An-Nisā

The Women

النساء

يَـٰٓأَيُّهَا

O

yāayyuhā

ٱلنَّاسُ

mankind

l-nāsu

ٱتَّقُوا۟

Fear

ittaqū

رَبَّكُمُ

your Lord

rabbakumu

ٱلَّذِى

the One Who

alladhī

خَلَقَكُم

created you

khalaqakum

مِّن

from

min

نَّفْسٍۢ

a soul

nafsin

وَٰحِدَةٍۢ

single

wāḥidatin

وَخَلَقَ

and created

wakhalaqa

مِنْهَا

from it

min'hā

زَوْجَهَا

its mate

zawjahā

وَبَثَّ

and dispersed

wabatha

مِنْهُمَا

from both of them

min'humā

رِجَالًۭا

men

rijālan

كَثِيرًۭا

many

kathīran

وَنِسَآءًۭ ۚ

and women

wanisāan

وَٱتَّقُوا۟

And fear

wa-ittaqū

ٱللَّهَ

Allah

l-laha

ٱلَّذِى

(through) Whom

alladhī

تَسَآءَلُونَ

you ask

tasāalūna

بِهِۦ

[with it]

bihi

وَٱلْأَرْحَامَ ۚ

and the wombs

wal-arḥāma

إِنَّ

Indeed

inna

ٱللَّهَ

Allah

l-laha

كَانَ

is

kāna

عَلَيْكُمْ

over you

ʿalaykum

رَقِيبًۭا

Ever-Watchful

raqīban

١

O mankind, fear your Lord, who created you from one soul and created from it its mate and dispersed from both of them many men and women. And fear Allāh, through whom1 you ask one another,2 and the wombs.3 Indeed Allāh is ever,4 over you, an Observer.5

— Saheeh International

وَءَاتُوا۟

And give

waātū

ٱلْيَتَـٰمَىٰٓ

(to) the orphans

l-yatāmā

أَمْوَٰلَهُمْ ۖ

their wealth

amwālahum

وَلَا

and (do) not

walā

تَتَبَدَّلُوا۟

exchange

tatabaddalū

ٱلْخَبِيثَ

the bad

l-khabītha

بِٱلطَّيِّبِ ۖ

with the good

bil-ṭayibi

وَلَا

and (do) not

walā

تَأْكُلُوٓا۟

consume

takulū

أَمْوَٰلَهُمْ

their wealth

amwālahum

إِلَىٰٓ

with

ilā

أَمْوَٰلِكُمْ ۚ

your wealth

amwālikum

إِنَّهُۥ

Indeed, it

innahu

كَانَ

is

kāna

حُوبًۭا

a sin

ḥūban

كَبِيرًۭا

great

kabīran

٢

And give to the orphans their properties and do not substitute the defective [of your own] for the good [of theirs]. And do not consume their properties into your own. Indeed, that is ever a great sin.

— Saheeh International

وَإِنْ

And if

wa-in

خِفْتُمْ

you fear

khif'tum

أَلَّا

that not

allā

تُقْسِطُوا۟

you will be able to do justice

tuq'siṭū

فِى

with

ٱلْيَتَـٰمَىٰ

the orphans

l-yatāmā

فَٱنكِحُوا۟

then marry

fa-inkiḥū

مَا

what

طَابَ

seems suitable

ṭāba

لَكُم

to you

lakum

مِّنَ

from

mina

ٱلنِّسَآءِ

the women

l-nisāi

مَثْنَىٰ

two

mathnā

وَثُلَـٰثَ

or three

wathulātha

وَرُبَـٰعَ ۖ

or four

warubāʿa

فَإِنْ

But if

fa-in

خِفْتُمْ

you fear

khif'tum

أَلَّا

that not

allā

تَعْدِلُوا۟

you can do justice

taʿdilū

فَوَٰحِدَةً

then (marry) one

fawāḥidatan

أَوْ

or

aw

مَا

what

مَلَكَتْ

possesses

malakat

أَيْمَـٰنُكُمْ ۚ

your right hand

aymānukum

ذَٰلِكَ

That

dhālika

أَدْنَىٰٓ

(is) more appropriate

adnā

أَلَّا

that (may) not

allā

تَعُولُوا۟

you oppress

taʿūlū

٣

And if you fear that you will not deal justly with the orphan girls, then marry those that please you of [other] women, two or three or four. But if you fear that you will not be just, then [marry only] one or those your right hands possess [i.e., slaves]. That is more suitable that you may not incline [to injustice].

— Saheeh International

وَءَاتُوا۟

And give

waātū

ٱلنِّسَآءَ

the women

l-nisāa

صَدُقَـٰتِهِنَّ

their dower

ṣaduqātihinna

نِحْلَةًۭ ۚ

graciously

niḥ'latan

فَإِن

But if

fa-in

طِبْنَ

they remit

ṭib'na

لَكُمْ

to you

lakum

عَن

of

ʿan

شَىْءٍۢ

anything

shayin

مِّنْهُ

of it

min'hu

نَفْسًۭا

(on their) own

nafsan

فَكُلُوهُ

then eat it

fakulūhu

هَنِيٓـًۭٔا

(in) satisfaction

hanīan

مَّرِيٓـًۭٔا

(and) ease

marīan

٤

And give the women [upon marriage] their [bridal] gifts1 graciously. But if they give up willingly to you anything of it, then take it in satisfaction and ease.2

— Saheeh International

وَلَا

And (do) not

walā

تُؤْتُوا۟

give

tu'tū

ٱلسُّفَهَآءَ

the foolish

l-sufahāa

أَمْوَٰلَكُمُ

your wealth

amwālakumu

ٱلَّتِى

which

allatī

جَعَلَ

(was) made

jaʿala

ٱللَّهُ

(by) Allah

l-lahu

لَكُمْ

for you

lakum

قِيَـٰمًۭا

a means of support

qiyāman

وَٱرْزُقُوهُمْ

(but) provide (for) them

wa-ur'zuqūhum

فِيهَا

with it

fīhā

وَٱكْسُوهُمْ

and clothe them

wa-ik'sūhum

وَقُولُوا۟

and speak

waqūlū

لَهُمْ

to them

lahum

قَوْلًۭا

words

qawlan

مَّعْرُوفًۭا

(of) kindness

maʿrūfan

٥

And do not give the weak-minded your property,1 which Allāh has made a means of sustenance for you, but provide for them with it and clothe them and speak to them words of appropriate kindness.

— Saheeh International

وَٱبْتَلُوا۟

And test

wa-ib'talū

ٱلْيَتَـٰمَىٰ

the orphans

l-yatāmā

حَتَّىٰٓ

until

ḥattā

إِذَا

[when]

idhā

بَلَغُوا۟

they reach[ed]

balaghū

ٱلنِّكَاحَ

(the age of) marriage

l-nikāḥa

فَإِنْ

then if

fa-in

ءَانَسْتُم

you perceive

ānastum

مِّنْهُمْ

in them

min'hum

رُشْدًۭا

sound judgement

rush'dan

فَٱدْفَعُوٓا۟

then deliver

fa-id'faʿū

إِلَيْهِمْ

to them

ilayhim

أَمْوَٰلَهُمْ ۖ

their wealth

amwālahum

وَلَا

And (do) not

walā

تَأْكُلُوهَآ

eat it

takulūhā

إِسْرَافًۭا

extravagantly

is'rāfan

وَبِدَارًا

and hastily

wabidāran

أَن

(fearing) that

an

يَكْبَرُوا۟ ۚ

they will grow up

yakbarū

وَمَن

And whoever

waman

كَانَ

is

kāna

غَنِيًّۭا

rich

ghaniyyan

فَلْيَسْتَعْفِفْ ۖ

then he should refrain

falyastaʿfif

وَمَن

and whoever

waman

كَانَ

is

kāna

فَقِيرًۭا

poor

faqīran

فَلْيَأْكُلْ

then let him eat (of it)

falyakul

بِٱلْمَعْرُوفِ ۚ

in a fair manner

bil-maʿrūfi

فَإِذَا

Then when

fa-idhā

دَفَعْتُمْ

you deliver

dafaʿtum

إِلَيْهِمْ

to them

ilayhim

أَمْوَٰلَهُمْ

their wealth

amwālahum

فَأَشْهِدُوا۟

then take witnesses

fa-ashhidū

عَلَيْهِمْ ۚ

on them

ʿalayhim

وَكَفَىٰ

And is sufficient

wakafā

بِٱللَّهِ

Allah

bil-lahi

حَسِيبًۭا

(as) a Reckoner

ḥasīban

٦

And test the orphans [in their abilities] until they reach marriageable age. Then if you perceive in them sound judgement, release their property to them. And do not consume it excessively and quickly, [anticipating] that they will grow up. And whoever, [when acting as guardian], is self-sufficient should refrain [from taking a fee]; and whoever is poor - let him take according to what is acceptable. Then when you release their property to them, bring witnesses upon them. And sufficient is Allāh as Accountant.
