وَلَقَدْ And verily walaqad We gave ātaynā Luqman luq'māna the wisdom l-ḥik'mata that ani Be grateful ush'kur to Allah lillahi And whoever waman (is) grateful yashkur then only fa-innamā he is grateful yashkuru for himself linafsihi And whoever waman (is) ungrateful kafara then indeed fa-inna Allah l-laha (is) Free of need ghaniyyun Praiseworthy ḥamīdun
And We had certainly given Luqmān wisdom [and said], "Be grateful to Allāh." And whoever is grateful is grateful for [the benefit of] himself. And whoever denies [His favor] - then indeed, Allāh is Free of need and Praiseworthy.
وَإِذْ And when wa-idh said qāla Luqman luq'mānu to his son li-ib'nihi while he wahuwa (was) instructing him yaʿiẓuhu O my son yābunayya (Do) not lā associate partners tush'rik with Allah bil-lahi Indeed inna associating partners l-shir'ka (is) surely an injustice laẓul'mun great ʿaẓīmun
And [mention, O Muḥammad], when Luqmān said to his son while he was instructing him, "O my son, do not associate [anything] with Allāh. Indeed, association [with Him] is great injustice."
وَوَصَّيْنَا And We have enjoined wawaṣṣaynā (upon) man l-insāna for his parents biwālidayhi carried him ḥamalathu his mother ummuhu (in) weakness wahnan upon ʿalā weakness wahnin and his weaning wafiṣāluhu (is) in fī two years ʿāmayni that ani Be grateful ush'kur to Me lī and to your parents waliwālidayka towards Me ilayya (is) the destination l-maṣīru
And We have enjoined upon man [care] for his parents. His mother carried him, [increasing her] in weakness upon weakness, and his weaning is in two years. Be grateful to Me and to your parents; to Me is the [final] destination.
وَإِن But if wa-in they strive against you jāhadāka on ʿalā that an you associate partners tush'rika with Me bī what mā not laysa you have laka of it bihi any knowledge ʿil'mun then (do) not falā obey both of them tuṭiʿ'humā But accompany them waṣāḥib'humā in fī the world l-dun'yā (with) kindness maʿrūfan and follow wa-ittabiʿ (the) path sabīla (of him) who man turns anāba to Me ilayya Then thumma towards Me ilayya (is) your return marjiʿukum then I will inform you fa-unabbi-ukum of what bimā you used (to) kuntum do taʿmalūna
But if they endeavor to make you associate with Me that of which you have no knowledge,1 do not obey them but accompany them in [this] world with appropriate kindness and follow the way of those who turn back to Me [in repentance]. Then to Me will be your return, and I will inform you about what you used to do.
يَـٰبُنَىَّ O my son yābunayya Indeed it innahā if in it be taku (the) weight mith'qāla (of) a grain ḥabbatin of min a mustard seed khardalin and it be fatakun in fī a rock ṣakhratin or aw in fī the heavens l-samāwāti or aw in fī the earth l-arḍi Allah will bring it forth yati Allah will bring it forth bihā Allah will bring it forth l-lahu Indeed inna Allah l-laha (is) All-Subtle laṭīfun All-Aware khabīrun
[And Luqmān said], "O my son, indeed if it [i.e., a wrong] should be the weight of a mustard seed and should be within a rock or [anywhere] in the heavens or in the earth, Allāh will bring it forth. Indeed, Allāh is Subtle1 and Aware.
يَـٰبُنَىَّ O my son yābunayya Establish aqimi the prayer l-ṣalata and enjoin wamur [with] the right bil-maʿrūfi and forbid wa-in'ha from ʿani the wrong l-munkari and be patient wa-iṣ'bir over ʿalā what mā befalls you aṣābaka Indeed inna that dhālika (is) of min the matters requiring determination ʿazmi the matters requiring determination l-umūri
O my son, establish prayer, enjoin what is right, forbid what is wrong, and be patient over what befalls you. Indeed, [all] that is of the matters [requiring] resolve.1
وَلَا And (do) not walā turn tuṣaʿʿir your cheek khaddaka from men lilnnāsi and (do) not walā walk tamshi in fī the earth l-arḍi exultantly maraḥan Indeed inna Allah l-laha (does) not lā like yuḥibbu every kulla self-conceited mukh'tālin boaster fakhūrin
And do not turn your cheek [in contempt] toward people1 and do not walk through the earth exultantly. Indeed, Allāh does not like everyone self-deluded and boastful.
وَٱقْصِدْ And be moderate wa-iq'ṣid in fī your pace mashyika and lower wa-ugh'ḍuḍ [of] min your voice ṣawtika Indeed inna (the) harshest ankara (of all) sounds l-aṣwāti (is) surely (the) voice laṣawtu (of) the donkeys l-ḥamīri
And be moderate in your pace and lower your voice; indeed, the most disagreeable of sounds is the voice of donkeys."
