بَلْ Nay bal You prefer tu'thirūna the life l-ḥayata (of) the world l-dun'yā
But you prefer the worldly life,
وَٱلْـَٔاخِرَةُ While the Hereafter wal-ākhiratu (is) better khayrun and everlasting wa-abqā
While the Hereafter is better and more enduring.
إِنَّ Indeed inna this hādhā surely (is) in lafī the Scriptures l-ṣuḥufi [the] former l-ūlā
Indeed, this is in the former scriptures,
صُحُفِ (The) Scriptures ṣuḥufi (of) Ibrahim ib'rāhīma and Musa wamūsā
The scriptures of Abraham and Moses.
Al-Ghāshiyah
The Overwhelming
﷽
الغاشية
هَلْ Has hal (there) come to you atāka (the) news ḥadīthu (of) the Overwhelming l-ghāshiyati
Has there reached you the report of the Overwhelming [event]?
وُجُوهٌۭ Faces wujūhun that Day yawma-idhin (will be) humbled khāshiʿatun
[Some] faces, that Day, will be humbled,
تَصْلَىٰ They will burn taṣlā (in) a Fire nāran intensely hot ḥāmiyatan
They will [enter to] burn in an intensely hot Fire.
تُسْقَىٰ They will be given to drink tus'qā from min a spring ʿaynin boiling āniyatin
They will be given drink from a boiling spring.
لَّيْسَ Not is laysa for them lahum food ṭaʿāmun except illā from min a bitter thorny plant ḍarīʿin
For them there will be no food except from a poisonous, thorny plant
لَّا Not lā it nourishes yus'minu and not walā it avails yugh'nī from min hunger jūʿin
Which neither nourishes nor avails against hunger.
وُجُوهٌۭ Faces wujūhun that Day yawma-idhin (will be) joyful nāʿimatun
[Other] faces, that Day, will show pleasure.
لِّسَعْيِهَا With their effort lisaʿyihā satisfied rāḍiyatun
With their effort [they are] satisfied
لَّا Not lā they will hear tasmaʿu therein fīhā vain talk lāghiyatan
Wherein they will hear no unsuitable speech.1
فِيهَا Therein fīhā (will be) a spring ʿaynun flowing jāriyatun
Within it is a flowing spring.
فِيهَا Therein fīhā (will be) thrones sururun raised high marfūʿatun
Within it are couches raised high
وَأَكْوَابٌۭ And cups wa-akwābun put in place mawḍūʿatun
And cups put in place
وَزَرَابِىُّ And carpets wazarābiyyu spread out mabthūthatun
And carpets spread around.
أَفَلَا Then do not afalā they look yanẓurūna towards ilā the camels l-ibili how kayfa they are created khuliqat
Then do they not look at the camels - how they are created?
وَإِلَى And towards wa-ilā the sky l-samāi how kayfa it is raised rufiʿat
And at the sky - how it is raised?
وَإِلَى And towards wa-ilā the mountains l-jibāli how kayfa they are fixed nuṣibat
And at the mountains - how they are erected?
وَإِلَى And towards wa-ilā the earth l-arḍi how kayfa it is spread out suṭiḥat
And at the earth - how it is spread out?
فَذَكِّرْ So remind fadhakkir only innamā you anta (are) a reminder mudhakkirun
So remind, [O Muḥammad]; you are only a reminder.
لَّسْتَ You are not lasta over them ʿalayhim a controller bimuṣayṭirin
You are not over them a controller.
إِلَّا But illā whoever man turns away tawallā and disbelieves wakafara
However, he who turns away and disbelieves
فَيُعَذِّبُهُ Then will punish him fayuʿadhibuhu Allah l-lahu (with) the punishment l-ʿadhāba greatest l-akbara
Then Allāh will punish him with the greatest punishment.
إِنَّ Indeed inna to Us ilaynā (will be) their return iyābahum
Indeed, to Us is their return.
ثُمَّ Then thumma indeed inna upon Us ʿalaynā (is) their account ḥisābahum
Then indeed, upon Us is their account.
