Al-Qiyāmah

The Resurrection

القيامة

لَآ

Nay

أُقْسِمُ

I swear

uq'simu

بِيَوْمِ

by (the) Day

biyawmi

ٱلْقِيَـٰمَةِ

(of) the Resurrection

l-qiyāmati

١

I swear by the Day of Resurrection

— Saheeh International

وَلَآ

And nay

walā

أُقْسِمُ

I swear

uq'simu

بِٱلنَّفْسِ

by the soul

bil-nafsi

ٱللَّوَّامَةِ

self-accusing

l-lawāmati

٢

And I swear by the reproaching soul1 [to the certainty of resurrection].

— Saheeh International

أَيَحْسَبُ

Does think

ayaḥsabu

ٱلْإِنسَـٰنُ

[the] man

l-insānu

أَلَّن

that not

allan

نَّجْمَعَ

We will assemble

najmaʿa

عِظَامَهُۥ

his bones

ʿiẓāmahu

٣

Does man think that We will not assemble his bones?

— Saheeh International

بَلَىٰ

Nay

balā

قَـٰدِرِينَ

(We are) Able

qādirīna

عَلَىٰٓ

on

ʿalā

أَن

that

an

نُّسَوِّىَ

We can restore

nusawwiya

بَنَانَهُۥ

his fingertips

banānahu

٤

Yes. [We are] Able [even] to proportion his fingertips.

— Saheeh International

بَلْ

Nay

bal

يُرِيدُ

Desires

yurīdu

ٱلْإِنسَـٰنُ

[the] man

l-insānu

لِيَفْجُرَ

to give (the) lie

liyafjura

أَمَامَهُۥ

(to) what is before him

amāmahu

٥

But man desires to continue in sin.1

— Saheeh International

يَسْـَٔلُ

He asks

yasalu

أَيَّانَ

When

ayyāna

يَوْمُ

(is the) Day

yawmu

ٱلْقِيَـٰمَةِ

(of) the Resurrection

l-qiyāmati

٦

He asks, "When is the Day of Resurrection?"

— Saheeh International

فَإِذَا

So when

fa-idhā

بَرِقَ

is dazzled

bariqa

ٱلْبَصَرُ

the vision

l-baṣaru

٧

So when vision is dazzled.

— Saheeh International

وَخَسَفَ

And becomes dark

wakhasafa

ٱلْقَمَرُ

the moon

l-qamaru

٨

And the moon darkens.

— Saheeh International

وَجُمِعَ

And are joined

wajumiʿa

ٱلشَّمْسُ

the sun

l-shamsu

وَٱلْقَمَرُ

and the moon

wal-qamaru

٩

And the sun and the moon are joined,

— Saheeh International

يَقُولُ

Will say

yaqūlu

ٱلْإِنسَـٰنُ

[the] man

l-insānu

يَوْمَئِذٍ

that Day

yawma-idhin

أَيْنَ

Where

ayna

ٱلْمَفَرُّ

(is) the escape

l-mafaru

١٠

Man will say on that Day, "Where is the [place of] escape?"

— Saheeh International

كَلَّا

By no means

kallā

لَا

(There is) no

وَزَرَ

refuge

wazara

١١

No! There is no refuge.

— Saheeh International

إِلَىٰ

To

ilā

رَبِّكَ

your Lord

rabbika

يَوْمَئِذٍ

that Day

yawma-idhin

ٱلْمُسْتَقَرُّ

(is) the place of rest

l-mus'taqaru

١٢

To your Lord, that Day, is the [place of] permanence.

— Saheeh International

يُنَبَّؤُا۟

Will be informed

yunabba-u

ٱلْإِنسَـٰنُ

[the] man

l-insānu

يَوْمَئِذٍۭ

that Day

yawma-idhin

بِمَا

of what

bimā

قَدَّمَ

he sent forth

qaddama

وَأَخَّرَ

and kept back

wa-akhara

١٣

Man will be informed that Day of what he sent ahead1 and kept back.2

— Saheeh International

بَلِ

Nay

bali

ٱلْإِنسَـٰنُ

[The] man

l-insānu

عَلَىٰ

against

ʿalā

نَفْسِهِۦ

himself

nafsihi

بَصِيرَةٌۭ

(will be) a witness

baṣīratun

١٤

Rather, man, against himself, will be a witness,1

— Saheeh International

وَلَوْ

Even if

walaw

أَلْقَىٰ

he presents

alqā

مَعَاذِيرَهُۥ

his excuses

maʿādhīrahu

١٥

Even if he presents his excuses.

— Saheeh International

لَا

Not

تُحَرِّكْ

move

tuḥarrik

بِهِۦ

with it

bihi

لِسَانَكَ

your tongue

lisānaka

لِتَعْجَلَ

to hasten

litaʿjala

بِهِۦٓ

with it

bihi

١٦

Move not your tongue with it, [O Muḥammad], to hasten with it [i.e., recitation of the Qur’ān].

— Saheeh International

إِنَّ

Indeed

inna

عَلَيْنَا

upon Us

ʿalaynā

جَمْعَهُۥ

(is) its collection

jamʿahu

وَقُرْءَانَهُۥ

and its recitation

waqur'ānahu

١٧

Indeed, upon Us is its collection [in your heart] and [to make possible] its recitation.

— Saheeh International

فَإِذَا

And when

fa-idhā

قَرَأْنَـٰهُ

We have recited it

qaranāhu

فَٱتَّبِعْ

then follow

fa-ittabiʿ

قُرْءَانَهُۥ

its recitation

qur'ānahu

١٨

So when We have recited it [through Gabriel], then follow its recitation.

— Saheeh International

ثُمَّ

Then

thumma

إِنَّ

indeed

inna

عَلَيْنَا

upon Us

ʿalaynā

بَيَانَهُۥ

(is) its explanation

bayānahu

١٩

Then upon Us is its clarification [to you].

— Saheeh International

كَلَّا

No

kallā

بَلْ

But

bal

تُحِبُّونَ

you love

tuḥibbūna

ٱلْعَاجِلَةَ

the immediate

l-ʿājilata

٢٠

No! But you [i.e., mankind] love the immediate

— Saheeh International

وَتَذَرُونَ

And leave

watadharūna

ٱلْـَٔاخِرَةَ

the Hereafter

l-ākhirata

٢١

And leave [i.e., neglect] the Hereafter.

— Saheeh International

وُجُوهٌۭ

Faces

wujūhun

يَوْمَئِذٍۢ

that Day

yawma-idhin

نَّاضِرَةٌ

(will be) radiant

nāḍiratun

٢٢

[Some] faces, that Day, will be radiant,

— Saheeh International

إِلَىٰ

Towards

ilā

رَبِّهَا

their Lord

rabbihā

نَاظِرَةٌۭ

looking

nāẓiratun

٢٣

Looking at their Lord.1

— Saheeh International

وَوُجُوهٌۭ

And faces

wawujūhun

يَوْمَئِذٍۭ

that Day

yawma-idhin

بَاسِرَةٌۭ

(will be) distorted

bāsiratun

٢٤

And [some] faces, that Day, will be contorted,

— Saheeh International

تَظُنُّ

Thinking

taẓunnu

أَن

that

an

يُفْعَلَ

will be done

yuf'ʿala

بِهَا

to them

bihā

فَاقِرَةٌۭ

backbreaking

fāqiratun

٢٥

Expecting that there will be done to them [something] backbreaking.

— Saheeh International

كَلَّآ

No

kallā

إِذَا

When

idhā

بَلَغَتِ

it reaches

balaghati

ٱلتَّرَاقِىَ

the collar bones

l-tarāqiya

٢٦

No! When it [i.e., the soul] has reached the collar bones1

— Saheeh International

وَقِيلَ

And it is said

waqīla

مَنْ ۜ

Who

man

رَاقٍۢ

(will) cure

rāqin

٢٧

And it is said, "Who will cure [him]?"

— Saheeh International

وَظَنَّ

And he is certain

waẓanna

أَنَّهُ

that it

annahu

ٱلْفِرَاقُ

(is) the parting

l-firāqu

٢٨

And he [i.e., the dying one] is certain that it is the [time of] separation

— Saheeh International

وَٱلْتَفَّتِ

And is wound

wal-tafati

ٱلسَّاقُ

the leg

l-sāqu

بِٱلسَّاقِ

about the leg

bil-sāqi

٢٩

And the leg is wound about the leg,1

— Saheeh International

إِلَىٰ

To

ilā

رَبِّكَ

your Lord

rabbika

يَوْمَئِذٍ

that Day

yawma-idhin

ٱلْمَسَاقُ

(will be) the driving

l-masāqu

٣٠

To your Lord, that Day, will be the procession.1

— Saheeh International

فَلَا

And not

falā

صَدَّقَ

he accepted (the) truth

ṣaddaqa

وَلَا

and not

walā

صَلَّىٰ

he prayed

ṣallā

٣١

And he [i.e., the disbeliever] had not believed, nor had he prayed.

— Saheeh International

وَلَـٰكِن

But

walākin

كَذَّبَ

he denied

kadhaba

وَتَوَلَّىٰ

and turned away

watawallā

٣٢

But [instead], he denied and turned away.

— Saheeh International

ثُمَّ

Then

thumma

ذَهَبَ

he went

dhahaba

إِلَىٰٓ

to

ilā

أَهْلِهِۦ

his family

ahlihi

يَتَمَطَّىٰٓ

swaggering

yatamaṭṭā

٣٣

And then he went to his people, swaggering [in pride].

— Saheeh International

أَوْلَىٰ

Woe

awlā

لَكَ

to you

laka

فَأَوْلَىٰ

and woe

fa-awlā

٣٤

Woe to you, and woe!

— Saheeh International

ثُمَّ

Then

thumma

أَوْلَىٰ

woe

awlā

لَكَ

to you

laka

فَأَوْلَىٰٓ

and woe

fa-awlā

٣٥

Then woe to you, and woe!

— Saheeh International

أَيَحْسَبُ

Does think

ayaḥsabu

ٱلْإِنسَـٰنُ

man

l-insānu

أَن

that

an

يُتْرَكَ

he will be left

yut'raka

سُدًى

neglected

sudan

٣٦

Does man think that he will be left neglected?1

— Saheeh International

أَلَمْ

Was not

alam

يَكُ

he

yaku

نُطْفَةًۭ

a semen-drop

nuṭ'fatan

مِّن

of

min

مَّنِىٍّۢ

semen

maniyyin

يُمْنَىٰ

emitted

yum'nā

٣٧

Had he not been a sperm from semen emitted?

— Saheeh International

ثُمَّ

Then

thumma

كَانَ

he was

kāna

عَلَقَةًۭ

a clinging substance

ʿalaqatan

فَخَلَقَ

then He created

fakhalaqa

فَسَوَّىٰ

and proportioned

fasawwā

٣٨

Then he was a clinging clot, and [Allāh] created [his form] and proportioned [him]

— Saheeh International

فَجَعَلَ

Then made

fajaʿala

مِنْهُ

of him

min'hu

ٱلزَّوْجَيْنِ

two kinds

l-zawjayni

ٱلذَّكَرَ

(the) male

l-dhakara

وَٱلْأُنثَىٰٓ

and the female

wal-unthā

٣٩

And made of him two mates, the male and the female.

— Saheeh International

أَلَيْسَ

Is not

alaysa

ذَٰلِكَ

[that]

dhālika

بِقَـٰدِرٍ

(He) Able

biqādirin

عَلَىٰٓ

[over]

ʿalā

أَن

to

an

يُحْـِۧىَ

give life

yuḥ'yiya

ٱلْمَوْتَىٰ

(to) the dead

l-mawtā

٤٠

Is not that [Creator] Able to give life to the dead?

— Saheeh International
