وَلَوْ

And if

walaw

تَرَىٰٓ

you (could) see

tarā

إِذِ

when

idhi

ٱلْمُجْرِمُونَ

the criminals

l-muj'rimūna

نَاكِسُوا۟

(will) hang

nākisū

رُءُوسِهِمْ

their heads

ruūsihim

عِندَ

before

ʿinda

رَبِّهِمْ

their Lord

rabbihim

رَبَّنَآ

Our Lord

rabbanā

أَبْصَرْنَا

we have seen

abṣarnā

وَسَمِعْنَا

and we have heard

wasamiʿ'nā

فَٱرْجِعْنَا

so return us

fa-ir'jiʿ'nā

نَعْمَلْ

we will do

naʿmal

صَـٰلِحًا

righteous (deeds)

ṣāliḥan

إِنَّا

Indeed, we

innā

مُوقِنُونَ

(are now) certain

mūqinūna

١٢

If you could but see when the criminals are hanging their heads before their Lord, [saying], "Our Lord, we have seen and heard, so return us [to the world]; we will work righteousness. Indeed, we are [now] certain."

— Saheeh International

وَلَوْ

And if

walaw

شِئْنَا

We (had) willed

shi'nā

لَـَٔاتَيْنَا

surely We (would) have given

laātaynā

كُلَّ

every

kulla

نَفْسٍ

soul

nafsin

هُدَىٰهَا

its guidance

hudāhā

وَلَـٰكِنْ

but

walākin

حَقَّ

(is) true

ḥaqqa

ٱلْقَوْلُ

the Word

l-qawlu

مِنِّى

from Me

minnī

لَأَمْلَأَنَّ

that I will surely fill

la-amla-anna

جَهَنَّمَ

Hell

jahannama

مِنَ

with

mina

ٱلْجِنَّةِ

the jinn

l-jinati

وَٱلنَّاسِ

and the men

wal-nāsi

أَجْمَعِينَ

together

ajmaʿīna

١٣

And if We had willed, We could have given every soul its guidance, but the word1 from Me will come into effect [that] "I will surely fill Hell with jinn and people all together.

— Saheeh International

فَذُوقُوا۟

So taste

fadhūqū

بِمَا

because

bimā

نَسِيتُمْ

you forgot

nasītum

لِقَآءَ

(the) meeting

liqāa

يَوْمِكُمْ

(of) this Day of yours

yawmikum

هَـٰذَآ

(of) this Day of yours

hādhā

إِنَّا

Indeed, We

innā

نَسِينَـٰكُمْ ۖ

have forgotten you

nasīnākum

وَذُوقُوا۟

And taste

wadhūqū

عَذَابَ

(the) punishment

ʿadhāba

ٱلْخُلْدِ

(of) eternity

l-khul'di

بِمَا

for what

bimā

كُنتُمْ

you used (to)

kuntum

تَعْمَلُونَ

do

taʿmalūna

١٤

So taste [punishment] because you forgot the meeting of this, your Day; indeed, We have [accordingly] forgotten you. And taste the punishment of eternity for what you used to do."

— Saheeh International

إِنَّمَا

Only

innamā

يُؤْمِنُ

believe

yu'minu

بِـَٔايَـٰتِنَا

in Our Verses

biāyātinā

ٱلَّذِينَ

those who

alladhīna

إِذَا

when

idhā

ذُكِّرُوا۟

they are reminded

dhukkirū

بِهَا

of them

bihā

خَرُّوا۟

fall down

kharrū

سُجَّدًۭا

prostrating

sujjadan

وَسَبَّحُوا۟

and glorify

wasabbaḥū

بِحَمْدِ

(the) praises

biḥamdi

رَبِّهِمْ

(of) their Lord

rabbihim

وَهُمْ

and they

wahum

لَا

are not arrogant

يَسْتَكْبِرُونَ ۩

are not arrogant

yastakbirūna

١٥

Only those believe in Our verses who, when they are reminded by them, fall down in prostration and exalt [Allāh] with praise of their Lord, and they are not arrogant.

— Saheeh International

تَتَجَافَىٰ

Forsake

tatajāfā

جُنُوبُهُمْ

their sides

junūbuhum

عَنِ

from

ʿani

ٱلْمَضَاجِعِ

(their) beds

l-maḍājiʿi

يَدْعُونَ

they call

yadʿūna

رَبَّهُمْ

their Lord

rabbahum

خَوْفًۭا

(in) fear

khawfan

وَطَمَعًۭا

and hope

waṭamaʿan

وَمِمَّا

and out of what

wamimmā

رَزَقْنَـٰهُمْ

We have provided them

razaqnāhum

يُنفِقُونَ

they spend

yunfiqūna

١٦

Their sides part [i.e., they arise] from [their] beds; they supplicate their Lord in fear and aspiration, and from what We have provided them, they spend.1

— Saheeh International

فَلَا

And not

falā

تَعْلَمُ

knows

taʿlamu

نَفْسٌۭ

a soul

nafsun

مَّآ

what

أُخْفِىَ

is hidden

ukh'fiya

لَهُم

for them

lahum

مِّن

of

min

قُرَّةِ

(the) comfort

qurrati

أَعْيُنٍۢ

(for) the eyes

aʿyunin

جَزَآءًۢ

(as) a reward

jazāan

بِمَا

for what

bimā

كَانُوا۟

they used (to)

kānū

يَعْمَلُونَ

do

yaʿmalūna

١٧

And no soul knows what has been hidden for them of comfort for eyes [i.e., satisfaction] as reward for what they used to do.

— Saheeh International

أَفَمَن

Then is one who

afaman

كَانَ

is

kāna

مُؤْمِنًۭا

a believer

mu'minan

كَمَن

like (him) who

kaman

كَانَ

is

kāna

فَاسِقًۭا ۚ

defiantly disobedient

fāsiqan

لَّا

Not

يَسْتَوُۥنَ

they are equal

yastawūna

١٨

Then is one who was a believer like one who was defiantly disobedient? They are not equal.

— Saheeh International

أَمَّا

As for

ammā

ٱلَّذِينَ

those who

alladhīna

ءَامَنُوا۟

believe

āmanū

وَعَمِلُوا۟

and do

waʿamilū

ٱلصَّـٰلِحَـٰتِ

righteous deeds

l-ṣāliḥāti

فَلَهُمْ

then for them

falahum

جَنَّـٰتُ

(are) Gardens

jannātu

ٱلْمَأْوَىٰ

(of) Refuge

l-mawā

نُزُلًۢا

(as) hospitality

nuzulan

بِمَا

for what

bimā

كَانُوا۟

they used (to)

kānū

يَعْمَلُونَ

do

yaʿmalūna

١٩

As for those who believed and did righteous deeds, for them will be the Gardens of Refuge as accommodation for what they used to do.

— Saheeh International

وَأَمَّا

But as for

wa-ammā

ٱلَّذِينَ

those who

alladhīna

فَسَقُوا۟

are defiantly disobedient

fasaqū

فَمَأْوَىٰهُمُ

then their refuge

famawāhumu

ٱلنَّارُ ۖ

(is) the Fire

l-nāru

كُلَّمَآ

Every time

kullamā

أَرَادُوٓا۟

they wish

arādū

أَن

to

an

يَخْرُجُوا۟

come out

yakhrujū

مِنْهَآ

from it

min'hā

أُعِيدُوا۟

they (will) be returned

uʿīdū

فِيهَا

in it

fīhā

وَقِيلَ

and it (will) be said

waqīla

لَهُمْ

to them

lahum

ذُوقُوا۟

Taste

dhūqū

عَذَابَ

(the) punishment

ʿadhāba

ٱلنَّارِ

(of) the Fire

l-nāri

ٱلَّذِى

which

alladhī

كُنتُم

you used (to)

kuntum

بِهِۦ

[in it]

bihi

تُكَذِّبُونَ

deny

tukadhibūna

٢٠

But as for those who defiantly disobeyed, their refuge is the Fire. Every time they wish to emerge from it, they will be returned to it while it is said to them, "Taste the punishment of the Fire which you used to deny."
