كَلَّآ Nay kallā Indeed inna (the) record kitāba (of) the wicked l-fujāri (is) surely in lafī Sijjin sijjīnin
No! Indeed, the record of the wicked is in sijjeen.
وَمَآ And what wamā can make you know adrāka what mā (is) Sijjin sijjīnun
And what can make you know what is sijjeen?
كِتَـٰبٌۭ A book kitābun written marqūmun
It is [their destination1 recorded in] a register inscribed.
وَيْلٌۭ Woe waylun that Day yawma-idhin to the deniers lil'mukadhibīna
Woe, that Day, to the deniers,
ٱلَّذِينَ Those who alladhīna deny yukadhibūna (the) Day biyawmi (of) the Judgment l-dīni
Who deny the Day of Recompense.
وَمَا And not wamā can deny yukadhibu [of] it bihi except illā every kullu transgressor muʿ'tadin sinful athīmin
And none deny it except every sinful transgressor.
إِذَا When idhā are recited tut'lā to him ʿalayhi Our Verses āyātunā he says qāla Stories asāṭīru (of) the former (people) l-awalīna
When Our verses are recited to him, he says, "Legends of the former peoples."
كَلَّا ۖ Nay kallā But bal (the) stain has covered rāna [over] ʿalā their hearts qulūbihim (for) what mā they used to kānū earn yaksibūna
No! Rather, the stain has covered their hearts of that which they were earning.1
كَلَّآ Nay kallā Indeed, they innahum from ʿan their Lord rabbihim that Day yawma-idhin surely will be partitioned lamaḥjūbūna
No! Indeed, from their Lord, that Day, they will be partitioned.1
ثُمَّ Then thumma indeed, they innahum (surely) will burn laṣālū (in) the Hellfire l-jaḥīmi
Then indeed, they will [enter and] burn in Hellfire.
ثُمَّ Then thumma it will be said yuqālu This hādhā (is) what alladhī you used to kuntum [of it] bihi deny tukadhibūna
Then it will be said [to them], "This is what you used to deny."
كَلَّآ Nay kallā Indeed inna (the) record kitāba (of) the righteous l-abrāri (will be) surely in lafī Illiyin ʿilliyyīna
No! Indeed, the record of the righteous is in ʿilliyyūn.
وَمَآ And what wamā can make you know adrāka what mā (is) Illiyun ʿilliyyūna
And what can make you know what is ʿilliyyūn?
كِتَـٰبٌۭ A book kitābun written marqūmun
It is [their destination1 recorded in] a register inscribed
يَشْهَدُهُ Witness it yashhaduhu those brought near l-muqarabūna
Which is witnessed by those brought near [to Allāh].
إِنَّ Indeed inna the righteous l-abrāra (will be) surely in lafī bliss naʿīmin
Indeed, the righteous will be in pleasure
عَلَى On ʿalā thrones l-arāiki observing yanẓurūna
On adorned couches, observing.
تَعْرِفُ You will recognize taʿrifu in fī their faces wujūhihim (the) radiance naḍrata (of) bliss l-naʿīmi
You will recognize in their faces the radiance of pleasure.
يُسْقَوْنَ They will be given to drink yus'qawna of min a pure wine raḥīqin sealed makhtūmin
They will be given to drink [pure] wine1 [which was] sealed.
خِتَـٰمُهُۥ Its seal khitāmuhu (will be of) musk mis'kun And for wafī that dhālika let aspire falyatanāfasi the aspirers l-mutanāfisūna
The last of it1 is musk. So for this let the competitors compete.
وَمِزَاجُهُۥ And its mixture wamizājuhu (is) of min Tasneem tasnīmin
And its mixture is of Tasneem,1
عَيْنًۭا A spring ʿaynan will drink yashrabu from it bihā those brought near l-muqarabūna
A spring from which those near [to Allāh] drink.
إِنَّ Indeed inna those who alladhīna committed crimes ajramū used to kānū at mina those who alladhīna believed āmanū laugh yaḍḥakūna
Indeed, those who committed crimes used to laugh at those who believed.
وَإِذَا And when wa-idhā they passed marrū by them bihim they winked at one another yataghāmazūna
And when they passed by them, they would exchange derisive glances.
وَإِذَا And when wa-idhā they returned inqalabū to ilā their people ahlihimu they would return inqalabū jesting fakihīna
And when they returned to their people, they would return jesting.
وَإِذَا And when wa-idhā they saw them ra-awhum they said qālū Indeed inna these hāulāi surely have gone astray laḍāllūna
And when they saw them, they would say, "Indeed, those are truly lost."
وَمَآ But not wamā they had been sent ur'silū over them ʿalayhim (as) guardians ḥāfiẓīna
But they had not been sent as guardians over them.
فَٱلْيَوْمَ So today fal-yawma those who alladhīna believed āmanū at mina the disbelievers l-kufāri they will laugh yaḍḥakūna
So Today1 those who believed are laughing at the disbelievers,
