The Light

النور
سُورَةٌ A Surah sūratun We (have) sent it down anzalnāhā and We (have) made it obligatory wafaraḍnāhā and We (have) revealed wa-anzalnā therein fīhā Verses āyātin clear bayyinātin so that you may laʿallakum take heed tadhakkarūna
[This is] a sūrah which We have sent down and made [that within it] obligatory and revealed therein verses of clear evidence that you might remember.
ٱلزَّانِيَةُ The fornicatress al-zāniyatu and the fornicator wal-zānī [then] flog fa-ij'lidū each kulla one wāḥidin of them min'humā (with) hundred mi-ata lash(es) jaldatin And (let) not walā withhold you takhudh'kum pity for them bihimā pity for them rafatun concerning fī (the) religion of Allah dīni (the) religion of Allah l-lahi if in you kuntum believe tu'minūna in Allah bil-lahi and the Day wal-yawmi the Last l-ākhiri And let witness walyashhad their punishment ʿadhābahumā a group ṭāifatun of mina the believers l-mu'minīna
The [unmarried] woman or [unmarried] man found guilty of sexual intercourse1 - lash each one of them with a hundred lashes,2 and do not be taken by pity for them in the religion [i.e., law] of Allāh,3 if you should believe in Allāh and the Last Day. And let a group of the believers witness their punishment.
ٱلزَّانِى The fornicator al-zānī (will) not lā marry yankiḥu except illā a fornicatress zāniyatan or aw a polytheist woman mush'rikatan and the fornicatress wal-zāniyatu (will) not lā marry her yankiḥuhā except illā a fornicator zānin or aw a polytheist man mush'rikun And is forbidden waḥurrima that dhālika to ʿalā the believers l-mu'minīna
The fornicator does not marry except a [female] fornicator or polytheist, and none marries her except a fornicator1 or a polytheist, and that [i.e., marriage to such persons] has been made unlawful to the believers.
وَٱلَّذِينَ And those who wa-alladhīna accuse yarmūna the chaste women l-muḥ'ṣanāti then thumma not lam they bring yatū four bi-arbaʿati witnesses shuhadāa then flog them fa-ij'lidūhum (with) eighty thamānīna lashe(s) jaldatan and (do) not walā accept taqbalū their lahum testimony shahādatan ever abadan And those wa-ulāika they humu (are) the defiantly disobedient l-fāsiqūna
And those who accuse chaste women and then do not produce four witnesses - lash them with eighty lashes and do not accept from them testimony ever after. And those are the defiantly disobedient,
إِلَّا Except illā those who alladhīna repent tābū after min after baʿdi that dhālika and reform wa-aṣlaḥū Then indeed fa-inna Allah l-laha (is) Oft-Forgiving ghafūrun Most Merciful raḥīmun
Except for those who repent thereafter and reform, for indeed, Allāh is Forgiving and Merciful.
وَٱلَّذِينَ And those who wa-alladhīna accuse yarmūna their spouses azwājahum and not walam have yakun for them lahum witnesses shuhadāu except illā themselves anfusuhum then (the) testimony fashahādatu (of) one of them aḥadihim (is) four arbaʿu testimonies shahādātin by Allah bil-lahi that he innahu (is) surely of lamina the truthful l-ṣādiqīna
And those who accuse their wives [of adultery] and have no witnesses except themselves - then the witness of one of them1 [shall be] four testimonies [swearing] by Allāh that indeed, he is of the truthful.
وَٱلْخَـٰمِسَةُ And the fifth wal-khāmisatu that anna (the) curse of Allah laʿnata (the) curse of Allah l-lahi (be) upon him ʿalayhi if in he is kāna of mina the liars l-kādhibīna
And the fifth [oath will be] that the curse of Allāh be upon him if he should be of the liars.
وَيَدْرَؤُا۟ But it would prevent wayadra-u from her ʿanhā the punishment l-ʿadhāba that an she bears witness tashhada four arbaʿa testimonies shahādātin by Allah bil-lahi that he innahu (is) surely of lamina the liars l-kādhibīna
But it will prevent punishment from her if she gives four testimonies [swearing] by Allāh that indeed, he is of the liars.
وَٱلْخَـٰمِسَةَ And the fifth wal-khāmisata that anna the wrath of Allah ghaḍaba the wrath of Allah l-lahi (be) upon her ʿalayhā if in he is kāna of mina the truthful l-ṣādiqīna
And the fifth [oath will be] that the wrath of Allāh be upon her if he was of the truthful.
وَلَوْلَا And if not walawlā (for) the Grace of Allah faḍlu (for) the Grace of Allah l-lahi upon you ʿalaykum and His Mercy waraḥmatuhu and that wa-anna Allah l-laha (is) Oft-Returning (to Mercy) tawwābun All-Wise ḥakīmun
And if not for the favor of Allāh upon you and His mercy...1 and because Allāh is Accepting of Repentance and Wise.
