لَن Never lan will you attain tanālū [the] righteousness l-bira until ḥattā you spend tunfiqū from what mimmā you love tuḥibbūna And whatever wamā you spend tunfiqū of min a thing shayin then indeed fa-inna Allah l-laha of it bihi (is) All-Knowing ʿalīmun
Never will you attain the good [reward]1 until you spend [in the way of Allāh] from that which you love. And whatever you spend - indeed, Allāh is Knowing of it.
۞ كُلُّ All kullu [the] food l-ṭaʿāmi was kāna lawful ḥillan for (the) Children libanī (of) Israel is'rāīla except illā what mā made unlawful ḥarrama Israel is'rāīlu upon ʿalā himself nafsihi from min before qabli [that] an (was) revealed tunazzala the Taurat l-tawrātu Say qul So bring fatū the Taurat bil-tawrāti and recite it fa-it'lūhā if in you are kuntum truthful ṣādiqīna
All food was lawful to the Children of Israel except what Israel [i.e., Jacob] had made unlawful to himself before the Torah was revealed. Say, [O Muḥammad], "So bring the Torah and recite it, if you should be truthful."
فَمَنِ Then whoever famani fabricates if'tarā about ʿalā Allah l-lahi [the] lie l-kadhiba from min after baʿdi that dhālika then those fa-ulāika they humu (are) the wrongdoers l-ẓālimūna
And whoever invents about Allāh untruth after that - then those are [truly] the wrongdoers.
قُلْ Say qul (has) spoken the truth ṣadaqa Allah l-lahu then follow fa-ittabiʿū (the) religion millata (of) Ibrahim ib'rāhīma (the) upright ḥanīfan and not wamā he was kāna of mina the polytheists l-mush'rikīna
Say, "Allāh has told the truth. So follow the religion of Abraham, inclining toward truth; and he was not of the polytheists."1
إِنَّ Indeed inna (the) First awwala House baytin set up wuḍiʿa for the mankind lilnnāsi (is) the one which lalladhī (is) at Bakkah bibakkata blessed mubārakan and a guidance wahudan for the worlds lil'ʿālamīna
Indeed, the first House [of worship] established for mankind was that at Bakkah [i.e., Makkah] - blessed and a guidance for the worlds.
فِيهِ In it fīhi (are) signs āyātun clear bayyinātun standing place maqāmu (of) Ibrahim ib'rāhīma and whoever waman enters it dakhalahu is kāna safe āminan And (due) to Allah walillahi upon ʿalā the mankind l-nāsi (is) pilgrimage ḥijju (of) the House l-bayti (for one) who mani is able is'taṭāʿa to [it] ilayhi (find) a way sabīlan And whoever waman disbelieved kafara then indeed fa-inna Allah l-laha (is) free from need ghaniyyun of ʿani the universe l-ʿālamīna
In it are clear signs [such as] the standing place of Abraham. And whoever enters it [i.e., the Ḥaram] shall be safe. And [due] to Allāh from the people is a pilgrimage to the House - for whoever is able to find thereto a way. But whoever disbelieves [i.e., refuses] - then indeed, Allāh is free from need of the worlds.1
قُلْ Say qul O People yāahla (of) the Book l-kitābi Why lima (do) you disbelieve takfurūna in (the) Verses biāyāti (of) Allah l-lahi while Allah wal-lahu (is) a Witness shahīdun over ʿalā what mā you do taʿmalūna
Say, "O People of the Scripture, why do you disbelieve in the verses of Allāh while Allāh is Witness over what you do?"
قُلْ Say qul O People yāahla (of) the Book l-kitābi Why lima (do) you hinder taṣuddūna from ʿan (the) way sabīli (of) Allah l-lahi (those) who man believe[d] āmana seeking (to make) it tabghūnahā (seem) crooked ʿiwajan while you wa-antum (are) witnesses shuhadāu And not wamā Allah l-lahu (is) unaware bighāfilin of what ʿammā you do taʿmalūna
Say, "O People of the Scripture, why do you avert from the way of Allāh those who believe, seeking to make it [seem] deviant, while you are witnesses [to the truth]? And Allāh is not unaware of what you do."
يَـٰٓأَيُّهَا O you yāayyuhā who alladhīna believe[d] āmanū If in you obey tuṭīʿū a group farīqan from mina those who alladhīna were given ūtū the Book l-kitāba they will turn you back yaruddūkum after baʿda your belief īmānikum (as) disbelievers kāfirīna
O you who have believed, if you obey a party of those who were given the Scripture, they would turn you back, after your belief, [to being] unbelievers.
