أَفَرَءَيْتَ Have you seen afara-ayta (he) who mani takes ittakhadha (as) his god ilāhahu his desire hawāhu and Allah lets him go astray wa-aḍallahu and Allah lets him go astray l-lahu knowingly ʿalā knowingly ʿil'min and He sets a seal wakhatama upon ʿalā his hearing samʿihi and his heart waqalbihi and puts wajaʿala over ʿalā his vision baṣarihi a veil ghishāwatan Then who faman will guide him yahdīhi after min after baʿdi Allah l-lahi Then will not afalā you receive admonition tadhakkarūna
Have you seen he who has taken as his god his [own] desire, and Allāh has sent him astray due to knowledge1 and has set a seal upon his hearing and his heart and put over his vision a veil? So who will guide him after Allāh? Then will you not be reminded?
وَقَالُوا۟ And they say waqālū Not mā it hiya (is) but illā our life ḥayātunā (of) the world l-dun'yā we die namūtu and we live wanaḥyā and not wamā destroys us yuh'likunā except illā the time l-dahru And not wamā for them lahum of that bidhālika any min knowledge ʿil'min not in they hum (do) but illā guess yaẓunnūna
And they say, "There is not but our worldly life; we die and live,1 and nothing destroys us except time." And they have of that no knowledge; they are only assuming.
وَإِذَا And when wa-idhā are recited tut'lā to them ʿalayhim Our Verses āyātunā clear bayyinātin not mā is kāna their argument ḥujjatahum except illā that an they say qālū Bring i'tū our forefathers biābāinā if in you are kuntum truthful ṣādiqīna
And when Our verses are recited to them as clear evidences, their argument is only that they say, "Bring [back] our forefathers, if you should be truthful."
قُلِ Say quli Allah l-lahu gives you life yuḥ'yīkum then thumma causes you to die yumītukum then thumma He will gather you yajmaʿukum to ilā (the) Day yawmi (of) the Resurrection l-qiyāmati no lā doubt rayba about it fīhi But walākinna most akthara (of) the people l-nāsi (do) not lā know yaʿlamūna
Say, "Allāh causes you to live, then causes you to die; then He will assemble you for the Day of Resurrection, about which there is no doubt, but most of the people do not know."
وَلِلَّهِ And for Allah walillahi (is the) dominion mul'ku (of) the heavens l-samāwāti and the earth wal-arḍi and (the) Day wayawma is established taqūmu the Hour l-sāʿatu that Day yawma-idhin will lose yakhsaru the falsifiers l-mub'ṭilūna
And to Allāh belongs the dominion of the heavens and the earth. And the Day the Hour appears - that Day the falsifiers will lose.
وَتَرَىٰ And you will see watarā every kulla nation ummatin kneeling jāthiyatan Every kullu nation ummatin will be called tud'ʿā to ilā its record kitābihā Today l-yawma you will be recompensed tuj'zawna (for) what mā you used to kuntum do taʿmalūna
And you will see every nation kneeling [from fear]. Every nation will be called to its record [and told], "Today you will be recompensed for what you used to do.
هَـٰذَا This hādhā Our Record kitābunā speaks yanṭiqu about you ʿalaykum in truth bil-ḥaqi Indeed, We innā [We] used to kunnā transcribe nastansikhu what mā you used to kuntum do taʿmalūna
This, Our record, speaks about you in truth. Indeed, We were having transcribed1 whatever you used to do."
فَأَمَّا Then as for fa-ammā those who alladhīna believed āmanū and did waʿamilū [the] righteous deeds l-ṣāliḥāti will admit them fayud'khiluhum their Lord rabbuhum in(to) fī His mercy raḥmatihi That dhālika [it] huwa (is) the success l-fawzu clear l-mubīnu
So as for those who believed and did righteous deeds, their Lord will admit them into His mercy. That is what is the clear attainment.
وَأَمَّا But as for wa-ammā those who alladhīna disbelieved kafarū Then were not afalam Then were not takun My Verses āyātī recited tut'lā to you ʿalaykum but you were proud fa-is'takbartum and you became wakuntum a people qawman criminals muj'rimīna
But as for those who disbelieved, [it will be said], "Were not Our verses recited to you, but you were arrogant and became a criminal people?
وَإِذَا And when wa-idhā it was said qīla Indeed inna (the) Promise waʿda (of) Allah l-lahi (is) true ḥaqqun and the Hour wal-sāʿatu (there is) no lā doubt rayba about it fīhā you said qul'tum Not mā we know nadrī what mā the Hour (is) l-sāʿatu Not in we think naẓunnu except illā an assumption ẓannan and not wamā we naḥnu (are) convinced bimus'tayqinīna
And when it was said, 'Indeed, the promise of Allāh is truth and the Hour [is coming] - no doubt about it,' you said, 'We know not what is the Hour. We assume only assumption, and we are not convinced.'"
