إِنَّ Indeed inna those who alladhīna brought jāū the lie bil-if'ki (are) a group ʿuṣ'batun among you minkum (Do) not lā think it taḥsabūhu bad sharran for you lakum nay bal it huwa (is) good khayrun for you lakum For every likulli person im'ri-in among them min'hum (is) what mā he earned ik'tasaba of mina the sin l-ith'mi and the one who wa-alladhī took upon himself a greater share of it tawallā took upon himself a greater share of it kib'rahu among them min'hum for him lahu (is) a punishment ʿadhābun great ʿaẓīmun
Indeed, those who came with falsehood1 are a group among you. Do not think it bad for you; rather, it is good for you. For every person among them is what [punishment] he has earned from the sin, and he who took upon himself the greater portion thereof2 - for him is a great punishment [i.e., Hellfire].
لَّوْلَآ Why not lawlā when idh you heard it samiʿ'tumūhu think ẓanna the believing men l-mu'minūna and the believing women wal-mu'minātu good of themselves bi-anfusihim good of themselves khayran and say waqālū This hādhā (is) a lie if'kun clear mubīnun
Why, when you heard it, did not the believing men and believing women think good of themselves [i.e., one another] and say, "This is an obvious falsehood"?
لَّوْلَا Why (did) not lawlā they bring jāū for it ʿalayhi four bi-arbaʿati witnesses shuhadāa Then when fa-idh not lam they brought yatū the witnesses bil-shuhadāi then those fa-ulāika near Allah ʿinda near Allah l-lahi they humu (are) the liars l-kādhibūna
Why did they [who slandered] not produce for it four witnesses? And when they do not produce the witnesses, then it is they, in the sight of Allāh, who are the liars.
وَلَوْلَا And if not walawlā (for the) Grace faḍlu (of) Allah l-lahi upon you ʿalaykum and His Mercy waraḥmatuhu in fī the world l-dun'yā and the Hereafter wal-ākhirati surely would have touched you lamassakum in fī what mā you had rushed glibly afaḍtum concerning it fīhi a punishment ʿadhābun great ʿaẓīmun
And if it had not been for the favor of Allāh upon you and His mercy in this world and the Hereafter, you would have been touched for that [lie] in which you were involved by a great punishment
إِذْ When idh you received it talaqqawnahu with your tongues bi-alsinatikum and you said wataqūlūna with your mouths bi-afwāhikum what mā not laysa for you lakum of it bihi any knowledge ʿil'mun and you thought it wataḥsabūnahu (was) insignificant hayyinan while it wahuwa (was) near Allah ʿinda (was) near Allah l-lahi great ʿaẓīmun
When you received it with your tongues1 and said with your mouths that of which you had no knowledge and thought it was insignificant while it was, in the sight of Allāh, tremendous.
وَلَوْلَآ And why not walawlā when idh you heard it samiʿ'tumūhu you said qul'tum Not mā it is yakūnu for us lanā that an we speak natakallama of this bihādhā Glory be to You sub'ḥānaka This hādhā (is) a slander buh'tānun great ʿaẓīmun
And why, when you heard it, did you not say, "It is not for us to speak of this. Exalted are You, [O Allāh]; this is a great slander"?
يَعِظُكُمُ Allah warns you yaʿiẓukumu Allah warns you l-lahu that an you return taʿūdū (to the) like of it limith'lihi ever abadan if in you are kuntum believers mu'minīna
Allāh warns you against returning to the likes of this [conduct], ever, if you should be believers.
وَيُبَيِّنُ And Allah makes clear wayubayyinu And Allah makes clear l-lahu to you lakumu the Verses l-āyāti And Allah wal-lahu (is) All-Knower ʿalīmun All-Wise ḥakīmun
And Allāh makes clear to you the verses [i.e., His rulings], and Allāh is Knowing and Wise.
إِنَّ Indeed inna those who alladhīna like yuḥibbūna that an (should) spread tashīʿa the immorality l-fāḥishatu among fī those who alladhīna believe āmanū for them lahum (is) a punishment ʿadhābun painful alīmun in fī the world l-dun'yā and the Hereafter wal-ākhirati And Allah wal-lahu knows yaʿlamu while you wa-antum (do) not lā know taʿlamūna
Indeed, those who like that immorality1 should be spread [or publicized] among those who have believed will have a painful punishment in this world and the Hereafter. And Allāh knows2 and you do not know.
وَلَوْلَا And if not walawlā (for the) Grace of Allah faḍlu (for the) Grace of Allah l-lahi upon you ʿalaykum and His Mercy waraḥmatuhu And that wa-anna Allah l-laha (is) Full of Kindness raūfun Most Merciful raḥīmun
And if it had not been for the favor of Allāh upon you and His mercy...1 and because Allāh is Kind and Merciful.
