Aş-Şāffāt
Those who set the Ranks
﷽
الصافات
وَٱلصَّـٰٓفَّـٰتِ By those lined wal-ṣāfāti (in) rows ṣaffan
By those [angels] lined up in rows
فَٱلزَّٰجِرَٰتِ And those who drive fal-zājirāti strongly zajran
And those who drive [the clouds]
فَٱلتَّـٰلِيَـٰتِ And those who recite fal-tāliyāti (the) Message dhik'ran
And those who recite the message,1
إِنَّ Indeed inna your Lord ilāhakum (is) surely One lawāḥidun
Indeed, your God is One,
رَّبُّ Lord rabbu (of) the heavens l-samāwāti and the earth wal-arḍi and what wamā (is) between both of them baynahumā and Lord warabbu (of) each point of sunrise l-mashāriqi
Lord of the heavens and the earth and that between them and Lord of the sunrises.1
إِنَّا Indeed, We innā [We] adorned zayyannā the sky l-samāa [the world] l-dun'yā with an adornment bizīnatin (of) the stars l-kawākibi
Indeed, We have adorned the nearest heaven with an adornment of stars
وَحِفْظًۭا And (to) guard waḥif'ẓan against min every kulli devil shayṭānin rebellious māridin
And as protection against every rebellious devil
لَّا Not lā they may listen yassammaʿūna to ilā the assembly l-mala-i [the] exalted l-aʿlā are pelted wayuq'dhafūna from min every kulli side jānibin
[So] they may not listen to the exalted assembly [of angels] and are pelted from every side,1
دُحُورًۭا ۖ Repelled duḥūran and for them walahum (is) a punishment ʿadhābun perpetual wāṣibun
Repelled; and for them is a constant punishment,
إِلَّا Except illā (him) who man snatches khaṭifa (by) theft l-khaṭfata but follows him fa-atbaʿahu a burning flame shihābun piercing thāqibun
Except one who snatches [some words] by theft, but they are pursued by a burning flame, piercing [in brightness].
فَٱسْتَفْتِهِمْ Then ask them fa-is'taftihim Are they ahum a stronger ashaddu creation khalqan or am (those) whom man We have created khalaqnā Indeed, We innā created them khalaqnāhum from min a clay ṭīnin sticky lāzibin
Then inquire of them, [O Muḥammad], "Are they a stronger [or more difficult] creation or those [others] We have created?" Indeed, We created them [i.e., men] from sticky clay.
بَلْ Nay bal you wonder ʿajib'ta while they mock wayaskharūna
But you wonder, while they mock,
وَإِذَا And when wa-idhā they are reminded dhukkirū not lā they receive admonition yadhkurūna
And when they are reminded, they remember not.
وَإِذَا And when wa-idhā they see ra-aw a Sign āyatan they mock yastaskhirūna
And when they see a sign, they ridicule.
وَقَالُوٓا۟ And they say waqālū Not in (is) this hādhā except illā a magic siḥ'run clear mubīnun
And say, "This is not but obvious magic.
أَءِذَا Is it when a-idhā we are dead mit'nā and have become wakunnā dust turāban and bones waʿiẓāman shall we then a-innā be certainly resurrected lamabʿūthūna
When we have died and become dust and bones, are we indeed to be resurrected?
أَوَءَابَآؤُنَا Or our fathers awaābāunā former l-awalūna
And our forefathers [as well]?"
قُلْ Say qul Yes naʿam and you wa-antum (will be) humiliated dākhirūna
Say, "Yes, and you will be [rendered] contemptible."
فَإِنَّمَا Then only fa-innamā it hiya (will be) a cry zajratun single wāḥidatun then, behold fa-idhā They hum will see yanẓurūna
It will be only one shout, and at once they will be observing.
وَقَالُوا۟ And they will say waqālū O woe to us yāwaylanā This hādhā (is the) Day yawmu (of) the Recompense l-dīni
They will say, "O woe to us! This is the Day of Recompense."
هَـٰذَا This hādhā (is the) Day yawmu (of) Judgment l-faṣli which alladhī you used to kuntum [of it] bihi deny tukadhibūna
[They will be told], "This is the Day of Judgement which you used to deny."
۞ ٱحْشُرُوا۟ Gather uḥ'shurū those who alladhīna wronged ẓalamū and their kinds wa-azwājahum and what wamā they used (to) kānū worship yaʿbudūna
[The angels will be ordered], "Gather those who committed wrong, their kinds,1 and what they used to worship
مِن Besides min Besides dūni Allah l-lahi then lead them fa-ih'dūhum to ilā (the) Path ṣirāṭi (of) the Hellfire l-jaḥīmi
Other than Allāh, and guide them to the path of Hellfire
وَقِفُوهُمْ ۖ And stop them waqifūhum indeed, they innahum (are) to be questioned masūlūna
And stop them; indeed, they are to be questioned."
مَا What mā (is) for you lakum (Why) not lā you help one another tanāṣarūna
[They will be asked], "What is [wrong] with you? Why do you not help each other?"
بَلْ Nay bal they humu (on) that Day l-yawma (will) surrender mus'taslimūna
But they, that Day, are in surrender.
وَأَقْبَلَ And will approach wa-aqbala some of them baʿḍuhum to ʿalā others baʿḍin questioning one another yatasāalūna
And they will approach one another asking [i.e., blaming] each other.
قَالُوٓا۟ They will say qālū Indeed, you innakum [you] used (to) kuntum come (to) us tatūnanā from ʿani the right l-yamīni
They will say, "Indeed, you used to come at us from the right."1
قَالُوا۟ They will say qālū Nay bal not lam you were takūnū believers mu'minīna
They [i.e., the oppressors] will say, "Rather, you [yourselves] were not believers,
وَمَا And not wamā was kāna for us lanā over you ʿalaykum any min authority sul'ṭānin Nay bal you were kuntum a people qawman transgressing ṭāghīna
And we had over you no authority, but you were a transgressing people.
فَحَقَّ So has been proved true faḥaqqa against us ʿalaynā (the) Word qawlu (of) our Lord rabbinā indeed, we innā (will) certainly taste ladhāiqūna
So the word [i.e., decree] of our Lord has come into effect upon us; indeed, we will taste [punishment].
فَأَغْوَيْنَـٰكُمْ So we led you astray fa-aghwaynākum indeed, we innā were kunnā astray ghāwīna
And we led you to deviation; indeed, we were deviators."
فَإِنَّهُمْ Then indeed, they fa-innahum that Day yawma-idhin in fī the punishment l-ʿadhābi (will be) sharers mush'tarikūna
So indeed they, that Day, will be sharing in the punishment.
إِنَّا Indeed, We innā thus kadhālika We deal nafʿalu with the criminals bil-muj'rimīna
Indeed, that is how We deal with the criminals.
إِنَّهُمْ Indeed, they innahum were kānū when idhā it was said qīla to them lahum (There is) no lā god ilāha except illā Allah l-lahu were arrogant yastakbirūna
Indeed they, when it was said to them, "There is no deity but Allāh," were arrogant
وَيَقُولُونَ And they say wayaqūlūna Are we a-innā to leave latārikū our gods ālihatinā for a poet lishāʿirin mad majnūnin
And were saying, "Are we to leave our gods for a mad poet?"
بَلْ Nay bal he has brought jāa the truth bil-ḥaqi and confirmed waṣaddaqa the Messengers l-mur'salīna
Rather, he [i.e., the Prophet (ﷺ)] has come with the truth and confirmed the [previous] messengers.
إِنَّكُمْ Indeed, you innakum (will) surely taste ladhāiqū the punishment l-ʿadhābi painful l-alīmi
Indeed, you [disbelievers] will be tasters of the painful punishment,
وَمَا And not wamā you will be recompensed tuj'zawna except illā what mā you used to kuntum do taʿmalūna
And you will not be recompensed except for what you used to do -
إِلَّا Except illā (the) slaves ʿibāda (of) Allah l-lahi the chosen ones l-mukh'laṣīna
But not the chosen servants of Allāh.
أُو۟لَـٰٓئِكَ Those ulāika for them lahum (will be) a provision riz'qun determined maʿlūmun
Those will have a provision determined -
فَوَٰكِهُ ۖ Fruits fawākihu and they wahum (will) be honored muk'ramūna
Fruits;1 and they will be honored
فِى In fī Gardens jannāti (of) Delight l-naʿīmi
In gardens of pleasure
عَلَىٰ On ʿalā thrones sururin facing each other mutaqābilīna
On thrones facing one another.
يُطَافُ Will be circulated yuṭāfu among them ʿalayhim a cup bikasin from min a flowing spring maʿīnin
There will be circulated among them a cup [of wine] from a flowing spring,
بَيْضَآءَ White bayḍāa delicious ladhatin for the drinkers lilshāribīna
White and delicious to the drinkers;
لَا Not lā in it fīhā (is) bad effect ghawlun and not walā they hum from it ʿanhā will be intoxicated yunzafūna
No bad effect is there in it, nor from it will they be intoxicated.
وَعِندَهُمْ And with them waʿindahum (will be) companions of modest gaze qāṣirātu (will be) companions of modest gaze l-ṭarfi (having) beautiful eyes ʿīnun
And with them will be women limiting [their] glances,1 with large, [beautiful] eyes,
كَأَنَّهُنَّ As if they were ka-annahunna eggs bayḍun well protected maknūnun
As if they were [delicate] eggs, well-protected.
فَأَقْبَلَ And (will) approach fa-aqbala some of them baʿḍuhum to ʿalā others baʿḍin questioning one another yatasāalūna
And they will approach one another, inquiring of each other.
قَالَ Will say qāla a speaker qāilun among them min'hum Indeed, I innī had kāna for me lī a companion qarīnun
A speaker among them will say, "Indeed, I had a companion [on earth].
يَقُولُ Who (would) say yaqūlu Are you indeed a-innaka surely of lamina those who believe l-muṣadiqīna
Who would say, 'Are you indeed of those who believe
أَءِذَا Is (it) when a-idhā we have died mit'nā and become wakunnā dust turāban and bones waʿiẓāman will we a-innā surely be brought to Judgment lamadīnūna
That when we have died and become dust and bones, we will indeed be recompensed?'"
قَالَ He (will) say qāla Will hal you antum be looking muṭṭaliʿūna
He will say,1 "Would you [care to] look?"
فَٱطَّلَعَ Then he (will) look fa-iṭṭalaʿa and see him faraāhu in fī (the) midst sawāi (of) the Hellfire l-jaḥīmi
And he will look and see him1 in the midst of the Hellfire.
قَالَ He (will) say qāla By Allah tal-lahi verily in you almost kidtta ruined me latur'dīni
He will say, "By Allāh, you almost ruined me.
وَلَوْلَا And if not walawlā (for the) Grace niʿ'matu (of) my Lord rabbī certainly, I (would) have been lakuntu among mina those brought l-muḥ'ḍarīna
If not for the favor of my Lord, I would have been of those brought in [to Hell].
أَفَمَا Then are not afamā we naḥnu (to) die bimayyitīna
Then, are we not to die
إِلَّا Except illā our death mawtatanā the first l-ūlā and not wamā we naḥnu will be punished bimuʿadhabīna
Except for our first death, and we will not be punished?"
إِنَّ Indeed inna this hādhā surely lahuwa (is) the attainment l-fawzu great l-ʿaẓīmu
Indeed, this is the great attainment.
لِمِثْلِ For (the) like limith'li (of) this hādhā let work falyaʿmali the workers l-ʿāmilūna
For the like of this let the workers [on earth] work.
أَذَٰلِكَ Is that adhālika better khayrun (as) hospitality nuzulan or am (the) tree shajaratu (of) Zaqqum l-zaqūmi
Is that [i.e., Paradise] a better accommodation or the tree of zaqqūm?
إِنَّا Indeed, We innā [We] have made it jaʿalnāhā a trial fit'natan for the wrongdoers lilẓẓālimīna
Indeed, We have made it a torment for the wrongdoers.
إِنَّهَا Indeed, it innahā (is) a tree shajaratun that grows takhruju in fī (the) bottom aṣli (of) the Hellfire l-jaḥīmi
Indeed, it is a tree issuing from the bottom of the Hellfire,
طَلْعُهَا Its emerging fruit ṭalʿuhā (is) as if it ka-annahu (was) heads ruūsu (of) the devils l-shayāṭīni
Its emerging fruit as if it was heads of the devils.
فَإِنَّهُمْ And indeed, they fa-innahum (will) surely eat laākilūna from it min'hā and fill famāliūna with it min'hā (their) bellies l-buṭūna
And indeed, they will eat from it and fill with it their bellies.
ثُمَّ Then thumma indeed inna for them lahum in it ʿalayhā (is) a mixture lashawban of min boiling water ḥamīmin
Then indeed, they will have after it a mixture of scalding water.
ثُمَّ Then thumma indeed inna their return marjiʿahum (will) surely be to la-ilā the Hellfire l-jaḥīmi
Then indeed, their return will be to the Hellfire.
إِنَّهُمْ Indeed, they innahum found alfaw their fathers ābāahum astray ḍāllīna
Indeed they found their fathers astray.
فَهُمْ So they fahum on ʿalā their footsteps āthārihim they hastened yuh'raʿūna
So they hastened [to follow] in their footsteps.
وَلَقَدْ And verily walaqad went astray ḍalla before them qablahum most aktharu (of) the former (people) l-awalīna
And there had already strayed before them most of the former peoples,
وَلَقَدْ And verily walaqad We sent arsalnā among them fīhim warners mundhirīna
And We had already sent among them warners.
فَٱنظُرْ Then see fa-unẓur how kayfa was kāna (the) end ʿāqibatu (of) those who were warned l-mundharīna
Then look how was the end of those who were warned -
إِلَّا Except illā (the) slaves ʿibāda (of) Allah l-lahi the chosen ones l-mukh'laṣīna
But not the chosen servants of Allāh.
وَلَقَدْ And verily walaqad called Us nādānā Nuh nūḥun and Best falaniʿ'ma (are We as) Responders l-mujībūna
And Noah had certainly called Us, and [We are] the best of responders.
وَنَجَّيْنَـٰهُ And We saved him wanajjaynāhu and his family wa-ahlahu from mina the distress l-karbi the great l-ʿaẓīmi
And We saved him and his family from the great affliction.
وَجَعَلْنَا And We made wajaʿalnā his offspring dhurriyyatahu [they] humu the survivors l-bāqīna
And We made his descendants those remaining [on the earth]
وَتَرَكْنَا And We left wataraknā for him ʿalayhi among fī the later generations l-ākhirīna
And left for him [favorable mention] among later generations:
سَلَـٰمٌ Peace be salāmun upon ʿalā Nuh nūḥin among fī the worlds l-ʿālamīna
"Peace upon Noah among the worlds."
إِنَّا Indeed, We innā thus kadhālika [We] reward najzī the good-doers l-muḥ'sinīna
Indeed, We thus reward the doers of good.
إِنَّهُۥ Indeed, he innahu (was) of min Our slaves ʿibādinā believing l-mu'minīna
Indeed, he was of Our believing servants.
ثُمَّ Then thumma We drowned aghraqnā the others l-ākharīna
Then We drowned the others [i.e., disbelievers].
۞ وَإِنَّ And indeed wa-inna among min his kind shīʿatihi (was) surely Ibrahim la-ib'rāhīma
And indeed, among his kind was Abraham,
إِذْ When idh he came jāa (to) his Lord rabbahu with a heart biqalbin sound salīmin
When he came to his Lord with a sound heart
إِذْ When idh he said qāla to his father li-abīhi and his people waqawmihi What is it mādhā you worship taʿbudūna
[And] when he said to his father and his people, "What do you worship?
أَئِفْكًا Is it falsehood a-if'kan gods ālihatan other than dūna Allah l-lahi (that) you desire turīdūna
Is it falsehood [as] gods other than Allāh you desire?
فَمَا Then what famā (do) you think ẓannukum about (the) Lord birabbi (of) the worlds l-ʿālamīna
Then what is your thought about the Lord of the worlds?"
فَنَظَرَ Then he glanced fanaẓara a glance naẓratan at fī the stars l-nujūmi
And he cast a look at the stars.
فَقَالَ And he said faqāla Indeed, I am innī sick saqīmun
And said, "Indeed, I am [about to be] ill."
فَتَوَلَّوْا۟ So they turned away fatawallaw from him ʿanhu departing mud'birīna
So they turned away from him, departing.
فَرَاغَ Then he turned farāgha to ilā their gods ālihatihim and said faqāla Do not alā you eat takulūna
Then he turned to their gods and said, "Do you not eat?1
مَا What (is) mā for you lakum not lā you speak tanṭiqūna
What is [wrong] with you that you do not speak?".
فَرَاغَ Then he turned farāgha upon them ʿalayhim striking ḍarban with the right hand bil-yamīni
And he turned upon them a blow with [his] right hand.
فَأَقْبَلُوٓا۟ Then they advanced fa-aqbalū towards him ilayhi hastening yaziffūna
Then they [i.e., the people] came toward him, hastening.
قَالَ He said qāla Do you worship ataʿbudūna what mā you carve tanḥitūna
He said, "Do you worship that which you [yourselves] carve,
وَٱللَّهُ While Allah wal-lahu created you khalaqakum and what wamā you make taʿmalūna
While Allāh created you and that which you do?"
قَالُوا۟ They said qālū Build ib'nū for him lahu a structure bun'yānan and throw him fa-alqūhu into fī the blazing Fire l-jaḥīmi
They said, "Construct for him a structure [i.e., furnace] and throw him into the burning fire."
فَأَرَادُوا۟ And they intended fa-arādū for him bihi a plot kaydan but We made them fajaʿalnāhumu the lowest l-asfalīna
And they intended for him a plan [i.e., harm], but We made them the most debased.
وَقَالَ And he said waqāla Indeed, I am innī going dhāhibun to ilā my Lord rabbī He will guide me sayahdīni
And [then] he said, "Indeed, I will go to [where I am ordered by] my Lord; He will guide me.
رَبِّ My Lord rabbi grant hab me lī of mina the righteous l-ṣāliḥīna
My Lord, grant me [a child] from among the righteous."
فَبَشَّرْنَـٰهُ So We gave him the glad tidings fabasharnāhu of a boy bighulāmin forbearing ḥalīmin
So We gave him good tidings of a forbearing boy.
فَلَمَّا Then when falammā he reached balagha the (age of) working with him maʿahu the (age of) working with him l-saʿya he said qāla O my son yābunayya Indeed, I innī have seen arā in fī the dream l-manāmi that I am annī sacrificing you adhbaḥuka so look fa-unẓur what mādhā you see tarā He said qāla O my father yāabati Do if'ʿal what mā you are commanded tu'maru You will find me satajidunī if in Allah wills shāa Allah wills l-lahu of mina the patient ones l-ṣābirīna
And when he reached with him [the age of] exertion,1 he said, "O my son, indeed I have seen in a dream that I [must] sacrifice you, so see what you think." He said, "O my father, do as you are commanded. You will find me, if Allāh wills, of the steadfast."
فَلَمَّآ Then when falammā both of them had submitted aslamā and he put him down watallahu upon his forehead lil'jabīni
And when they had both submitted1 and he put him down upon his forehead,
وَنَـٰدَيْنَـٰهُ And We called out to him wanādaynāhu that an O Ibrahim yāib'rāhīmu
We called to him, "O Abraham,
قَدْ Verily qad you have fulfilled ṣaddaqta the vision l-ru'yā Indeed, We innā thus kadhālika [We] reward najzī the good-doers l-muḥ'sinīna
You have fulfilled the vision." Indeed, We thus reward the doers of good.
إِنَّ Indeed inna this hādhā (was) surely [it] lahuwa the trial l-balāu clear l-mubīnu
Indeed, this was the clear trial.
وَفَدَيْنَـٰهُ And We ransomed him wafadaynāhu with a sacrifice bidhib'ḥin great ʿaẓīmin
And We ransomed him with a great sacrifice,1
وَتَرَكْنَا And We left wataraknā for him ʿalayhi among fī the later generations l-ākhirīna
And We left for him [favorable mention] among later generations:
سَلَـٰمٌ Peace be salāmun on ʿalā Ibrahim ib'rāhīma
"Peace upon Abraham."
كَذَٰلِكَ Thus kadhālika We reward najzī the good-doers l-muḥ'sinīna
Indeed, We thus reward the doers of good.
إِنَّهُۥ Indeed, he (was) innahu of min Our slaves ʿibādinā believing l-mu'minīna
Indeed, he was of Our believing servants.
وَبَشَّرْنَـٰهُ And We gave him glad tidings wabasharnāhu of Isaac bi-is'ḥāqa a Prophet nabiyyan among mina the righteous l-ṣāliḥīna
And We gave him good tidings of Isaac, a prophet from among the righteous.1
وَبَـٰرَكْنَا And We blessed wabāraknā him ʿalayhi and [on] waʿalā Isaac is'ḥāqa And of wamin their offspring dhurriyyatihimā (are) good-doers muḥ'sinun and unjust waẓālimun to himself linafsihi clear mubīnun
And We blessed him and Isaac. But among their descendants is the doer of good and the clearly unjust to himself [i.e., sinner].
وَلَقَدْ And verily walaqad We conferred Favor manannā upon ʿalā Musa mūsā and Harun wahārūna
And We did certainly confer favor upon Moses and Aaron.
وَنَجَّيْنَـٰهُمَا And We saved both of them wanajjaynāhumā and their people waqawmahumā from mina the distress l-karbi the great l-ʿaẓīmi
And We saved them and their people from the great affliction,
وَنَصَرْنَـٰهُمْ And We helped them wanaṣarnāhum so they became fakānū so they became humu the victors l-ghālibīna
And We supported them so it was they who overcame.
وَءَاتَيْنَـٰهُمَا And We gave both of them waātaynāhumā the Book l-kitāba the clear l-mus'tabīna
And We gave them the explicit Scripture [i.e., the Torah],
وَهَدَيْنَـٰهُمَا And We guided both of them wahadaynāhumā (to) the Path l-ṣirāṭa the Straight l-mus'taqīma
And We guided them on the straight path.
وَتَرَكْنَا And We left wataraknā for both of them ʿalayhimā among fī the later generations l-ākhirīna
And We left for them [favorable mention] among later generations:
سَلَـٰمٌ Peace be salāmun upon ʿalā Musa mūsā and Harun wahārūna
"Peace upon Moses and Aaron."
إِنَّا Indeed, We innā thus kadhālika reward najzī the good-doers l-muḥ'sinīna
Indeed, We thus reward the doers of good.
إِنَّهُمَا Indeed, both of them innahumā (were) of min Our slaves ʿibādinā believing l-mu'minīna
Indeed, they were of Our believing servants.
وَإِنَّ And indeed wa-inna Elijah il'yāsa (was) surely of lamina the Messengers l-mur'salīna
And indeed, Elias was from among the messengers,
إِذْ When idh he said qāla to his people liqawmihi Will not alā you fear tattaqūna
When he said to his people, "Will you not fear Allāh?
أَتَدْعُونَ Do you call atadʿūna Baal baʿlan and you forsake watadharūna (the) Best aḥsana (of) Creators l-khāliqīna
Do you call upon Baʿl1 and leave the best of creators -
ٱللَّهَ Allah al-laha your Lord rabbakum and (the) Lord warabba (of) your forefathers ābāikumu (of) your forefathers l-awalīna
Allāh, your Lord and the Lord of your first forefathers?"
فَكَذَّبُوهُ But they denied him fakadhabūhu so indeed, they fa-innahum (will) surely be brought lamuḥ'ḍarūna
And they denied him, so indeed, they will be brought [for punishment],
إِلَّا Except illā (the) slaves ʿibāda (of) Allah l-lahi the chosen ones l-mukh'laṣīna
Except the chosen servants of Allāh.
وَتَرَكْنَا And We left wataraknā for him ʿalayhi among fī the later generations l-ākhirīna
And We left for him [favorable mention] among later generations:
سَلَـٰمٌ Peace be salāmun upon ʿalā Elijah il yāsīna
"Peace upon Elias."1
إِنَّا Indeed, We innā thus kadhālika reward najzī the good-doers l-muḥ'sinīna
Indeed, We thus reward the doers of good.
إِنَّهُۥ Indeed, he (was) innahu of min Our slaves ʿibādinā believing l-mu'minīna
Indeed, he was of Our believing servants.
وَإِنَّ And indeed wa-inna Lut lūṭan (was) of lamina the Messengers l-mur'salīna
And indeed, Lot was among the messengers.
إِذْ When idh We saved him najjaynāhu and his family wa-ahlahu all ajmaʿīna
[So mention] when We saved him and his family, all,
إِلَّا Except illā an old woman ʿajūzan (was) among fī those who remained behind l-ghābirīna
Except an old woman [i.e., his wife] among those who remained [with the evildoers].
ثُمَّ Then thumma We destroyed dammarnā the others l-ākharīna
Then We destroyed the others.
وَإِنَّكُمْ And indeed, you wa-innakum surely pass latamurrūna by them ʿalayhim (in the) morning muṣ'biḥīna
And indeed, you pass by them in the morning
وَبِٱلَّيْلِ ۗ And at night wabi-al-layli Then will not afalā you use reason taʿqilūna
And at night. Then will you not use reason?
وَإِنَّ And indeed wa-inna Yunus yūnusa (was) surely of lamina the Messengers l-mur'salīna
And indeed, Jonah was among the messengers.
إِذْ When idh he ran away abaqa to ilā the ship l-ful'ki laden l-mashḥūni
[Mention] when he ran away to the laden ship.
فَسَاهَمَ Then he drew lots fasāhama and was fakāna of mina the losers l-mud'ḥaḍīna
And he drew lots1 and was among the losers.
فَٱلْتَقَمَهُ Then swallowed him fal-taqamahu the fish l-ḥūtu while he wahuwa (was) blameworthy mulīmun
Then the fish swallowed him, while he was blameworthy.1
فَلَوْلَآ And if not falawlā that he annahu was kāna of mina those who glorify l-musabiḥīna
And had he not been of those who exalt Allāh,
لَلَبِثَ Certainly, he (would have) remained lalabitha in fī its belly baṭnihi until ilā the Day yawmi they are resurrected yub'ʿathūna
He would have remained inside its belly until the Day they are resurrected.1
۞ فَنَبَذْنَـٰهُ But We cast him fanabadhnāhu onto the open shore bil-ʿarāi while he wahuwa (was) ill saqīmun
But We threw him onto the open shore while he was ill.
وَأَنۢبَتْنَا And We caused to grow wa-anbatnā over him ʿalayhi a plant shajaratan of min gourd yaqṭīnin
And We caused to grow over him a gourd vine.1
وَأَرْسَلْنَـٰهُ And We sent him wa-arsalnāhu to ilā a hundred mi-ati thousand alfin or aw more yazīdūna
And We sent him1 to [his people of] a hundred thousand or more.
فَـَٔامَنُوا۟ And they believed faāmanū so We gave them enjoyment famattaʿnāhum for ilā a while ḥīnin
And they believed, so We gave them enjoyment [of life] for a time.
فَٱسْتَفْتِهِمْ Then ask them fa-is'taftihim Does your Lord alirabbika (have) daughters l-banātu while for them walahumu (are) sons l-banūna
So inquire of them, [O Muḥammad], "Does your Lord have daughters while they have sons?1
أَمْ Or am did We create khalaqnā the Angels l-malāikata females ināthan while they wahum (were) witnesses shāhidūna
Or did We create the angels as females while they were witnesses?"
أَلَآ No doubt alā indeed, they innahum of min their falsehood if'kihim [they] say layaqūlūna
Unquestionably, it is out of their [invented] falsehood that they say,
وَلَدَ Allah has begotten walada Allah has begotten l-lahu and indeed, they wa-innahum surely (are) liars lakādhibūna
"Allāh has begotten," and indeed, they are liars.
أَصْطَفَى Has He chosen aṣṭafā [the] daughters l-banāti over ʿalā sons l-banīna
Has He chosen daughters over sons?
مَا What is with you mā What is with you lakum How kayfa you judge taḥkumūna
What is [wrong] with you? How do you make judgement?
أَفَلَا Then will not afalā you pay heed tadhakkarūna
Then will you not be reminded?
أَمْ Or am (is) for you lakum an authority sul'ṭānun clear mubīnun
Or do you have a clear authority?1
فَأْتُوا۟ Then bring fatū your book bikitābikum if in you are kuntum truthful ṣādiqīna
Then produce your scripture, if you should be truthful.
وَجَعَلُوا۟ And they have made wajaʿalū between Him baynahu and between wabayna the jinn l-jinati a relationship nasaban but certainly walaqad know ʿalimati the jinn l-jinatu that they innahum (will) surely be brought lamuḥ'ḍarūna
And they have made [i.e., claimed] between Him and the jinn a lineage, but the jinn have already known that they [who made such claims] will be brought [to punishment].
سُبْحَـٰنَ Glory be sub'ḥāna (to) Allah l-lahi above what ʿammā they attribute yaṣifūna
Exalted is Allāh above what they describe,
إِلَّا Except illā (the) slaves ʿibāda (of) Allah l-lahi the chosen l-mukh'laṣīna
Except the chosen servants of Allāh [who do not share in that sin].
فَإِنَّكُمْ So indeed, you fa-innakum and what wamā you worship taʿbudūna
So indeed, you [disbelievers] and whatever you worship,
مَآ Not mā you antum from Him ʿalayhi can tempt away (anyone) bifātinīna
You cannot tempt [anyone] away from Him
إِلَّا Except illā who man he huwa (is) to burn ṣāli (in) the Hellfire l-jaḥīmi
Except he who is to [enter and] burn in the Hellfire.1
وَمَا And not wamā among us minnā except illā for him lahu (is) a position maqāmun known maʿlūmun
[The angels say],1 "There is not among us any except that he has a known position.2
وَإِنَّا And indeed, we wa-innā surely, [we] lanaḥnu stand in rows l-ṣāfūna
And indeed, we are those who line up [for prayer].
وَإِنَّا And indeed, we wa-innā surely, [we] lanaḥnu glorify (Allah) l-musabiḥūna
And indeed, we are those who exalt Allāh."
وَإِن And indeed wa-in they used to kānū say layaqūlūna
And indeed, they [i.e., the disbelievers] used to say,1
لَوْ If law that anna we had ʿindanā a reminder dhik'ran from mina the former (people) l-awalīna
"If we had a message from [those of] the former peoples,
لَكُنَّا Certainly, we (would) have been lakunnā slaves ʿibāda (of) Allah l-lahi the chosen l-mukh'laṣīna
We would have been the chosen servants of Allāh."
فَكَفَرُوا۟ But they disbelieved fakafarū in it bihi so soon fasawfa they will know yaʿlamūna
But they disbelieved in it,1 so they are going to know.
وَلَقَدْ And verily walaqad has preceded sabaqat Our Word kalimatunā for Our slaves liʿibādinā the Messengers l-mur'salīna
And Our word [i.e., decree] has already preceded for Our servants, the messengers,
إِنَّهُمْ Indeed they innahum surely they lahumu (would be) the victorious l-manṣūrūna
[That] indeed, they would be those given victory
وَإِنَّ And indeed wa-inna Our host jundanā surely, they lahumu (will be) those who overcome l-ghālibūna
And [that] indeed, Our soldiers [i.e., the believers] will be those who overcome.1
فَتَوَلَّ So turn away fatawalla from them ʿanhum until ḥattā a time ḥīnin
So, [O Muḥammad], leave them for a time.
وَأَبْصِرْهُمْ And see them wa-abṣir'hum so soon fasawfa they will see yub'ṣirūna
And see [what will befall] them, for they are going to see.
أَفَبِعَذَابِنَا Then is (it) for Our punishment afabiʿadhābinā they hasten yastaʿjilūna
Then for Our punishment are they impatient?
فَإِذَا But when fa-idhā it descends nazala in their territory bisāḥatihim then evil (will be) fasāa (the) morning ṣabāḥu (for) those who were warned l-mundharīna
But when it descends in their territory, then evil is the morning of those who were warned.
وَتَوَلَّ So turn away watawalla from them ʿanhum for ḥattā a time ḥīnin
And leave them for a time.
وَأَبْصِرْ And see wa-abṣir so soon fasawfa they will see yub'ṣirūna
And see, for they are going to see.
سُبْحَـٰنَ Glory sub'ḥāna (be to) your Lord rabbika (the) Lord rabbi (of) Honor l-ʿizati above what ʿammā they attribute yaṣifūna
Exalted is your Lord, the Lord of might, above what they describe.
وَسَلَـٰمٌ And peace be wasalāmun upon ʿalā the Messengers l-mur'salīna
And peace upon the messengers.
وَٱلْحَمْدُ And all praise wal-ḥamdu (be) to Allah lillahi (the) Lord rabbi (of) the worlds l-ʿālamīna
And praise to Allāh, Lord of the worlds.
