يَـٰٓأَيُّهَا O you yāayyuhā who alladhīna believe āmanū If in you obey tuṭīʿū those who alladhīna disbelieve kafarū they will turn you back yaruddūkum on ʿalā your heels aʿqābikum then you will turn back fatanqalibū (as) losers khāsirīna
O you who have believed, if you obey those who disbelieve, they will turn you back on your heels, and you will [then] become losers.
بَلِ Nay bali Allah l-lahu (is) your Protector mawlākum and He wahuwa (is the) best khayru (of) the Helpers l-nāṣirīna
But Allāh is your protector, and He is the best of helpers.
سَنُلْقِى We will cast sanul'qī in fī (the) hearts qulūbi (of) those who alladhīna disbelieve kafarū [the] terror l-ruʿ'ba because bimā they associated partners ashrakū with Allah bil-lahi what mā not lam He sent down yunazzil about it bihi any authority sul'ṭānan and their refuge wamawāhumu (will be) the Fire l-nāru and wretched wabi'sa (is the) abode mathwā [of] the wrongdoers l-ẓālimīna
We will cast terror into the hearts of those who disbelieve for what they have associated with Allāh of which He had not sent down [any] authority.1 And their refuge will be the Fire, and wretched is the residence of the wrongdoers.
وَلَقَدْ And certainly walaqad fulfilled to you ṣadaqakumu Allah l-lahu His promise waʿdahu when idh you were killing them taḥussūnahum by His permission bi-idh'nihi until ḥattā when idhā you lost courage fashil'tum and you fell into dispute watanāzaʿtum concerning fī the order l-amri and you disobeyed waʿaṣaytum from min after baʿdi [what] mā He (had) shown you arākum what mā you love tuḥibbūna Among you minkum (are some) who man desire yurīdu the world l-dun'yā and among you waminkum (are some) who man desire yurīdu the Hereafter l-ākhirata Then thumma He diverted you ṣarafakum from them ʿanhum so that He may test you liyabtaliyakum And surely walaqad He forgave ʿafā you ʿankum And Allah wal-lahu (is the) Possessor dhū (of) Bounty faḍlin for ʿalā the believers l-mu'minīna
And Allāh had certainly fulfilled His promise to you when you were killing them [i.e., the enemy] by His permission until [the time] when you lost courage and fell to disputing about the order [given by the Prophet (ﷺ)] and disobeyed after He had shown you that which you love.1 Among you are some who desire this world, and among you are some who desire the Hereafter. Then He turned you back from them [defeated] that He might test you. And He has already forgiven you, and Allāh is the possessor of bounty for the believers.
۞ إِذْ When idh you were running uphill tuṣ'ʿidūna and not walā casting a glance talwūna on ʿalā anyone aḥadin while the Messenger wal-rasūlu was calling you yadʿūkum [in] fī (from) behind you ukh'rākum So (He) repaid you fa-athābakum (with) distress ghamman on distress bighammin so that not likaylā you grieve taḥzanū over ʿalā what mā escaped you fātakum and not walā what mā (had) befallen you aṣābakum And Allah wal-lahu (is) All-Aware khabīrun of what bimā you do taʿmalūna
[Remember] when you [fled and] climbed [the mountain] without looking aside at anyone while the Messenger was calling you from behind. So Allāh repaid you with distress upon distress so you would not grieve for that which had escaped you [of victory and spoils of war] or [for] that which had befallen you [of injury and death]. And Allāh is [fully] Aware of what you do.
