The Dawn
﷽
الفجر
وَٱلشَّفْعِ And the even wal-shafʿi and the odd wal-watri
And [by] the even [number] and the odd
وَٱلَّيْلِ And the night wa-al-layli when idhā it passes yasri
And [by] the night when it passes,
هَلْ Is hal in fī that dhālika (not) an oath qasamun for those lidhī who understand ḥij'rin
Is there [not] in [all] that an oath [sufficient] for one of perception?1
أَلَمْ Did not alam you see tara how kayfa dealt faʿala your Lord rabbuka with Aad biʿādin
Have you not considered how your Lord dealt with ʿAad -
إِرَمَ Iram irama possessors (of) dhāti lofty pillars l-ʿimādi
[With] Iram1 - who had lofty pillars,2
ٱلَّتِى Which allatī not lam had been created yukh'laq like them mith'luhā in fī the cities l-bilādi
The likes of whom had never been created in the land?
وَثَمُودَ And Thamud wathamūda who alladhīna carved out jābū the rocks l-ṣakhra in the valley bil-wādi
And [with] Thamūd, who carved out the rocks in the valley?
وَفِرْعَوْنَ And Firaun wafir'ʿawna owner of dhī stakes l-awtādi
And [with] Pharaoh, owner of the stakes?1
ٱلَّذِينَ Who alladhīna transgressed ṭaghaw in fī the lands l-bilādi
[All of] whom oppressed within the lands
فَأَكْثَرُوا۟ And (made) much fa-aktharū therein fīhā corruption l-fasāda
And increased therein the corruption.
فَصَبَّ So poured faṣabba on them ʿalayhim your Lord rabbuka scourge sawṭa (of) punishment ʿadhābin
So your Lord poured upon them a scourge of punishment.
إِنَّ Indeed inna your Lord rabbaka (is) surely Ever Watchful labil-mir'ṣādi
Indeed, your Lord is in observation.
فَأَمَّا And as for fa-ammā man l-insānu when idhā does mā try him ib'talāhu his Lord rabbuhu and is generous to him fa-akramahu and favors him wanaʿʿamahu he says fayaqūlu My Lord rabbī has honored me akramani
And as for man, when his Lord tries him and [thus] is generous to him and favors him, he says, "My Lord has honored me."1
وَأَمَّآ But wa-ammā when idhā does mā He try him ib'talāhu and restricts faqadara for him ʿalayhi his provision riz'qahu then he says fayaqūlu My Lord rabbī (has) humiliated me ahānani
But when He tries him and restricts his provision, he says, "My Lord has humiliated me."
كَلَّا ۖ Nay kallā But bal not lā you honor tuk'rimūna the orphan l-yatīma
No!1 But you do not honor the orphan
وَلَا And not walā you feel the urge taḥāḍḍūna to ʿalā feed ṭaʿāmi the poor l-mis'kīni
And you do not encourage one another to feed the poor.
وَتَأْكُلُونَ And you consume watakulūna the inheritance l-turātha devouring aklan altogether lamman
And you consume inheritance, devouring [it] altogether,1
وَتُحِبُّونَ And you love watuḥibbūna wealth l-māla (with) love ḥubban immense jamman
And you love wealth with immense love.
كَلَّآ Nay kallā When idhā is leveled dukkati the earth l-arḍu pounded dakkan (and) crushed dakkan
No! When the earth has been leveled - pounded and crushed
وَجَآءَ And comes wajāa your Lord rabbuka and the Angels wal-malaku rank ṣaffan (upon) rank ṣaffan
And your Lord has come1 and the angels, rank upon rank,
وَجِا۟ىٓءَ And is brought wajīa that Day yawma-idhin Hell bijahannama That Day yawma-idhin will remember yatadhakkaru man l-insānu but how wa-annā (will be) for him lahu the remembrance l-dhik'rā
And brought [within view], that Day, is Hell - that Day, man will remember, but how [i.e., what good] to him will be the remembrance?
