۞ وَلَقَدْ

And indeed

walaqad

وَصَّلْنَا

We have conveyed

waṣṣalnā

لَهُمُ

to them

lahumu

ٱلْقَوْلَ

the Word

l-qawla

لَعَلَّهُمْ

so that they may

laʿallahum

يَتَذَكَّرُونَ

remember

yatadhakkarūna

٥١

And We have [repeatedly] conveyed to them the word [i.e., the Qur’ān] that they might be reminded.

— Saheeh International

ٱلَّذِينَ

Those who

alladhīna

ءَاتَيْنَـٰهُمُ

We gave them

ātaynāhumu

ٱلْكِتَـٰبَ

the Scripture

l-kitāba

مِن

before it

min

قَبْلِهِۦ

before it

qablihi

هُم

they

hum

بِهِۦ

in it

bihi

يُؤْمِنُونَ

believe

yu'minūna

٥٢

Those to whom We gave the Scripture before it - they1 are believers in it.

— Saheeh International

وَإِذَا

And when

wa-idhā

يُتْلَىٰ

it is recited

yut'lā

عَلَيْهِمْ

to them

ʿalayhim

قَالُوٓا۟

they say

qālū

ءَامَنَّا

We believe

āmannā

بِهِۦٓ

in it

bihi

إِنَّهُ

Indeed, it

innahu

ٱلْحَقُّ

(is) the truth

l-ḥaqu

مِن

from

min

رَّبِّنَآ

our Lord

rabbinā

إِنَّا

Indeed, we

innā

كُنَّا

[we] were

kunnā

مِن

before it

min

قَبْلِهِۦ

before it

qablihi

مُسْلِمِينَ

Muslims

mus'limīna

٥٣

And when it is recited to them, they say, "We have believed in it; indeed, it is the truth from our Lord. Indeed we were, [even] before it, Muslims [i.e., submitting to Allāh]."

— Saheeh International

أُو۟لَـٰٓئِكَ

Those

ulāika

يُؤْتَوْنَ

will be given

yu'tawna

أَجْرَهُم

their reward

ajrahum

مَّرَّتَيْنِ

twice

marratayni

بِمَا

because

bimā

صَبَرُوا۟

they are patient

ṣabarū

وَيَدْرَءُونَ

and they repel

wayadraūna

بِٱلْحَسَنَةِ

with good

bil-ḥasanati

ٱلسَّيِّئَةَ

the evil

l-sayi-ata

وَمِمَّا

and from what

wamimmā

رَزَقْنَـٰهُمْ

We have provided them

razaqnāhum

يُنفِقُونَ

they spend

yunfiqūna

٥٤

Those will be given their reward twice for what they patiently endured and [because] they avert evil through good, and from what We have provided them they spend.

— Saheeh International

وَإِذَا

And when

wa-idhā

سَمِعُوا۟

they hear

samiʿū

ٱللَّغْوَ

vain talk

l-laghwa

أَعْرَضُوا۟

they turn away

aʿraḍū

عَنْهُ

from it

ʿanhu

وَقَالُوا۟

and say

waqālū

لَنَآ

For us

lanā

أَعْمَـٰلُنَا

our deeds

aʿmālunā

وَلَكُمْ

and for you

walakum

أَعْمَـٰلُكُمْ

your deeds

aʿmālukum

سَلَـٰمٌ

Peace (be)

salāmun

عَلَيْكُمْ

on you

ʿalaykum

لَا

not

نَبْتَغِى

we seek

nabtaghī

ٱلْجَـٰهِلِينَ

the ignorant

l-jāhilīna

٥٥

And when they hear ill speech, they turn away from it and say, "For us are our deeds, and for you are your deeds. Peace will be upon you;1 we seek not the ignorant."

— Saheeh International

إِنَّكَ

Indeed, you

innaka

لَا

(can) not

تَهْدِى

guide

tahdī

مَنْ

whom

man

أَحْبَبْتَ

you love

aḥbabta

وَلَـٰكِنَّ

but

walākinna

ٱللَّهَ

Allah

l-laha

يَهْدِى

guides

yahdī

مَن

whom

man

يَشَآءُ ۚ

He wills

yashāu

وَهُوَ

And He

wahuwa

أَعْلَمُ

(is) most knowing

aʿlamu

بِٱلْمُهْتَدِينَ

(of) the guided ones

bil-muh'tadīna

٥٦

Indeed, [O Muḥammad], you do not guide whom you like, but Allāh guides whom He wills. And He is most knowing of the [rightly] guided.

— Saheeh International

وَقَالُوٓا۟

And they say

waqālū

إِن

If

in

نَّتَّبِعِ

we follow

nattabiʿi

ٱلْهُدَىٰ

the guidance

l-hudā

مَعَكَ

with you

maʿaka

نُتَخَطَّفْ

we would be swept

nutakhaṭṭaf

مِنْ

from

min

أَرْضِنَآ ۚ

our land

arḍinā

أَوَلَمْ

Have not

awalam

نُمَكِّن

We established

numakkin

لَّهُمْ

for them

lahum

حَرَمًا

a sanctuary

ḥaraman

ءَامِنًۭا

secure

āminan

يُجْبَىٰٓ

are brought

yuj'bā

إِلَيْهِ

to it

ilayhi

ثَمَرَٰتُ

fruits

thamarātu

كُلِّ

(of) all

kulli

شَىْءٍۢ

things

shayin

رِّزْقًۭا

a provision

riz'qan

مِّن

from

min

لَّدُنَّا

Us

ladunnā

وَلَـٰكِنَّ

But

walākinna

أَكْثَرَهُمْ

most of them

aktharahum

لَا

(do) not

يَعْلَمُونَ

know

yaʿlamūna

٥٧

And they [i.e., the Quraysh] say, "If we were to follow the guidance with you, we would be swept1 from our land." Have We not established for them a safe sanctuary to which are brought the fruits of all things as provision from Us? But most of them do not know.

— Saheeh International

وَكَمْ

And how many

wakam

أَهْلَكْنَا

We have destroyed

ahlaknā

مِن

of

min

قَرْيَةٍۭ

a town

qaryatin

بَطِرَتْ

which exulted

baṭirat

مَعِيشَتَهَا ۖ

(in) its means of livelihood

maʿīshatahā

فَتِلْكَ

And these

fatil'ka

مَسَـٰكِنُهُمْ

(are) their dwellings

masākinuhum

لَمْ

not

lam

تُسْكَن

have been inhabited

tus'kan

مِّنۢ

after them

min

بَعْدِهِمْ

after them

baʿdihim

إِلَّا

except

illā

قَلِيلًۭا ۖ

a little

qalīlan

وَكُنَّا

And indeed, [We]

wakunnā

نَحْنُ

We

naḥnu

ٱلْوَٰرِثِينَ

(are) the inheritors

l-wārithīna

٥٨

And how many a city have We destroyed that was insolent in its [way of] living, and those are their dwellings which have not been inhabited after them except briefly.1 And it is We who were the inheritors.

— Saheeh International

وَمَا

And not

wamā

كَانَ

was

kāna

رَبُّكَ

your Lord

rabbuka

مُهْلِكَ

(the) one to destroy

muh'lika

ٱلْقُرَىٰ

the towns

l-qurā

حَتَّىٰ

until

ḥattā

يَبْعَثَ

He (had) sent

yabʿatha

فِىٓ

in

أُمِّهَا

their mother (town)

ummihā

رَسُولًۭا

a Messenger

rasūlan

يَتْلُوا۟

reciting

yatlū

عَلَيْهِمْ

to them

ʿalayhim

ءَايَـٰتِنَا ۚ

Our Verses

āyātinā

وَمَا

And not

wamā

كُنَّا

We would be

kunnā

مُهْلِكِى

(the) one to destroy

muh'likī

ٱلْقُرَىٰٓ

the towns

l-qurā

إِلَّا

except

illā

وَأَهْلُهَا

while their people

wa-ahluhā

ظَـٰلِمُونَ

(were) wrongdoers

ẓālimūna

٥٩

And never would your Lord have destroyed the cities until He had sent to their mother [i.e., principal city] a messenger reciting to them Our verses. And We would not destroy the cities except while their people were wrongdoers.

— Saheeh International
