Al-Qiyāmah
The Resurrection

القيامة
لَآ Nay lā I swear uq'simu by (the) Day biyawmi (of) the Resurrection l-qiyāmati
I swear by the Day of Resurrection
وَلَآ And nay walā I swear uq'simu by the soul bil-nafsi self-accusing l-lawāmati
And I swear by the reproaching soul1 [to the certainty of resurrection].
أَيَحْسَبُ Does think ayaḥsabu [the] man l-insānu that not allan We will assemble najmaʿa his bones ʿiẓāmahu
Does man think that We will not assemble his bones?
بَلَىٰ Nay balā (We are) Able qādirīna on ʿalā that an We can restore nusawwiya his fingertips banānahu
Yes. [We are] Able [even] to proportion his fingertips.
بَلْ Nay bal Desires yurīdu [the] man l-insānu to give (the) lie liyafjura (to) what is before him amāmahu
But man desires to continue in sin.1
يَسْـَٔلُ He asks yasalu When ayyāna (is the) Day yawmu (of) the Resurrection l-qiyāmati
He asks, "When is the Day of Resurrection?"
فَإِذَا So when fa-idhā is dazzled bariqa the vision l-baṣaru
So when vision is dazzled.
وَجُمِعَ And are joined wajumiʿa the sun l-shamsu and the moon wal-qamaru
And the sun and the moon are joined,
يَقُولُ Will say yaqūlu [the] man l-insānu that Day yawma-idhin Where ayna (is) the escape l-mafaru
Man will say on that Day, "Where is the [place of] escape?"
إِلَىٰ To ilā your Lord rabbika that Day yawma-idhin (is) the place of rest l-mus'taqaru
To your Lord, that Day, is the [place of] permanence.
يُنَبَّؤُا۟ Will be informed yunabba-u [the] man l-insānu that Day yawma-idhin of what bimā he sent forth qaddama and kept back wa-akhara
Man will be informed that Day of what he sent ahead1 and kept back.2
بَلِ Nay bali [The] man l-insānu against ʿalā himself nafsihi (will be) a witness baṣīratun
Rather, man, against himself, will be a witness,1
وَلَوْ Even if walaw he presents alqā his excuses maʿādhīrahu
Even if he presents his excuses.
لَا Not lā move tuḥarrik with it bihi your tongue lisānaka to hasten litaʿjala with it bihi
Move not your tongue with it, [O Muḥammad], to hasten with it [i.e., recitation of the Qur’ān].
إِنَّ Indeed inna upon Us ʿalaynā (is) its collection jamʿahu and its recitation waqur'ānahu
Indeed, upon Us is its collection [in your heart] and [to make possible] its recitation.
فَإِذَا And when fa-idhā We have recited it qaranāhu then follow fa-ittabiʿ its recitation qur'ānahu
So when We have recited it [through Gabriel], then follow its recitation.
ثُمَّ Then thumma indeed inna upon Us ʿalaynā (is) its explanation bayānahu
Then upon Us is its clarification [to you].
كَلَّا No kallā But bal you love tuḥibbūna the immediate l-ʿājilata
No! But you [i.e., mankind] love the immediate
وَتَذَرُونَ And leave watadharūna the Hereafter l-ākhirata
And leave [i.e., neglect] the Hereafter.
وُجُوهٌۭ Faces wujūhun that Day yawma-idhin (will be) radiant nāḍiratun
[Some] faces, that Day, will be radiant,
إِلَىٰ Towards ilā their Lord rabbihā looking nāẓiratun
Looking at their Lord.1
وَوُجُوهٌۭ And faces wawujūhun that Day yawma-idhin (will be) distorted bāsiratun
And [some] faces, that Day, will be contorted,
تَظُنُّ Thinking taẓunnu that an will be done yuf'ʿala to them bihā backbreaking fāqiratun
Expecting that there will be done to them [something] backbreaking.
كَلَّآ No kallā When idhā it reaches balaghati the collar bones l-tarāqiya
No! When it [i.e., the soul] has reached the collar bones1
وَقِيلَ And it is said waqīla Who man (will) cure rāqin
And it is said, "Who will cure [him]?"
وَظَنَّ And he is certain waẓanna that it annahu (is) the parting l-firāqu
And he [i.e., the dying one] is certain that it is the [time of] separation
وَٱلْتَفَّتِ And is wound wal-tafati the leg l-sāqu about the leg bil-sāqi
And the leg is wound about the leg,1
إِلَىٰ To ilā your Lord rabbika that Day yawma-idhin (will be) the driving l-masāqu
To your Lord, that Day, will be the procession.1
فَلَا And not falā he accepted (the) truth ṣaddaqa and not walā he prayed ṣallā
And he [i.e., the disbeliever] had not believed, nor had he prayed.
وَلَـٰكِن But walākin he denied kadhaba and turned away watawallā
But [instead], he denied and turned away.
ثُمَّ Then thumma he went dhahaba to ilā his family ahlihi swaggering yatamaṭṭā
And then he went to his people, swaggering [in pride].
ثُمَّ Then thumma woe awlā to you laka and woe fa-awlā
Then woe to you, and woe!
أَيَحْسَبُ Does think ayaḥsabu man l-insānu that an he will be left yut'raka neglected sudan
Does man think that he will be left neglected?1
أَلَمْ Was not alam he yaku a semen-drop nuṭ'fatan of min semen maniyyin emitted yum'nā
Had he not been a sperm from semen emitted?
ثُمَّ Then thumma he was kāna a clinging substance ʿalaqatan then He created fakhalaqa and proportioned fasawwā
Then he was a clinging clot, and [Allāh] created [his form] and proportioned [him]
فَجَعَلَ Then made fajaʿala of him min'hu two kinds l-zawjayni (the) male l-dhakara and the female wal-unthā
And made of him two mates, the male and the female.
أَلَيْسَ Is not alaysa [that] dhālika (He) Able biqādirin [over] ʿalā to an give life yuḥ'yiya (to) the dead l-mawtā
Is not that [Creator] Able to give life to the dead?
