فَتَعَـٰلَى So high (above all) fataʿālā (is) Allah l-lahu the King l-maliku the True l-ḥaqu And (do) not walā hasten taʿjal with the Quran bil-qur'āni before min before qabli [that] an is completed yuq'ḍā to you ilayka its revelation waḥyuhu and say waqul My Lord rabbi Increase me zid'nī (in) knowledge ʿil'man
So high [above all] is Allāh, the Sovereign,1 the Truth.2 And, [O Muḥammad], do not hasten with [recitation of] the Qur’ān before its revelation is completed to you, and say, "My Lord, increase me in knowledge."
وَلَقَدْ And verily walaqad We made a covenant ʿahid'nā with ilā Adam ādama before min before qablu but he forgot fanasiya and not walam We found najid in him lahu determination ʿazman
And We had already taken a promise from Adam before, but he forgot; and We found not in him determination.1
وَإِذْ And when wa-idh We said qul'nā to the Angels lil'malāikati Prostrate us'judū to Adam liādama then they prostrated fasajadū except illā Iblis ib'līsa he refused abā
And [mention] when We said to the angels, "Prostrate to Adam," and they prostrated, except Iblees;1 he refused.
فَقُلْنَا Then We said faqul'nā O Adam yāādamu Indeed inna this hādhā (is) an enemy ʿaduwwun to you laka and to your wife walizawjika So not falā (let) him drive you both yukh'rijannakumā from mina Paradise l-janati so (that) you would suffer fatashqā
So We said, "O Adam, indeed this is an enemy to you and to your wife. Then let him not remove you from Paradise so you would suffer.
إِنَّ Indeed inna for you laka that not allā you will be hungry tajūʿa therein fīhā and not walā you will be unclothed taʿrā
Indeed, it is [promised] for you not to be hungry therein or be unclothed.
وَأَنَّكَ And that you wa-annaka not lā will suffer from thirst taẓma-u therein fīhā and not walā exposed to the sun's heat taḍḥā
And indeed, you will not be thirsty therein or be hot from the sun."
فَوَسْوَسَ Then whispered fawaswasa to him ilayhi Shaitaan l-shayṭānu he said qāla O Adam yāādamu Shall hal I direct you adulluka to ʿalā (the) tree shajarati (of) the Eternity l-khul'di and a kingdom wamul'kin not lā (that will) deteriorate yablā
Then Satan whispered to him; he said, "O Adam, shall I direct you to the tree of eternity and possession that will not deteriorate?"
فَأَكَلَا Then they both ate fa-akalā from it min'hā so became apparent fabadat to them lahumā their shame sawātuhumā and they began waṭafiqā (to) fasten yakhṣifāni on themselves ʿalayhimā from min (the) leaves waraqi (of) Paradise l-janati And Adam disobeyed waʿaṣā And Adam disobeyed ādamu his Lord rabbahu and erred faghawā
And they [i.e., Adam and his wife] ate of it, and their private parts became apparent to them, and they began to fasten over themselves from the leaves of Paradise. And Adam disobeyed his Lord and erred.
ثُمَّ Then thumma chose him ij'tabāhu his Lord rabbuhu and turned fatāba to him ʿalayhi and guided (him) wahadā
Then his Lord chose him and turned to him in forgiveness and guided [him].
قَالَ He said qāla Go down ih'biṭā from it min'hā all jamīʿan some of you baʿḍukum to others libaʿḍin (as) enemy ʿaduwwun Then if fa-immā comes to you yatiyannakum from Me minnī guidance hudan then whoever famani follows ittabaʿa My guidance hudāya then not falā he will go astray yaḍillu and not walā suffer yashqā
[Allāh] said, "Descend from it [i.e., Paradise] - all, [your descendants] being enemies to one another. And if there should come to you guidance from Me - then whoever follows My guidance will neither go astray [in the world] nor suffer [in the Hereafter].
وَمَنْ And whoever waman turns away aʿraḍa from ʿan My remembrance dhik'rī then indeed fa-inna for him lahu (is) a life maʿīshatan straitened ḍankan and We will gather him wanaḥshuruhu (on the) Day yawma (of) the Resurrection l-qiyāmati blind aʿmā
And whoever turns away from My remembrance - indeed, he will have a depressed [i.e., difficult] life, and We will gather [i.e., raise] him on the Day of Resurrection blind."
قَالَ He will say qāla My Lord rabbi Why lima You raised me ḥashartanī blind aʿmā while [verily] waqad I had kuntu sight baṣīran
He will say, "My Lord, why have you raised me blind while I was [once] seeing?"
