Al-Qāri`ah
The Calamity

القارعة
مَا What mā (is) the Striking Calamity l-qāriʿatu
What is the Striking Calamity?
وَمَآ And what wamā will make you know adrāka what mā (is) the Striking Calamity l-qāriʿatu
And what can make you know what is the Striking Calamity?
يَوْمَ (The) Day yawma will be yakūnu the mankind l-nāsu like moths kal-farāshi scattered l-mabthūthi
It is the Day when people will be like moths, dispersed,1
وَتَكُونُ And will be watakūnu the mountains l-jibālu like wool kal-ʿih'ni fluffed up l-manfūshi
And the mountains will be like wool, fluffed up.1
فَأَمَّا Then as for fa-ammā (him) whose man (are) heavy thaqulat his scales mawāzīnuhu
Then as for one whose scales are heavy [with good deeds],
فَهُوَ Then he fahuwa (will be) in fī a life ʿīshatin pleasant rāḍiyatin
He will be in a pleasant life.
وَأَمَّا But as for wa-ammā (him) whose man (are) light khaffat his scales mawāzīnuhu
But as for one whose scales are light,
فَأُمُّهُۥ His abode fa-ummuhu (will be the) Pit hāwiyatun
His refuge1 will be an abyss.2
وَمَآ And what wamā will make you know adrāka what mā it is hiyah
And what can make you know what that is?
