وَإِذْ

And when

wa-idh

نَجَّيْنَـٰكُم

We saved you

najjaynākum

مِّنْ

from

min

ءَالِ

(the) people

āli

فِرْعَوْنَ

(of) Firaun

fir'ʿawna

يَسُومُونَكُمْ

(who were) afflicting you (with)

yasūmūnakum

سُوٓءَ

horrible

sūa

ٱلْعَذَابِ

torment

l-ʿadhābi

يُذَبِّحُونَ

slaughtering

yudhabbiḥūna

أَبْنَآءَكُمْ

your sons

abnāakum

وَيَسْتَحْيُونَ

and letting live

wayastaḥyūna

نِسَآءَكُمْ ۚ

your women

nisāakum

وَفِى

And in

wafī

ذَٰلِكُم

that

dhālikum

بَلَآءٌۭ

(was) a trial

balāon

مِّن

from

min

رَّبِّكُمْ

your Lord

rabbikum

عَظِيمٌۭ

great

ʿaẓīmun

٤٩

And [recall] when We saved you [i.e., your forefathers] from the people of Pharaoh, who afflicted you with the worst torment, slaughtering your [newborn] sons and keeping your females alive. And in that was a great trial from your Lord.

— Saheeh International

وَإِذْ

And when

wa-idh

فَرَقْنَا

We parted

faraqnā

بِكُمُ

for you

bikumu

ٱلْبَحْرَ

the sea

l-baḥra

فَأَنجَيْنَـٰكُمْ

then We saved you

fa-anjaynākum

وَأَغْرَقْنَآ

and We drowned

wa-aghraqnā

ءَالَ

(the) people

āla

فِرْعَوْنَ

(of) Firaun

fir'ʿawna

وَأَنتُمْ

while you

wa-antum

تَنظُرُونَ

(were) looking

tanẓurūna

٥٠

And [recall] when We parted the sea for you and saved you and drowned the people of Pharaoh while you were looking on.

— Saheeh International

وَإِذْ

And when

wa-idh

وَٰعَدْنَا

We appointed

wāʿadnā

مُوسَىٰٓ

(for) Musa

mūsā

أَرْبَعِينَ

forty

arbaʿīna

لَيْلَةًۭ

nights

laylatan

ثُمَّ

Then

thumma

ٱتَّخَذْتُمُ

you took

ittakhadhtumu

ٱلْعِجْلَ

the calf

l-ʿij'la

مِنۢ

from

min

بَعْدِهِۦ

after him

baʿdihi

وَأَنتُمْ

and you

wa-antum

ظَـٰلِمُونَ

(were) wrongdoers

ẓālimūna

٥١

And [recall] when We made an appointment with Moses for forty nights. Then you took [for worship] the calf after him [i.e., his departure], while you were wrongdoers.

— Saheeh International

ثُمَّ

Then

thumma

عَفَوْنَا

We forgave

ʿafawnā

عَنكُم

you

ʿankum

مِّنۢ

from

min

بَعْدِ

after

baʿdi

ذَٰلِكَ

that

dhālika

لَعَلَّكُمْ

so that you may

laʿallakum

تَشْكُرُونَ

(be) grateful

tashkurūna

٥٢

Then We forgave you after that so perhaps you would be grateful.

— Saheeh International

وَإِذْ

And when

wa-idh

ءَاتَيْنَا

We gave

ātaynā

مُوسَى

Musa

mūsā

ٱلْكِتَـٰبَ

the Book

l-kitāba

وَٱلْفُرْقَانَ

and the Criterion

wal-fur'qāna

لَعَلَّكُمْ

perhaps you

laʿallakum

تَهْتَدُونَ

(would be) guided

tahtadūna

٥٣

And [recall] when We gave Moses the Scripture and criterion1 that perhaps you would be guided.

— Saheeh International

وَإِذْ

And when

wa-idh

قَالَ

said

qāla

مُوسَىٰ

Musa

mūsā

لِقَوْمِهِۦ

to his people

liqawmihi

يَـٰقَوْمِ

O my people

yāqawmi

إِنَّكُمْ

Indeed, you

innakum

ظَلَمْتُمْ

[you] have wronged

ẓalamtum

أَنفُسَكُم

yourselves

anfusakum

بِٱتِّخَاذِكُمُ

by your taking

bi-ittikhādhikumu

ٱلْعِجْلَ

the calf

l-ʿij'la

فَتُوبُوٓا۟

So turn in repentance

fatūbū

إِلَىٰ

to

ilā

بَارِئِكُمْ

your Creator

bāri-ikum

فَٱقْتُلُوٓا۟

and kill

fa-uq'tulū

أَنفُسَكُمْ

yourselves

anfusakum

ذَٰلِكُمْ

That

dhālikum

خَيْرٌۭ

(is) better

khayrun

لَّكُمْ

for you

lakum

عِندَ

with

ʿinda

بَارِئِكُمْ

your Creator

bāri-ikum

فَتَابَ

Then He turned

fatāba

عَلَيْكُمْ ۚ

towards you

ʿalaykum

إِنَّهُۥ

Indeed He

innahu

هُوَ

He

huwa

ٱلتَّوَّابُ

(is) the-returning

l-tawābu

ٱلرَّحِيمُ

the Most Merciful

l-raḥīmu

٥٤

And [recall] when Moses said to his people, "O my people, indeed you have wronged yourselves by your taking of the calf [for worship]. So repent to your Creator and kill yourselves [i.e., the guilty among you]. That is best for [all of] you in the sight of your Creator." Then He accepted your repentance; indeed, He is the Accepting of Repentance, the Merciful.

— Saheeh International

وَإِذْ

And when

wa-idh

قُلْتُمْ

you said

qul'tum

يَـٰمُوسَىٰ

O Musa

yāmūsā

لَن

Never

lan

نُّؤْمِنَ

(will) we believe

nu'mina

لَكَ

in you

laka

حَتَّىٰ

until

ḥattā

نَرَى

we see

narā

ٱللَّهَ

Allah

l-laha

جَهْرَةًۭ

manifestly

jahratan

فَأَخَذَتْكُمُ

So seized you

fa-akhadhatkumu

ٱلصَّـٰعِقَةُ

the thunderbolt

l-ṣāʿiqatu

وَأَنتُمْ

while you

wa-antum

تَنظُرُونَ

(were) looking

tanẓurūna

٥٥

And [recall] when you said, "O Moses, we will never believe you until we see Allāh outright"; so the thunderbolt took you while you were looking on.

— Saheeh International

ثُمَّ

Then

thumma

بَعَثْنَـٰكُم

We revived you

baʿathnākum

مِّنۢ

from

min

بَعْدِ

after

baʿdi

مَوْتِكُمْ

your death

mawtikum

لَعَلَّكُمْ

so that you may

laʿallakum

تَشْكُرُونَ

(be) grateful

tashkurūna

٥٦

Then We revived you after your death that perhaps you would be grateful.

— Saheeh International

وَظَلَّلْنَا

And We shaded

waẓallalnā

عَلَيْكُمُ

[over] you

ʿalaykumu

ٱلْغَمَامَ

(with) [the] clouds

l-ghamāma

وَأَنزَلْنَا

and We sent down

wa-anzalnā

عَلَيْكُمُ

to you

ʿalaykumu

ٱلْمَنَّ

[the] manna

l-mana

وَٱلسَّلْوَىٰ ۖ

and [the] quails

wal-salwā

كُلُوا۟

Eat

kulū

مِن

from

min

طَيِّبَـٰتِ

(the) good things

ṭayyibāti

مَا

that

رَزَقْنَـٰكُمْ ۖ

We have provided you

razaqnākum

وَمَا

And not

wamā

ظَلَمُونَا

they wronged Us

ẓalamūnā

وَلَـٰكِن

but

walākin

كَانُوٓا۟

they were

kānū

أَنفُسَهُمْ

(to) themselves

anfusahum

يَظْلِمُونَ

doing wrong

yaẓlimūna

٥٧

And We shaded you with clouds and sent down to you manna and quails, [saying], "Eat from the good things with which We have provided you." And they wronged Us not - but they were [only] wronging themselves.

— Saheeh International
