۞ وَلَقَدْ And indeed walaqad We have conveyed waṣṣalnā to them lahumu the Word l-qawla so that they may laʿallahum remember yatadhakkarūna
And We have [repeatedly] conveyed to them the word [i.e., the Qur’ān] that they might be reminded.
ٱلَّذِينَ Those who alladhīna We gave them ātaynāhumu the Scripture l-kitāba before it min before it qablihi they hum in it bihi believe yu'minūna
Those to whom We gave the Scripture before it - they1 are believers in it.
وَإِذَا And when wa-idhā it is recited yut'lā to them ʿalayhim they say qālū We believe āmannā in it bihi Indeed, it innahu (is) the truth l-ḥaqu from min our Lord rabbinā Indeed, we innā [we] were kunnā before it min before it qablihi Muslims mus'limīna
And when it is recited to them, they say, "We have believed in it; indeed, it is the truth from our Lord. Indeed we were, [even] before it, Muslims [i.e., submitting to Allāh]."
أُو۟لَـٰٓئِكَ Those ulāika will be given yu'tawna their reward ajrahum twice marratayni because bimā they are patient ṣabarū and they repel wayadraūna with good bil-ḥasanati the evil l-sayi-ata and from what wamimmā We have provided them razaqnāhum they spend yunfiqūna
Those will be given their reward twice for what they patiently endured and [because] they avert evil through good, and from what We have provided them they spend.
وَإِذَا And when wa-idhā they hear samiʿū vain talk l-laghwa they turn away aʿraḍū from it ʿanhu and say waqālū For us lanā our deeds aʿmālunā and for you walakum your deeds aʿmālukum Peace (be) salāmun on you ʿalaykum not lā we seek nabtaghī the ignorant l-jāhilīna
And when they hear ill speech, they turn away from it and say, "For us are our deeds, and for you are your deeds. Peace will be upon you;1 we seek not the ignorant."
إِنَّكَ Indeed, you innaka (can) not lā guide tahdī whom man you love aḥbabta but walākinna Allah l-laha guides yahdī whom man He wills yashāu And He wahuwa (is) most knowing aʿlamu (of) the guided ones bil-muh'tadīna
Indeed, [O Muḥammad], you do not guide whom you like, but Allāh guides whom He wills. And He is most knowing of the [rightly] guided.
وَقَالُوٓا۟ And they say waqālū If in we follow nattabiʿi the guidance l-hudā with you maʿaka we would be swept nutakhaṭṭaf from min our land arḍinā Have not awalam We established numakkin for them lahum a sanctuary ḥaraman secure āminan are brought yuj'bā to it ilayhi fruits thamarātu (of) all kulli things shayin a provision riz'qan from min Us ladunnā But walākinna most of them aktharahum (do) not lā know yaʿlamūna
And they [i.e., the Quraysh] say, "If we were to follow the guidance with you, we would be swept1 from our land." Have We not established for them a safe sanctuary to which are brought the fruits of all things as provision from Us? But most of them do not know.
وَكَمْ And how many wakam We have destroyed ahlaknā of min a town qaryatin which exulted baṭirat (in) its means of livelihood maʿīshatahā And these fatil'ka (are) their dwellings masākinuhum not lam have been inhabited tus'kan after them min after them baʿdihim except illā a little qalīlan And indeed, [We] wakunnā We naḥnu (are) the inheritors l-wārithīna
And how many a city have We destroyed that was insolent in its [way of] living, and those are their dwellings which have not been inhabited after them except briefly.1 And it is We who were the inheritors.
وَمَا And not wamā was kāna your Lord rabbuka (the) one to destroy muh'lika the towns l-qurā until ḥattā He (had) sent yabʿatha in fī their mother (town) ummihā a Messenger rasūlan reciting yatlū to them ʿalayhim Our Verses āyātinā And not wamā We would be kunnā (the) one to destroy muh'likī the towns l-qurā except illā while their people wa-ahluhā (were) wrongdoers ẓālimūna
And never would your Lord have destroyed the cities until He had sent to their mother [i.e., principal city] a messenger reciting to them Our verses. And We would not destroy the cities except while their people were wrongdoers.
