Ash-Shams
The Sun
﷽
الشمس
وَٱلشَّمْسِ By the sun wal-shamsi and its brightness waḍuḥāhā
By the sun and its brightness
وَٱلْقَمَرِ And the moon wal-qamari when idhā it follows it talāhā
And [by] the moon when it follows it
وَٱلنَّهَارِ And the day wal-nahāri when idhā it displays it jallāhā
And [by] the day when it displays it1
وَٱلَّيْلِ And the night wa-al-layli when idhā it covers it yaghshāhā
And [by] the night when it covers [i.e., conceals] it
وَٱلسَّمَآءِ And the heaven wal-samāi and (He) Who wamā constructed it banāhā
And [by] the sky and He who constructed it
وَٱلْأَرْضِ And the earth wal-arḍi and by (He) Who wamā spread it ṭaḥāhā
And [by] the earth and He who spread it
وَنَفْسٍۢ And (the) soul wanafsin and (He) Who wamā proportioned it sawwāhā
And [by] the soul and He who proportioned it1
فَأَلْهَمَهَا And He inspired it fa-alhamahā (to distinguish) its wickedness fujūrahā and its righteousness wataqwāhā
And inspired it [with discernment of] its wickedness and its righteousness,
قَدْ Indeed qad he succeeds aflaḥa who man purifies it zakkāhā
He has succeeded who purifies it,
وَقَدْ And indeed waqad he fails khāba who man buries it dassāhā
And he has failed who instills it [with corruption].
كَذَّبَتْ Denied kadhabat Thamud thamūdu by their transgression biṭaghwāhā
Thamūd denied [their prophet] by reason of their transgression,
إِذِ When idhi (was) sent forth inbaʿatha (the) most wicked of them ashqāhā
When the most wretched of them was sent forth.1
فَقَالَ But said faqāla to them lahum (the) Messenger rasūlu (of) Allah l-lahi (It is the) she-camel nāqata (of) Allah l-lahi and her drink wasuq'yāhā
And the messenger of Allāh [i.e., Ṣāliḥ] said to them, "[Do not harm] the she-camel of Allāh or [prevent her from] her drink."
فَكَذَّبُوهُ But they denied him fakadhabūhu and they hamstrung her faʿaqarūhā So destroyed fadamdama them ʿalayhim their Lord rabbuhum for their sin bidhanbihim and leveled them fasawwāhā
But they denied him and hamstrung1 her. So their Lord brought down upon them destruction for their sin and made it equal [upon all of them].
وَلَا And not walā He fears yakhāfu its consequences ʿuq'bāhā
And He does not fear the consequence thereof.1
Al-Layl
The Night
﷽
الليل
وَٱلَّيْلِ By the night wa-al-layli when idhā it covers yaghshā
By the night when it covers1
وَٱلنَّهَارِ And the day wal-nahāri when idhā it shines in brightness tajallā
And [by] the day when it appears
وَمَا And He Who wamā created khalaqa the male l-dhakara and the female wal-unthā
And [by] He who created the male and female,
إِنَّ Indeed inna your efforts saʿyakum (are) surely diverse lashattā
Indeed, your efforts are diverse.
فَأَمَّا Then as for fa-ammā (him) who man gives aʿṭā and fears wa-ittaqā
As for he who gives and fears Allāh
وَصَدَّقَ And believes waṣaddaqa in the best bil-ḥus'nā
And believes in the best [reward],
فَسَنُيَسِّرُهُۥ Then We will ease him fasanuyassiruhu towards [the] ease lil'yus'rā
We will ease him toward ease.
وَأَمَّا But as for wa-ammā (him) who man withholds bakhila and considers himself free from need wa-is'taghnā
But as for he who withholds and considers himself free of need
وَكَذَّبَ And denies wakadhaba the best bil-ḥus'nā
And denies the best [reward],
فَسَنُيَسِّرُهُۥ Then We will ease him fasanuyassiruhu towards [the] difficulty lil'ʿus'rā
We will ease him toward difficulty.
وَمَا And not wamā will avail yugh'nī him ʿanhu his wealth māluhu when idhā he falls taraddā
And what will his wealth avail him when he falls?1
إِنَّ Indeed inna upon Us ʿalaynā (is) the guidance lalhudā
Indeed, [incumbent] upon Us is guidance.
وَإِنَّ And indeed wa-inna for Us lanā (is) the Hereafter lalākhirata and the first (life) wal-ūlā
And indeed, to us belongs the Hereafter and the first [life].
فَأَنذَرْتُكُمْ So I warn you fa-andhartukum (of) a Fire nāran blazing talaẓẓā
So I have warned you of a Fire which is blazing.
