وَلَئِن And if wala-in you die muttum or aw are killed qutil'tum surely to la-ilā Allah l-lahi you will be gathered tuḥ'sharūna
And whether you die or are killed, unto Allāh you will be gathered.
فَبِمَا So because fabimā (of) Mercy raḥmatin from mina Allah l-lahi you dealt gently linta with them lahum And if walaw you had been kunta rude faẓẓan (and) harsh ghalīẓa (at) [the] heart l-qalbi surely they (would have) dispersed la-infaḍḍū from min around you ḥawlika Then pardon fa-uʿ'fu [from] them ʿanhum and ask forgiveness wa-is'taghfir for them lahum and consult them washāwir'hum in fī the matter l-amri Then when fa-idhā you have decided ʿazamta then put trust fatawakkal on ʿalā Allah l-lahi Indeed inna Allah l-laha loves yuḥibbu the ones who put trust (in Him) l-mutawakilīna
So by mercy from Allāh, [O Muḥammad], you were lenient with them. And if you had been rude [in speech] and harsh in heart, they would have disbanded from about you. So pardon them and ask forgiveness for them and consult them in the matter. And when you have decided, then rely upon Allāh. Indeed, Allāh loves those who rely [upon Him].
إِن If in helps you yanṣur'kumu Allah l-lahu then not falā (can) overcome ghāliba [for] you lakum and if wa-in He forsakes you yakhdhul'kum then who faman (is) dhā the one who alladhī can help you yanṣurukum from min after Him baʿdihi And on waʿalā Allah l-lahi let put (their) trust falyatawakkali the believers l-mu'minūna
If Allāh should aid you, no one can overcome you; but if He should forsake you, who is there that can aid you after Him? And upon Allāh let the believers rely.
وَمَا And not wamā is kāna for a Prophet linabiyyin that an he defrauds yaghulla And whoever waman defrauds yaghlul will bring yati what bimā he had defrauded ghalla (on the) Day yawma (of) Resurrection l-qiyāmati Then thumma is repaid in full tuwaffā every kullu soul nafsin what mā it earned kasabat and they wahum (will) not lā be wronged yuẓ'lamūna
It is not [attributable] to any prophet that he would act unfaithfully [in regard to war booty]. And whoever betrays, [taking unlawfully], will come with what he took on the Day of Resurrection. Then will every soul be [fully] compensated for what it earned, and they will not be wronged.
أَفَمَنِ So is (the one) who afamani pursues ittabaʿa (the) pleasure riḍ'wāna (of) Allah l-lahi like (the one) who kaman draws bāa on (himself) wrath bisakhaṭin of mina Allah l-lahi and his abode wamawāhu (is) hell jahannamu and wretched wabi'sa (is) the destination l-maṣīru
So is one who pursues the pleasure of Allāh like one who brings upon himself the anger of Allāh and whose refuge is Hell? And wretched is the destination.
هُمْ They hum (are in varying) degrees darajātun near ʿinda Allah l-lahi and Allah wal-lahu (is) All-Seer baṣīrun of what bimā they do yaʿmalūna
They are [varying] degrees in the sight of Allāh, and Allāh is Seeing of whatever they do.
لَقَدْ Certainly laqad bestowed a Favor manna Allah l-lahu upon ʿalā the believers l-mu'minīna as idh He raised baʿatha among them fīhim a Messenger rasūlan from min themselves anfusihim reciting yatlū to them ʿalayhim His Verses āyātihi and purifying them wayuzakkīhim and teaching them wayuʿallimuhumu the Book l-kitāba and the wisdom wal-ḥik'mata although wa-in they were kānū from min before (that) qablu certainly in lafī (the) error ḍalālin clear mubīnin
Certainly did Allāh confer [great] favor upon the believers when He sent among them a Messenger from themselves, reciting to them His verses and purifying them and teaching them the Book [i.e., the Qur’ān] and wisdom,1 although they had been before in manifest error.
أَوَلَمَّآ Or when awalammā struck you aṣābatkum disaster muṣībatun surely qad you (had) struck (them) aṣabtum twice of it mith'layhā you said qul'tum From where annā (is) this hādhā Say qul It huwa (is) min from ʿindi yourselves anfusikum Indeed inna Allah l-laha (is) on ʿalā every kulli thing shayin All-Powerful qadīrun
Why [is it that] when a [single] disaster struck you [on the day of Uḥud], although you had struck [the enemy in the battle of Badr] with one twice as great, you said, "From where is this?" Say, "It is from yourselves [i.e., due to your sin]." Indeed, Allāh is over all things competent.
