قَالَ He said qāla Only innamā I have been given it ūtītuhu on (account) ʿalā (of) knowledge ʿil'min I have ʿindī Did not awalam he know yaʿlam that anna Allah l-laha indeed qad destroyed ahlaka before him min before him qablihi of mina the generations l-qurūni who man [they] huwa (were) stronger ashaddu than him min'hu (in) strength quwwatan and greater wa-aktharu (in) accumulation jamʿan And not walā will be questioned yus'alu about ʿan their sins dhunūbihimu the criminals l-muj'rimūna
He said, "I was only given it because of knowledge I have." Did he not know that Allāh had destroyed before him of generations those who were greater than him in power and greater in accumulation [of wealth]? But the criminals, about their sins, will not be asked.1
فَخَرَجَ So he went forth fakharaja to ʿalā his people qawmihi in fī his adornment zīnatihi Said qāla those who alladhīna desire yurīdūna the life l-ḥayata (of) the world l-dun'yā O! Would that yālayta for us lanā (the) like mith'la (of) what mā has been given ūtiya (to) Qarun qārūnu Indeed, he innahu (is the) owner ladhū (of) fortune ḥaẓẓin great ʿaẓīmin
So he came out before his people in his adornment. Those who desired the worldly life said, "Oh, would that we had like what was given to Qārūn. Indeed, he is one of great fortune."
وَقَالَ But said waqāla those who alladhīna were given ūtū the knowledge l-ʿil'ma Woe to you waylakum (The) reward thawābu (of) Allah l-lahi (is) better khayrun for (he) who liman believes āmana and does waʿamila righteous (deeds) ṣāliḥan And not walā it is granted yulaqqāhā except illā (to) the patient ones l-ṣābirūna
But those who had been given knowledge said, "Woe to you! The reward of Allāh is better for he who believes and does righteousness. And none are granted it except the patient."
فَخَسَفْنَا Then We caused to swallow up fakhasafnā him bihi and his home wabidārihi the earth l-arḍa Then not famā was kāna for him lahu any min group fi-atin (to) help him yanṣurūnahu besides min besides dūni Allah l-lahi and not wamā was kāna (he) of mina those who (could) defend themselves l-muntaṣirīna
And We caused the earth to swallow him and his home. And there was for him no company to aid him other than Allāh, nor was he of those who [could] defend themselves.
وَأَصْبَحَ And began wa-aṣbaḥa those who alladhīna (had) wished tamannaw his position makānahu the day before bil-amsi (to) say yaqūlūna Ah! That wayka-anna Allah l-laha extends yabsuṭu the provision l-riz'qa for whom liman He wills yashāu of min His slaves ʿibādihi and restricts it wayaqdiru If not lawlā that an Allah had favored manna Allah had favored l-lahu [to] us ʿalaynā He would have caused it to swallow us lakhasafa He would have caused it to swallow us binā Ah! That wayka-annahu not lā will succeed yuf'liḥu the disbelievers l-kāfirūna
And those who had wished for his position the previous day began to say, "Oh, how Allāh extends provision to whom He wills of His servants and restricts it! If not that Allāh had conferred favor on us, He would have caused it to swallow us. Oh, how the disbelievers do not succeed!"
تِلْكَ That til'ka the Home l-dāru (of) the Hereafter l-ākhiratu We assign it najʿaluhā to those who lilladhīna (do) not lā desire yurīdūna exaltedness ʿuluwwan in fī the earth l-arḍi and not walā corruption fasādan And the good end wal-ʿāqibatu (is) for the righteous lil'muttaqīna
That home of the Hereafter We assign to those who do not desire exaltedness upon the earth or corruption. And the [best] outcome is for the righteous.
مَن Whoever man comes jāa with a good (deed) bil-ḥasanati then for him falahu (will be) better khayrun than it min'hā and whoever waman comes jāa with an evil (deed) bil-sayi-ati then not falā will be recompensed yuj'zā those who alladhīna do ʿamilū the evil (deeds) l-sayiāti except illā what mā they used (to) kānū do yaʿmalūna
Whoever comes [on the Day of Judgement] with a good deed will have better than it; and whoever comes with an evil deed - then those who did evil deeds will not be recompensed except [as much as] what they used to do.
