ثُمَّ Then thumma He sent down anzala upon you ʿalaykum from min after baʿdi the distress l-ghami security amanatan slumber nuʿāsan overcoming yaghshā a group ṭāifatan of you minkum while a group waṭāifatun certainly qad worried [them] ahammathum (about) themselves anfusuhum thinking yaẓunnūna about Allah bil-lahi other than ghayra the truth l-ḥaqi (the) thought ẓanna (of) [the] ignorance l-jāhiliyati saying yaqūlūna Is (there) hal for us lanā from mina the matter l-amri any min thing shayin Say qul Indeed inna the matter l-amra all (of) it kullahu (is) for Allah lillahi They hide yukh'fūna in fī themselves anfusihim what mā not lā they reveal yub'dūna to you laka They say yaqūlūna If law was kāna for us lanā from mina the matter l-amri anything shayon not mā we would have been killed qutil'nā here hāhunā Say qul If law you were kuntum in fī your houses buyūtikum surely (would have) come out labaraza those who alladhīna was decreed kutiba upon them ʿalayhimu [the] death l-qatlu towards ilā their places of death maḍājiʿihim And that might test waliyabtaliya Allah l-lahu what mā (is) in fī your breasts ṣudūrikum and that He may purge waliyumaḥḥiṣa what mā (is) in fī your hearts qulūbikum And Allah wal-lahu (is) All-Aware ʿalīmun of what bidhāti (is in) the breasts l-ṣudūri
Then after distress, He sent down upon you security [in the form of] drowsiness, overcoming a faction of you, while another faction worried about themselves, thinking of Allāh other than the truth - the thought of ignorance, saying, "Is there anything for us [to have done] in this matter?" Say, "Indeed, the matter belongs completely to Allāh." They conceal within themselves what they will not reveal to you. They say, "If there was anything we could have done in the matter, we [i.e., some of us] would not have been killed right here." Say, "Even if you had been inside your houses, those decreed to be killed would have come out to their death beds." [It was] so that Allāh might test what is in your breasts and purify what is in your hearts. And Allāh is Knowing of that within the breasts.
إِنَّ Indeed inna those who alladhīna turned back tawallaw among you minkum (on the) day yawma met l-taqā the two hosts l-jamʿāni only innamā made them slip is'tazallahumu the Shaitaan l-shayṭānu for some bibaʿḍi (of) what mā they (had) earned kasabū And surely walaqad forgave ʿafā Allah l-lahu [on] them ʿanhum indeed inna Allah l-laha (is) Oft-Forgiving ghafūrun All-Forbearing ḥalīmun
Indeed, those of you who turned back on the day the two armies met [at Uḥud] - it was Satan who caused them to slip because of some [blame] they had earned. But Allāh has already forgiven them. Indeed, Allāh is Forgiving and Forbearing.
يَـٰٓأَيُّهَا O you yāayyuhā who alladhīna believe[d] āmanū (Do) not lā be takūnū like those who ka-alladhīna disbelieved kafarū and they said waqālū about their brothers li-ikh'wānihim when idhā they traveled ḍarabū in fī the earth l-arḍi or aw they were kānū fighting ghuzzan If law they had been kānū with us ʿindanā not mā they (would have) died mātū and not wamā they (would have) been killed qutilū So makes liyajʿala Allah l-lahu that dhālika a regret ḥasratan in fī their hearts qulūbihim And Allah wal-lahu gives life yuḥ'yī and causes death wayumītu and Allah wal-lahu of what bimā you do taʿmalūna (is) All-Seer baṣīrun
O you who have believed, do not be like those who disbelieved and said about their brothers when they traveled through the land or went out to fight, "If they had been with us, they would not have died or have been killed," so Allāh makes that [misconception] a regret within their hearts. And it is Allāh who gives life and causes death, and Allāh is Seeing of what you do.
وَلَئِن And if wala-in you are killed qutil'tum in fī (the) way sabīli (of) Allah l-lahi or aw die[d] muttum certainly forgiveness lamaghfiratun from mina Allah l-lahi and Mercy waraḥmatun (are) better khayrun than what mimmā they accumulate yajmaʿūna
And if you are killed in the cause of Allāh or die - then forgiveness from Allāh and mercy are better than whatever they accumulate [in this world].
