١٠٠

My Lord, grant me [a child] from among the righteous."

— Saheeh International

فَبَشَّرْنَـٰهُ

So We gave him the glad tidings

fabasharnāhu

بِغُلَـٰمٍ

of a boy

bighulāmin

حَلِيمٍۢ

forbearing

ḥalīmin

١٠١

So We gave him good tidings of a forbearing boy.

— Saheeh International

فَلَمَّا

Then when

falammā

بَلَغَ

he reached

balagha

مَعَهُ

the (age of) working with him

maʿahu

ٱلسَّعْىَ

the (age of) working with him

l-saʿya

قَالَ

he said

qāla

يَـٰبُنَىَّ

O my son

yābunayya

إِنِّىٓ

Indeed, I

innī

أَرَىٰ

have seen

arā

فِى

in

ٱلْمَنَامِ

the dream

l-manāmi

أَنِّىٓ

that I am

annī

أَذْبَحُكَ

sacrificing you

adhbaḥuka

فَٱنظُرْ

so look

fa-unẓur

مَاذَا

what

mādhā

تَرَىٰ ۚ

you see

tarā

قَالَ

He said

qāla

يَـٰٓأَبَتِ

O my father

yāabati

ٱفْعَلْ

Do

if'ʿal

مَا

what

تُؤْمَرُ ۖ

you are commanded

tu'maru

سَتَجِدُنِىٓ

You will find me

satajidunī

إِن

if

in

شَآءَ

Allah wills

shāa

ٱللَّهُ

Allah wills

l-lahu

مِنَ

of

mina

ٱلصَّـٰبِرِينَ

the patient ones

l-ṣābirīna

١٠٢

And when he reached with him [the age of] exertion,1 he said, "O my son, indeed I have seen in a dream that I [must] sacrifice you, so see what you think." He said, "O my father, do as you are commanded. You will find me, if Allāh wills, of the steadfast."

— Saheeh International

فَلَمَّآ

Then when

falammā

أَسْلَمَا

both of them had submitted

aslamā

وَتَلَّهُۥ

and he put him down

watallahu

لِلْجَبِينِ

upon his forehead

lil'jabīni

١٠٣

And when they had both submitted1 and he put him down upon his forehead,

— Saheeh International

وَنَـٰدَيْنَـٰهُ

And We called out to him

wanādaynāhu

أَن

that

an

يَـٰٓإِبْرَٰهِيمُ

O Ibrahim

yāib'rāhīmu

١٠٤

We called to him, "O Abraham,

— Saheeh International

قَدْ

Verily

qad

صَدَّقْتَ

you have fulfilled

ṣaddaqta

ٱلرُّءْيَآ ۚ

the vision

l-ru'yā

إِنَّا

Indeed, We

innā

كَذَٰلِكَ

thus

kadhālika

نَجْزِى

[We] reward

najzī

ٱلْمُحْسِنِينَ

the good-doers

l-muḥ'sinīna

١٠٥

You have fulfilled the vision." Indeed, We thus reward the doers of good.

— Saheeh International

إِنَّ

Indeed

inna

هَـٰذَا

this

hādhā

لَهُوَ

(was) surely [it]

lahuwa

ٱلْبَلَـٰٓؤُا۟

the trial

l-balāu

ٱلْمُبِينُ

clear

l-mubīnu

١٠٦

Indeed, this was the clear trial.

— Saheeh International

وَفَدَيْنَـٰهُ

And We ransomed him

wafadaynāhu

بِذِبْحٍ

with a sacrifice

bidhib'ḥin

عَظِيمٍۢ

great

ʿaẓīmin

١٠٧

And We ransomed him with a great sacrifice,1

— Saheeh International

وَتَرَكْنَا

And We left

wataraknā

عَلَيْهِ

for him

ʿalayhi

فِى

among

ٱلْـَٔاخِرِينَ

the later generations

l-ākhirīna

١٠٨

And We left for him [favorable mention] among later generations:

— Saheeh International

سَلَـٰمٌ

Peace be

salāmun

عَلَىٰٓ

on

ʿalā

إِبْرَٰهِيمَ

Ibrahim

ib'rāhīma

١٠٩

"Peace upon Abraham."

— Saheeh International

كَذَٰلِكَ

Thus

kadhālika

نَجْزِى

We reward

najzī

ٱلْمُحْسِنِينَ

the good-doers

l-muḥ'sinīna

١١٠

Indeed, We thus reward the doers of good.

— Saheeh International

إِنَّهُۥ

Indeed, he (was)

innahu

مِنْ

of

min

عِبَادِنَا

Our slaves

ʿibādinā

ٱلْمُؤْمِنِينَ

believing

l-mu'minīna

١١١

Indeed, he was of Our believing servants.

— Saheeh International

وَبَشَّرْنَـٰهُ

And We gave him glad tidings

wabasharnāhu

بِإِسْحَـٰقَ

of Isaac

bi-is'ḥāqa

نَبِيًّۭا

a Prophet

nabiyyan

مِّنَ

among

mina

ٱلصَّـٰلِحِينَ

the righteous

l-ṣāliḥīna

١١٢

And We gave him good tidings of Isaac, a prophet from among the righteous.1

— Saheeh International

وَبَـٰرَكْنَا

And We blessed

wabāraknā

عَلَيْهِ

him

ʿalayhi

وَعَلَىٰٓ

and [on]

waʿalā

إِسْحَـٰقَ ۚ

Isaac

is'ḥāqa

وَمِن

And of

wamin

ذُرِّيَّتِهِمَا

their offspring

dhurriyyatihimā

مُحْسِنٌۭ

(are) good-doers

muḥ'sinun

وَظَالِمٌۭ

and unjust

waẓālimun

لِّنَفْسِهِۦ

to himself

linafsihi

مُبِينٌۭ

clear

mubīnun

١١٣

And We blessed him and Isaac. But among their descendants is the doer of good and the clearly unjust to himself [i.e., sinner].

— Saheeh International

وَلَقَدْ

And verily

walaqad

مَنَنَّا

We conferred Favor

manannā

عَلَىٰ

upon

ʿalā

مُوسَىٰ

Musa

mūsā

وَهَـٰرُونَ

and Harun

wahārūna

١١٤

And We did certainly confer favor upon Moses and Aaron.

— Saheeh International

وَنَجَّيْنَـٰهُمَا

And We saved both of them

wanajjaynāhumā

وَقَوْمَهُمَا

and their people

waqawmahumā

مِنَ

from

mina

ٱلْكَرْبِ

the distress

l-karbi

ٱلْعَظِيمِ

the great

l-ʿaẓīmi

١١٥

And We saved them and their people from the great affliction,

— Saheeh International

وَنَصَرْنَـٰهُمْ

And We helped them

wanaṣarnāhum

فَكَانُوا۟

so they became

fakānū

هُمُ

so they became

humu

ٱلْغَـٰلِبِينَ

the victors

l-ghālibīna

١١٦

And We supported them so it was they who overcame.

— Saheeh International

وَءَاتَيْنَـٰهُمَا

And We gave both of them

waātaynāhumā

ٱلْكِتَـٰبَ

the Book

l-kitāba

ٱلْمُسْتَبِينَ

the clear

l-mus'tabīna

١١٧

And We gave them the explicit Scripture [i.e., the Torah],

— Saheeh International

وَهَدَيْنَـٰهُمَا

And We guided both of them

wahadaynāhumā

ٱلصِّرَٰطَ

(to) the Path

l-ṣirāṭa

ٱلْمُسْتَقِيمَ

the Straight

l-mus'taqīma

١١٨

And We guided them on the straight path.

— Saheeh International

وَتَرَكْنَا

And We left

wataraknā

عَلَيْهِمَا

for both of them

ʿalayhimā

فِى

among

ٱلْـَٔاخِرِينَ

the later generations

l-ākhirīna

١١٩

And We left for them [favorable mention] among later generations:

— Saheeh International

سَلَـٰمٌ

Peace be

salāmun

عَلَىٰ

upon

ʿalā

مُوسَىٰ

Musa

mūsā

وَهَـٰرُونَ

and Harun

wahārūna

١٢٠

"Peace upon Moses and Aaron."

— Saheeh International

إِنَّا

Indeed, We

innā

كَذَٰلِكَ

thus

kadhālika

نَجْزِى

reward

najzī

ٱلْمُحْسِنِينَ

the good-doers

l-muḥ'sinīna

١٢١

Indeed, We thus reward the doers of good.

— Saheeh International

إِنَّهُمَا

Indeed, both of them

innahumā

مِنْ

(were) of

min

عِبَادِنَا

Our slaves

ʿibādinā

ٱلْمُؤْمِنِينَ

believing

l-mu'minīna

١٢٢

Indeed, they were of Our believing servants.

— Saheeh International

وَإِنَّ

And indeed

wa-inna

إِلْيَاسَ

Elijah

il'yāsa

لَمِنَ

(was) surely of

lamina

ٱلْمُرْسَلِينَ

the Messengers

l-mur'salīna

١٢٣

And indeed, Elias was from among the messengers,

— Saheeh International

إِذْ

When

idh

قَالَ

he said

qāla

لِقَوْمِهِۦٓ

to his people

liqawmihi

أَلَا

Will not

alā

تَتَّقُونَ

you fear

tattaqūna

١٢٤

When he said to his people, "Will you not fear Allāh?

— Saheeh International

أَتَدْعُونَ

Do you call

atadʿūna

بَعْلًۭا

Baal

baʿlan

وَتَذَرُونَ

and you forsake

watadharūna

أَحْسَنَ

(the) Best

aḥsana

ٱلْخَـٰلِقِينَ

(of) Creators

l-khāliqīna

١٢٥

Do you call upon Baʿl1 and leave the best of creators -

— Saheeh International

ٱللَّهَ

Allah

al-laha

رَبَّكُمْ

your Lord

rabbakum

وَرَبَّ

and (the) Lord

warabba

ءَابَآئِكُمُ

(of) your forefathers

ābāikumu

ٱلْأَوَّلِينَ

(of) your forefathers

l-awalīna

١٢٦

Allāh, your Lord and the Lord of your first forefathers?"

— Saheeh International

فَكَذَّبُوهُ

But they denied him

fakadhabūhu

فَإِنَّهُمْ

so indeed, they

fa-innahum

لَمُحْضَرُونَ

(will) surely be brought

lamuḥ'ḍarūna

١٢٧

And they denied him, so indeed, they will be brought [for punishment],

— Saheeh International

إِلَّا

Except

illā

عِبَادَ

(the) slaves

ʿibāda

ٱللَّهِ

(of) Allah

l-lahi

ٱلْمُخْلَصِينَ

the chosen ones

l-mukh'laṣīna

١٢٨

Except the chosen servants of Allāh.

— Saheeh International

وَتَرَكْنَا

And We left

wataraknā

عَلَيْهِ

for him

ʿalayhi

فِى

among

ٱلْـَٔاخِرِينَ

the later generations

l-ākhirīna

١٢٩

And We left for him [favorable mention] among later generations:

— Saheeh International

سَلَـٰمٌ

Peace be

salāmun

عَلَىٰٓ

upon

ʿalā

إِلْ يَاسِينَ

Elijah

il yāsīna

١٣٠

"Peace upon Elias."1

— Saheeh International

إِنَّا

Indeed, We

innā

كَذَٰلِكَ

thus

kadhālika

نَجْزِى

reward

najzī

ٱلْمُحْسِنِينَ

the good-doers

l-muḥ'sinīna

١٣١

Indeed, We thus reward the doers of good.

— Saheeh International

إِنَّهُۥ

Indeed, he (was)

innahu

مِنْ

of

min

عِبَادِنَا

Our slaves

ʿibādinā

ٱلْمُؤْمِنِينَ

believing

l-mu'minīna

١٣٢

Indeed, he was of Our believing servants.

— Saheeh International

وَإِنَّ

And indeed

wa-inna

لُوطًۭا

Lut

lūṭan

لَّمِنَ

(was) of

lamina

ٱلْمُرْسَلِينَ

the Messengers

l-mur'salīna

١٣٣

And indeed, Lot was among the messengers.

— Saheeh International

إِذْ

When

idh

نَجَّيْنَـٰهُ

We saved him

najjaynāhu

وَأَهْلَهُۥٓ

and his family

wa-ahlahu

أَجْمَعِينَ

all

ajmaʿīna

١٣٤

[So mention] when We saved him and his family, all,

— Saheeh International

إِلَّا

Except

illā

عَجُوزًۭا

an old woman

ʿajūzan

فِى

(was) among

ٱلْغَـٰبِرِينَ

those who remained behind

l-ghābirīna

١٣٥

Except an old woman [i.e., his wife] among those who remained [with the evildoers].

— Saheeh International

ثُمَّ

Then

thumma

دَمَّرْنَا

We destroyed

dammarnā

ٱلْـَٔاخَرِينَ

the others

l-ākharīna

١٣٦

Then We destroyed the others.

— Saheeh International

وَإِنَّكُمْ

And indeed, you

wa-innakum

لَتَمُرُّونَ

surely pass

latamurrūna

عَلَيْهِم

by them

ʿalayhim

مُّصْبِحِينَ

(in the) morning

muṣ'biḥīna

١٣٧

And indeed, you pass by them in the morning

— Saheeh International

وَبِٱلَّيْلِ ۗ

And at night

wabi-al-layli

أَفَلَا

Then will not

afalā

تَعْقِلُونَ

you use reason

taʿqilūna

١٣٨

And at night. Then will you not use reason?

— Saheeh International

وَإِنَّ

And indeed

wa-inna

يُونُسَ

Yunus

yūnusa

لَمِنَ

(was) surely of

lamina

ٱلْمُرْسَلِينَ

the Messengers

l-mur'salīna

١٣٩

And indeed, Jonah was among the messengers.

— Saheeh International

إِذْ

When

idh

أَبَقَ

he ran away

abaqa

إِلَى

to

ilā

ٱلْفُلْكِ

the ship

l-ful'ki

ٱلْمَشْحُونِ

laden

l-mashḥūni

١٤٠

[Mention] when he ran away to the laden ship.

— Saheeh International

فَسَاهَمَ

Then he drew lots

fasāhama

فَكَانَ

and was

fakāna

مِنَ

of

mina

ٱلْمُدْحَضِينَ

the losers

l-mud'ḥaḍīna

١٤١

And he drew lots1 and was among the losers.

— Saheeh International

فَٱلْتَقَمَهُ

Then swallowed him

fal-taqamahu

ٱلْحُوتُ

the fish

l-ḥūtu

وَهُوَ

while he

wahuwa

مُلِيمٌۭ

(was) blameworthy

mulīmun

١٤٢

Then the fish swallowed him, while he was blameworthy.1

— Saheeh International

فَلَوْلَآ

And if not

falawlā

أَنَّهُۥ

that he

annahu

كَانَ

was

kāna

مِنَ

of

mina

ٱلْمُسَبِّحِينَ

those who glorify

l-musabiḥīna

١٤٣

And had he not been of those who exalt Allāh,

— Saheeh International

لَلَبِثَ

Certainly, he (would have) remained

lalabitha

فِى

in

بَطْنِهِۦٓ

its belly

baṭnihi

إِلَىٰ

until

ilā

يَوْمِ

the Day

yawmi

يُبْعَثُونَ

they are resurrected

yub'ʿathūna

١٤٤

He would have remained inside its belly until the Day they are resurrected.1

— Saheeh International

۞ فَنَبَذْنَـٰهُ

But We cast him

fanabadhnāhu

بِٱلْعَرَآءِ

onto the open shore

bil-ʿarāi

وَهُوَ

while he

wahuwa

سَقِيمٌۭ

(was) ill

saqīmun

١٤٥

But We threw him onto the open shore while he was ill.

— Saheeh International

وَأَنۢبَتْنَا

And We caused to grow

wa-anbatnā

عَلَيْهِ

over him

ʿalayhi

شَجَرَةًۭ

a plant

shajaratan

مِّن

of

min

يَقْطِينٍۢ

gourd

yaqṭīnin

١٤٦

And We caused to grow over him a gourd vine.1

— Saheeh International

وَأَرْسَلْنَـٰهُ

And We sent him

wa-arsalnāhu

إِلَىٰ

to

ilā

مِا۟ئَةِ

a hundred

mi-ati

أَلْفٍ

thousand

alfin

أَوْ

or

aw

يَزِيدُونَ

more

yazīdūna

١٤٧

And We sent him1 to [his people of] a hundred thousand or more.

— Saheeh International

فَـَٔامَنُوا۟

And they believed

faāmanū

فَمَتَّعْنَـٰهُمْ

so We gave them enjoyment

famattaʿnāhum

إِلَىٰ

for

ilā

حِينٍۢ

a while

ḥīnin

١٤٨

And they believed, so We gave them enjoyment [of life] for a time.

— Saheeh International

فَٱسْتَفْتِهِمْ

Then ask them

fa-is'taftihim

أَلِرَبِّكَ

Does your Lord

alirabbika

ٱلْبَنَاتُ

(have) daughters

l-banātu

وَلَهُمُ

while for them

walahumu

ٱلْبَنُونَ

(are) sons

l-banūna

١٤٩

So inquire of them, [O Muḥammad], "Does your Lord have daughters while they have sons?1

— Saheeh International

أَمْ

Or

am

خَلَقْنَا

did We create

khalaqnā

ٱلْمَلَـٰٓئِكَةَ

the Angels

l-malāikata

إِنَـٰثًۭا

females

ināthan

وَهُمْ

while they

wahum

شَـٰهِدُونَ

(were) witnesses

shāhidūna

١٥٠

Or did We create the angels as females while they were witnesses?"

— Saheeh International

أَلَآ

No doubt

alā

إِنَّهُم

indeed, they

innahum

مِّنْ

of

min

إِفْكِهِمْ

their falsehood

if'kihim

لَيَقُولُونَ

[they] say

layaqūlūna

١٥١

Unquestionably, it is out of their [invented] falsehood that they say,

— Saheeh International

وَلَدَ

Allah has begotten

walada

ٱللَّهُ

Allah has begotten

l-lahu

وَإِنَّهُمْ

and indeed, they

wa-innahum

لَكَـٰذِبُونَ

surely (are) liars

lakādhibūna

١٥٢

"Allāh has begotten," and indeed, they are liars.

— Saheeh International

أَصْطَفَى

Has He chosen

aṣṭafā

ٱلْبَنَاتِ

[the] daughters

l-banāti

عَلَى

over

ʿalā

ٱلْبَنِينَ

sons

l-banīna

١٥٣

Has He chosen daughters over sons?

— Saheeh International

مَا

What is with you

لَكُمْ

What is with you

lakum

كَيْفَ

How

kayfa

تَحْكُمُونَ

you judge

taḥkumūna

١٥٤

What is [wrong] with you? How do you make judgement?

— Saheeh International

أَفَلَا

Then will not

afalā

تَذَكَّرُونَ

you pay heed

tadhakkarūna

١٥٥

Then will you not be reminded?

— Saheeh International

أَمْ

Or

am

لَكُمْ

(is) for you

lakum

سُلْطَـٰنٌۭ

an authority

sul'ṭānun

مُّبِينٌۭ

clear

mubīnun

١٥٦

Or do you have a clear authority?1

— Saheeh International

فَأْتُوا۟

Then bring

fatū

بِكِتَـٰبِكُمْ

your book

bikitābikum

إِن

if

in

كُنتُمْ

you are

kuntum

صَـٰدِقِينَ

truthful

ṣādiqīna

١٥٧

Then produce your scripture, if you should be truthful.

— Saheeh International

وَجَعَلُوا۟

And they have made

wajaʿalū

بَيْنَهُۥ

between Him

baynahu

وَبَيْنَ

and between

wabayna

ٱلْجِنَّةِ

the jinn

l-jinati

نَسَبًۭا ۚ

a relationship

nasaban

وَلَقَدْ

but certainly

walaqad

عَلِمَتِ

know

ʿalimati

ٱلْجِنَّةُ

the jinn

l-jinatu

إِنَّهُمْ

that they

innahum

لَمُحْضَرُونَ

(will) surely be brought

lamuḥ'ḍarūna

١٥٨

And they have made [i.e., claimed] between Him and the jinn a lineage, but the jinn have already known that they [who made such claims] will be brought [to punishment].

— Saheeh International

سُبْحَـٰنَ

Glory be

sub'ḥāna

ٱللَّهِ

(to) Allah

l-lahi

عَمَّا

above what

ʿammā

يَصِفُونَ

they attribute

yaṣifūna

١٥٩

Exalted is Allāh above what they describe,

— Saheeh International

إِلَّا

Except

illā

عِبَادَ

(the) slaves

ʿibāda

ٱللَّهِ

(of) Allah

l-lahi

ٱلْمُخْلَصِينَ

the chosen

l-mukh'laṣīna

١٦٠

Except the chosen servants of Allāh [who do not share in that sin].

— Saheeh International

فَإِنَّكُمْ

So indeed, you

fa-innakum

وَمَا

and what

wamā

تَعْبُدُونَ

you worship

taʿbudūna

١٦١

So indeed, you [disbelievers] and whatever you worship,

— Saheeh International

مَآ

Not

أَنتُمْ

you

antum

عَلَيْهِ

from Him

ʿalayhi

بِفَـٰتِنِينَ

can tempt away (anyone)

bifātinīna

١٦٢

You cannot tempt [anyone] away from Him

— Saheeh International

إِلَّا

Except

illā

مَنْ

who

man

هُوَ

he

huwa

صَالِ

(is) to burn

ṣāli

ٱلْجَحِيمِ

(in) the Hellfire

l-jaḥīmi

١٦٣

Except he who is to [enter and] burn in the Hellfire.1

— Saheeh International

وَمَا

And not

wamā

مِنَّآ

among us

minnā

إِلَّا

except

illā

لَهُۥ

for him

lahu

مَقَامٌۭ

(is) a position

maqāmun

مَّعْلُومٌۭ

known

maʿlūmun

١٦٤

[The angels say],1 "There is not among us any except that he has a known position.2

— Saheeh International

وَإِنَّا

And indeed, we

wa-innā

لَنَحْنُ

surely, [we]

lanaḥnu

ٱلصَّآفُّونَ

stand in rows

l-ṣāfūna

١٦٥

And indeed, we are those who line up [for prayer].

— Saheeh International

وَإِنَّا

And indeed, we

wa-innā

لَنَحْنُ

surely, [we]

lanaḥnu

ٱلْمُسَبِّحُونَ

glorify (Allah)

l-musabiḥūna

١٦٦

And indeed, we are those who exalt Allāh."

— Saheeh International

وَإِن

And indeed

wa-in

كَانُوا۟

they used to

kānū

لَيَقُولُونَ

say

layaqūlūna

١٦٧

And indeed, they [i.e., the disbelievers] used to say,1

— Saheeh International

لَوْ

If

law

أَنَّ

that

anna

عِندَنَا

we had

ʿindanā

ذِكْرًۭا

a reminder

dhik'ran

مِّنَ

from

mina

ٱلْأَوَّلِينَ

the former (people)

l-awalīna

١٦٨

"If we had a message from [those of] the former peoples,

— Saheeh International

لَكُنَّا

Certainly, we (would) have been

lakunnā

عِبَادَ

slaves

ʿibāda

ٱللَّهِ

(of) Allah

l-lahi

ٱلْمُخْلَصِينَ

the chosen

l-mukh'laṣīna

١٦٩

We would have been the chosen servants of Allāh."

— Saheeh International

فَكَفَرُوا۟

But they disbelieved

fakafarū

بِهِۦ ۖ

in it

bihi

فَسَوْفَ

so soon

fasawfa

يَعْلَمُونَ

they will know

yaʿlamūna

١٧٠

But they disbelieved in it,1 so they are going to know.

— Saheeh International

وَلَقَدْ

And verily

walaqad

سَبَقَتْ

has preceded

sabaqat

كَلِمَتُنَا

Our Word

kalimatunā

لِعِبَادِنَا

for Our slaves

liʿibādinā

ٱلْمُرْسَلِينَ

the Messengers

l-mur'salīna

١٧١

And Our word [i.e., decree] has already preceded for Our servants, the messengers,

— Saheeh International

إِنَّهُمْ

Indeed they

innahum

لَهُمُ

surely they

lahumu

ٱلْمَنصُورُونَ

(would be) the victorious

l-manṣūrūna

١٧٢

[That] indeed, they would be those given victory

— Saheeh International

وَإِنَّ

And indeed

wa-inna

جُندَنَا

Our host

jundanā

لَهُمُ

surely, they

lahumu

ٱلْغَـٰلِبُونَ

(will be) those who overcome

l-ghālibūna

١٧٣

And [that] indeed, Our soldiers [i.e., the believers] will be those who overcome.1

— Saheeh International

فَتَوَلَّ

So turn away

fatawalla

عَنْهُمْ

from them

ʿanhum

حَتَّىٰ

until

ḥattā

حِينٍۢ

a time

ḥīnin

١٧٤

So, [O Muḥammad], leave them for a time.

— Saheeh International

وَأَبْصِرْهُمْ

And see them

wa-abṣir'hum

فَسَوْفَ

so soon

fasawfa

يُبْصِرُونَ

they will see

yub'ṣirūna

١٧٥

And see [what will befall] them, for they are going to see.

— Saheeh International

أَفَبِعَذَابِنَا

Then is (it) for Our punishment

afabiʿadhābinā

يَسْتَعْجِلُونَ

they hasten

yastaʿjilūna

١٧٦

Then for Our punishment are they impatient?

— Saheeh International

فَإِذَا

But when

fa-idhā

نَزَلَ

it descends

nazala

بِسَاحَتِهِمْ

in their territory

bisāḥatihim

فَسَآءَ

then evil (will be)

fasāa

صَبَاحُ

(the) morning

ṣabāḥu

ٱلْمُنذَرِينَ

(for) those who were warned

l-mundharīna

١٧٧

But when it descends in their territory, then evil is the morning of those who were warned.

— Saheeh International

وَتَوَلَّ

So turn away

watawalla

عَنْهُمْ

from them

ʿanhum

حَتَّىٰ

for

ḥattā

حِينٍۢ

a time

ḥīnin

١٧٨

And leave them for a time.

— Saheeh International

وَأَبْصِرْ

And see

wa-abṣir

فَسَوْفَ

so soon

fasawfa

يُبْصِرُونَ

they will see

yub'ṣirūna

١٧٩

And see, for they are going to see.

— Saheeh International

سُبْحَـٰنَ

Glory

sub'ḥāna

رَبِّكَ

(be to) your Lord

rabbika

رَبِّ

(the) Lord

rabbi

ٱلْعِزَّةِ

(of) Honor

l-ʿizati

عَمَّا

above what

ʿammā

يَصِفُونَ

they attribute

yaṣifūna

١٨٠

Exalted is your Lord, the Lord of might, above what they describe.

— Saheeh International

وَسَلَـٰمٌ

And peace be

wasalāmun

عَلَى

upon

ʿalā

ٱلْمُرْسَلِينَ

the Messengers

l-mur'salīna

١٨١

And peace upon the messengers.

— Saheeh International

وَٱلْحَمْدُ

And all praise

wal-ḥamdu

لِلَّهِ

(be) to Allah

lillahi

رَبِّ

(the) Lord

rabbi

ٱلْعَـٰلَمِينَ

(of) the worlds

l-ʿālamīna

١٨٢

And praise to Allāh, Lord of the worlds.
