وَمَآ And what wamā struck you aṣābakum (on the) day yawma (when) met l-taqā the two hosts l-jamʿāni (was) by (the) permission fabi-idh'ni (of) Allah l-lahi and that He (might) make evident waliyaʿlama the believers l-mu'minīna
And what struck you on the day the two armies met [at Uḥud] was by permission of Allāh that He might make evident the [true] believers
وَلِيَعْلَمَ And that He (might) make evident waliyaʿlama those who alladhīna (are) hypocrites nāfaqū And it was said waqīla to them lahum Come taʿālaw fight qātilū in fī (the) way sabīli (of) Allah l-lahi or awi defend id'faʿū They said qālū If law we knew naʿlamu fighting qitālan certainly we (would have) followed you la-ittabaʿnākum They hum to disbelief lil'kuf'ri that day yawma-idhin (were) nearer aqrabu than [them] min'hum to the faith lil'īmāni saying yaqūlūna with their mouths bi-afwāhihim what mā was not laysa in fī their hearts qulūbihim And Allah wal-lahu (is) Most Knowing aʿlamu of what bimā they conceal yaktumūna
And that He might make evident those who are hypocrites. For it was said to them, "Come, fight in the way of Allāh or [at least] defend." They said, "If we had known [there would be] battle, we would have followed you." They were nearer to disbelief that day than to faith, saying with their mouths what was not in their hearts. And Allāh is most knowing of what they conceal -
ٱلَّذِينَ Those who alladhīna said qālū about their brothers li-ikh'wānihim while they sat waqaʿadū If law they (had) obeyed us aṭāʿūnā not mā they would have been killed qutilū Say qul Then avert fa-id'raū from ʿan yourselves anfusikumu [the] death l-mawta if in you are kuntum truthful ṣādiqīna
Those who said about their brothers while sitting [at home], "If they had obeyed us, they would not have been killed." Say, "Then prevent death from yourselves, if you should be truthful."
وَلَا And (do) not walā think taḥsabanna (of) those who alladhīna are killed qutilū in fī (the) way sabīli (of) Allah l-lahi (as) dead amwātan Nay bal They are alive aḥyāon near ʿinda their Lord rabbihim they are given provision yur'zaqūna
And never think of those who have been killed in the cause of Allāh as dead. Rather, they are alive with their Lord, receiving provision,
فَرِحِينَ Rejoicing fariḥīna in what bimā bestowed them ātāhumu Allah l-lahu of min His Bounty faḍlihi and they receive good tidings wayastabshirūna about those who bi-alladhīna (have) not lam yet joined yalḥaqū [with] them bihim [from] min (but are) left behind khalfihim that (there will be) no allā fear khawfun on them ʿalayhim and not walā they hum will grieve yaḥzanūna
Rejoicing in what Allāh has bestowed upon them of His bounty, and they receive good tidings about those [to be martyred] after them who have not yet joined them - that there will be no fear concerning them, nor will they grieve.
۞ يَسْتَبْشِرُونَ They receive good tidings yastabshirūna of Favor biniʿ'matin from mina Allah l-lahi and Bounty wafaḍlin and that wa-anna Allah l-laha (does) not lā let go waste yuḍīʿu (the) reward ajra (of) the believers l-mu'minīna
They receive good tidings of favor from Allāh and bounty and [of the fact] that Allāh does not allow the reward of believers to be lost -
ٱلَّذِينَ Those who alladhīna responded is'tajābū to Allah lillahi and the Messenger wal-rasūli from min after baʿdi what mā befell them aṣābahumu the injury l-qarḥu for those who lilladhīna did good aḥsanū among them min'hum and feared Allah wa-ittaqaw (is) a reward ajrun great ʿaẓīmun
Those [believers] who responded to Allāh and the Messenger after injury had struck them. For those who did good among them and feared Allāh is a great reward -
ٱلَّذِينَ Those who alladhīna said qāla to them lahumu [the people] l-nāsu Indeed inna the people l-nāsa (have) certainly qad gathered jamaʿū against you lakum so fear them fa-ikh'shawhum But it increased them fazādahum (in) faith īmānan and they said waqālū Sufficient for us ḥasbunā (is) Allah l-lahu and (He is the) best waniʿ'ma [the] Disposer of affairs l-wakīlu
Those to whom people [i.e., hypocrites] said, "Indeed, the people have gathered against you, so fear them." But it [merely] increased them in faith, and they said, "Sufficient for us is Allāh, and [He is] the best Disposer of affairs."1
