وَلِلَّهِ And to Allah (belongs) walillahi whatever mā (is) in fī the heavens l-samāwāti and whatever wamā (is) in fī the earth l-arḍi And to wa-ilā Allah l-lahi will be returned tur'jaʿu the matters l-umūru
To Allāh belongs whatever is in the heavens and whatever is on the earth. And to Allāh will [all] matters be returned.
كُنتُمْ You are kuntum (the) best khayra (of) people ummatin raised ukh'rijat for the mankind lilnnāsi enjoining tamurūna the right bil-maʿrūfi and forbidding watanhawna [from] ʿani the wrong l-munkari and believing watu'minūna in Allah bil-lahi And if walaw believed āmana (the) People ahlu (of) the Book l-kitābi surely would have been lakāna good khayran for them lahum Among them min'humu (are) [the] believers l-mu'minūna but most of them wa-aktharuhumu (are) defiantly disobedient l-fāsiqūna
You are the best nation produced [as an example] for mankind. You enjoin what is right and forbid what is wrong and believe in Allāh. If only the People of the Scripture had believed, it would have been better for them. Among them are believers, but most of them are defiantly disobedient.
لَن Never lan will they harm you yaḍurrūkum except illā a hurt adhan And if wa-in they fight you yuqātilūkum they will turn (towards) you yuwallūkumu the backs l-adbāra then thumma not lā they will be helped yunṣarūna
They will not harm you except for [some] annoyance. And if they fight you, they will show you their backs [i.e., retreat]; then they will not be aided.
ضُرِبَتْ Struck ḍuribat on them ʿalayhimu the humiliation l-dhilatu wherever ayna that mā they are found thuqifū except illā with a rope biḥablin from mina Allah l-lahi and a rope waḥablin from mina the people l-nāsi And they incurred wabāū wrath bighaḍabin from mina Allah l-lahi and struck waḍuribat on them ʿalayhimu the poverty l-maskanatu That dhālika (is) because bi-annahum they used to kānū disbelieve yakfurūna in (the) Verses biāyāti (of) Allah l-lahi and they killed wayaqtulūna the Prophets l-anbiyāa without bighayri right ḥaqqin That dhālika (is) because bimā they disobeyed ʿaṣaw and they used to wakānū transgress yaʿtadūna
They have been put under humiliation [by Allāh] wherever they are overtaken, except for a rope [i.e., covenant] from Allāh and a rope [i.e., treaty] from the people [i.e., the Muslims].1 And they have drawn upon themselves anger from Allāh and have been put under destitution. That is because they disbelieved in [i.e., rejected] the verses of Allāh and killed the prophets without right. That is because they disobeyed and [habitually] transgressed.
۞ لَيْسُوا۟ They are not laysū (the) same sawāan among min (the) People ahli (of) the Book l-kitābi (is) a community ummatun standing qāimatun (and) reciting yatlūna (the) Verses āyāti (of) Allah l-lahi (in the) hours ānāa (of) the night al-layli and they wahum prostrate yasjudūna
They are not [all] the same; among the People of the Scripture is a community1 standing [in obedience], reciting the verses of Allāh during periods of the night and prostrating [in prayer].
يُؤْمِنُونَ They believe yu'minūna in Allah bil-lahi and the Day wal-yawmi the Last l-ākhiri and they enjoin wayamurūna [with] the right bil-maʿrūfi and forbid wayanhawna [from] ʿani the wrong l-munkari and they hasten wayusāriʿūna in fī the good deeds l-khayrāti And those wa-ulāika (are) from mina the righteous l-ṣāliḥīna
They believe in Allāh and the Last Day, and they enjoin what is right and forbid what is wrong and hasten to good deeds. And those are among the righteous.
وَمَا And whatever wamā they do yafʿalū of min a good khayrin then never falan will they be denied it yuk'farūhu And Allah wal-lahu (is) All-Knowing ʿalīmun of the God-fearing bil-mutaqīna
And whatever good they do - never will it be denied them. And Allāh is Knowing of the righteous.
