وَإِنَّ And indeed wa-inna among them min'hum surely (is) a group lafarīqan they distort yalwūna their tongues alsinatahum in (reciting) the Book bil-kitābi so that you may think it litaḥsabūhu (is) from mina the Book l-kitābi and not wamā it huwa (is) from mina the Book l-kitābi And they say wayaqūlūna It huwa (is) min from ʿindi Allah l-lahi But not wamā it huwa (is) min from ʿindi Allah l-lahi And they say wayaqūlūna about ʿalā Allah l-lahi the lie l-kadhiba while they wahum know yaʿlamūna
And indeed, there is among them a party who alter the Scripture with their tongues so you may think it is from the Scripture, but it is not from the Scripture. And they say, "This is from Allāh," but it is not from Allāh. And they speak untruth about Allāh while they know.
مَا Not mā is kāna for a human libasharin that an gives him yu'tiyahu Allah l-lahu the Book l-kitāba and the wisdom wal-ḥuk'ma and the Prophethood wal-nubuwata then thumma he says yaqūla to the people lilnnāsi Be kūnū worshippers ʿibādan of me lī from min besides dūni Allah l-lahi but (would say) walākin Be kūnū worshippers of the Lord rabbāniyyīna because bimā you have been kuntum teaching tuʿallimūna the Book l-kitāba and because wabimā you have been kuntum studying (it) tadrusūna
It is not for a human [prophet]1 that Allāh should give him the Scripture2 and authority and prophethood and then he would say to the people, "Be servants to me rather than Allāh," but [instead, he would say], "Be pious scholars of the Lord because of what you have taught of the Scripture and because of what you have studied."
وَلَا And not walā he will order you yamurakum that an you take tattakhidhū the Angels l-malāikata and the Prophets wal-nabiyīna (as) lords arbāban Would he order you ayamurukum to [the] disbelief bil-kuf'ri after baʿda [when] idh you (have become) antum Muslims mus'limūna
Nor could he order you to take the angels and prophets as lords. Would he order you to disbelief after you had been Muslims?
وَإِذْ And when wa-idh took akhadha Allah l-lahu covenant mīthāqa (of) the Prophets l-nabiyīna Certainly, whatever lamā I (have) given you ātaytukum of min (the) Book kitābin and wisdom waḥik'matin then thumma comes to you jāakum a Messenger rasūlun confirming muṣaddiqun that which limā (is) with you maʿakum you must believe latu'minunna in him bihi and you must help him walatanṣurunnahu He said qāla Do you affirm a-aqrartum and take wa-akhadhtum on ʿalā that (condition) dhālikum My Covenant iṣ'rī They said qālū We affirm aqrarnā He said qāla Then bear witness fa-ish'hadū and I (am) wa-anā with you maʿakum among mina the witnesses l-shāhidīna
And [recall, O People of the Scripture], when Allāh took the covenant of the prophets, [saying], "Whatever I give you of the Scripture and wisdom and then there comes to you a messenger confirming what is with you, you [must] believe in him and support him." [Allāh] said, "Have you acknowledged and taken upon that My commitment?"1 They said, "We have acknowledged it." He said, "Then bear witness, and I am with you among the witnesses."
فَمَن Then whoever faman turns away tawallā after baʿda that dhālika then those fa-ulāika they humu (are) the defiantly disobedient l-fāsiqūna
And whoever turned away after that - they were the defiantly disobedient.
أَفَغَيْرَ So is (it) other than afaghayra (the) religion dīni (of) Allah l-lahi they seek yabghūna While to Him walahu (have) submitted aslama whatever man (is) in fī the heavens l-samāwāti and the earth wal-arḍi willingly ṭawʿan or unwillingly wakarhan and towards Him wa-ilayhi they will be returned yur'jaʿūna
So is it other than the religion of Allāh they desire, while to Him have submitted [all] those within the heavens and earth, willingly or by compulsion, and to Him they will be returned?
