`Abasa
He Frowned
﷽
عبس
عَبَسَ He frowned ʿabasa and turned away watawallā
He [i.e., the Prophet (ﷺ) ] frowned and turned away
أَن Because an came to him jāahu the blind man l-aʿmā
Because there came to him the blind man,1 [interrupting].
وَمَا But what wamā would make you know yud'rīka that he might laʿallahu purify himself yazzakkā
But what would make you perceive, [O Muḥammad], that perhaps he might be purified1
أَوْ Or aw be reminded yadhakkaru so would benefit him fatanfaʿahu the reminder l-dhik'rā
Or be reminded and the remembrance would benefit him?
أَمَّا As for ammā (him) who mani considers himself free from need is'taghnā
As for he who thinks himself without need,1
فَأَنتَ So you fa-anta to him lahu give attention taṣaddā
To him you give attention.
وَمَا And not wamā upon you ʿalayka that not allā he purifies himself yazzakkā
And not upon you [is any blame] if he will not be purified.1
وَأَمَّا But as for wa-ammā (he) who man came to you jāaka striving yasʿā
But as for he who came to you striving [for knowledge]
فَأَنتَ But you fa-anta from him ʿanhu (are) distracted talahhā
From him you are distracted.
كَلَّآ Nay kallā Indeed, it innahā (is) a reminder tadhkiratun
No! Indeed, they [i.e., these verses] are a reminder;
فَمَن So whosoever faman wills shāa may remember it dhakarahu
So whoever wills may remember it.1
فِى In fī sheets ṣuḥufin honored mukarramatin
[It is recorded] in honored sheets,
بِأَيْدِى In (the) hands bi-aydī (of) scribes safaratin
[Carried] by the hands of messenger-angels,
قُتِلَ Is destroyed qutila [the] man l-insānu how mā ungrateful is he akfarahu
Destroyed [i.e., cursed] is man;1 how disbelieving is he.
مِنْ From min what ayyi thing shayin He created him khalaqahu
From what thing [i.e., substance] did He create him?
مِن From min a semen-drop nuṭ'fatin He created him khalaqahu then He proportioned him faqaddarahu
From a sperm-drop He created him and destined for him;1
ثُمَّ Then thumma the way l-sabīla He made easy for him yassarahu
Then He eased the way for him;1
ثُمَّ Then thumma He causes him to die amātahu and provides a grave for him fa-aqbarahu
Then He causes his death and provides a grave for him.1
ثُمَّ Then thumma when idhā He wills shāa He will resurrect him ansharahu
Then when He wills, He will resurrect him.
كَلَّا Nay kallā Not lammā he has accomplished yaqḍi what mā He commanded him amarahu
No! He [i.e., man] has not yet accomplished what He commanded him.
فَلْيَنظُرِ Then let look falyanẓuri the man l-insānu at ilā his food ṭaʿāmihi
Then let mankind look at his food -
اَنَّا That [We] annā [We] poured ṣababnā the water l-māa (in) abundance ṣabban
How We poured down water in torrents,
ثُمَّ Then thumma We cleaved shaqaqnā the earth l-arḍa splitting shaqqan
Then We broke open the earth, splitting [it with sprouts],
فَأَنۢبَتْنَا Then We caused to grow fa-anbatnā therein fīhā grain ḥabban
And caused to grow within it grain
وَعِنَبًۭا And grapes waʿinaban and green fodder waqaḍban
And grapes and herbage
وَزَيْتُونًۭا And olive wazaytūnan and date-palms wanakhlan
And olive and palm trees
وَحَدَآئِقَ And gardens waḥadāiqa (of) thick foliage ghul'ban
And gardens of dense shrubbery
مَّتَـٰعًۭا (As) a provision matāʿan for you lakum and for your cattle wali-anʿāmikum
[As] enjoyment [i.e., provision] for you and your grazing livestock.
فَإِذَا But when fa-idhā comes jāati the Deafening Blast l-ṣākhatu
But when there comes the Deafening Blast1
يَوْمَ (The) Day yawma will flee yafirru a man l-maru from min his brother akhīhi
On the Day a man will flee from his brother
وَأُمِّهِۦ And his mother wa-ummihi and his father wa-abīhi
And his mother and his father
وَصَـٰحِبَتِهِۦ And his wife waṣāḥibatihi and his children wabanīhi
And his wife and his children,
لِكُلِّ For every likulli man im'ri-in among them min'hum that Day yawma-idhin (will be) a matter shanun occupying him yugh'nīhi
For every man, that Day, will be a matter adequate for him.1
وُجُوهٌۭ Faces wujūhun that Day yawma-idhin (will be) bright mus'firatun
[Some] faces, that Day, will be bright -
ضَاحِكَةٌۭ Laughing ḍāḥikatun rejoicing at good news mus'tabshiratun
Laughing, rejoicing at good news.
وَوُجُوهٌۭ And faces wawujūhun that Day yawma-idhin upon them ʿalayhā (will be) dust ghabaratun
And [other] faces, that Day, will have upon them dust.
تَرْهَقُهَا Will cover them tarhaquhā darkness qataratun
Blackness will cover them.
أُو۟لَـٰٓئِكَ Those ulāika [they] humu (are) the disbelievers l-kafaratu the wicked ones l-fajaratu
Those are the disbelievers, the wicked ones.
