يَـٰٓأَهْلَ O People yāahla (of) the Book l-kitābi Why lima do you mix talbisūna the truth l-ḥaqa with the falsehood bil-bāṭili and conceal wataktumūna the truth l-ḥaqa while you wa-antum know taʿlamūna
O People of the Scripture, why do you mix [i.e., confuse] the truth with falsehood and conceal the truth while you know [it]?
وَقَالَت And said waqālat a group ṭāifatun of min (the) People ahli (of) the Book l-kitābi Believe āminū in what bi-alladhī was revealed unzila on ʿalā those who alladhīna believe[d] āmanū (at the) beginning wajha (of) the day l-nahāri and reject wa-uk'furū (at) its end ākhirahu perhaps they may laʿallahum return yarjiʿūna
And a faction of the People of the Scripture say [to each other], "Believe in that which was revealed to the believers at the beginning of the day and reject it at its end that perhaps they will return [i.e., abandon their religion],
وَلَا And (do) not walā believe tu'minū except illā (the one) who liman follows tabiʿa your religion dīnakum Say qul Indeed inna the (true) guidance l-hudā (is the) Guidance hudā (of) Allah l-lahi lest an is given yu'tā (to) one aḥadun (the) like mith'la (of) what mā was given to you ūtītum or aw they may argue with you yuḥājjūkum near ʿinda your Lord rabbikum Say qul Indeed inna the Bounty l-faḍla (is) in the Hand biyadi (of) Allah l-lahi He gives it yu'tīhi (to) whom man He wills yashāu and Allah wal-lahu (is) All-Encompassing wāsiʿun All-Knowing ʿalīmun
And do not trust except those who follow your religion." Say, "Indeed, the [true] guidance is the guidance of Allāh. [Do you fear] lest someone be given [knowledge] like you were given or that they would [thereby] argue with you before your Lord?" Say, "Indeed, [all] bounty is in the hand1 of Allāh - He grants it to whom He wills. And Allāh is all-Encompassing and Wise."
يَخْتَصُّ He chooses yakhtaṣṣu for His Mercy biraḥmatihi whom man He wills yashāu And Allah wal-lahu (is) the Possessor dhū (of) Bounty l-faḍli [the] great l-ʿaẓīmi
He selects for His mercy whom He wills. And Allāh is the possessor of great bounty.
۞ وَمِنْ And from wamin (the) People ahli (of) the Book l-kitābi (is he) who man if in you entrust him tamanhu with a great amount of wealth biqinṭārin he will return it yu-addihi to you ilayka And from them wamin'hum (is he) who man if in you entrust him tamanhu with a single coin bidīnārin not lā he will return it yu-addihi to you ilayka except illā that mā you keep constantly dum'ta over him ʿalayhi standing qāiman That dhālika (is) because they bi-annahum said qālū Not laysa on us ʿalaynā concerning fī the unlettered people l-umiyīna any [way] (accountability) sabīlun And they say wayaqūlūna about ʿalā Allah l-lahi the lie l-kadhiba while they wahum know yaʿlamūna
And among the People of the Scripture is he who, if you entrust him with a great amount [of wealth], he will return it to you. And among them is he who, if you entrust him with a [single] coin, he will not return it to you unless you are constantly standing over him [demanding it]. That is because they say, "There is no blame upon us concerning the unlearned."1 And they speak untruth about Allāh while they know [it].
بَلَىٰ Nay balā whoever man fulfills awfā his covenant biʿahdihi and fears (Allah) wa-ittaqā then indeed fa-inna Allah l-laha loves yuḥibbu those who fear (Him) l-mutaqīna
But yes, whoever fulfills his commitment and fears Allāh - then indeed, Allāh loves those who fear Him.
إِنَّ Indeed inna those who alladhīna exchange yashtarūna (the) Covenant biʿahdi (of) Allah l-lahi and their oaths wa-aymānihim (for) a price thamanan little qalīlan those ulāika no lā share khalāqa for them lahum in fī the Hereafter l-ākhirati and not walā will speak to them yukallimuhumu Allah l-lahu and not walā look yanẓuru at them ilayhim (on the) Day yawma (of) the Resurrection l-qiyāmati and not walā purify them yuzakkīhim and for them walahum (is) a punishment ʿadhābun painful alīmun
Indeed, those who exchange the covenant of Allāh and their [own] oaths for a small price will have no share in the Hereafter, and Allāh will not speak to them or look at them on the Day of Resurrection, nor will He purify them; and they will have a painful punishment.
