يَـٰٓأَيُّهَا O yāayyuhā mankind l-nāsu Fear ittaqū your Lord rabbakumu the One Who alladhī created you khalaqakum from min a soul nafsin single wāḥidatin and created wakhalaqa from it min'hā its mate zawjahā and dispersed wabatha from both of them min'humā men rijālan many kathīran and women wanisāan And fear wa-ittaqū Allah l-laha (through) Whom alladhī you ask tasāalūna [with it] bihi and the wombs wal-arḥāma Indeed inna Allah l-laha is kāna over you ʿalaykum Ever-Watchful raqīban
O mankind, fear your Lord, who created you from one soul and created from it its mate and dispersed from both of them many men and women. And fear Allāh, through whom1 you ask one another,2 and the wombs.3 Indeed Allāh is ever,4 over you, an Observer.5
وَءَاتُوا۟ And give waātū (to) the orphans l-yatāmā their wealth amwālahum and (do) not walā exchange tatabaddalū the bad l-khabītha with the good bil-ṭayibi and (do) not walā consume takulū their wealth amwālahum with ilā your wealth amwālikum Indeed, it innahu is kāna a sin ḥūban great kabīran
And give to the orphans their properties and do not substitute the defective [of your own] for the good [of theirs]. And do not consume their properties into your own. Indeed, that is ever a great sin.
وَإِنْ And if wa-in you fear khif'tum that not allā you will be able to do justice tuq'siṭū with fī the orphans l-yatāmā then marry fa-inkiḥū what mā seems suitable ṭāba to you lakum from mina the women l-nisāi two mathnā or three wathulātha or four warubāʿa But if fa-in you fear khif'tum that not allā you can do justice taʿdilū then (marry) one fawāḥidatan or aw what mā possesses malakat your right hand aymānukum That dhālika (is) more appropriate adnā that (may) not allā you oppress taʿūlū
And if you fear that you will not deal justly with the orphan girls, then marry those that please you of [other] women, two or three or four. But if you fear that you will not be just, then [marry only] one or those your right hands possess [i.e., slaves]. That is more suitable that you may not incline [to injustice].
وَءَاتُوا۟ And give waātū the women l-nisāa their dower ṣaduqātihinna graciously niḥ'latan But if fa-in they remit ṭib'na to you lakum of ʿan anything shayin of it min'hu (on their) own nafsan then eat it fakulūhu (in) satisfaction hanīan (and) ease marīan
And give the women [upon marriage] their [bridal] gifts1 graciously. But if they give up willingly to you anything of it, then take it in satisfaction and ease.2
وَلَا And (do) not walā give tu'tū the foolish l-sufahāa your wealth amwālakumu which allatī (was) made jaʿala (by) Allah l-lahu for you lakum a means of support qiyāman (but) provide (for) them wa-ur'zuqūhum with it fīhā and clothe them wa-ik'sūhum and speak waqūlū to them lahum words qawlan (of) kindness maʿrūfan
And do not give the weak-minded your property,1 which Allāh has made a means of sustenance for you, but provide for them with it and clothe them and speak to them words of appropriate kindness.
وَٱبْتَلُوا۟ And test wa-ib'talū the orphans l-yatāmā until ḥattā [when] idhā they reach[ed] balaghū (the age of) marriage l-nikāḥa then if fa-in you perceive ānastum in them min'hum sound judgement rush'dan then deliver fa-id'faʿū to them ilayhim their wealth amwālahum And (do) not walā eat it takulūhā extravagantly is'rāfan and hastily wabidāran (fearing) that an they will grow up yakbarū And whoever waman is kāna rich ghaniyyan then he should refrain falyastaʿfif and whoever waman is kāna poor faqīran then let him eat (of it) falyakul in a fair manner bil-maʿrūfi Then when fa-idhā you deliver dafaʿtum to them ilayhim their wealth amwālahum then take witnesses fa-ashhidū on them ʿalayhim And is sufficient wakafā Allah bil-lahi (as) a Reckoner ḥasīban
And test the orphans [in their abilities] until they reach marriageable age. Then if you perceive in them sound judgement, release their property to them. And do not consume it excessively and quickly, [anticipating] that they will grow up. And whoever, [when acting as guardian], is self-sufficient should refrain [from taking a fee]; and whoever is poor - let him take according to what is acceptable. Then when you release their property to them, bring witnesses upon them. And sufficient is Allāh as Accountant.
لِّلرِّجَالِ For the men lilrrijāli a portion naṣībun of what mimmā (is) left taraka (by) the parents l-wālidāni and the near relatives wal-aqrabūna and for the women walilnnisāi a portion naṣībun of what mimmā (is) left taraka (by) parents l-wālidāni and the near relatives wal-aqrabūna of what mimmā (is) little qalla of it min'hu or aw much kathura a portion naṣīban obligatory mafrūḍan
For men is a share of what the parents and close relatives leave, and for women is a share of what the parents and close relatives leave, be it little or much - an obligatory share.
وَإِذَا And when wa-idhā present ḥaḍara (at) the (time of) division l-qis'mata (of) ulū the relatives l-qur'bā and the orphans wal-yatāmā and the poor wal-masākīnu then provide them fa-ur'zuqūhum from it min'hu and speak waqūlū to them lahum words qawlan (of) kindness maʿrūfan
And when [other] relatives and orphans and the needy are present at the [time of] division, then provide for them [something] out of it [i.e., the estate] and speak to them words of appropriate kindness.
وَلْيَخْشَ And let fear walyakhsha those who alladhīna if law they left tarakū from min behind khalfihim offspring dhurriyyatan weak ḍiʿāfan (and) they would have feared khāfū about them ʿalayhim So let them fear falyattaqū Allah l-laha and let them speak walyaqūlū words qawlan appropriate sadīdan
And let those [executors and guardians] fear [injustice] as if they [themselves] had left weak offspring behind and feared for them. So let them fear Allāh and speak words of appropriate justice.
إِنَّ Indeed inna those who alladhīna consume yakulūna wealth amwāla (of) the orphans l-yatāmā wrongfully ẓul'man only innamā they consume yakulūna in fī their bellies buṭūnihim fire nāran and they will be burned wasayaṣlawna (in) a Blazing Fire saʿīran
Indeed, those who devour the property of orphans unjustly are only consuming into their bellies fire. And they will be burned in a Blaze [i.e., Hellfire].
يُوصِيكُمُ Instructs you yūṣīkumu Allah l-lahu concerning fī your children awlādikum for the male lildhakari like mith'lu (the) portion ḥaẓẓi (of) two females l-unthayayni But if fa-in there are kunna (only) women nisāan more (than) fawqa two ith'natayni then for them falahunna two thirds thuluthā (of) what mā he left taraka And if wa-in (there) is kānat (only) one wāḥidatan then for her falahā (is) half l-niṣ'fu And for his parents wali-abawayhi for each likulli one wāḥidin of them min'humā a sixth l-sudusu of what mimmā (is) left taraka if in is kāna for him lahu a child waladun But if fa-in not lam is yakun for him lahu any child waladun and inherit[ed] him wawarithahu his parents abawāhu then for his mother fali-ummihi (is) one third l-thuluthu And if fa-in are kāna for him lahu brothers and sisters ikh'watun then for his mother fali-ummihi (is) the sixth l-sudusu from min after baʿdi any will waṣiyyatin he has made yūṣī [of which] bihā or aw any debt daynin Your parents ābāukum and your children wa-abnāukum not lā you know tadrūna which of them ayyuhum (is) nearer aqrabu to you lakum (in) benefit nafʿan An obligation farīḍatan from mina Allah l-lahi Indeed inna Allah l-laha is kāna All-Knowing ʿalīman All-Wise ḥakīman
Allāh instructs you concerning your children [i.e., their portions of inheritance]: for the male, what is equal to the share of two females. But if there are [only] daughters, two or more, for them is two thirds of one's estate.1 And if there is only one, for her is half. And for one's parents, to each one of them is a sixth of his estate if he left children. But if he had no children and the parents [alone] inherit from him, then for his mother is one third. And if he had brothers [and/or sisters], for his mother is a sixth,2 after any bequest he [may have] made or debt.3 Your parents or your children - you know not which of them are nearest to you in benefit. [These shares are] an obligation [imposed] by Allāh. Indeed, Allāh is ever Knowing and Wise.
۞ وَلَكُمْ And for you walakum (is) half niṣ'fu (of) what mā (is) left taraka by your wives azwājukum if in not lam is yakun for them lahunna a child waladun But if fa-in is kāna for them lahunna a child waladun then for you falakumu (is) the fourth l-rubuʿu of what mimmā they left tarakna from min after baʿdi any will waṣiyyatin they have made yūṣīna [for which] bihā or aw any debt daynin And for them walahunna (is) the fourth l-rubuʿu of what mimmā you left taraktum if in not lam is yakun for you lakum a child waladun But if fa-in is kāna for you lakum a child waladun then for them falahunna (is) the eighth l-thumunu of what mimmā you left taraktum from min after baʿdi any will waṣiyyatin you have made tūṣūna [for which] bihā or aw any debt daynin And if wa-in [is] kāna a man rajulun (whose wealth) is to be inherited yūrathu (has) no parent or child kalālatan or awi a women im'ra-atun and for him walahu (is) a brother akhun or aw a sister ukh'tun then for each falikulli one wāḥidin of (the) two min'humā (is) the sixth l-sudusu But if fa-in they are kānū more akthara than min that dhālika then they fahum (are) partners shurakāu in fī the third l-thuluthi from min after baʿdi any will waṣiyyatin was made yūṣā [for which] bihā or aw any debt daynin without ghayra (being) harmful muḍārrin An ordinance waṣiyyatan from mina Allah l-lahi And Allah wal-lahu (is) All-Knowing ʿalīmun All-Forbearing ḥalīmun
And for you is half of what your wives leave if they have no child. But if they have a child, for you is one fourth of what they leave, after any bequest they [may have] made or debt. And for them [i.e., the wives] is one fourth if you leave no child. But if you leave a child, then for them is an eighth of what you leave, after any bequest you [may have] made or debt. And if a man or woman leaves neither ascendants nor descendants but has a brother or a sister, then for each one of them is a sixth. But if they are more than two, they share a third,1 after any bequest which was made or debt, as long as there is no detriment [caused].2 [This is] an ordinance from Allāh, and Allāh is Knowing and Forbearing.
تِلْكَ These til'ka (are the) limits ḥudūdu (of) Allah l-lahi and whoever waman obeys yuṭiʿi Allah l-laha and His Messenger warasūlahu He will admit him yud'khil'hu (to) Gardens jannātin flows tajrī from min underneath them taḥtihā the rivers l-anhāru (will) abide forever khālidīna in it fīhā And that wadhālika (is) the success l-fawzu [the] great l-ʿaẓīmu
These are the limits [set by] Allāh, and whoever obeys Allāh and His Messenger will be admitted by Him to gardens [in Paradise] under which rivers flow, abiding eternally therein; and that is the great attainment.
وَمَن And whoever waman disobeys yaʿṣi Allah l-laha and His Messenger warasūlahu and transgresses wayataʿadda His limits ḥudūdahu He will admit him yud'khil'hu (to) Fire nāran (will) abide forever khālidan in it fīhā And for him walahu (is) a punishment ʿadhābun humiliating muhīnun
And whoever disobeys Allāh and His Messenger and transgresses His limits - He will put him into the Fire to abide eternally therein, and he will have a humiliating punishment.
وَٱلَّـٰتِى And those who wa-allātī commit yatīna [the] immorality l-fāḥishata from min your women nisāikum then call to witness fa-is'tashhidū against them ʿalayhinna four arbaʿatan among you minkum And if fa-in they testify shahidū then confine them fa-amsikūhunna in fī their houses l-buyūti until ḥattā comes to them yatawaffāhunna [the] death l-mawtu or aw makes yajʿala Allah l-lahu for them lahunna a way sabīlan
Those who commit immorality [i.e., unlawful sexual intercourse] of your women - bring against them four [witnesses] from among you. And if they testify,1 confine them [i.e., the guilty women] to houses until death takes them or Allāh ordains for them [another] way.2
وَٱلَّذَانِ And the two who wa-alladhāni commit it yatiyānihā among you minkum then punish both of them faādhūhumā But if fa-in they repent tābā and correct themselves wa-aṣlaḥā then turn away fa-aʿriḍū from both of them ʿanhumā Indeed inna Allah l-laha is kāna Oft-Forgiving tawwāban Most-Merciful raḥīman
And the two1 who commit it [i.e., unlawful sexual intercourse] among you - punish [i.e., dishonor] them both. But if they repent and correct themselves, leave them alone. Indeed, Allāh is ever Accepting of Repentance and Merciful.
إِنَّمَا Only innamā the acceptance of repentance l-tawbatu by ʿalā Allah l-lahi (is) for those who lilladhīna do yaʿmalūna the evil l-sūa in ignorance bijahālatin then thumma they repent yatūbūna from min soon after qarībin Then those fa-ulāika will have forgiveness yatūbu (from) Allah l-lahu upon them ʿalayhim and is wakāna Allah l-lahu All-Knowing ʿalīman All-Wise ḥakīman
The repentance accepted by Allāh is only for those who do wrong in ignorance [or carelessness] and then repent soon [after].1 It is those to whom Allāh will turn in forgiveness, and Allāh is ever Knowing and Wise.
وَلَيْسَتِ And not walaysati (is) the acceptance of repentance l-tawbatu for those who lilladhīna do yaʿmalūna the evil deeds l-sayiāti until ḥattā when idhā approaches ḥaḍara one of them aḥadahumu [the] death l-mawtu he says qāla Indeed I innī repent tub'tu now l-āna and not walā those who alladhīna die yamūtūna while they wahum (are) disbelievers kuffārun Those ulāika We have prepared aʿtadnā for them lahum a punishment ʿadhāban painful alīman
But repentance is not [accepted] of those who [continue to] do evil deeds up until, when death comes to one of them, he says, "Indeed, I have repented now," or of those who die while they are disbelievers. For them We have prepared a painful punishment.
يَـٰٓأَيُّهَا O you yāayyuhā who alladhīna believe[d] āmanū Not lā (is) lawful yaḥillu for you lakum that an you inherit tarithū the women l-nisāa (by) force karhan And not walā you constraint them taʿḍulūhunna so that you may take litadhhabū a part bibaʿḍi (of) what mā you have given them ātaytumūhunna except illā that an they commit yatīna immorality bifāḥishatin open mubayyinatin And live with them waʿāshirūhunna in kindness bil-maʿrūfi But if fa-in you dislike them karih'tumūhunna then perhaps faʿasā that an you dislike takrahū a thing shayan and has placed wayajʿala Allah l-lahu in it fīhi good khayran much kathīran
O you who have believed, it is not lawful for you to inherit women by compulsion.1 And do not make difficulties for them in order to take [back] part of what you gave them2 unless they commit a clear immorality [i.e., adultery]. And live with them in kindness. For if you dislike them - perhaps you dislike a thing and Allāh makes therein much good.
وَإِنْ And if wa-in you intend aradttumu replacing is'tib'dāla a wife zawjin (in) place makāna (of) a wife zawjin and you have given waātaytum one of them iḥ'dāhunna heap (of gold) qinṭāran then (do) not falā take away takhudhū from it min'hu anything shayan Would you take it atakhudhūnahu (by) slander buh'tānan and a sin wa-ith'man open mubīnan
But if you want to replace one wife with another and you have given one of them a great amount [in gifts], do not take [back] from it anything. Would you take it in injustice and manifest sin?
وَكَيْفَ And how wakayfa could you take it takhudhūnahu when surely waqad has gone afḍā one of you baʿḍukum to ilā another baʿḍin and they have taken wa-akhadhna from you minkum covenant mīthāqan strong ghalīẓan
And how could you take it while you have gone in unto each other and they have taken from you a solemn covenant?
وَلَا And (do) not walā marry tankiḥū whom mā married nakaḥa your fathers ābāukum of mina the women l-nisāi except illā what mā has qad passed before salafa indeed it innahu was kāna an immorality fāḥishatan and hateful wamaqtan and (an) evil wasāa way sabīlan
And do not marry those [women] whom your fathers married, except what has already occurred.1 Indeed, it was an immorality and hateful [to Allāh] and was evil as a way.
حُرِّمَتْ Forbidden ḥurrimat to you ʿalaykum (are) your mothers ummahātukum and your daughters wabanātukum and your sisters wa-akhawātukum and your father's sisters waʿammātukum and your mother's sisters wakhālātukum and daughters wabanātu (of) brothers l-akhi and daughters wabanātu (of) sisters l-ukh'ti and (the) mothers wa-ummahātukumu who allātī nursed you arḍaʿnakum and your sisters wa-akhawātukum from mina the nursing l-raḍāʿati and mothers wa-ummahātu (of) your wives nisāikum and your step daughters warabāibukumu who allātī (are) in fī your guardianship ḥujūrikum of min your women nisāikumu whom allātī you had relations dakhaltum with them bihinna but if fa-in not lam you had takūnū relations dakhaltum with them bihinna then (there is) no falā sin junāḥa on you ʿalaykum And wives waḥalāilu (of) your sons abnāikumu those who alladhīna (are) from min your loins aṣlābikum and that wa-an you gather together tajmaʿū [between] bayna two sisters l-ukh'tayni except illā what mā has qad passed before salafa Indeed inna Allah l-laha is kāna Oft-Forgiving ghafūran Most-Merciful raḥīman
Prohibited to you [for marriage] are your mothers, your daughters, your sisters, your father's sisters, your mother's sisters, your brother's daughters, your sister's daughters, your [milk] mothers who nursed you, your sisters through nursing, your wives' mothers, and your step-daughters under your guardianship [born] of your wives unto whom you have gone in. But if you have not gone in unto them, there is no sin upon you. And [also prohibited are] the wives of your sons who are from your [own] loins, and that you take [in marriage] two sisters simultaneously, except for what has already occurred.1 Indeed, Allāh is ever Forgiving and Merciful.
۞ وَٱلْمُحْصَنَـٰتُ And (prohibited are) the ones who are married wal-muḥ'ṣanātu of mina the women l-nisāi except illā whom mā you possess malakat rightfully aymānukum Decree kitāba (of) Allah l-lahi upon you ʿalaykum And are lawful wa-uḥilla to you lakum what mā (is) beyond warāa that dhālikum that an you seek tabtaghū with your wealth bi-amwālikum desiring to be chaste muḥ'ṣinīna not ghayra (to be) lustful musāfiḥīna So what famā you benefit[ed] is'tamtaʿtum of it bihi from them min'hunna so you give them faātūhunna their bridal due ujūrahunna (as) an obligation farīḍatan And (there is) no walā sin junāḥa on you ʿalaykum concerning what fīmā you mutually agree tarāḍaytum of it bihi from min beyond baʿdi the obligation l-farīḍati Indeed inna Allah l-laha is kāna All-Knowing ʿalīman All-Wise ḥakīman
And [also prohibited to you are all] married women except those your right hands possess.1 [This is] the decree of Allāh upon you. And lawful to you are [all others] beyond these, [provided] that you seek them [in marriage] with [gifts from] your property, desiring chastity, not unlawful sexual intercourse. So for whatever you enjoy [of marriage] from them, give them their due compensation2 as an obligation. And there is no blame upon you for what you mutually agree to beyond the obligation. Indeed, Allāh is ever Knowing and Wise.
وَمَن And whoever waman (is) not lam able to yastaṭiʿ among you minkum afford ṭawlan to an marry yankiḥa the free chaste l-muḥ'ṣanāti [the] believing women l-mu'mināti then (marry) from famin what mā possess[ed] malakat your right hands aymānukum of min your slave girls fatayātikumu (of) the believers l-mu'mināti And Allah wal-lahu knows best aʿlamu about your faith biīmānikum You baʿḍukum (are) from min (one) another baʿḍin So marry them fa-inkiḥūhunna with (the) permission bi-idh'ni (of) their family ahlihinna and give them waātūhunna their bridal due ujūrahunna in a fair manner bil-maʿrūfi (They should be) chaste muḥ'ṣanātin not ghayra those who commit immorality musāfiḥātin and not walā those who take muttakhidhāti secret lovers akhdānin Then when fa-idhā they are married uḥ'ṣinna and if fa-in they commit atayna adultery bifāḥishatin then for them faʿalayhinna (is) half niṣ'fu (of) what mā (is) on ʿalā the free chaste women l-muḥ'ṣanāti of mina the punishment l-ʿadhābi That dhālika (is) for whoever liman fears khashiya committing sin l-ʿanata among you minkum and that wa-an you be patient taṣbirū (is) better khayrun for you lakum And Allah wal-lahu (is) Oft-Forgiving ghafūrun Most Merciful raḥīmun
And whoever among you cannot [find] the means to marry free, believing women, then [he may marry] from those whom your right hands possess of believing slave girls. And Allāh is most knowing about your faith. You [believers] are of one another. So marry them with the permission of their people and give them their due compensation [i.e., mahr] according to what is acceptable. [They should be] chaste, neither [of] those who commit unlawful intercourse randomly nor those who take [secret] lovers. But once they are sheltered in marriage, if they should commit adultery, then for them is half the punishment for free [unmarried] women. This [allowance] is for him among you who fears affliction [i.e., sin], but to be patient is better for you. And Allāh is Forgiving and Merciful.
يُرِيدُ Wishes yurīdu Allah l-lahu to make clear liyubayyina to you lakum and to guide you wayahdiyakum (to) ways sunana (of) those alladhīna from min before you qablikum and (to) accept repentance wayatūba from you ʿalaykum And Allah wal-lahu (is) All-Knowing ʿalīmun All-Wise ḥakīmun
Allāh wants to make clear to you [the lawful from the unlawful] and guide you to the [good] practices of those before you and to accept your repentance. And Allāh is Knowing and Wise.
وَٱللَّهُ And Allah wal-lahu wishes yurīdu to an accept repentance yatūba from you ʿalaykum but wish wayurīdu those who alladhīna follow yattabiʿūna the passions l-shahawāti that an you deviate tamīlū (into) a deviation maylan great ʿaẓīman
Allāh wants to accept your repentance, but those who follow [their] passions want you to digress [into] a great deviation.
يُرِيدُ Wishes yurīdu Allah l-lahu to an lighten yukhaffifa for you ʿankum and was created wakhuliqa the mankind l-insānu weak ḍaʿīfan
And Allāh wants to lighten for you [your difficulties]; and mankind was created weak.
يَـٰٓأَيُّهَا O you yāayyuhā who alladhīna believe[d] āmanū (Do) not lā eat takulū your wealth amwālakum between yourselves baynakum unjustly bil-bāṭili But illā that an (there) be takūna business tijāratan on ʿan mutual consent tarāḍin among you minkum And (do) not walā kill taqtulū yourselves anfusakum Indeed inna Allah l-laha is kāna to you bikum Most Merciful raḥīman
O you who have believed, do not consume one another's wealth unjustly1 but only [in lawful] business by mutual consent. And do not kill yourselves [or one another]. Indeed, Allāh is to you ever Merciful.
وَمَن And whoever waman does yafʿal that dhālika (in) aggression ʿud'wānan and injustice waẓul'man then soon fasawfa We (will) cast him nuṣ'līhi (into) a Fire nāran And is wakāna that dhālika for ʿalā Allah l-lahi easy yasīran
And whoever does that in aggression and injustice - then We will drive him into a Fire. And that, for Allāh, is [always] easy.
إِن If in you avoid tajtanibū great (sins) kabāira (of) what mā you are forbidden tun'hawna from [it] ʿanhu We will remove nukaffir from you ʿankum your evil deeds sayyiātikum and We will admit you wanud'khil'kum (to) an entrance mud'khalan noble karīman
If you avoid the major sins which you are forbidden, We will remove from you your lesser sins and admit you to a noble entrance [into Paradise].
وَلَا And (do) not walā covet tatamannaw what mā (has) bestowed faḍḍala Allah l-lahu [with it] bihi some of you baʿḍakum over ʿalā others baʿḍin For men lilrrijāli (is) a share naṣībun of what mimmā they earned ik'tasabū and for women walilnnisāi (is) a share naṣībun of what mimmā they earned ik'tasabna And ask wasalū Allah l-laha of min His bounty faḍlihi Indeed inna Allah l-laha is kāna of every bikulli thing shayin All-Knower ʿalīman
And do not wish for that by which Allāh has made some of you exceed others. For men is a share of what they have earned, and for women is a share of1 what they have earned. And ask Allāh of His bounty. Indeed Allāh is ever, of all things, Knowing.
وَلِكُلٍّۢ And for all walikullin We (have) made jaʿalnā heirs mawāliya of what mimmā (is) left taraka (by) the parents l-wālidāni and the relatives wal-aqrabūna And those whom wa-alladhīna pledged ʿaqadat your right hands aymānukum then give them faātūhum their share naṣībahum Indeed inna Allah l-laha is kāna over ʿalā every kulli thing shayin a Witness shahīdan
And for all, We have made heirs to what is left by parents and relatives. And to those whom your oaths have bound [to you] - give them their share.1 Indeed Allāh is ever, over all things, a Witness.
ٱلرِّجَالُ [The] men al-rijālu (are) protectors qawwāmūna of ʿalā the women l-nisāi because bimā (has) bestowed faḍḍala Allah l-lahu some of them baʿḍahum over ʿalā others baʿḍin and because wabimā they spend anfaqū from min their wealth amwālihim So the righteous women fal-ṣāliḥātu (are) obedient qānitātun guarding ḥāfiẓātun in the unseen lil'ghaybi that which bimā (orders) them to guard ḥafiẓa (by) Allah l-lahu And those (from) whom wa-allātī you fear takhāfūna their ill-conduct nushūzahunna then advise them faʿiẓūhunna and forsake them wa-uh'jurūhunna in fī the bed l-maḍājiʿi and [finally] strike them wa-iḍ'ribūhunna Then if fa-in they obey you aṭaʿnakum then (do) not falā seek tabghū against them ʿalayhinna a way sabīlan Indeed inna Allah l-laha is kāna Most High ʿaliyyan Most Great kabīran
Men are in charge of women1 by [right of] what Allāh has given one over the other and what they spend [for maintenance] from their wealth. So righteous women are devoutly obedient, guarding in [the husband's] absence what Allāh would have them guard.2 But those [wives] from whom you fear arrogance3 - [first] advise them; [then if they persist], forsake them in bed; and [finally], strike them [lightly].4 But if they obey you [once more], seek no means against them. Indeed, Allāh is ever Exalted and Grand.
وَإِنْ And if wa-in you fear khif'tum a dissension shiqāqa between (the) two of them baynihimā then send fa-ib'ʿathū an arbitrator ḥakaman from min his family ahlihi and an arbitrator waḥakaman from min her family ahlihā If in they both wish yurīdā reconciliation iṣ'lāḥan will cause reconciliation yuwaffiqi Allah l-lahu between both of them baynahumā Indeed inna Allah l-laha is kāna All-Knower ʿalīman All-Aware khabīran
And if you fear dissension between the two, send an arbitrator from his people and an arbitrator from her people. If they both desire reconciliation, Allāh will cause it between them. Indeed, Allāh is ever Knowing and Aware.
۞ وَٱعْبُدُوا۟ And worship wa-uʿ'budū Allah l-laha And (do) not walā associate tush'rikū with Him bihi anything shayan and to the parents wabil-wālidayni (do) good iḥ'sānan and with wabidhī the relatives l-qur'bā and the orphans wal-yatāmā and the needy wal-masākīni and the neighbor wal-jāri (who is) dhī near l-qur'bā and the neighbor wal-jāri (who is) farther away l-junubi and the companion wal-ṣāḥibi by your side bil-janbi and the wa-ib'ni traveler l-sabīli and what wamā possess[ed] malakat your right hands aymānukum Indeed inna Allah l-laha (does) not lā love yuḥibbu (the one) who man is kāna [a] proud mukh'tālan (and) [a] boastful fakhūran
Worship Allāh and associate nothing with Him, and to parents do good, and to relatives, orphans, the needy, the near neighbor, the neighbor farther away, the companion at your side,1 the traveler, and those whom your right hands possess. Indeed, Allāh does not like those who are self-deluding and boastful,
ٱلَّذِينَ Those who alladhīna are stingy yabkhalūna and order wayamurūna the people l-nāsa [of] stinginess bil-bukh'li and hide wayaktumūna what mā (has) given them ātāhumu Allah l-lahu of min His Bounty faḍlihi and We (have) prepared wa-aʿtadnā for the disbelievers lil'kāfirīna a punishment ʿadhāban humiliating muhīnan
Who are stingy and enjoin upon [other] people stinginess and conceal what Allāh has given them of His bounty - and We have prepared for the disbelievers a humiliating punishment -
وَٱلَّذِينَ And those who wa-alladhīna spend yunfiqūna their wealth amwālahum to be seen riāa (by) the people l-nāsi and not walā they believe yu'minūna in Allah bil-lahi and not walā in the Day bil-yawmi the Last l-ākhiri and whoever waman has yakuni the Shaitaan l-shayṭānu for him lahu (as) companion qarīnan then evil fasāa (is he as) a companion qarīnan
And [also] those who spend of their wealth to be seen by the people and believe not in Allāh nor in the Last Day. And he to whom Satan is a companion - then evil is he as a companion.
وَمَاذَا And what wamādhā (is) against them ʿalayhim if law they believed āmanū in Allah bil-lahi and the Day wal-yawmi the Last l-ākhiri and spent wa-anfaqū from what mimmā (has) provided them razaqahumu Allah l-lahu And is wakāna Allah l-lahu about them bihim All-Knower ʿalīman
And what [harm would come] upon them if they believed in Allāh and the Last Day and spent out of what Allāh provided for them? And Allāh is ever, about them, Knowing.
إِنَّ Indeed inna Allah l-laha (does) not lā wrong yaẓlimu (as much as) weight mith'qāla (of) an atom dharratin And if wa-in there is taku a good ḥasanatan He doubles it yuḍāʿif'hā and gives wayu'ti from min near Him ladun'hu a reward ajran great ʿaẓīman
Indeed, Allāh does not do injustice, [even] as much as an atom's weight; while if there is a good deed, He multiplies it and gives from Himself a great reward.
فَكَيْفَ So how (will it be) fakayfa when idhā We bring ji'nā from min every kulli nation ummatin a witness bishahīdin and We bring waji'nā you bika against ʿalā these (people) hāulāi (as) a witness shahīdan
So how [will it be] when We bring from every nation a witness and We bring you, [O Muḥammad], against these [people] as a witness?
يَوْمَئِذٍۢ (On) that Day yawma-idhin will wish yawaddu those who alladhīna disbelieved kafarū and disobeyed waʿaṣawū the Messenger l-rasūla if law was leveled tusawwā with them bihimu the earth l-arḍu and not walā they will (be able to) hide yaktumūna (from) Allah l-laha (any) statement ḥadīthan
That Day, those who disbelieved and disobeyed the Messenger will wish they could be covered by the earth. And they will not conceal from Allāh a [single] statement.
يَـٰٓأَيُّهَا O you yāayyuhā who alladhīna believe[d] āmanū (Do) not lā go near taqrabū the prayer l-ṣalata while you wa-antum (are) intoxicated sukārā until ḥattā you know taʿlamū what mā you are saying taqūlūna and not walā (when you are) impure junuban except illā (when) passing ʿābirī (through) a way sabīlin until ḥattā you have bathed taghtasilū And if wa-in you are kuntum ill marḍā or aw on ʿalā a journey safarin or aw came jāa one aḥadun of you minkum from mina the toilet l-ghāiṭi or aw you have touched lāmastumu the women l-nisāa and not falam you find tajidū water māan then do tayammum fatayammamū (with) earth ṣaʿīdan clean ṭayyiban and wipe (with it) fa-im'saḥū your faces biwujūhikum and your hands wa-aydīkum Indeed inna Allah l-laha is kāna Oft-Pardoning ʿafuwwan Oft-Forgiving ghafūran
O you who have believed, do not approach prayer while you are intoxicated until you know what you are saying1 or in a state of janābah,2 except those passing through [a place of prayer], until you have washed [your whole body]. And if you are ill or on a journey or one of you comes from the place of relieving himself or you have contacted women [i.e., had sexual intercourse] and find no water, then seek clean earth and wipe over your faces and your hands [with it]. Indeed, Allāh is ever Pardoning3 and Forgiving.
أَلَمْ Did not alam you see tara [towards] ilā those who alladhīna were given ūtū a portion naṣīban of mina the Book l-kitābi purchasing yashtarūna [the] error l-ḍalālata and wishing wayurīdūna that an you stray taḍillū (from) the way l-sabīla
Have you not seen those who were given a portion of the Scripture, purchasing error [in exchange for it] and wishing you would lose the way?
وَٱللَّهُ And Allah wal-lahu knows better aʿlamu about your enemies bi-aʿdāikum and (is) sufficient wakafā Allah bil-lahi (as) a Protector waliyyan and sufficient wakafā (is) Allah bil-lahi (as) a Helper naṣīran
And Allāh is most knowing of your enemies; and sufficient is Allāh as an ally, and sufficient is Allāh as a helper.
مِّنَ Of mina those who alladhīna are Jews hādū they distort yuḥarrifūna the words l-kalima from ʿan their places mawāḍiʿihi and they say wayaqūlūna We hear[d] samiʿ'nā and we disobey[ed] waʿaṣaynā and "Hear wa-is'maʿ not ghayra to be heard mus'maʿin and "Raina warāʿinā twisting layyan [with] their tongues bi-alsinatihim and defaming waṭaʿnan [in] fī the religion l-dīni And if walaw [that] they annahum (had) said qālū We hear[d] samiʿ'nā and we obey[ed] wa-aṭaʿnā and "Hear wa-is'maʿ and look (at) us wa-unẓur'nā surely it (would) have been lakāna better khayran for them lahum and more suitable wa-aqwama [And] but walākin cursed them laʿanahumu Allah l-lahu for their disbelief bikuf'rihim so not falā they believe yu'minūna except illā a few qalīlan
Among the Jews are those who distort words from their [proper] places [i.e., usages] and say, "We hear and disobey" and "Hear but be not heard" and "Rāʿinā,"1 twisting their tongues and defaming the religion. And if they had said [instead], "We hear and obey" and "Wait for us [to understand]," it would have been better for them and more suitable. But Allāh has cursed them for their disbelief, so they believe not, except for a few.2
يَـٰٓأَيُّهَا O you yāayyuhā who alladhīna (have) been given ūtū the Book l-kitāba believe āminū in what bimā We (have) revealed nazzalnā confirming muṣaddiqan what is limā with you maʿakum from min before qabli [that] an We efface naṭmisa faces wujūhan and turn them fanaruddahā on ʿalā their backs adbārihā or aw We curse them nalʿanahum as kamā We cursed laʿannā companions aṣḥāba (of) the Sabbath l-sabti And is wakāna (the) command amru (of) Allah l-lahi (always) executed mafʿūlan
O you who were given the Scripture, believe in what We have sent down [to Prophet Muḥammad (ﷺ)], confirming that which is with you, before We obliterate faces and turn them toward their backs or curse them as We cursed the sabbath-breakers.1 And ever is the matter [i.e., decree] of Allāh accomplished.
إِنَّ Indeed inna Allah l-laha (does) not lā forgive yaghfiru that an partners be associated yush'raka with Him bihi but He forgives wayaghfiru from mā other than dūna that dhālika for whom liman He wills yashāu And whoever waman associates partners yush'rik with Allah bil-lahi then surely faqadi he has fabricated if'tarā a sin ith'man tremendous ʿaẓīman
Indeed, Allāh does not forgive association with Him, but He forgives what is less than that for whom He wills. And he who associates others with Allāh has certainly fabricated a tremendous sin.
أَلَمْ Do not alam you see tara [towards] ilā those who alladhīna claim purity yuzakkūna (for) themselves anfusahum Nay bali (it is) Allah l-lahu He purifies yuzakkī whom man He wills yashāu and not walā they will be wronged yuẓ'lamūna (even as much as) a hair on a date-seed fatīlan
Have you not seen those who claim themselves to be pure? Rather, Allāh purifies whom He wills, and injustice is not done to them, [even] as much as a thread [inside a date seed].
ٱنظُرْ See unẓur how kayfa they invent yaftarūna about ʿalā Allah l-lahi [the] lie l-kadhiba and sufficient wakafā is it bihi (as) a sin ith'man manifest mubīnan
Look how they invent about Allāh untruth, and sufficient is that as a manifest sin.
أَلَمْ Do not alam you see tara [towards] ilā those who alladhīna were given ūtū a portion naṣīban of mina the Book l-kitābi They believe yu'minūna in the superstition bil-jib'ti and the false deities wal-ṭāghūti and they say wayaqūlūna for those who lilladhīna disbelieve[d] kafarū These hāulāi (are) better guided ahdā than mina those who alladhīna believe[d] āmanū (as to the) way sabīlan
Have you not seen those who were given a portion of the Scripture, who believe in jibt [superstition] and ṭāghūt [false objects of worship] and say about the disbelievers, "These are better guided than the believers as to the way"?
أُو۟لَـٰٓئِكَ Those ulāika (are) the ones alladhīna (who have been) cursed laʿanahumu (by) Allah l-lahu and whoever waman (is) cursed yalʿani (by) Allah l-lahu then never falan will you find tajida for him lahu (any) helper naṣīran
Those are the ones whom Allāh has cursed; and he whom Allāh curses - never will you find for him a helper.
أَمْ Or am for them lahum (is) a share naṣībun of mina the Kingdom l-mul'ki Then fa-idhan not would lā they give yu'tūna the people l-nāsa (even as much as the) speck on a date seed naqīran
Or have they a share of dominion? Then [if that were so], they would not give the people [even as much as] the speck on a date seed.
أَمْ Or am are they jealous yaḥsudūna (of) the people l-nāsa for ʿalā what mā gave them ātāhumu Allah l-lahu from min His Bounty faḍlihi But surely faqad We gave ātaynā (the) family āla (of) Ibrahim ib'rāhīma the Book l-kitāba and [the] wisdom wal-ḥik'mata and [We] gave them waātaynāhum a kingdom mul'kan great ʿaẓīman
Or do they envy people for what Allāh has given them of His bounty? But We had already given the family of Abraham the Scripture and wisdom1 and conferred upon them a great kingdom.
فَمِنْهُم Then of them famin'hum (are some) who man believed āmana in him bihi and of them wamin'hum (are some) who man turned away ṣadda from him ʿanhu and sufficient wakafā (is) Hell bijahannama (as a) Blazing Fire saʿīran
And some among them believed in it,1 and some among them were averse to it. And sufficient is Hell as a blaze.
إِنَّ Indeed inna those who alladhīna disbelieved kafarū in Our Signs biāyātinā soon sawfa We will burn them nuṣ'līhim (in) a Fire nāran Every time kullamā are roasted naḍijat their skins julūduhum We will change their baddalnāhum skins julūdan for other (than) that ghayrahā so that they may taste liyadhūqū the punishment l-ʿadhāba Indeed inna Allah l-laha is kāna All-Mighty ʿazīzan All-Wise ḥakīman
Indeed, those who disbelieve in Our verses - We will drive them into a fire. Every time their skins are roasted through, We will replace them with other skins so they may taste the punishment. Indeed, Allāh is ever Exalted in Might and Wise.
وَٱلَّذِينَ And those who wa-alladhīna believe[d] āmanū and did waʿamilū the good deeds l-ṣāliḥāti We will admit them sanud'khiluhum (in) Gardens jannātin flows tajrī from min underneath it taḥtihā the rivers l-anhāru will abide khālidīna in it fīhā forever abadan For them lahum in it fīhā (are) spouses azwājun pure muṭahharatun and We will admit them wanud'khiluhum (in the) shade ẓillan thick ẓalīlan
But those who believe and do righteous deeds - We will admit them to gardens beneath which rivers flow, wherein they abide forever. For them therein are purified spouses, and We will admit them to deepening shade.
۞ إِنَّ Indeed inna Allah l-laha orders you yamurukum to an render tu-addū the trusts l-amānāti to ilā their owners ahlihā and when wa-idhā you judge ḥakamtum between bayna the people l-nāsi to an judge taḥkumū with justice bil-ʿadli Indeed inna Allah l-laha excellently niʿimmā advises you yaʿiẓukum with it bihi Indeed inna Allah l-laha is kāna All-Hearing samīʿan All-Seeing baṣīran
Indeed, Allāh commands you to render trusts to whom they are due and when you judge between people to judge with justice. Excellent is that which Allāh instructs you. Indeed, Allāh is ever Hearing and Seeing.
يَـٰٓأَيُّهَا O you yāayyuhā who alladhīna believe[d] āmanū Obey aṭīʿū Allah l-laha and obey wa-aṭīʿū the Messenger l-rasūla and those wa-ulī (having) authority l-amri among you minkum Then if fa-in you disagree tanāzaʿtum in fī anything shayin refer it faruddūhu to ilā Allah l-lahi and the Messenger wal-rasūli if in you kuntum believe tu'minūna in Allah bil-lahi and the Day wal-yawmi [the] Last l-ākhiri That dhālika (is) best khayrun and more suitable wa-aḥsanu (for final) determination tawīlan
O you who have believed, obey Allāh and obey the Messenger and those in authority among you. And if you disagree over anything, refer it to Allāh and the Messenger, if you should believe in Allāh and the Last Day. That is the best [way] and best in result.
أَلَمْ Do not alam you see tara [towards] ilā those who alladhīna claim yazʿumūna that they annahum believe āmanū in what bimā (is) revealed unzila to you ilayka and what wamā was revealed unzila from min before you qablika They wish yurīdūna to an go for judgment yataḥākamū to ilā the false deities l-ṭāghūti and surely waqad they were ordered umirū to an reject yakfurū [with] it bihi And wishes wayurīdu the Shaitaan l-shayṭānu to an mislead them yuḍillahum astray ḍalālan far away baʿīdan
Have you not seen those who claim to have believed in what was revealed to you, [O Muḥammad], and what was revealed before you? They wish to refer legislation to ṭāghūt,1 while they were commanded to reject it; and Satan wishes to lead them far astray.
وَإِذَا And when wa-idhā it is said qīla to them lahum Come taʿālaw to ilā what mā (has) revealed anzala Allah l-lahu and to wa-ilā the Messenger l-rasūli you see ra-ayta the hypocrites l-munāfiqīna turning away yaṣuddūna from you ʿanka (in) aversion ṣudūdan
And when it is said to them, "Come to what Allāh has revealed and to the Messenger," you see the hypocrites turning away from you in aversion.
فَكَيْفَ So how fakayfa when idhā befalls them aṣābathum disaster muṣībatun for what bimā sent forth qaddamat their hands aydīhim then thumma they come to you jāūka swearing yaḥlifūna by Allah bil-lahi Not in we intended aradnā except illā good iḥ'sānan and reconciliation watawfīqan
So how [will it be] when disaster strikes them because of what their hands have put forth and then they come to you swearing by Allāh, "We intended nothing but good conduct and accommodation."
أُو۟لَـٰٓئِكَ Those ulāika (are) the ones who alladhīna knows yaʿlamu Allah l-lahu what mā (is) in fī their hearts qulūbihim so turn away fa-aʿriḍ from them ʿanhum and admonish them waʿiẓ'hum and say waqul to them lahum concerning fī their souls anfusihim a word qawlan penetrating balīghan
Those are the ones of whom Allāh knows what is in their hearts, so turn away from them1 but admonish them and speak to them a far-reaching [i.e., effective] word.
وَمَآ And not wamā We sent arsalnā any min Messenger rasūlin except illā to be obeyed liyuṭāʿa by (the) permission bi-idh'ni (of) Allah l-lahi And if walaw [that] they annahum when idh they wronged ẓalamū themselves anfusahum (had) come to you jāūka and asked forgiveness fa-is'taghfarū (of) Allah l-laha and asked forgiveness wa-is'taghfara for them lahumu the Messenger l-rasūlu surely they would have found lawajadū Allah l-laha Oft-Forgiving tawwāban Most Merciful raḥīman
And We did not send any messenger except to be obeyed by permission of Allāh. And if, when they wronged themselves, they had come to you, [O Muḥammad], and asked forgiveness of Allāh and the Messenger had asked forgiveness for them, they would have found Allāh Accepting of Repentance and Merciful.
فَلَا But no falā by your Lord warabbika not lā will they believe yu'minūna until ḥattā they make you judge yuḥakkimūka about what fīmā arises shajara between them baynahum then thumma not lā they find yajidū in fī themselves anfusihim any discomfort ḥarajan about what mimmā you (have) decided qaḍayta and submit wayusallimū (in full) submission taslīman
But no, by your Lord, they will not [truly] believe until they make you, [O Muḥammad], judge concerning that over which they dispute among themselves and then find within themselves no discomfort from what you have judged and submit in [full, willing] submission.
وَلَوْ And if walaw [that] We annā (had) decreed katabnā on them ʿalayhim that ani Kill uq'tulū yourselves anfusakum or awi Go forth ukh'rujū from min your homes diyārikum not mā they would have done it faʿalūhu except illā a few qalīlun of them min'hum But if walaw [that] they annahum had done faʿalū what mā they were advised yūʿaẓūna with [it] bihi surely (it) would have been lakāna better khayran for them lahum and stronger wa-ashadda strengthen(ing) tathbītan
And if We had decreed upon them, "Kill yourselves" or "Leave your homes," they would not have done it, except for a few of them. But if they had done what they were instructed, it would have been better for them and a firmer position [for them in faith].
وَإِذًۭا And then wa-idhan We would (have) given them laātaynāhum from min Ourselves ladunnā a reward ajran great ʿaẓīman
And then We would have given them from Us a great reward.
وَلَهَدَيْنَـٰهُمْ And We would have guided them walahadaynāhum (to the) way ṣirāṭan (the) straight mus'taqīman
And We would have guided them to a straight path.
وَمَن And whoever waman obeys yuṭiʿi Allah l-laha and the Messenger wal-rasūla then those fa-ulāika (will be) with maʿa those whom alladhīna has bestowed (His) Favor anʿama Allah l-lahu upon them ʿalayhim of mina the Prophets l-nabiyīna and the truthful wal-ṣidīqīna and the martyrs wal-shuhadāi and the righteous wal-ṣāliḥīna And excellent waḥasuna (are) those ulāika companion(s) rafīqan
And whoever obeys Allāh and the Messenger - those will be with the ones upon whom Allāh has bestowed favor of the prophets, the steadfast affirmers of truth, the martyrs and the righteous. And excellent are those as companions.
ذَٰلِكَ That dhālika (is) the Bounty l-faḍlu of mina Allah l-lahi and sufficient wakafā Allah bil-lahi (as) All-Knower ʿalīman
That is the bounty from Allāh, and sufficient is Allāh as Knower.
يَـٰٓأَيُّهَا O you yāayyuhā who alladhīna believe[d] āmanū Take khudhū your precautions ḥidh'rakum and advance fa-infirū (in) groups thubātin or awi advance infirū all together jamīʿan
O you who have believed, take your precaution and [either] go forth in companies or go forth all together.
وَإِنَّ And indeed wa-inna among you minkum (is he) who laman lags behind layubaṭṭi-anna then if fa-in befalls you aṣābatkum a disaster muṣībatun he said qāla Verily qad (has) favored anʿama Allah l-lahu [on] me ʿalayya [when] idh (that) not lam I was akun with them maʿahum present shahīdan
And indeed, there is among you he who lingers behind; and if disaster strikes you, he says, "Allāh has favored me in that I was not present with them."
وَلَئِنْ And if wala-in befalls you aṣābakum bounty faḍlun from mina Allah l-lahi he would surely say layaqūlanna as if ka-an (had) not lam there been takun between you baynakum and between him wabaynahu any affection mawaddatun Oh! I wish yālaytanī I had been kuntu with them maʿahum then I would have attained fa-afūza a success fawzan great ʿaẓīman
But if bounty comes to you from Allāh, he will surely say, as if [i.e., showing that] there had never been between you and him any affection, "Oh, I wish I had been with them so I could have attained a great attainment."1
۞ فَلْيُقَـٰتِلْ So let fight falyuqātil in fī (the) way sabīli (of) Allah l-lahi those who alladhīna sell yashrūna the life l-ḥayata (of) the world l-dun'yā for the Hereafter bil-ākhirati And whoever waman fights yuqātil in fī (the) way sabīli (of) Allah l-lahi then he is killed fayuq'tal or aw achieves victory yaghlib then soon fasawfa We will grant him nu'tīhi a reward ajran a great ʿaẓīman
So let those fight in the cause of Allāh who sell the life of this world for the Hereafter. And he who fights in the cause of Allāh and is killed or achieves victory - We will bestow upon him a great reward.
وَمَا And what wamā for you lakum (that) not lā you fight tuqātilūna in fī (the) way sabīli (of) Allah l-lahi and (for) those who are weak wal-mus'taḍʿafīna among mina the men l-rijāli and the women wal-nisāi and the children wal-wil'dāni those who alladhīna say yaqūlūna Our Lord rabbanā take us out akhrij'nā of min this hādhihi [the] town l-qaryati [the] oppressor(s) l-ẓālimi (are) its people ahluhā and appoint wa-ij'ʿal for us lanā from min Yourself ladunka a protector waliyyan and appoint wa-ij'ʿal for us lanā from min Yourself ladunka a helper naṣīran
And what is [the matter] with you that you fight not in the cause of Allāh and [for] the oppressed among men, women, and children who say, "Our Lord, take us out of this city of oppressive people and appoint for us from Yourself a protector and appoint for us from Yourself a helper"?
ٱلَّذِينَ Those who alladhīna believe āmanū they fight yuqātilūna in fī (the) way sabīli (of) Allah l-lahi and those wa-alladhīna who disbelieve kafarū they fight yuqātilūna in fī (the) way sabīli (of) the false deities l-ṭāghūti So fight (against) faqātilū (the) friends awliyāa (of) the Shaitaan l-shayṭāni Indeed inna (the) strategy kayda (of) the Shaitaan l-shayṭāni is kāna weak ḍaʿīfan
Those who believe fight in the cause of Allāh, and those who disbelieve fight in the cause of ṭāghūt.1 So fight against the allies of Satan. Indeed, the plot of Satan has ever been weak.
أَلَمْ Have not alam you seen tara [towards] ilā those who alladhīna (when) it was said qīla to them lahum Restrain kuffū your hands aydiyakum and establish wa-aqīmū the prayer l-ṣalata and give waātū the zakah l-zakata Then when falammā was ordained kutiba on them ʿalayhimu the fighting l-qitālu then idhā a group farīqun of them min'hum [they] fear yakhshawna the people l-nāsa as (they) fear kakhashyati Allah l-lahi or aw more intense ashadda fear khashyatan and they said waqālū Our Lord rabbanā why lima have You ordained katabta upon us ʿalaynā [the] fighting l-qitāla Why not lawlā You postpone (it for) us akhartanā to ilā a term ajalin near qarībin Say qul Enjoyment matāʿu (of) the world l-dun'yā (is) little qalīlun and the Hereafter wal-ākhiratu (is) better khayrun for whoever limani fears (Allah) ittaqā and not walā you will be wronged tuẓ'lamūna (even as much as) a hair on a date-seed fatīlan
Have you not seen those who were told, "Restrain your hands [from fighting]1 and establish prayer and give zakāh"? But then when battle was ordained for them, at once a party of them feared men as they fear Allāh or with [even] greater fear. They said, "Our Lord, why have You decreed upon us fighting? If only You had postponed [it for] us for a short time." Say, "The enjoyment of this world is little, and the Hereafter is better for he who fears Allāh. And injustice will not be done to you, [even] as much as a thread [inside a date seed]."
أَيْنَمَا Wherever aynamā you be takūnū will overtake you yud'rikkumu [the] death l-mawtu even if walaw you are kuntum in fī towers burūjin lofty mushayyadatin And if wa-in befalls them tuṣib'hum any good ḥasanatun they say yaqūlū This hādhihi (is) min from ʿindi Allah l-lahi And if wa-in befalls them tuṣib'hum any evil sayyi-atun they say yaqūlū This hādhihi (is) min (from) you ʿindika Say qul All kullun (is) min from ʿindi Allah l-lahi So what (is wrong) famāli (with) these hāulāi [the] people l-qawmi not lā do they seem yakādūna (to) understand yafqahūna any statement ḥadīthan
Wherever you may be, death will overtake you, even if you should be within towers of lofty construction. But if good comes to them, they say, "This is from Allāh"; and if evil befalls them, they say,1 "This is from you." Say, "All [things] are from Allāh." So what is [the matter] with those people that they can hardly understand any statement?
مَّآ What(ever) mā befalls you aṣābaka of min (the) good ḥasanatin (is) from famina Allah l-lahi and whatever wamā befalls you aṣābaka of min (the) evil sayyi-atin (is) from famin yourself nafsika And We have sent you wa-arsalnāka for the people lilnnāsi (as) a Messenger rasūlan and is sufficient wakafā Allah bil-lahi (as) a Witness shahīdan
What comes to you of good is from Allāh, but what comes to you of evil, [O man], is from yourself.1 And We have sent you, [O Muḥammad], to the people as a messenger, and sufficient is Allāh as Witness.2
مَّن (He) who man obeys yuṭiʿi the Messenger l-rasūla then surely faqad he obeyed aṭāʿa Allah l-laha and whoever waman turns away tawallā then not famā We (have) sent you arsalnāka over them ʿalayhim (as) a guardian ḥafīẓan
He who obeys the Messenger has obeyed Allāh; but those who turn away - We have not sent you over them as a guardian.
وَيَقُولُونَ And they say wayaqūlūna (We pledge) obedience ṭāʿatun Then when fa-idhā they leave barazū from min you ʿindika plan by night bayyata a group ṭāifatun of them min'hum other than ghayra that which alladhī you say taqūlu But Allah wal-lahu records yaktubu what mā they plan by night yubayyitūna So turn (away) fa-aʿriḍ from them ʿanhum and put (your) trust watawakkal in ʿalā Allah l-lahi And sufficient wakafā is Allah bil-lahi (as) a Trustee wakīlan
And they say, "[We pledge] obedience." But when they leave you, a group of them spend the night determining to do other than what you say. But Allāh records what they plan by night. So leave them alone and rely upon Allāh. And sufficient is Allāh as Disposer of affairs.
أَفَلَا Then (do) not afalā they ponder yatadabbarūna (on) the Quran l-qur'āna And if walaw it had (been) kāna (of) min from ʿindi other than ghayri Allah l-lahi surely they (would have) found lawajadū in it fīhi contradiction ikh'tilāfan much kathīran
Then do they not reflect upon the Qur’ān?1 If it had been from [any] other than Allāh, they would have found within it much contradiction.
وَإِذَا And when wa-idhā comes to them jāahum a matter amrun of mina the security l-amni or awi [the] fear l-khawfi they spread adhāʿū [with] it bihi But if walaw they (had) referred it raddūhu to ilā the Messenger l-rasūli and to wa-ilā those ulī (having) authority l-amri among them min'hum surely would have known it laʿalimahu those who alladhīna draw correct conclusion (from) it yastanbiṭūnahu among them min'hum And if not walawlā (had been the) bounty faḍlu (of) Allah l-lahi on you ʿalaykum and His Mercy waraḥmatuhu surely you (would have) followed la-ittabaʿtumu the Shaitaan l-shayṭāna except illā a few qalīlan
And when there comes to them something [i.e., information] about [public] security or fear, they spread it around. But if they had referred it back to the Messenger or to those of authority among them, then the ones who [can] draw correct conclusions from it would have known about it. And if not for the favor of Allāh upon you and His mercy, you would have followed Satan, except for a few.
فَقَـٰتِلْ So fight faqātil in fī (the) way sabīli (of) Allah l-lahi not lā are you responsible tukallafu except illā (for) yourself nafsaka And encourage waḥarriḍi the believers l-mu'minīna perhaps ʿasā Allah l-lahu will an restrain yakuffa (the) might basa (of) those who alladhīna disbelieved kafarū And Allah wal-lahu (is) Stronger ashaddu (in) Might basan and Stronger wa-ashaddu (in) punishment tankīlan
So fight, [O Muḥammad], in the cause of Allāh; you are not held responsible except for yourself. And encourage the believers [to join you] that perhaps Allāh will restrain the [military] might of those who disbelieve. And Allāh is greater in might and stronger in [exemplary] punishment.1
مَّن Whoever man intercedes yashfaʿ an intercession shafāʿatan good ḥasanatan will have yakun for him lahu a share naṣībun of it min'hā and whoever waman intercedes yashfaʿ an intercession shafāʿatan evil sayyi-atan will have yakun for him lahu a portion kif'lun of it min'hā And is wakāna Allah l-lahu on ʿalā every kulli thing shayin a Keeper muqītan
Whoever intercedes for a good cause will have a share [i.e., reward] therefrom; and whoever intercedes for an evil cause will have a portion [i.e., burden] therefrom. And ever is Allāh, over all things, a Keeper.1
وَإِذَا And when wa-idhā you are greeted ḥuyyītum with a greeting bitaḥiyyatin then greet faḥayyū with better bi-aḥsana than it min'hā or aw return it ruddūhā Indeed inna Allah l-laha is kāna of ʿalā every kulli thing shayin an Accountant ḥasīban
And when you are greeted with a greeting, greet [in return] with one better than it or [at least] return it [in a like manner]. Indeed Allāh is ever, over all things, an Accountant.
ٱللَّهُ Allah al-lahu (there is) no lā god ilāha except illā Him huwa surely He will gather you layajmaʿannakum to ilā (the) Day yawmi (of) Resurrection l-qiyāmati no lā doubt rayba about it fīhi And who waman (is) more truthful aṣdaqu than mina Allah l-lahi (in) statement ḥadīthan
Allāh - there is no deity except Him. He will surely assemble you for [account on] the Day of Resurrection, about which there is no doubt. And who is more truthful than Allāh in statement.
۞ فَمَا So what famā (is the matter) with you lakum concerning fī the hypocrites (that) l-munāfiqīna (you have become) two parties fi-atayni While Allah wal-lahu cast them back arkasahum for what bimā they earned kasabū Do you wish aturīdūna that an you guide tahdū whom man is let astray aḍalla (by) Allah l-lahu And whoever waman is let astray yuḍ'lili (by) Allah l-lahu then never falan will you find tajida for him lahu a way sabīlan
What is [the matter] with you [that you are] two groups concerning the hypocrites,1 while Allāh has made them fall back [into error and disbelief] for what they earned.2 Do you wish to guide those whom Allāh has sent astray? And he whom Allāh sends astray - never will you find for him a way [of guidance].3
وَدُّوا۟ They wish waddū if law you disbelieve takfurūna as kamā they disbelieved kafarū and you would be fatakūnūna alike sawāan So (do) not falā take tattakhidhū from them min'hum allies awliyāa until ḥattā they emigrate yuhājirū in fī (the) way sabīli (of) Allah l-lahi But if fa-in they turn back tawallaw seize them fakhudhūhum and kill them wa-uq'tulūhum wherever ḥaythu you find them wajadttumūhum And (do) not walā take tattakhidhū from them min'hum any ally waliyyan and not walā any helper naṣīran
They wish you would disbelieve as they disbelieved so you would be alike. So do not take from among them allies until they emigrate for the cause of Allāh. But if they turn away [i.e., refuse], then seize them and kill them [for their betrayal] wherever you find them and take not from among them any ally or helper,
إِلَّا Except illā those who alladhīna join yaṣilūna [to] ilā a group qawmin between you baynakum and between them wabaynahum (is) a treaty mīthāqun or aw those who come to you jāūkum restraining ḥaṣirat their hearts ṣudūruhum that an they fight you yuqātilūkum or aw they fight yuqātilū their people qawmahum And if walaw (had) willed shāa Allah l-lahu surely He (would have) given them power lasallaṭahum over you ʿalaykum and surely they (would have) fought you falaqātalūkum So if fa-ini they withdraw from you iʿ'tazalūkum and (do) not falam fight against you yuqātilūkum and offer wa-alqaw to you ilaykumu [the] peace l-salama then not famā (has) made jaʿala Allah l-lahu for you lakum against them ʿalayhim a way sabīlan
Except for those who take refuge with a people between yourselves and whom is a treaty or those who come to you, their hearts strained at [the prospect of] fighting you or fighting their own people. And if Allāh had willed, He could have given them power over you, and they would have fought you. So if they remove themselves from you and do not fight you and offer you peace, then Allāh has not made for you a cause [for fighting] against them.
سَتَجِدُونَ You will find satajidūna others ākharīna wishing yurīdūna that an they be secure from you yamanūkum and they be secure from wayamanū their people qawmahum Everytime kulla that mā they are returned ruddū to ilā the temptation l-fit'nati they are plunged ur'kisū into it fīhā So if fa-in not lam they withdraw from you yaʿtazilūkum and offer wayul'qū to you ilaykumu [the] peace l-salama and they restrain wayakuffū their hands aydiyahum then seize them fakhudhūhum and kill them wa-uq'tulūhum wherever ḥaythu you find them thaqif'tumūhum And those wa-ulāikum We made jaʿalnā for you lakum against them ʿalayhim an authority sul'ṭānan clear mubīnan
You will find others who wish to obtain security from you and [to] obtain security from their people. Every time they are returned to [the influence of] disbelief, they fall back into it. So if they do not withdraw from you or offer you peace or restrain their hands, then seize them and kill them wherever you overtake them. And those - We have made for you against them a clear authorization.
وَمَا And not wamā is kāna for a believer limu'minin that an he kills yaqtula a believer mu'minan except illā (by) mistake khaṭa-an And whoever waman killed qatala a believer mu'minan (by) mistake khaṭa-an then freeing fataḥrīru (of) a slave raqabatin believing mu'minatin and blood money wadiyatun (is to be) paid musallamatun to ilā his family ahlihi unless illā that an they remit (as) charity yaṣṣaddaqū But if fa-in (he) was kāna from min a people qawmin hostile ʿaduwwin to you lakum and he was wahuwa a believer mu'minun then freeing fataḥrīru (of) a believing slave raqabatin believing mu'minatin And if wa-in (he) was kāna from min a people qawmin between you baynakum and between them wabaynahum (is) a treaty mīthāqun then blood money fadiyatun (is to be) paid musallamatun to ilā his family ahlihi and freeing wataḥrīru (of) a slave raqabatin believing mu'minatin And whoever faman (does) not lam find yajid then fasting faṣiyāmu (for) two months shahrayni consecutively mutatābiʿayni (seeking) repentance tawbatan from mina Allah l-lahi and is wakāna Allah l-lahu All-Knowing ʿalīman All-Wise ḥakīman
And never is it for a believer to kill a believer except by mistake. And whoever kills a believer by mistake - then the freeing of a believing slave and a compensation payment [diyah] presented to his [i.e., the deceased's] family [is required], unless they give [up their right as] charity. But if he [i.e., the deceased] was from a people at war with you and he was a believer - then [only] the freeing of a believing slave; and if he was from a people with whom you have a treaty - then a compensation payment presented to his family and the freeing of a believing slave. And whoever does not find [one or cannot afford to buy one] - then [instead], a fast for two months consecutively,1 [seeking] acceptance of repentance from Allāh.2 And Allāh is ever Knowing and Wise.
وَمَن And whoever waman kills yaqtul a believer mu'minan intentionally mutaʿammidan then his recompense fajazāuhu (is) Hell jahannamu abiding forever khālidan in it fīhā and will fall the wrath waghaḍiba (of) Allah l-lahu on him ʿalayhi and He (will) curse him walaʿanahu and He has prepared wa-aʿadda for him lahu a punishment ʿadhāban great ʿaẓīman
But whoever kills a believer intentionally - his recompense is Hell, wherein he will abide eternally, and Allāh has become angry with him and has cursed him and has prepared for him a great punishment.
يَـٰٓأَيُّهَا O you yāayyuhā who alladhīna believe[d] āmanū When idhā you go forth ḍarabtum in fī (the) way sabīli (of) Allah l-lahi then investigate fatabayyanū and (do) not walā say taqūlū to (the one) who liman offers alqā to you ilaykumu (a greeting of) peace l-salāma You are not lasta a believer mu'minan seeking tabtaghūna transitory gains ʿaraḍa (of) the life l-ḥayati (of) the world l-dun'yā for with faʿinda Allah l-lahi (are) booties maghānimu abundant kathīratun Like that kadhālika you were kuntum from min before qablu then conferred favor famanna Allah l-lahu upon you ʿalaykum so investigate fatabayyanū Indeed inna Allah l-laha is kāna of what bimā you do taʿmalūna All-Aware khabīran
O you who have believed, when you go forth [to fight] in the cause of Allāh, investigate; and do not say to one who gives you [a greeting of] peace, "You are not a believer,"1 aspiring for the goods of worldly life; for with Allāh are many acquisitions. You [yourselves] were like that before; then Allāh conferred His favor [i.e., guidance] upon you, so investigate. Indeed Allāh is ever, of what you do, Aware.
لَّا Not lā (are) equal yastawī the ones who sit l-qāʿidūna among mina the believers l-mu'minīna other than ghayru the ones (who are) ulī [the] disabled l-ḍarari and the ones who strive wal-mujāhidūna in fī (the) way sabīli (of) Allah l-lahi with their wealth bi-amwālihim and their lives wa-anfusihim Preferred faḍḍala (has) Allah l-lahu the ones who strive l-mujāhidīna with their wealth bi-amwālihim and their lives wa-anfusihim to ʿalā the ones who sit l-qāʿidīna (in) rank darajatan And (to) all wakullan promised waʿada (has) Allah l-lahu the best l-ḥus'nā preferred wafaḍḍala (has) Allah l-lahu the ones who strive l-mujāhidīna over ʿalā the ones who sit l-qāʿidīna (with) a reward ajran great ʿaẓīman
Not equal are those believers remaining [at home] - other than the disabled - and the mujāhideen, [who strive and fight] in the cause of Allāh with their wealth and their lives. Allāh has preferred the mujāhideen through their wealth and their lives over those who remain [behind], by degrees. And to all [i.e., both] Allāh has promised the best [reward]. But Allāh has preferred the mujāhideen over those who remain [behind] with a great reward -
دَرَجَـٰتٍۢ Ranks darajātin from Him min'hu and forgiveness wamaghfiratan and mercy waraḥmatan And is wakāna Allah l-lahu Oft-Forgiving ghafūran Most Merciful raḥīman
Degrees [of high position] from Him and forgiveness and mercy. And Allāh is ever Forgiving and Merciful.
إِنَّ Indeed inna those whom alladhīna take them (in death) tawaffāhumu the Angels l-malāikatu (while) they (were) wronging ẓālimī themselves anfusihim they say qālū In what (condition) fīma were you kuntum They said qālū We were kunnā oppressed mus'taḍʿafīna in fī the earth l-arḍi They said qālū Not alam was takun (the) earth arḍu (of) Allah l-lahi spacious (enough) wāsiʿatan so that you (could) emigrate fatuhājirū in it fīhā Then those fa-ulāika (will have) their abode mawāhum (in) Hell jahannamu and it is an evil wasāat destination maṣīran
Indeed, those whom the angels take [in death] while wronging themselves1 - [the angels] will say, "In what [condition] were you?" They will say, "We were oppressed in the land." They [the angels] will say, "Was not the earth of Allāh spacious [enough] for you to emigrate therein?" For those, their refuge is Hell - and evil it is as a destination.
إِلَّا Except illā the oppressed l-mus'taḍʿafīna among mina the men l-rijāli and the women wal-nisāi and the children wal-wil'dāni (who) not lā are able to yastaṭīʿūna plan ḥīlatan and not walā they are directed yahtadūna (to) a way sabīlan
Except for the oppressed among men, women, and children who cannot devise a plan nor are they directed to a way1 -
فَأُو۟لَـٰٓئِكَ Then those fa-ulāika may be ʿasā Allah l-lahu will an pardon yaʿfuwa [on] them ʿanhum and is wakāna Allah l-lahu Oft-Pardoning ʿafuwwan Oft-Forgiving ghafūran
For those it is expected that Allāh will pardon them, and Allāh is ever Pardoning1 and Forgiving.
۞ وَمَن And whoever waman emigrates yuhājir in fī (the) way sabīli (of) Allah l-lahi will find yajid in fī the earth l-arḍi place(s) of refuge murāghaman many kathīran and abundance wasaʿatan And whoever waman leaves yakhruj from min his home baytihi (as) an emigrant muhājiran to ilā Allah l-lahi and His Messenger warasūlihi then thumma overtakes him yud'rik'hu [the] death l-mawtu then certainly faqad (became) incumbent waqaʿa his reward ajruhu on ʿalā Allah l-lahi And is wakāna Allah l-lahu Oft-Forgiving ghafūran Most Merciful raḥīman
And whoever emigrates for the cause of Allāh will find on the earth many [alternative] locations and abundance. And whoever leaves his home as an emigrant to Allāh and His Messenger and then death overtakes him - his reward has already become incumbent upon Allāh. And Allāh is ever Forgiving and Merciful.
وَإِذَا And when wa-idhā you travel ḍarabtum in fī the earth l-arḍi then not falaysa upon you ʿalaykum (is) any blame junāḥun that an you shorten taqṣurū [of] mina the prayer l-ṣalati if in you fear khif'tum that an (may) harm you yaftinakumu those who alladhīna disbelieved kafarū Indeed inna the disbelievers l-kāfirīna are kānū for you lakum an enemy ʿaduwwan open mubīnan
And when you travel throughout the land, there is no blame upon you for shortening the prayer,1 [especially] if you fear that those who disbelieve may disrupt [or attack] you.2 Indeed, the disbelievers are ever to you a clear enemy.
وَإِذَا And when wa-idhā you are kunta among them fīhim and you lead fa-aqamta for them lahumu the prayer l-ṣalata then let stand faltaqum a group ṭāifatun of them min'hum with you maʿaka and let them take walyakhudhū their arms asliḥatahum Then when fa-idhā they have prostrated sajadū then let them be falyakūnū from min behind you warāikum and let come (forward) waltati a group ṭāifatun other ukh'rā (which has) not lam prayed yuṣallū and let them pray falyuṣallū with you maʿaka and let them take walyakhudhū their precautions ḥidh'rahum and their arms wa-asliḥatahum Wished wadda those who alladhīna disbelieved kafarū if law you neglect taghfulūna [about] ʿan your arms asliḥatikum and your baggage wa-amtiʿatikum so (that) they (can) assault fayamīlūna [upon] you ʿalaykum (in) an attack maylatan single wāḥidatan But (there is) no walā blame junāḥa upon you ʿalaykum if in was kāna with you bikum any trouble adhan (because) of min rain maṭarin or aw you are kuntum sick marḍā that an you lay down taḍaʿū your arms asliḥatakum but take wakhudhū your precautions ḥidh'rakum Indeed inna Allah l-laha has prepared aʿadda for the disbelievers lil'kāfirīna a punishment ʿadhāban humiliating muhīnan
And when you [i.e., the commander of an army] are among them and lead them in prayer,1 let a group of them stand [in prayer] with you and let them carry their arms. And when they have prostrated, let them be [in position] behind you and have the other group come forward which has not [yet] prayed and let them pray with you, taking precaution and carrying their arms. Those who disbelieve wish that you would neglect your weapons and your baggage so they could come down upon you in one [single] attack. But there is no blame upon you, if you are troubled by rain or are ill, for putting down your arms, but take precaution. Indeed, Allāh has prepared for the disbelievers a humiliating punishment.
فَإِذَا Then when fa-idhā you (have) finished qaḍaytumu the prayer l-ṣalata then remember fa-udh'kurū Allah l-laha standing qiyāman and sitting waquʿūdan and (lying) on waʿalā your sides junūbikum But when fa-idhā you are secure iṭ'manantum then establish fa-aqīmū the (regular) prayer l-ṣalata Indeed inna the prayer l-ṣalata is kānat on ʿalā the believers l-mu'minīna prescribed kitāban (at) fixed times mawqūtan
And when you have completed the prayer, remember Allāh standing, sitting, or [lying] on your sides. But when you become secure, re-establish [regular] prayer. Indeed, prayer has been decreed upon the believers a decree of specified times.
وَلَا And (do) not walā be weak tahinū in fī pursuit ib'tighāi (of) the people l-qawmi If in you are takūnū suffering talamūna then indeed, they fa-innahum are (also) suffering yalamūna like what kamā you are suffering talamūna while you (have) hope watarjūna from mina Allah l-lahi what mā not lā they hope yarjūna And is wakāna Allah l-lahu All-Knowing ʿalīman All-Wise ḥakīman
And do not weaken in pursuit of the enemy. If you should be suffering - so are they suffering as you are suffering, but you expect from Allāh that which they expect not. And Allāh is ever Knowing and Wise.
إِنَّآ Indeed innā We (have) sent down anzalnā to you ilayka the Book l-kitāba with the truth bil-ḥaqi so that you may judge litaḥkuma between bayna the people l-nāsi with what bimā has shown you arāka Allah l-lahu And (do) not walā be takun for the deceitful lil'khāinīna a pleader khaṣīman
Indeed, We have revealed to you, [O Muḥammad], the Book in truth so you may judge between the people by that which Allāh has shown you. And do not be for the deceitful an advocate.
وَٱسْتَغْفِرِ And seek forgiveness wa-is'taghfiri (of) Allah l-laha Indeed inna Allah l-laha is kāna Oft-Forgiving ghafūran Most Merciful raḥīman
And seek forgiveness of Allāh. Indeed, Allāh is ever Forgiving and Merciful.
وَلَا And (do) not walā argue tujādil for ʿani those who alladhīna deceive yakhtānūna themselves anfusahum Indeed inna Allah l-laha (does) not lā love yuḥibbu (the one) who man is kāna treacherous khawwānan (and) sinful athīman
And do not argue on behalf of those who deceive themselves. Indeed, Allāh loves not one who is a habitually sinful deceiver.
يَسْتَخْفُونَ They seek to hide yastakhfūna from mina the people l-nāsi but not walā (can) they hide yastakhfūna from mina Allah l-lahi and He wahuwa (is) with them maʿahum when idh they plot by night yubayyitūna what mā not lā (does) he approve yarḍā of mina the word l-qawli And is wakāna Allah l-lahu of what bimā they do yaʿmalūna All-Encompassing muḥīṭan
They conceal [their evil intentions and deeds] from the people, but they cannot conceal [them] from Allāh, and He is with them [in His knowledge] when they spend the night in such as He does not accept of speech. And ever is Allāh, of what they do, encompassing.
هَـٰٓأَنتُمْ Here you are hāantum those who hāulāi [you] argue jādaltum for them ʿanhum in fī the life l-ḥayati (of) the world l-dun'yā but who faman will argue yujādilu (with) Allah l-laha for them ʿanhum (on the) Day yawma (of) [the] Resurrection l-qiyāmati or am who man will be yakūnu [over them] ʿalayhim (their) defender wakīlan
Here you are - those who argue on their behalf in [this] worldly life - but who will argue with Allāh for them on the Day of Resurrection, or who will [then] be their representative?
وَمَن And whoever waman does yaʿmal evil sūan or aw wrongs yaẓlim his soul nafsahu then thumma seeks forgiveness yastaghfiri (of) Allah l-laha he will find yajidi Allah l-laha Oft-Forgiving ghafūran Most Merciful raḥīman
And whoever does a wrong or wrongs himself but then seeks forgiveness of Allāh will find Allāh Forgiving and Merciful.
وَمَن And whoever waman earns yaksib sin ith'man then only fa-innamā he earns it yaksibuhu against ʿalā his soul nafsihi And is wakāna Allah l-lahu All-Knowing ʿalīman All-Wise ḥakīman
And whoever earns [i.e., commits] a sin only earns it against himself. And Allāh is ever Knowing and Wise.
وَمَن And whoever waman earns yaksib a fault khaṭīatan or aw a sin ith'man then thumma throws yarmi it bihi (on) an innocent barīan then surely faqadi he (has) burdened (himself) iḥ'tamala (with) a slander buh'tānan and a sin wa-ith'man manifest mubīnan
But whoever earns an offense or a sin and then blames it on an innocent [person] has taken upon himself a slander and manifest sin.
وَلَوْلَا And if not walawlā (for the) Grace faḍlu (of) Allah l-lahi upon you ʿalayka and His Mercy waraḥmatuhu surely (had) resolved lahammat a group ṭāifatun of them min'hum to an mislead you yuḍillūka But not wamā they mislead yuḍillūna except illā themselves anfusahum and not wamā they will harm you yaḍurrūnaka in min anything shayin And has sent down wa-anzala Allah l-lahu to you ʿalayka the Book l-kitāba and [the] Wisdom wal-ḥik'mata and taught you waʿallamaka what mā not lam you did takun know taʿlamu And is wakāna (the) Grace faḍlu (of) Allah l-lahi upon you ʿalayka great ʿaẓīman
And if it was not for the favor of Allāh upon you, [O Muḥammad], and His mercy, a group of them would have determined to mislead you. But they do not mislead except themselves, and they will not harm you at all. And Allāh has revealed to you the Book and wisdom and has taught you that which you did not know. And ever has the favor of Allāh upon you been great.
۞ لَّا (There is) no lā good khayra in fī much kathīrin of min their secret talk najwāhum except illā (he) who man orders amara charity biṣadaqatin or aw kindness maʿrūfin or aw conciliation iṣ'lāḥin between bayna the people l-nāsi And who waman does yafʿal that dhālika seeking ib'tighāa pleasure marḍāti (of) Allah l-lahi then soon fasawfa We will give him nu'tīhi a reward ajran great ʿaẓīman
No good is there in much of their private conversation, except for those who enjoin charity or that which is right or conciliation between people. And whoever does that seeking means to the approval of Allāh - then We are going to give him a great reward.
وَمَن And whoever waman opposes yushāqiqi the Messenger l-rasūla from min after baʿdi what mā (has) become clear tabayyana to him lahu (of) the guidance l-hudā and he follows wayattabiʿ other than ghayra (the) way sabīli (of) the believers l-mu'minīna We will turn him nuwallihi (to) what mā he (has) turned tawallā and We will burn him wanuṣ'lihi (in) Hell jahannama and evil it is wasāat (as) a destination maṣīran
And whoever opposes the Messenger after guidance has become clear to him and follows other than the way of the believers - We will give him what he has taken1 and drive him into Hell, and evil it is as a destination.
إِنَّ Indeed inna Allah l-laha does not lā forgive yaghfiru that an partners be associated yush'raka with Him bihi but He forgives wayaghfiru [what] mā other than dūna that dhālika for whom liman He wills yashāu And whoever waman associates partners yush'rik with Allah bil-lahi then surely faqad he lost (the) way ḍalla straying ḍalālan far away baʿīdan
Indeed, Allāh does not forgive association with Him, but He forgives what is less than that for whom He wills. And he who associates others with Allāh has certainly gone far astray.
إِن Not in they invoke yadʿūna from min besides Him dūnihi but illā female (deities) ināthan and not wa-in they invoke yadʿūna except illā Shaitaan shayṭānan rebellious marīdan
They call upon instead of Him none but female [deities], and they [actually] call upon none but a rebellious Satan,
لَّعَنَهُ He was cursed laʿanahu by Allah l-lahu and he said waqāla I will surely take la-attakhidhanna from min your slaves ʿibādika a portion naṣīban appointed mafrūḍan
Whom Allāh has cursed. For he had said, "I will surely take from among Your servants a specific portion.
وَلَأُضِلَّنَّهُمْ And I will surely mislead them wala-uḍillannahum and surely arouse desires in them wala-umanniyannahum and surely I will order them walaāmurannahum so they will surely cut off falayubattikunna (the) ears ādhāna (of) the cattle l-anʿāmi and surely I will order them walaāmurannahum so they will surely change falayughayyirunna (the) creation khalqa (of) Allah l-lahi And whoever waman takes yattakhidhi the Shaitaan l-shayṭāna (as) a friend waliyyan from min besides dūni Allah l-lahi then surely faqad he (has) lost khasira a loss khus'rānan manifest mubīnan
And I will mislead them, and I will arouse in them [sinful] desires, and I will command them so they will slit the ears of cattle, and I will command them so they will change the creation of Allāh." And whoever takes Satan as an ally instead of Allāh has certainly sustained a clear loss.
يَعِدُهُمْ He promises them yaʿiduhum and arouses desires in them wayumannīhim and not wamā promises them yaʿiduhumu the Shaitaan l-shayṭānu except illā deception ghurūran
He [i.e., Satan] promises them and arouses desire in them. But Satan does not promise them except delusion.
أُو۟لَـٰٓئِكَ Those ulāika their abode mawāhum (is) Hell jahannamu and not walā they will find yajidūna from it ʿanhā any escape maḥīṣan
The refuge of those will be Hell, and they will not find from it an escape.
وَٱلَّذِينَ And those who wa-alladhīna believe[d] āmanū and do waʿamilū [the] righteous deeds l-ṣāliḥāti We will admit them sanud'khiluhum (in) Gardens jannātin flow tajrī from min underneath it taḥtihā the rivers l-anhāru will abide khālidīna in it fīhā forever abadan A Promise waʿda (of) Allah l-lahi (in) truth ḥaqqan and who waman (is) truer aṣdaqu than mina Allah l-lahi (in) statement qīlan
But the ones who believe and do righteous deeds - We will admit them to gardens beneath which rivers flow, wherein they will abide forever. [It is] the promise of Allāh, [which is] truth, and who is more truthful than Allāh in statement.
لَّيْسَ Not laysa by your desire bi-amāniyyikum and not walā (by the) desire amāniyyi (of the) People ahli (of) the Book l-kitābi Whoever man does yaʿmal evil sūan will be recompensed yuj'za for it bihi and not walā he will find yajid for him lahu from min besides dūni Allah l-lahi any protector waliyyan and not walā any helper naṣīran
It [i.e., Paradise] is not [obtained] by your wishful thinking nor by that of the People of the Scripture. Whoever does a wrong will be recompensed for it, and he will not find besides Allāh a protector or a helper.
وَمَن And whoever waman does yaʿmal [of] mina [the] righteous deeds l-ṣāliḥāti from min (the) male dhakarin or aw female unthā and he wahuwa (is) a believer mu'minun then those fa-ulāika will enter yadkhulūna Paradise l-janata and not walā they will be wronged yuẓ'lamūna (even as much as) the speck on a date-seed naqīran
And whoever does righteous deeds, whether male or female, while being a believer - those will enter Paradise and will not be wronged, [even as much as] the speck on a date seed.
وَمَنْ And who waman (is) better aḥsanu (in) religion dīnan than (one) who mimman submits aslama his face wajhahu to Allah lillahi and he wahuwa (is) a good-doer muḥ'sinun and follows wa-ittabaʿa (the) religion millata (of) Ibrahim ib'rāhīma (the) upright ḥanīfan And was taken wa-ittakhadha (by) Allah l-lahu Ibrahim ib'rāhīma (as) a friend khalīlan
And who is better in religion than one who submits himself to Allāh while being a doer of good and follows the religion of Abraham, inclining toward truth? And Allāh took Abraham as an intimate friend.
وَلِلَّهِ And for Allah walillahi (is) what mā (is) in fī the heavens l-samāwāti and what wamā (is) in fī the earth l-arḍi and is wakāna Allah l-lahu of every bikulli thing shayin All-Encompassing muḥīṭan
And to Allāh belongs whatever is in the heavens and whatever is on the earth. And ever is Allāh, of all things, encompassing.
وَيَسْتَفْتُونَكَ And they seek your ruling wayastaftūnaka concerning fī the women l-nisāi Say quli Allah l-lahu gives you the ruling yuf'tīkum about them fīhinna and what wamā is recited yut'lā to you ʿalaykum in fī the Book l-kitābi concerning fī orphans yatāmā (of) girls l-nisāi (to) whom allātī not lā (do) you give them tu'tūnahunna what mā is ordained kutiba for them lahunna and you desire watarghabūna to an marry them tankiḥūhunna and the ones who are weak wal-mus'taḍʿafīna of mina the children l-wil'dāni and to wa-an stand taqūmū for orphans lil'yatāmā with justice bil-qis'ṭi And whatever wamā you do tafʿalū of min good khayrin then indeed fa-inna Allah l-laha is kāna about it bihi All-Knowing ʿalīman
And they request from you, [O Muḥammad], a [legal] ruling concerning women. Say, "Allāh gives you a ruling about them and [about] what has been recited to you in the Book concerning the orphan girls to whom you do not give what is decreed for them1 - and [yet] you desire to marry them - and concerning the oppressed among children and that you maintain for orphans [their rights] in justice." And whatever you do of good - indeed, Allāh is ever Knowing of it.
وَإِنِ And if wa-ini a woman im'ra-atun fears khāfat from min her husband baʿlihā ill-conduct nushūzan or aw desertion iʿ'rāḍan then (there is) no falā sin junāḥa on both of them ʿalayhimā that an they make terms of peace yuṣ'liḥā between themselves baynahumā a reconciliation ṣul'ḥan and [the] reconciliation wal-ṣul'ḥu (is) best khayrun And are swayed wa-uḥ'ḍirati the souls l-anfusu (by) greed l-shuḥa But if wa-in you do good tuḥ'sinū and fear (Allah) watattaqū then indeed fa-inna Allah l-laha is kāna of what bimā you do taʿmalūna All-Aware khabīran
And if a woman fears from her husband contempt or evasion, there is no sin upon them if they make terms of settlement between them - and settlement is best. And present in [human] souls is stinginess.1 But if you do good and fear Allāh - then indeed Allāh is ever, of what you do, Aware.
وَلَن And never walan will you be able tastaṭīʿū to an deal justly taʿdilū between bayna [the] women l-nisāi even if walaw you desired ḥaraṣtum but (do) not falā incline tamīlū (with) all kulla the inclination l-mayli and leave her (the other) fatadharūhā like the suspended one kal-muʿalaqati And if wa-in you reconcile tuṣ'liḥū and fear (Allah) watattaqū then indeed fa-inna Allah l-laha is kāna Oft-Forgiving ghafūran Most Merciful raḥīman
And you will never be able to be equal [in feeling] between wives, even if you should strive [to do so]. So do not incline completely [toward one] and leave another hanging.1 And if you amend [your affairs] and fear Allāh - then indeed, Allāh is ever Forgiving and Merciful.
وَإِن And if wa-in they separate yatafarraqā will be enriched yugh'ni (by) Allah l-lahu each (of them) kullan from min His abundance saʿatihi and is wakāna Allah l-lahu All-Encompassing wāsiʿan All-Wise ḥakīman
But if they separate [by divorce], Allāh will enrich each [of them] from His abundance. And ever is Allāh Encompassing and Wise.
وَلِلَّهِ And for Allah walillahi (is) whatever mā (is) in fī the heavens l-samāwāti and whatever wamā (is) in fī the earth l-arḍi And surely walaqad We have instructed waṣṣaynā those who alladhīna were given ūtū the Book l-kitāba from min before you qablikum and yourselves wa-iyyākum that ani you fear ittaqū Allah l-laha But if wa-in you disbelieve takfurū then indeed fa-inna for Allah lillahi (is) whatever mā (is) in fī the heavens l-samāwāti and whatever wamā (is) in fī the earth l-arḍi And is wakāna Allah l-lahu Free of need ghaniyyan Praiseworthy ḥamīdan
And to Allāh belongs whatever is in the heavens and whatever is on the earth. And We have instructed those who were given the Scripture before you and yourselves to fear Allāh. But if you disbelieve - then to Allāh belongs whatever is in the heavens and whatever is on the earth. And ever is Allāh Free of need and Praiseworthy.
وَلِلَّهِ And for Allah walillahi (is) whatever mā (is) in fī the heavens l-samāwāti and whatever wamā (is) in fī the earth l-arḍi And is sufficient wakafā Allah bil-lahi (as) a Disposer of affairs wakīlan
And to Allāh belongs whatever is in the heavens and whatever is on the earth. And sufficient is Allāh as Disposer of affairs.1
إِن If in He wills yasha He can take you away yudh'hib'kum O ayyuhā people l-nāsu and bring wayati others biākharīna And is wakāna Allah l-lahu over ʿalā that dhālika All-Powerful qadīran
If He wills, He can do away with you, O people, and bring others [in your place]. And ever is Allāh competent to do that.
مَّن Whoever man [is] kāna desires yurīdu reward thawāba (of) the world l-dun'yā then with faʿinda Allah l-lahi (is the) reward thawābu (of) the world l-dun'yā and the Hereafter wal-ākhirati And is wakāna Allah l-lahu All-Hearing samīʿan All-Seeing baṣīran
Whoever desires the reward of this world - then with Allāh is the reward of this world and the Hereafter. And ever is Allāh Hearing and Seeing.
۞ يَـٰٓأَيُّهَا O you yāayyuhā who alladhīna believe[d] āmanū Be kūnū custodians qawwāmīna of justice bil-qis'ṭi (as) witnesses shuhadāa to Allah lillahi even if walaw (it is) against ʿalā yourselves anfusikum or awi the parents l-wālidayni and the relatives wal-aqrabīna if in he be yakun rich ghaniyyan or aw poor faqīran for Allah fal-lahu (is) nearer awlā to both of them bihimā So (do) not falā follow tattabiʿū the desire l-hawā lest an you deviate taʿdilū And if wa-in you distort talwū or aw refrain tuʿ'riḍū then indeed fa-inna Allah l-laha is kāna of what bimā you do taʿmalūna All-Aware khabīran
O you who have believed, be persistently standing firm in justice, witnesses for Allāh, even if it be against yourselves or parents and relatives. Whether one is rich or poor, Allāh is more worthy of both.1 So follow not [personal] inclination, lest you not be just. And if you distort [your testimony] or refuse [to give it], then indeed Allāh is ever, of what you do, Aware.
يَـٰٓأَيُّهَا O you yāayyuhā who alladhīna believe[d] āmanū Believe āminū in Allah bil-lahi and His Messenger warasūlihi and the Book wal-kitābi which alladhī He revealed nazzala upon ʿalā His Messenger rasūlihi and the Book wal-kitābi which alladhī He revealed anzala from min before qablu And whoever waman disbelieves yakfur in Allah bil-lahi and His Angels wamalāikatihi and His Books wakutubihi and His Messengers warusulihi and the Day wal-yawmi the Last l-ākhiri then surely faqad he (has) lost (the) way ḍalla straying ḍalālan far away baʿīdan
O you who have believed, believe1 in Allāh and His Messenger and the Book that He sent down upon His Messenger and the Scripture which He sent down before. And whoever disbelieves in Allāh, His angels, His books, His messengers, and the Last Day has certainly gone far astray.
إِنَّ Indeed inna those who alladhīna believed āmanū then thumma disbelieved kafarū then thumma (again) believed āmanū then thumma disbelieved kafarū then thumma increased iz'dādū (in) disbelief kuf'ran not lam will yakuni Allah l-lahu forgive liyaghfira [for] them lahum and not walā will guide them liyahdiyahum (to) a (right) way sabīlan
Indeed, those who have believed then disbelieved, then believed then disbelieved, and then increased in disbelief - never will Allāh forgive them, nor will He guide them to a way.
بَشِّرِ Give tidings bashiri (to) the hypocrites l-munāfiqīna that bi-anna for them lahum (is) a punishment ʿadhāban painful alīman
Give tidings to the hypocrites that there is for them a painful punishment -
ٱلَّذِينَ Those who alladhīna take yattakhidhūna the disbelievers l-kāfirīna (as) allies awliyāa (from) min instead of dūni the believers l-mu'minīna Do they seek ayabtaghūna with them ʿindahumu the honor l-ʿizata But indeed fa-inna the honor l-ʿizata (is) for Allah lillahi all jamīʿan
Those who take disbelievers as allies instead of the believers. Do they seek with them honor [through power]? But indeed, honor belongs to Allāh entirely.1
وَقَدْ And surely waqad He has revealed nazzala to you ʿalaykum in fī the Book l-kitābi that an when idhā you hear samiʿ'tum (the) Verses āyāti (of) Allah l-lahi being rejected yuk'faru [it] bihā and ridiculed wayus'tahza-u at [it] bihā then do not falā sit taqʿudū with them maʿahum until ḥattā they engage yakhūḍū in fī a conversation ḥadīthin other than that ghayrihi Indeed, you innakum then idhan (would be) like them mith'luhum Indeed inna Allah l-laha will gather jāmiʿu the hypocrites l-munāfiqīna and the disbelievers wal-kāfirīna in fī Hell jahannama all together jamīʿan
And it has already come down to you in the Book [i.e., the Qur’ān] that when you hear the verses of Allāh [recited], they are denied [by them] and ridiculed; so do not sit with them until they enter into another conversation. Indeed, you would then be like them.1 Indeed, Allāh will gather the hypocrites and disbelievers in Hell all together -
ٱلَّذِينَ Those who alladhīna are waiting yatarabbaṣūna for you bikum Then if fa-in was kāna for you lakum a victory fatḥun from mina Allah l-lahi they say qālū Were not alam we nakun with you maʿakum But if wa-in (there) was kāna for the disbelievers lil'kāfirīna a chance naṣībun they said qālū Did not alam we have advantage nastaḥwidh over you ʿalaykum and we protected you wanamnaʿkum from mina the believers l-mu'minīna And Allah fal-lahu will judge yaḥkumu between you baynakum (on the) Day yawma (of) the Resurrection l-qiyāmati and never walan will make yajʿala Allah l-lahu for the disbelievers lil'kāfirīna over ʿalā the believers l-mu'minīna a way sabīlan
Those who wait [and watch] you. Then if you gain a victory from Allāh, they say, "Were we not with you?" But if the disbelievers have a success, they say [to them], "Did we not gain the advantage over you, but we protected you from the believers?" Allāh will judge between [all of] you on the Day of Resurrection, and never will Allāh give the disbelievers over the believers a way [to overcome them].1
إِنَّ Indeed inna the hypocrites l-munāfiqīna (seek to) deceive yukhādiʿūna Allah l-laha and (it is) He wahuwa who deceives them khādiʿuhum And when wa-idhā they stand qāmū for ilā the prayer l-ṣalati they stand qāmū lazily kusālā showing off yurāūna (to) the people l-nāsa and not walā they remember yadhkurūna Allah l-laha except illā a little qalīlan
Indeed, the hypocrites [think to] deceive Allāh, but He is deceiving them. And when they stand for prayer, they stand lazily, showing [themselves to] the people and not remembering Allāh except a little,
مُّذَبْذَبِينَ Wavering mudhabdhabīna between bayna that dhālika not lā to ilā these hāulāi and not walā to ilā those hāulāi And whoever waman has been lead astray yuḍ'lili (by) Allah l-lahu then never falan you will find tajida for him lahu a way sabīlan
Wavering between them, [belonging] neither to these [i.e., the believers] nor to those [i.e., the disbelievers]. And whoever Allāh sends astray - never will you find for him a way.
يَـٰٓأَيُّهَا O you yāayyuhā who alladhīna believe[d] āmanū (Do) not lā take tattakhidhū the disbelievers l-kāfirīna (as) allies awliyāa from min instead of dūni the believers l-mu'minīna Do you wish aturīdūna that an you make tajʿalū for Allah lillahi against you ʿalaykum an evidence sul'ṭānan clear mubīnan
O you who have believed, do not take the disbelievers as allies instead of the believers. Do you wish to give Allāh against yourselves a clear case?
إِنَّ Indeed inna the hypocrites l-munāfiqīna (will be) in fī the depths l-darki the lowest l-asfali of mina the Fire l-nāri and never walan you will find tajida for them lahum any helper naṣīran
Indeed, the hypocrites will be in the lowest depths of the Fire - and never will you find for them a helper -
إِلَّا Except illā those who alladhīna repent tābū and correct (themselves) wa-aṣlaḥū and hold fast wa-iʿ'taṣamū to Allah bil-lahi and are sincere wa-akhlaṣū (in) their religion dīnahum for Allah lillahi then those (will be) fa-ulāika with maʿa the believers l-mu'minīna And soon wasawfa will be given yu'ti (by) Allah l-lahu the believers l-mu'minīna a reward ajran great ʿaẓīman
Except for those who repent, correct themselves, hold fast to Allāh, and are sincere in their religion for Allāh, for those will be with the believers. And Allāh is going to give the believers a great reward.
مَّا What mā would do yafʿalu Allah l-lahu by punishing you biʿadhābikum if in you are grateful shakartum and you believe waāmantum And is wakāna Allah l-lahu All-Appreciative shākiran All-Knowing ʿalīman
What would Allāh do with [i.e., gain from] your punishment if you are grateful and believe? And ever is Allāh Appreciative1 and Knowing.
۞ لَّا (Does) not lā love yuḥibbu Allah l-lahu the public mention l-jahra of [the] evil bil-sūi [of] mina [the] words l-qawli except illā (by the one) who man has been wronged ẓulima And is wakāna Allah l-lahu All-Hearing samīʿan All-Knowing ʿalīman
Allāh does not like the public mention of evil except by one who has been wronged. And ever is Allāh Hearing and Knowing.
إِن If in you disclose tub'dū a good khayran or aw you conceal it tukh'fūhu or aw pardon taʿfū [of] ʿan an evil sūin then indeed fa-inna Allah l-laha is kāna Oft-Pardoning ʿafuwwan All-Powerful qadīran
If [instead] you show [some] good or conceal it or pardon an offense - indeed, Allāh is ever Pardoning and Competent.1
إِنَّ Indeed inna those who alladhīna disbelieve yakfurūna in Allah bil-lahi and His Messengers warusulihi and they wish wayurīdūna that an they differentiate yufarriqū between bayna Allah l-lahi and His Messengers warusulihi and they say wayaqūlūna We believe nu'minu in some bibaʿḍin and we disbelieve wanakfuru in others bibaʿḍin And they wish wayurīdūna that an they take yattakhidhū between bayna that dhālika a way sabīlan
Indeed, those who disbelieve in Allāh and His messengers and wish to discriminate between Allāh and His messengers and say, "We believe in some and disbelieve in others," and wish to adopt a way in between -
أُو۟لَـٰٓئِكَ Those ulāika they humu (are) the disbelievers l-kāfirūna truly ḥaqqan And We have prepared wa-aʿtadnā for the disbelievers lil'kāfirīna a punishment ʿadhāban humiliating muhīnan
Those are the disbelievers, truly. And We have prepared for the disbelievers a humiliating punishment.
وَٱلَّذِينَ And those who wa-alladhīna believe āmanū in Allah bil-lahi and His Messengers warusulihi and not walam they differentiate yufarriqū between bayna (any) one aḥadin of them min'hum those ulāika soon sawfa He will give them yu'tīhim their reward ujūrahum And is wakāna Allah l-lahu Oft-Forgiving ghafūran Most Merciful raḥīman
But they who believe in Allāh and His messengers and do not discriminate between any of them - to those He is going to give their rewards. And ever is Allāh Forgiving and Merciful.
يَسْـَٔلُكَ Ask you yasaluka (the) People ahlu (of) the Book l-kitābi that an you bring down tunazzila to them ʿalayhim a book kitāban from mina the heaven l-samāi Then indeed faqad they (had) asked sa-alū Musa mūsā greater akbara than min that dhālika for they said faqālū Show us arinā Allah l-laha manifestly jahratan so struck them fa-akhadhathumu the thunderbolt l-ṣāʿiqatu for their wrongdoing biẓul'mihim Then thumma they took ittakhadhū the calf (for worship) l-ʿij'la from min after baʿdi [what] mā came to them jāathumu the clear proofs l-bayinātu then We forgave them faʿafawnā for ʿan that dhālika And We gave waātaynā Musa mūsā an authority sul'ṭānan clear mubīnan
The People of the Scripture ask you to bring down to them a book from the heaven. But they had asked of Moses [even] greater than that and said, "Show us Allāh outright," so the thunderbolt struck them for their wrongdoing. Then they took the calf [for worship] after clear evidences had come to them, and We pardoned that. And We gave Moses a clear authority.
وَرَفَعْنَا And We raised warafaʿnā over them fawqahumu the mount l-ṭūra for their covenant bimīthāqihim and We said waqul'nā to them lahumu Enter ud'khulū the gate l-bāba prostrating sujjadan And We said waqul'nā to them lahum (Do) not lā transgress taʿdū in fī the Sabbath l-sabti And We took wa-akhadhnā from them min'hum a covenant mīthāqan solemn ghalīẓan
And We raised over them the mount for [refusal of] their covenant; and We said to them, "Enter the gate bowing humbly"; and We said to them, "Do not transgress on the sabbath"; and We took from them a solemn covenant.
فَبِمَا Then because of fabimā their breaking naqḍihim (of) their covenant mīthāqahum and their disbelief wakuf'rihim in (the) Signs biāyāti (of) Allah l-lahi and their killing waqatlihimu (of) the Prophets l-anbiyāa without bighayri any right ḥaqqin and their saying waqawlihim Our hearts qulūbunā (are) wrapped ghul'fun Nay bal (has) set a seal ṭabaʿa Allah l-lahu on their (hearts) ʿalayhā for their disbelief bikuf'rihim so not falā they believe yu'minūna except illā a few qalīlan
And [We cursed them]1 for their breaking of the covenant and their disbelief in the signs of Allāh and their killing of the prophets without right and their saying, "Our hearts are wrapped" [i.e., sealed against reception]. Rather, Allāh has sealed them because of their disbelief, so they believe not, except for a few.2
وَبِكُفْرِهِمْ And for their disbelief wabikuf'rihim and their saying waqawlihim against ʿalā Maryam maryama a slander buh'tānan great ʿaẓīman
And [We cursed them] for their disbelief and their saying against Mary a great slander1
وَقَوْلِهِمْ And for their saying waqawlihim Indeed, we innā killed qatalnā the Messiah l-masīḥa Isa ʿīsā son ib'na (of) Maryam maryama (the) Messenger rasūla (of) Allah l-lahi And not wamā they killed him qatalūhu and not wamā they crucified him ṣalabūhu but walākin it was made to appear (so) shubbiha to them lahum And indeed wa-inna those who alladhīna differ ikh'talafū in it fīhi (are) surely in lafī doubt shakkin about it min'hu Not mā for them lahum about it bihi [of] min (any) knowledge ʿil'min except illā (the) following ittibāʿa (of) assumption l-ẓani And not wamā they killed him qatalūhu certainly yaqīnan
And [for] their saying, "Indeed, we have killed the Messiah, Jesus the son of Mary, the messenger of Allāh." And they did not kill him, nor did they crucify him; but [another] was made to resemble him to them. And indeed, those who differ over it are in doubt about it. They have no knowledge of it except the following of assumption. And they did not kill him, for certain.1
بَل Nay bal he was raised rafaʿahu (by) Allah l-lahu towards Him ilayhi And is wakāna Allah l-lahu All-Mighty ʿazīzan All-Wise ḥakīman
Rather, Allāh raised him to Himself. And ever is Allāh Exalted in Might and Wise.
وَإِن And (there is) not wa-in from min (the) People ahli (of) the Book l-kitābi but illā surely he believes layu'minanna in him bihi before qabla his death mawtihi And (on the) Day wayawma (of) the Resurrection l-qiyāmati he will be yakūnu against them ʿalayhim a witness shahīdan
And there is none from the People of the Scripture but that he will surely believe in him [i.e., Jesus] before his death.1 And on the Day of Resurrection he will be against them a witness.
فَبِظُلْمٍۢ Then for (the) wrongdoing fabiẓul'min of mina those who alladhīna were Jews hādū We made unlawful ḥarramnā for them ʿalayhim good things ṭayyibātin which had been lawful uḥillat for them lahum and for their hindering wabiṣaddihim from ʿan (the) way sabīli (of) Allah l-lahi many kathīran
For wrongdoing on the part of the Jews, We made unlawful for them [certain] good foods which had been lawful to them, and for their averting from the way of Allāh many [people],
وَأَخْذِهِمُ And for their taking wa-akhdhihimu (of) [the] usury l-riba while certainly waqad they were forbidden nuhū from it ʿanhu and (for) their consuming wa-aklihim wealth amwāla (of) the people l-nāsi wrongfully bil-bāṭili And We have prepared wa-aʿtadnā for the disbelievers lil'kāfirīna among them min'hum a punishment ʿadhāban painful alīman
And [for] their taking of usury while they had been forbidden from it, and their consuming of the people's wealth unjustly. And We have prepared for the disbelievers among them a painful punishment.
لَّـٰكِنِ But lākini the ones who are firm l-rāsikhūna in fī the knowledge l-ʿil'mi among them min'hum and the believers wal-mu'minūna believe yu'minūna in what bimā (is) revealed unzila to you ilayka and what wamā was revealed unzila from min before you qablika And the ones who establish wal-muqīmīna the prayer l-ṣalata and the ones who give wal-mu'tūna the zakah l-zakata and the ones who believe wal-mu'minūna in Allah bil-lahi and the Day wal-yawmi the Last l-ākhiri those ulāika We will give them sanu'tīhim a reward ajran great ʿaẓīman
But those firm in knowledge among them and the believers believe in what has been revealed to you, [O Muḥammad], and what was revealed before you. And the establishers of prayer [especially] and the givers of zakāh and the believers in Allāh and the Last Day - those We will give a great reward.
۞ إِنَّآ Indeed, We innā have revealed awḥaynā to you ilayka as kamā We revealed awḥaynā to ilā Nuh nūḥin and the Prophets wal-nabiyīna from min after him baʿdihi and We revealed wa-awḥaynā to ilā Ibrahim ib'rāhīma and Ishmael wa-is'māʿīla and Isaac wa-is'ḥāqa and Yaqub wayaʿqūba and the tribes wal-asbāṭi and Isa waʿīsā and Ayyub wa-ayyūba and Yunus wayūnusa and Harun wahārūna and Sulaiman wasulaymāna and We gave waātaynā (to) Dawood dāwūda the Zaboor zabūran
Indeed, We have revealed to you, [O Muḥammad], as We revealed to Noah and the prophets after him. And We revealed to Abraham, Ishmael, Isaac, Jacob, the Descendants,1 Jesus, Job, Jonah, Aaron, and Solomon, and to David We gave the book [of Psalms].
وَرُسُلًۭا And Messengers warusulan surely qad We (have) mentioned them qaṣaṣnāhum to you ʿalayka from min before qablu and Messengers warusulan not lam We (have) mentioned them naqṣuṣ'hum to you ʿalayka And spoke wakallama Allah l-lahu (to) Musa mūsā (in a) conversation taklīman
And [We sent] messengers about whom We have related [their stories] to you before and messengers about whom We have not related to you. And Allāh spoke to Moses with [direct] speech.
رُّسُلًۭا Messengers rusulan bearers of glad tidings mubashirīna and warners wamundhirīna so that not li-allā there is yakūna for mankind lilnnāsi against ʿalā Allah l-lahi any argument ḥujjatun after baʿda the Messengers l-rusuli And is wakāna Allah l-lahu All-Mighty ʿazīzan All-Wise ḥakīman
[We sent] messengers as bringers of good tidings and warners so that mankind will have no argument against Allāh after the messengers. And ever is Allāh Exalted in Might and Wise.
لَّـٰكِنِ But lākini Allah l-lahu bears witness yashhadu to what bimā He (has) revealed anzala to you ilayka He has sent it down anzalahu with His Knowledge biʿil'mihi and the Angels wal-malāikatu bear witness yashhadūna And is sufficient wakafā Allah bil-lahi (as) a Witness shahīdan
But Allāh bears witness to that which He has revealed to you. He has sent it down with His knowledge, and the angels bear witness [as well]. And sufficient is Allāh as Witness.
إِنَّ Indeed inna those who alladhīna disbelieve kafarū and hinder waṣaddū from ʿan (the) way sabīli (of) Allah l-lahi surely qad they have strayed ḍallū straying ḍalālan far away baʿīdan
Indeed, those who disbelieve and avert [people] from the way of Allāh have certainly gone far astray.
إِنَّ Indeed inna those who alladhīna disbelieved kafarū and did wrong waẓalamū not lam will yakuni Allah l-lahu [to] forgive liyaghfira them lahum and not walā He will guide them liyahdiyahum (to) a way ṭarīqan
Indeed, those who disbelieve and commit wrong [or injustice] - never will Allāh forgive them, nor will He guide them to a path,
إِلَّا Except illā (the) way ṭarīqa (to) Hell jahannama abiding khālidīna in it fīhā forever abadan And is wakāna that dhālika for ʿalā Allah l-lahi easy yasīran
Except the path of Hell; they will abide therein forever. And that, for Allāh, is [always] easy.
يَـٰٓأَيُّهَا O yāayyuhā mankind l-nāsu Surely qad has come to you jāakumu the Messenger l-rasūlu with the truth bil-ḥaqi from min your Lord rabbikum so believe faāminū (it is) better khayran for you lakum But if wa-in you disbelieve takfurū then indeed fa-inna to Allah (belongs) lillahi whatever mā (is) in fī the heavens l-samāwāti and the earth wal-arḍi And is wakāna Allah l-lahu All-Knowing ʿalīman All-Wise ḥakīman
O mankind, the Messenger has come to you with the truth from your Lord, so believe; it is better for you. But if you disbelieve - then indeed, to Allāh belongs whatever is in the heavens and earth. And ever is Allāh Knowing and Wise.
يَـٰٓأَهْلَ O People yāahla (of) the Book l-kitābi (Do) not lā commit excess taghlū in fī your religion dīnikum and (do) not walā say taqūlū about ʿalā Allah l-lahi except illā the truth l-ḥaqa Only innamā the Messiah l-masīḥu Isa ʿīsā son ub'nu (of) Maryam maryama (was) a Messenger rasūlu (of) Allah l-lahi and His word wakalimatuhu which He conveyed alqāhā to ilā Maryam maryama and a spirit warūḥun from Him min'hu So believe faāminū in Allah bil-lahi and His Messengers warusulihi And (do) not walā say taqūlū Three thalāthatun desist intahū (it is) better khayran for you lakum Only innamā Allah l-lahu (is) God ilāhun One wāḥidun Glory be to Him sub'ḥānahu That an He (should) have yakūna for Him lahu a son waladun To Him (belongs) lahu whatever mā (is) in fī the heavens l-samāwāti and whatever wamā (is) in fī the earth l-arḍi And is sufficient wakafā Allah bil-lahi (as) a Disposer of affairs wakīlan
O People of the Scripture, do not commit excess in your religion1 or say about Allāh except the truth. The Messiah, Jesus the son of Mary, was but a messenger of Allāh and His word which He directed to Mary and a soul [created at a command] from Him. So believe in Allāh and His messengers. And do not say, "Three"; desist - it is better for you. Indeed, Allāh is but one God. Exalted is He above having a son. To Him belongs whatever is in the heavens and whatever is on the earth. And sufficient is Allāh as Disposer of affairs.
لَّن Never lan will disdain yastankifa the Messiah l-masīḥu to an be yakūna a slave ʿabdan of Allah lillahi and not walā the Angels l-malāikatu the ones who are near (to Allah) l-muqarabūna And whoever waman disdains yastankif from ʿan His worship ʿibādatihi and is arrogant wayastakbir then He will gather them fasayaḥshuruhum towards Him ilayhi all together jamīʿan
Never would the Messiah disdain to be a servant of Allāh, nor would the angels near [to Him]. And whoever disdains His worship and is arrogant - He will gather them to Himself all together.
فَأَمَّا Then as for fa-ammā those who alladhīna believed āmanū and did waʿamilū the righteous deeds l-ṣāliḥāti then He will give them in full fayuwaffīhim their reward ujūrahum and give them more wayazīduhum from min His Bounty faḍlihi And as for wa-ammā those who alladhīna disdained is'tankafū and were arrogant wa-is'takbarū then He will punish them fayuʿadhibuhum (with) a punishment ʿadhāban painful alīman and not walā will they find yajidūna for themselves lahum from min besides dūni Allah l-lahi any protector waliyyan and not walā any helper naṣīran
And as for those who believed and did righteous deeds, He will give them in full their rewards and grant them extra from His bounty. But as for those who disdained and were arrogant, He will punish them with a painful punishment, and they will not find for themselves besides Allāh any protector or helper.
يَـٰٓأَيُّهَا O yāayyuhā mankind l-nāsu Surely qad has come to you jāakum a convincing proof bur'hānun from min your Lord rabbikum and We (have) sent down wa-anzalnā to you ilaykum a light nūran clear mubīnan
O mankind, there has come to you a conclusive proof from your Lord, and We have sent down to you a clear light.1
فَأَمَّا So as for fa-ammā those who alladhīna believed āmanū in Allah bil-lahi and held fast wa-iʿ'taṣamū to Him bihi then He will admit them fasayud'khiluhum in fī Mercy raḥmatin from Himself min'hu and Bounty wafaḍlin and will guide them wayahdīhim to Himself ilayhi (on) a way ṣirāṭan straight mus'taqīman
So those who believe in Allāh and hold fast to Him - He will admit them to mercy from Himself and bounty and guide them to Himself on a straight path.
يَسْتَفْتُونَكَ They seek your ruling yastaftūnaka Say quli Allah l-lahu gives you a ruling yuf'tīkum concerning fī the Kalala l-kalālati if ini a man im'ru-on died halaka (and) not laysa he has lahu a child waladun and he has walahu a sister ukh'tun then for her falahā (is) a half niṣ'fu (of) what mā he left taraka And he wahuwa will inherit from her yarithuhā if in not lam is yakun for her lahā a child waladun But if fa-in there were kānatā two females ith'natayni then for them falahumā two thirds l-thuluthāni of what mimmā he left taraka But if wa-in they were kānū brothers and sisters ikh'watan men rijālan and women wanisāan then the male will have falildhakari like mith'lu share ḥaẓẓi (of) the two females l-unthayayni makes clear yubayyinu Allah l-lahu to you lakum lest an you go astray taḍillū And Allah wal-lahu of every bikulli thing shayin (is) All-Knower ʿalīmun
They request from you a [legal] ruling. Say, "Allāh gives you a ruling concerning one having neither descendants nor ascendants [as heirs]." If a man dies, leaving no child but [only] a sister, she will have half of what he left. And he inherits from her if she [dies and] has no child. But if there are two sisters [or more], they will have two thirds of what he left. If there are both brothers and sisters, the male will have the share of two females. Allāh makes clear to you [His law], lest you go astray. And Allāh is Knowing of all things.
