The Nightcommer

الطارق

وَٱلسَّمَآءِ

By the sky

wal-samāi

وَٱلطَّارِقِ

and the night comer

wal-ṭāriqi

١

By the sky and the night comer

— Saheeh International

وَمَآ

And what

wamā

أَدْرَىٰكَ

can make you know

adrāka

مَا

what

ٱلطَّارِقُ

the night comer (is)

l-ṭāriqu

٢

And what can make you know what is the night comer?

— Saheeh International

ٱلنَّجْمُ

(It is) the star

al-najmu

ٱلثَّاقِبُ

the piercing

l-thāqibu

٣

It is the piercing star1

— Saheeh International

إِن

Not

in

كُلُّ

(is) every

kullu

نَفْسٍۢ

soul

nafsin

لَّمَّا

but

lammā

عَلَيْهَا

over it

ʿalayhā

حَافِظٌۭ

(is) a protector

ḥāfiẓun

٤

There is no soul but that it has over it a protector.

— Saheeh International

فَلْيَنظُرِ

So let see

falyanẓuri

ٱلْإِنسَـٰنُ

man

l-insānu

مِمَّ

from what

mimma

خُلِقَ

he is created

khuliqa

٥

So let man observe from what he was created.

— Saheeh International

خُلِقَ

He is created

khuliqa

مِن

from

min

مَّآءٍۢ

a water

māin

دَافِقٍۢ

ejected

dāfiqin

٦

He was created from a fluid, ejected,

— Saheeh International

يَخْرُجُ

Coming forth

yakhruju

مِنۢ

from

min

بَيْنِ

between

bayni

ٱلصُّلْبِ

the backbone

l-ṣul'bi

وَٱلتَّرَآئِبِ

and the ribs

wal-tarāibi

٧

Emerging from between the backbone and the ribs.

— Saheeh International

إِنَّهُۥ

Indeed, He

innahu

عَلَىٰ

to

ʿalā

رَجْعِهِۦ

return him

rajʿihi

لَقَادِرٌۭ

(is) Able

laqādirun

٨

Indeed, He [i.e., Allāh], to return him [to life], is Able.

— Saheeh International

يَوْمَ

(The) Day

yawma

تُبْلَى

will be tested

tub'lā

ٱلسَّرَآئِرُ

the secrets

l-sarāiru

٩

The Day when secrets will be put on trial,1

— Saheeh International

فَمَا

Then not

famā

لَهُۥ

(is) for him

lahu

مِن

any

min

قُوَّةٍۢ

power

quwwatin

وَلَا

and not

walā

نَاصِرٍۢ

any helper

nāṣirin

١٠

Then he [i.e., man] will have no power or any helper.

— Saheeh International

وَٱلسَّمَآءِ

By the sky

wal-samāi

ذَاتِ

which

dhāti

ٱلرَّجْعِ

returns

l-rajʿi

١١

By the sky which sends back1

— Saheeh International

وَٱلْأَرْضِ

And the earth

wal-arḍi

ذَاتِ

which

dhāti

ٱلصَّدْعِ

cracks open

l-ṣadʿi

١٢

And [by] the earth which splits,1

— Saheeh International

إِنَّهُۥ

Indeed, it

innahu

لَقَوْلٌۭ

(is) surely a Word

laqawlun

فَصْلٌۭ

decisive

faṣlun

١٣

Indeed, it [i.e., the Qur’ān] is a decisive statement,

— Saheeh International

وَمَا

And not

wamā

هُوَ

it

huwa

بِٱلْهَزْلِ

(is) for amusement

bil-hazli

١٤

And it is not amusement.

— Saheeh International

إِنَّهُمْ

Indeed, they

innahum

يَكِيدُونَ

are plotting

yakīdūna

كَيْدًۭا

a plot

kaydan

١٥

Indeed, they are planning a plan,

— Saheeh International

وَأَكِيدُ

But I am planning

wa-akīdu

كَيْدًۭا

a plan

kaydan

١٦

But I am planning a plan.

— Saheeh International

فَمَهِّلِ

So give respite

famahhili

ٱلْكَـٰفِرِينَ

(to) the disbelievers

l-kāfirīna

أَمْهِلْهُمْ

Give respite to them

amhil'hum

رُوَيْدًۢا

little

ruwaydan

١٧

So allow time for the disbelievers. Leave them awhile.1

— Saheeh International

Al-'A`lá

The Most High

الأعلى

سَبِّحِ

Glorify

sabbiḥi

ٱسْمَ

(the) name

is'ma

رَبِّكَ

(of) your Lord

rabbika

ٱلْأَعْلَى

the Most High

l-aʿlā

١

Exalt the name of your Lord, the Most High,

— Saheeh International

ٱلَّذِى

The One Who

alladhī

خَلَقَ

created

khalaqa

فَسَوَّىٰ

then proportioned

fasawwā

٢

Who created and proportioned

— Saheeh International

وَٱلَّذِى

And the One Who

wa-alladhī

قَدَّرَ

measured

qaddara

فَهَدَىٰ

then guided

fahadā

٣

And who destined and [then] guided

— Saheeh International

وَٱلَّذِىٓ

And the One Who

wa-alladhī

أَخْرَجَ

brings forth

akhraja

ٱلْمَرْعَىٰ

the pasture

l-marʿā

٤

And who brings out the pasture

— Saheeh International

فَجَعَلَهُۥ

And then makes it

fajaʿalahu

غُثَآءً

stubble

ghuthāan

أَحْوَىٰ

dark

aḥwā

٥

And [then] makes it black stubble.

— Saheeh International

سَنُقْرِئُكَ

We will make you recite

sanuq'ri-uka

فَلَا

so not

falā

تَنسَىٰٓ

you will forget

tansā

٦

We will make you recite, [O Muḥammad], and you will not forget,

— Saheeh International

إِلَّا

Except

illā

مَا

what

شَآءَ

wills

shāa

ٱللَّهُ ۚ

Allah

l-lahu

إِنَّهُۥ

Indeed, He

innahu

يَعْلَمُ

knows

yaʿlamu

ٱلْجَهْرَ

the manifest

l-jahra

وَمَا

and what

wamā

يَخْفَىٰ

is hidden

yakhfā

٧

Except what Allāh should will. Indeed, He knows what is declared and what is hidden.

— Saheeh International

وَنُيَسِّرُكَ

And We will ease you

wanuyassiruka

لِلْيُسْرَىٰ

to the ease

lil'yus'rā

٨

And We will ease you toward ease.1

— Saheeh International

فَذَكِّرْ

So remind

fadhakkir

إِن

if

in

نَّفَعَتِ

benefits

nafaʿati

ٱلذِّكْرَىٰ

the reminder

l-dhik'rā

٩

So remind, if the reminder should benefit;1

— Saheeh International

سَيَذَّكَّرُ

He will pay heed

sayadhakkaru

مَن

(one) who

man

يَخْشَىٰ

fears (Allah)

yakhshā

١٠

He who fears [Allāh] will be reminded.

— Saheeh International

وَيَتَجَنَّبُهَا

And will avoid it

wayatajannabuhā

ٱلْأَشْقَى

the wretched one

l-ashqā

١١

But the wretched one will avoid it

— Saheeh International

ٱلَّذِى

The one who

alladhī

يَصْلَى

will burn

yaṣlā

ٱلنَّارَ

(in) the Fire

l-nāra

ٱلْكُبْرَىٰ

[the] great

l-kub'rā

١٢

[He] who will [enter and] burn in the greatest Fire,

— Saheeh International

ثُمَّ

Then

thumma

لَا

not

يَمُوتُ

he will die

yamūtu

فِيهَا

therein

fīhā

وَلَا

and not

walā

يَحْيَىٰ

will live

yaḥyā

١٣

Neither dying therein nor living.

— Saheeh International

قَدْ

Certainly

qad

أَفْلَحَ

has succeeded

aflaḥa

مَن

(one) who

man

تَزَكَّىٰ

purifies (himself)

tazakkā

١٤

He has certainly succeeded who purifies himself

— Saheeh International

وَذَكَرَ

And remembers

wadhakara

ٱسْمَ

(the) name

is'ma

رَبِّهِۦ

(of) his Lord

rabbihi

فَصَلَّىٰ

and prays

faṣallā

١٥

And mentions the name of his Lord and prays.

— Saheeh International
