وَلِيُمَحِّصَ And so that may purify waliyumaḥḥiṣa Allah l-lahu those who alladhīna believe āmanū and destroy wayamḥaqa the disbelievers l-kāfirīna
And that Allāh may purify the believers [through trials] and destroy the disbelievers.
أَمْ Or am do you think ḥasib'tum that an you will enter tadkhulū Paradise l-janata while has not yet walammā made evident yaʿlami Allah l-lahu those who alladhīna strove hard jāhadū among you minkum and made evident wayaʿlama the steadfast l-ṣābirīna
Or do you think that you will enter Paradise while Allāh has not yet made evident those of you who fight in His cause and made evident those who are steadfast?
وَلَقَدْ And certainly walaqad you used to kuntum wish tamannawna (for) death l-mawta from min before qabli [that] an you met it talqawhu then indeed faqad you have seen it ra-aytumūhu while you (were) wa-antum looking on tanẓurūna
And you had certainly wished for death [i.e., martyrdom] before you encountered it, and you have [now] seen it [before you] while you were looking on.
وَمَا And not wamā (is) Muhammad muḥammadun except illā a Messenger rasūlun certainly qad passed away khalat from min before him qablihi [the] (other) Messengers l-rusulu So if afa-in he died māta or aw is slain qutila will you turn back inqalabtum on ʿalā your heels aʿqābikum And whoever waman turns back yanqalib on ʿalā his heels ʿaqibayhi then never falan will he harm yaḍurra Allah l-laha (in) anything shayan And will reward wasayajzī Allah l-lahu the grateful ones l-shākirīna
Muḥammad is not but a messenger. [Other] messengers have passed on before him. So if he was to die or be killed, would you turn back on your heels [to unbelief]? And he who turns back on his heels will never harm Allāh at all; but Allāh will reward the grateful.
وَمَا And not wamā is kāna for a soul linafsin that an he dies tamūta except illā by (the) permission bi-idh'ni (of) Allah l-lahi (at a) decree kitāban determined mu-ajjalan And whoever waman desires yurid reward thawāba (of) the world l-dun'yā We will give him nu'tihi thereof min'hā and whoever waman desires yurid reward thawāba (of) the Hereafter l-ākhirati We will give him nu'tihi thereof min'hā And We will reward wasanajzī the grateful ones l-shākirīna
And it is not [possible] for one to die except by permission of Allāh at a decree determined. And whoever desires the reward of this world - We will give him thereof; and whoever desires the reward of the Hereafter - We will give him thereof. And We will reward the grateful.
وَكَأَيِّن And how many waka-ayyin from min a Prophet nabiyyin fought qātala with him maʿahu (were) religious scholars ribbiyyūna many kathīrun But not famā they lost heart wahanū for what limā befell them aṣābahum in fī (the) way sabīli (of) Allah l-lahi and not wamā they weakened ḍaʿufū and not wamā they gave in is'takānū And Allah wal-lahu loves yuḥibbu the patient ones l-ṣābirīna
And how many a prophet [fought in battle and] with him fought many religious scholars. But they never lost assurance due to what afflicted them in the cause of Allāh, nor did they weaken or submit. And Allāh loves the steadfast.
وَمَا And not wamā were kāna their words qawlahum except illā that an they said qālū Our Lord rabbanā forgive igh'fir for us lanā our sins dhunūbanā and our excesses wa-is'rāfanā in fī our affairs amrinā and make firm wathabbit our feet aqdāmanā and give us victory wa-unṣur'nā over ʿalā [the people] l-qawmi the disbelievers l-kāfirīna
And their words were not but that they said, "Our Lord, forgive us our sins and the excess [committed] in our affairs and plant firmly our feet and give us victory over the disbelieving people."
فَـَٔاتَىٰهُمُ So gave them faātāhumu Allah l-lahu reward thawāba (in) the world l-dun'yā and good waḥus'na reward thawābi (in) the Hereafter l-ākhirati And Allah wal-lahu loves yuḥibbu the good-doers l-muḥ'sinīna
So Allāh gave them the reward of this world and the good reward of the Hereafter. And Allāh loves the doers of good.
