يَقُولُ He will say yaqūlu O I wish yālaytanī I had sent forth qaddamtu for my life liḥayātī
He will say, "Oh, I wish I had sent ahead [some good] for my life."1
فَيَوْمَئِذٍۢ So that Day fayawma-idhin not lā will punish yuʿadhibu (as) His punishment ʿadhābahu anyone aḥadun
So on that Day, none will punish [as severely] as His punishment,
وَلَا And not walā will bind yūthiqu (as) His binding wathāqahu anyone aḥadun
And none will bind [as severely] as His binding [of the evildoers].
يَـٰٓأَيَّتُهَا O yāayyatuhā soul l-nafsu who is satisfied l-muṭ'ma-inatu
[To the righteous it will be said], "O reassured soul,
ٱرْجِعِىٓ Return ir'jiʿī to ilā your Lord rabbiki well pleased rāḍiyatan and pleasing marḍiyyatan
Return to your Lord, well-pleased and pleasing [to Him],
فَٱدْخُلِى So enter fa-ud'khulī among fī My slaves ʿibādī
And enter among My [righteous] servants
Al-Balad
The City
﷽
البلد
لَآ Nay lā I swear uq'simu by this bihādhā city l-baladi
I swear by this city [i.e., Makkah]
وَأَنتَ And you wa-anta (are) free (to dwell) ḥillun in this bihādhā city l-baladi
And you, [O Muḥammad], are free of restriction in this city
وَوَالِدٍۢ And the begetter wawālidin and what wamā he begot walada
And [by] the father1 and that which was born [of him],
لَقَدْ Certainly laqad We have created khalaqnā man l-insāna (to be) in fī hardship kabadin
We have certainly created man into hardship.
أَيَحْسَبُ Does he think ayaḥsabu that an not lan has power yaqdira over him ʿalayhi anyone aḥadun
Does he think that never will anyone overcome him?
يَقُولُ He will say yaqūlu I have squandered ahlaktu wealth mālan abundant lubadan
He says, "I have spent wealth in abundance."
أَيَحْسَبُ Does he think ayaḥsabu that an not lam sees him yarahu anyone aḥadun
Does he think that no one has seen him?
أَلَمْ Have not alam We made najʿal for him lahu two eyes ʿaynayni
Have We not made for him two eyes?
وَلِسَانًۭا And a tongue walisānan and two lips washafatayni
And a tongue and two lips?
وَهَدَيْنَـٰهُ And shown him wahadaynāhu the two ways l-najdayni
And have shown him the two ways?1
فَلَا But not falā he has attempted iq'taḥama the steep path l-ʿaqabata
But he has not broken through the difficult pass.1
وَمَآ And what wamā can make you know adrāka what mā the steep path (is) l-ʿaqabatu
And what can make you know what is [breaking through] the difficult pass?
أَوْ Or aw feeding iṭ'ʿāmun in fī a day yawmin of dhī severe hunger masghabatin
Or feeding on a day of severe hunger
يَتِيمًۭا An orphan yatīman of dhā near relationship maqrabatin
An orphan of near relationship
أَوْ Or aw a needy person mis'kīnan in dhā misery matrabatin
Or a needy person in misery
ثُمَّ Then thumma he is kāna of mina those who alladhīna believe āmanū and enjoin (each other) watawāṣaw to patience bil-ṣabri and enjoin (each other) watawāṣaw to compassion bil-marḥamati
And then being among those who believed and advised one another to patience and advised one another to compassion.
أُو۟لَـٰٓئِكَ Those ulāika (are the) companions aṣḥābu (of) the right (hand) l-maymanati
Those are the companions of the right.1
وَٱلَّذِينَ But those who wa-alladhīna disbelieve kafarū in Our Verses biāyātinā they hum (are the) companions aṣḥābu (of) the left (hand) l-mashamati
But they who disbelieved in Our signs - those are the companions of the left.1
عَلَيْهِمْ Over them ʿalayhim (will be the) Fire nārun closed in mu'ṣadatun
Over them will be fire closed in.1
