إِذْ When idh called him nādāhu his Lord rabbuhu in the valley bil-wādi the sacred l-muqadasi (of) Tuwa ṭuwan
When his Lord called to him in the sacred valley of Ṭuwā,
ٱذْهَبْ Go idh'hab to ilā Firaun fir'ʿawna Indeed, he innahu (has) transgressed ṭaghā
"Go to Pharaoh. Indeed, he has transgressed.
فَقُلْ And say faqul Would hal [for] you laka [to] ilā [that] an purify yourself tazakkā
And say to him, 'Would you [be willing to] purify yourself
وَأَهْدِيَكَ And I will guide you wa-ahdiyaka to ilā your Lord rabbika so you would fear fatakhshā
And let me guide you to your Lord so you would fear [Him]?'"
فَأَرَىٰهُ Then he showed him fa-arāhu the sign l-āyata the great l-kub'rā
And he showed him the greatest sign,1
فَكَذَّبَ But he denied fakadhaba and disobeyed waʿaṣā
But he [i.e., Pharaoh] denied and disobeyed.
ثُمَّ Then thumma he turned his back adbara striving yasʿā
Then he turned his back, striving [i.e., plotting].1
فَحَشَرَ And he gathered faḥashara and called out fanādā
And he gathered [his people] and called out.
فَقَالَ Then he said faqāla I am anā your Lord rabbukumu the Most High l-aʿlā
And said, "I am your most exalted lord."
فَأَخَذَهُ So seized him fa-akhadhahu Allah l-lahu (with) an exemplary punishment nakāla (for) the last l-ākhirati and the first wal-ūlā
So Allāh seized him in exemplary punishment for the last and the first [transgression].1.
إِنَّ Indeed inna in fī that dhālika surely (is) a lesson laʿib'ratan for whoever liman fears yakhshā
Indeed in that is a lesson [i.e., warning] for whoever would fear [Allāh].
ءَأَنتُمْ Are you a-antum a more difficult ashaddu creation khalqan or ami the heaven l-samāu He constructed it banāhā
Are you a more difficult creation or is the heaven? He [i.e., Allāh] constructed it.
رَفَعَ He raised rafaʿa its ceiling samkahā and proportioned it fasawwāhā
He raised its ceiling and proportioned it.
وَأَغْطَشَ And He darkened wa-aghṭasha its night laylahā and brought out wa-akhraja its brightness ḍuḥāhā
And He darkened its night and extracted its brightness.1
وَٱلْأَرْضَ And the earth wal-arḍa after baʿda that dhālika He spread it daḥāhā
And after that He spread the earth.
أَخْرَجَ He brought forth akhraja from it min'hā its water māahā and its pasture wamarʿāhā
He extracted from it its water and its pasture,
وَٱلْجِبَالَ And the mountains wal-jibāla He made them firm arsāhā
And the mountains He set firmly
مَتَـٰعًۭا (As) a provision matāʿan for you lakum and for your cattle wali-anʿāmikum
As enjoyment [i.e., provision] for you and your grazing livestock.
فَإِذَا But when fa-idhā comes jāati the Overwhelming Calamity l-ṭāmatu the great l-kub'rā
But when there comes the greatest Overwhelming Calamity1 -
يَوْمَ (The) Day yawma will remember yatadhakkaru man l-insānu what mā he strove (for) saʿā
The Day when man will remember that for which he strove,
وَبُرِّزَتِ And will be made manifest waburrizati the Hellfire l-jaḥīmu to (him) who liman sees yarā
And Hellfire will be exposed for [all] those who see -
فَأَمَّا Then as for fa-ammā (him) who man transgressed ṭaghā
So as for he who transgressed
وَءَاثَرَ And preferred waāthara the life l-ḥayata (of) the world l-dun'yā
And preferred the life of the world,
فَإِنَّ Then indeed fa-inna the Hellfire l-jaḥīma it hiya (is) the refuge l-mawā
Then indeed, Hellfire will be [his] refuge.
وَأَمَّا But as for wa-ammā (him) who man feared khāfa standing maqāma (before) his Lord rabbihi and restrained wanahā his soul l-nafsa from ʿani the vain desires l-hawā
But as for he who feared the position of his Lord1 and prevented the soul from [unlawful] inclination,
فَإِنَّ Then indeed fa-inna Paradise l-janata it (is) hiya the refuge l-mawā
Then indeed, Paradise will be [his] refuge.
يَسْـَٔلُونَكَ They ask you yasalūnaka about ʿani the Hour l-sāʿati when ayyāna (is) its arrival mur'sāhā
They ask you, [O Muḥammad], about the Hour: when is its arrival?1
فِيمَ In what fīma (are) you anta [of] min (to) mention it dhik'rāhā
In what [position] are you that you should mention it?1
إِلَىٰ To ilā your Lord rabbika (is) its finality muntahāhā
To your Lord is its finality.1
إِنَّمَآ Only innamā you anta (are) a warner mundhiru (for him) who man fears it yakhshāhā
You are only a warner for those who fear it.
كَأَنَّهُمْ As though they ka-annahum (the) Day yawma they see it yarawnahā not lam they had remained yalbathū except illā an evening ʿashiyyatan or aw a morning thereof ḍuḥāhā
It will be, on the Day they see it,1 as though they had not remained [in the world] except for an afternoon or a morning thereof.
