وَقَالُوا۟ And they (will) say waqālū What (is) mā for us lanā not lā we see narā men rijālan we used to kunnā count them naʿudduhum among mina the bad ones l-ashrāri
And they will say, "Why do we not see men whom we used to count among the worst?1
أَتَّخَذْنَـٰهُمْ Did we take them attakhadhnāhum (in) ridicule sikh'riyyan or am has turned away zāghat from them ʿanhumu the vision l-abṣāru
Is it [because] we took them in ridicule, or has [our] vision turned away from them?"
إِنَّ Indeed inna that dhālika (is) surely (the) truth laḥaqqun (the) quarreling takhāṣumu (of the) people ahli (of) the Fire l-nāri
Indeed, that is truth [i.e., reality] - the quarreling of the people of the Fire.
قُلْ Say qul Only innamā I am anā a warner mundhirun and not wamā (is there) any min god ilāhin except illā Allah l-lahu the One l-wāḥidu the Irresistible l-qahāru

Lord of the heavens and the earth and whatever is between them, the Exalted in Might,1 the Perpetual Forgiver."2
قُلْ Say qul It (is) huwa a news naba-on great ʿaẓīmun
Say, "It is great news
أَنتُمْ You antum from it ʿanhu turn away muʿ'riḍūna
From which you turn away.
مَا Not mā is kāna for me liya any min knowledge ʿil'min (of) the chiefs bil-mala-i the exalted l-aʿlā when idh they were disputing yakhtaṣimūna

It has not been revealed to me except that I am a clear warner."
إِذْ When idh said qāla your Lord rabbuka to the Angels lil'malāikati Indeed, I Am innī going to create khāliqun a human being basharan from min clay ṭīnin
[So mention] when your Lord said to the angels, "Indeed, I am going to create a human being from clay.
فَإِذَا So when fa-idhā I have proportioned him sawwaytuhu and breathed wanafakhtu into him fīhi of min My spirit rūḥī then fall down faqaʿū to him lahu prostrating sājidīna
So when I have proportioned him and breathed into him of My [created] soul,1 then fall down to him in prostration."
فَسَجَدَ So prostrated fasajada the Angels l-malāikatu all of them kulluhum together ajmaʿūna
So the angels prostrated - all of them entirely,
إِلَّآ Except illā Iblis ib'līsa he was arrogant is'takbara and became wakāna of mina the disbelievers l-kāfirīna
Except Iblees;1 he was arrogant and became among the disbelievers.
قَالَ He said qāla O Iblis yāib'līsu What mā prevented you manaʿaka that an you (should) prostrate tasjuda to (one) whom limā I created khalaqtu with My Hands biyadayya Are you arrogant astakbarta or am are you kunta of mina the exalted ones l-ʿālīna
[Allāh] said, "O Iblees, what prevented you from prostrating to that which I created with My hands?1 Were you arrogant [then], or were you [already] among the haughty?"
قَالَ He said qāla I am anā better khayrun than him min'hu You created me khalaqtanī from min fire nārin and You created him wakhalaqtahu from min clay ṭīnin
He said, "I am better than him. You created me from fire and created him from clay."
قَالَ He said qāla Then get out fa-ukh'ruj of it min'hā for indeed, you fa-innaka (are) accursed rajīmun
[Allāh] said, "Then get out of it [i.e., Paradise], for indeed, you are expelled.
وَإِنَّ And indeed wa-inna upon you ʿalayka (is) My curse laʿnatī until ilā (the) Day yawmi (of) Judgment l-dīni
And indeed, upon you is My curse until the Day of Recompense."
قَالَ He said qāla My Lord rabbi Then give me respite fa-anẓir'nī until ilā (the) Day yawmi they are resurrected yub'ʿathūna
He said, "My Lord, then reprieve me until the Day they are resurrected."
قَالَ He said qāla Then indeed, you fa-innaka (are) of mina those given respite l-munẓarīna
[Allāh] said, "So indeed, you are of those reprieved
إِلَىٰ Until ilā (the) Day yawmi (of) the time l-waqti well-known l-maʿlūmi
Until the Day of the time well-known."
قَالَ He said qāla Then by Your might fabiʿizzatika I will surely mislead them la-ugh'wiyannahum all ajmaʿīna
[Iblees] said, "By Your might, I will surely mislead them all.
إِلَّا Except illā Your slaves ʿibādaka among them min'humu the chosen ones l-mukh'laṣīna
Except, among them, Your chosen servants."
