أَفَمَن So is (one for) whom afaman Allah has expanded sharaḥa Allah has expanded l-lahu his breast ṣadrahu for Islam lil'is'lāmi so he fahuwa (is) upon ʿalā a light nūrin from min his Lord rabbihi So woe fawaylun to (those are) hardened lil'qāsiyati their hearts qulūbuhum from min (the) remembrance of Allah dhik'ri (the) remembrance of Allah l-lahi Those ulāika (are) in fī error ḍalālin clear mubīnin
So is one whose breast Allāh has expanded to [accept] Islām and he is upon [i.e., guided by] a light from his Lord [like one whose heart rejects it]? Then woe to those whose hearts are hardened against the remembrance of Allāh. Those are in manifest error.
ٱللَّهُ Allah al-lahu has revealed nazzala (the) best aḥsana (of) [the] statement l-ḥadīthi a Book kitāban (its parts) resembling each other mutashābihan oft-repeated mathāniya Shiver taqshaʿirru from it min'hu (the) skins julūdu (of) those who alladhīna fear yakhshawna their Lord rabbahum then thumma relax talīnu their skins julūduhum and their hearts waqulūbuhum at ilā (the) remembrance dhik'ri (of) Allah l-lahi That dhālika (is the) guidance hudā (of) Allah l-lahi He guides yahdī with it bihi whom man He wills yashāu And whoever waman Allah lets go astray yuḍ'lili Allah lets go astray l-lahu then not famā for him lahu any min guide hādin
Allāh has sent down the best statement: a consistent Book wherein is reiteration. The skins shiver therefrom of those who fear their Lord; then their skins and their hearts relax at the remembrance [i.e., mention] of Allāh. That is the guidance of Allāh by which He guides whom He wills. And one whom Allāh sends astray - for him there is no guide.
أَفَمَن Then (is) he who afaman will shield yattaqī with his face biwajhihi (the) worst sūa punishment l-ʿadhābi (on the) Day yawma (of) the Resurrection l-qiyāmati And it will be said waqīla to the wrongdoers lilẓẓālimīna Taste dhūqū what mā you used to kuntum earn taksibūna
Then is he who will shield with his face1 the worst of the punishment on the Day of Resurrection [like one secure from it]? And it will be said to the wrongdoers, "Taste what you used to earn."
كَذَّبَ Denied kadhaba those who alladhīna (were) before them min (were) before them qablihim so came upon them fa-atāhumu the punishment l-ʿadhābu from min where ḥaythu not lā they perceive yashʿurūna
Those before them denied, and punishment came upon them from where they did not perceive.
فَأَذَاقَهُمُ So Allah made them fa-adhāqahumu So Allah made them l-lahu the disgrace l-khiz'ya in fī the life l-ḥayati (of) the world l-dun'yā and certainly (the) punishment walaʿadhābu (of) the Hereafter l-ākhirati (is) greater akbaru if law they kānū knew yaʿlamūna
So Allāh made them taste disgrace in worldly life. But the punishment of the Hereafter is greater, if they only knew.
وَلَقَدْ And indeed walaqad We have set forth ḍarabnā for people lilnnāsi in fī this hādhā Quran l-qur'āni of min every kulli example mathalin so that they may laʿallahum take heed yatadhakkarūna
And We have certainly presented for the people in this Qur’ān from every [kind of] example - that they might remember.
قُرْءَانًا A Quran qur'ānan (in) Arabic ʿarabiyyan without ghayra any dhī crookedness ʿiwajin so that they may laʿallahum (become) righteous yattaqūna
[It is] an Arabic Qur’ān, without any deviance1 that they might become righteous.2
ضَرَبَ Allah sets forth ḍaraba Allah sets forth l-lahu an example mathalan a man rajulan about him fīhi partners shurakāu quarreling mutashākisūna and a man warajulan (belonging) exclusively salaman to one man lirajulin are hal they both equal yastawiyāni (in) comparison mathalan All praise l-ḥamdu (be) to Allah lillahi Nay bal most of them aktharuhum (do) not lā know yaʿlamūna
Allāh presents an example: a man [i.e., slave] owned by quarreling partners and another belonging exclusively to one man - are they equal in comparison? Praise be to Allāh! But most of them do not know.
إِنَّكَ Indeed, you innaka will die mayyitun and indeed, they wa-innahum (will also) die mayyitūna
Indeed, you are to die, and indeed, they are to die.
ثُمَّ Then thumma indeed you innakum (on the) Day yawma (of) the Resurrection l-qiyāmati before ʿinda your Lord rabbikum will dispute takhtaṣimūna
Then indeed you, on the Day of Resurrection, before your Lord, will dispute.
