وَمَا

And not

wamā

كُنتَ

you were

kunta

بِجَانِبِ

on (the) side

bijānibi

ٱلْغَرْبِىِّ

western

l-gharbiyi

إِذْ

when

idh

قَضَيْنَآ

We decreed

qaḍaynā

إِلَىٰ

to

ilā

مُوسَى

Musa

mūsā

ٱلْأَمْرَ

the Commandment

l-amra

وَمَا

and not

wamā

كُنتَ

you were

kunta

مِنَ

among

mina

ٱلشَّـٰهِدِينَ

the witnesses

l-shāhidīna

٤٤

And you, [O Muḥammad], were not on the western side [of the mount] when We revealed to Moses the command, and you were not among the witnesses [to that].

— Saheeh International

وَلَـٰكِنَّآ

But We

walākinnā

أَنشَأْنَا

[We] produced

anshanā

قُرُونًۭا

generations

qurūnan

فَتَطَاوَلَ

and prolonged

fataṭāwala

عَلَيْهِمُ

for them

ʿalayhimu

ٱلْعُمُرُ ۚ

the life

l-ʿumuru

وَمَا

And not

wamā

كُنتَ

you were

kunta

ثَاوِيًۭا

a dweller

thāwiyan

فِىٓ

among

أَهْلِ

(the) people

ahli

مَدْيَنَ

(of) Madyan

madyana

تَتْلُوا۟

reciting

tatlū

عَلَيْهِمْ

to them

ʿalayhim

ءَايَـٰتِنَا

Our Verses

āyātinā

وَلَـٰكِنَّا

but We

walākinnā

كُنَّا

[We] were

kunnā

مُرْسِلِينَ

the Senders

mur'silīna

٤٥

But We produced [many] generations [after Moses], and prolonged was their duration.1 And you were not a resident among the people of Madyan, reciting to them Our verses, but We were senders [of this message].2

— Saheeh International

وَمَا

And not

wamā

كُنتَ

you were

kunta

بِجَانِبِ

at (the) side

bijānibi

ٱلطُّورِ

(of) the Tur

l-ṭūri

إِذْ

when

idh

نَادَيْنَا

We called

nādaynā

وَلَـٰكِن

But

walākin

رَّحْمَةًۭ

(as) a mercy

raḥmatan

مِّن

from

min

رَّبِّكَ

your Lord

rabbika

لِتُنذِرَ

so that you warn

litundhira

قَوْمًۭا

a people

qawman

مَّآ

not

أَتَىٰهُم

(had) come to them

atāhum

مِّن

any

min

نَّذِيرٍۢ

warner

nadhīrin

مِّن

before you

min

قَبْلِكَ

before you

qablika

لَعَلَّهُمْ

so that they may

laʿallahum

يَتَذَكَّرُونَ

remember

yatadhakkarūna

٤٦

And you were not at the side of the mount when We called [Moses] but [were sent] as a mercy from your Lord to warn a people to whom no warner had come before you that they might be reminded.

— Saheeh International

وَلَوْلَآ

And if not

walawlā

أَن

[that]

an

تُصِيبَهُم

struck them

tuṣībahum

مُّصِيبَةٌۢ

a disaster

muṣībatun

بِمَا

for what

bimā

قَدَّمَتْ

had sent forth

qaddamat

أَيْدِيهِمْ

their hands

aydīhim

فَيَقُولُوا۟

and they would say

fayaqūlū

رَبَّنَا

Our Lord

rabbanā

لَوْلَآ

Why not

lawlā

أَرْسَلْتَ

You sent

arsalta

إِلَيْنَا

to us

ilaynā

رَسُولًۭا

a Messenger

rasūlan

فَنَتَّبِعَ

so we (could have) followed

fanattabiʿa

ءَايَـٰتِكَ

Your Verses

āyātika

وَنَكُونَ

and we (would) have been

wanakūna

مِنَ

of

mina

ٱلْمُؤْمِنِينَ

the believers

l-mu'minīna

٤٧

And if not that a disaster should strike them for what their hands put forth [of sins] and they would say, "Our Lord, why did You not send us a messenger so we could have followed Your verses and been among the believers?"...1

— Saheeh International

فَلَمَّا

But when

falammā

جَآءَهُمُ

came to them

jāahumu

ٱلْحَقُّ

the truth

l-ḥaqu

مِنْ

from Us

min

عِندِنَا

from Us

ʿindinā

قَالُوا۟

they said

qālū

لَوْلَآ

Why not

lawlā

أُوتِىَ

he was given

ūtiya

مِثْلَ

(the) like

mith'la

مَآ

(of) what

أُوتِىَ

was given

ūtiya

مُوسَىٰٓ ۚ

(to) Musa

mūsā

أَوَلَمْ

Did not

awalam

يَكْفُرُوا۟

they disbelieve

yakfurū

بِمَآ

in what

bimā

أُوتِىَ

was given

ūtiya

مُوسَىٰ

(to) Musa

mūsā

مِن

before

min

قَبْلُ ۖ

before

qablu

قَالُوا۟

They said

qālū

سِحْرَانِ

Two magic (works)

siḥ'rāni

تَظَـٰهَرَا

supporting each other

taẓāharā

وَقَالُوٓا۟

And they said

waqālū

إِنَّا

Indeed, we

innā

بِكُلٍّۢ

in all

bikullin

كَـٰفِرُونَ

(are) disbelievers

kāfirūna

٤٨

But when the truth came to them from Us, they said, "Why was he not given like that which was given to Moses?" Did they not disbelieve in that which was given to Moses before? They said, "[They are but] two works of magic supporting each other,1 and indeed we are, in both, disbelievers."

— Saheeh International

قُلْ

Say

qul

فَأْتُوا۟

Then bring

fatū

بِكِتَـٰبٍۢ

a Book

bikitābin

مِّنْ

from Allah

min

عِندِ

from Allah

ʿindi

ٱللَّهِ

from Allah

l-lahi

هُوَ

which

huwa

أَهْدَىٰ

(is) a better guide

ahdā

مِنْهُمَآ

than both of them

min'humā

أَتَّبِعْهُ

that I may follow it

attabiʿ'hu

إِن

if

in

كُنتُمْ

you are

kuntum

صَـٰدِقِينَ

truthful

ṣādiqīna

٤٩

Say, "Then bring a scripture from Allāh which is more guiding than either of them that I may follow it, if you should be truthful."

— Saheeh International

فَإِن

But if

fa-in

لَّمْ

not

lam

يَسْتَجِيبُوا۟

they respond

yastajībū

لَكَ

to you

laka

فَٱعْلَمْ

then know

fa-iʿ'lam

أَنَّمَا

that only

annamā

يَتَّبِعُونَ

they follow

yattabiʿūna

أَهْوَآءَهُمْ ۚ

their desires

ahwāahum

وَمَنْ

And who

waman

أَضَلُّ

(is) more astray

aḍallu

مِمَّنِ

than (one) who

mimmani

ٱتَّبَعَ

follows

ittabaʿa

هَوَىٰهُ

his own desire

hawāhu

بِغَيْرِ

without

bighayri

هُدًۭى

guidance

hudan

مِّنَ

from

mina

ٱللَّهِ ۚ

Allah

l-lahi

إِنَّ

Indeed

inna

ٱللَّهَ

Allah

l-laha

لَا

(does) not

يَهْدِى

guide

yahdī

ٱلْقَوْمَ

the people

l-qawma

ٱلظَّـٰلِمِينَ

the wrongdoers

l-ẓālimīna

٥٠

But if they do not respond to you - then know that they only follow their [own] desires. And who is more astray than one who follows his desire without guidance from Allāh? Indeed, Allāh does not guide the wrongdoing people.

— Saheeh International
