عَلَى On ʿalā the thrones l-arāiki observing yanẓurūna
On adorned couches, observing.
هَلْ Have (not) hal been rewarded thuwwiba the disbelievers l-kufāru (for) what mā they used to kānū do yafʿalūna
Have the disbelievers [not] been rewarded [this Day] for what they used to do?

The Sundering
﷽
الإنشقاق
إِذَا When idhā the sky l-samāu is split asunder inshaqqat
When the sky has split [open]
وَأَذِنَتْ And has listened wa-adhinat to its Lord lirabbihā and was obligated waḥuqqat
And has listened [i.e., responded]1 to its Lord and was obligated [to do so]
وَإِذَا And when wa-idhā the earth l-arḍu is spread muddat
And when the earth has been extended1
وَأَلْقَتْ And has cast out wa-alqat what mā (is) in it fīhā and becomes empty watakhallat
And has cast out that within it1 and relinquished [it].
وَأَذِنَتْ And has listened wa-adhinat to its Lord lirabbihā and was obligated waḥuqqat
And has listened [i.e., responded] to its Lord and was obligated [to do so] -
يَـٰٓأَيُّهَا O yāayyuhā mankind l-insānu Indeed, you innaka (are) laboring kādiḥun to ilā your Lord rabbika (with) exertion kadḥan and you (will) meet Him famulāqīhi
O mankind, indeed you are laboring toward your Lord with [great] exertion1 and will meet it.2
فَأَمَّا Then as for fa-ammā (him) who man is given ūtiya his record kitābahu in his right (hand) biyamīnihi
Then as for he who is given his record in his right hand,
فَسَوْفَ Then soon fasawfa his account will be taken yuḥāsabu an account ḥisāban easy yasīran
He will be judged with an easy account
وَيَنقَلِبُ And he will return wayanqalibu to ilā his people ahlihi happily masrūran
And return to his people in happiness.
وَأَمَّا But as for wa-ammā (him) who man is given ūtiya his record kitābahu behind warāa his back ẓahrihi
But as for he who is given his record behind his back,
فَسَوْفَ Then soon fasawfa he will call yadʿū (for) destruction thubūran
He will cry out for destruction
وَيَصْلَىٰ And he will burn wayaṣlā (in) a Blaze saʿīran
And [enter to] burn in a Blaze.
إِنَّهُۥ Indeed, he innahu had been kāna among fī his people ahlihi happy masrūran
Indeed, he had [once] been among his people in happiness;
إِنَّهُۥ Indeed, he innahu (had) thought ẓanna that an never lan he would return yaḥūra
Indeed, he had thought he would never return [to Allāh].
بَلَىٰٓ Yes balā Indeed inna his Lord rabbahu was kāna of him bihi All-Seer baṣīran
But yes! Indeed, his Lord was ever, of him, Seeing.
فَلَآ But nay falā I swear uq'simu by the twilight glow bil-shafaqi
So I swear by the twilight glow
وَٱلَّيْلِ And the night wa-al-layli and what wamā it envelops wasaqa
And [by] the night and what it envelops
وَٱلْقَمَرِ And the moon wal-qamari when idhā it becomes full ittasaqa
And [by] the moon when it becomes full
لَتَرْكَبُنَّ You will surely embark latarkabunna (to) stage ṭabaqan from ʿan stage ṭabaqin
[That] you will surely embark upon [i.e., experience] state after state.1
فَمَا So what famā (is) for them lahum not lā they believe yu'minūna
So what is [the matter] with them [that] they do not believe,
وَإِذَا And when wa-idhā is recited quri-a to them ʿalayhimu the Quran l-qur'ānu not lā they prostrate yasjudūna
And when the Qur’ān is recited to them, they do not prostrate [to Allāh]?
بَلِ Nay bali Those who alladhīna disbelieved kafarū deny yukadhibūna
But those who have disbelieved deny,
وَٱللَّهُ And Allah wal-lahu (is) most knowing aʿlamu of what bimā they keep within themselves yūʿūna
And Allāh is most knowing of what they keep within themselves.
فَبَشِّرْهُم so give them tidings fabashir'hum of a punishment biʿadhābin painful alīmin
So give them tidings of a painful punishment,
إِلَّا Except illā those who alladhīna believe āmanū and do waʿamilū righteous deeds l-ṣāliḥāti For them lahum (is) a reward ajrun never ghayru ending mamnūnin
Except for those who believe and do righteous deeds. For them is a reward uninterrupted.
