فَتَعَـٰلَى

So high (above all)

fataʿālā

ٱللَّهُ

(is) Allah

l-lahu

ٱلْمَلِكُ

the King

l-maliku

ٱلْحَقُّ ۗ

the True

l-ḥaqu

وَلَا

And (do) not

walā

تَعْجَلْ

hasten

taʿjal

بِٱلْقُرْءَانِ

with the Quran

bil-qur'āni

مِن

before

min

قَبْلِ

before

qabli

أَن

[that]

an

يُقْضَىٰٓ

is completed

yuq'ḍā

إِلَيْكَ

to you

ilayka

وَحْيُهُۥ ۖ

its revelation

waḥyuhu

وَقُل

and say

waqul

رَّبِّ

My Lord

rabbi

زِدْنِى

Increase me

zid'nī

عِلْمًۭا

(in) knowledge

ʿil'man

١١٤

So high [above all] is Allāh, the Sovereign,1 the Truth.2 And, [O Muḥammad], do not hasten with [recitation of] the Qur’ān before its revelation is completed to you, and say, "My Lord, increase me in knowledge."

— Saheeh International

وَلَقَدْ

And verily

walaqad

عَهِدْنَآ

We made a covenant

ʿahid'nā

إِلَىٰٓ

with

ilā

ءَادَمَ

Adam

ādama

مِن

before

min

قَبْلُ

before

qablu

فَنَسِىَ

but he forgot

fanasiya

وَلَمْ

and not

walam

نَجِدْ

We found

najid

لَهُۥ

in him

lahu

عَزْمًۭا

determination

ʿazman

١١٥

And We had already taken a promise from Adam before, but he forgot; and We found not in him determination.1

— Saheeh International

وَإِذْ

And when

wa-idh

قُلْنَا

We said

qul'nā

لِلْمَلَـٰٓئِكَةِ

to the Angels

lil'malāikati

ٱسْجُدُوا۟

Prostrate

us'judū

لِـَٔادَمَ

to Adam

liādama

فَسَجَدُوٓا۟

then they prostrated

fasajadū

إِلَّآ

except

illā

إِبْلِيسَ

Iblis

ib'līsa

أَبَىٰ

he refused

abā

١١٦

And [mention] when We said to the angels, "Prostrate to Adam," and they prostrated, except Iblees;1 he refused.

— Saheeh International

فَقُلْنَا

Then We said

faqul'nā

يَـٰٓـَٔادَمُ

O Adam

yāādamu

إِنَّ

Indeed

inna

هَـٰذَا

this

hādhā

عَدُوٌّۭ

(is) an enemy

ʿaduwwun

لَّكَ

to you

laka

وَلِزَوْجِكَ

and to your wife

walizawjika

فَلَا

So not

falā

يُخْرِجَنَّكُمَا

(let) him drive you both

yukh'rijannakumā

مِنَ

from

mina

ٱلْجَنَّةِ

Paradise

l-janati

فَتَشْقَىٰٓ

so (that) you would suffer

fatashqā

١١٧

So We said, "O Adam, indeed this is an enemy to you and to your wife. Then let him not remove you from Paradise so you would suffer.

— Saheeh International

إِنَّ

Indeed

inna

لَكَ

for you

laka

أَلَّا

that not

allā

تَجُوعَ

you will be hungry

tajūʿa

فِيهَا

therein

fīhā

وَلَا

and not

walā

تَعْرَىٰ

you will be unclothed

taʿrā

١١٨

Indeed, it is [promised] for you not to be hungry therein or be unclothed.

— Saheeh International

وَأَنَّكَ

And that you

wa-annaka

لَا

not

تَظْمَؤُا۟

will suffer from thirst

taẓma-u

فِيهَا

therein

fīhā

وَلَا

and not

walā

تَضْحَىٰ

exposed to the sun's heat

taḍḥā

١١٩

And indeed, you will not be thirsty therein or be hot from the sun."

— Saheeh International

فَوَسْوَسَ

Then whispered

fawaswasa

إِلَيْهِ

to him

ilayhi

ٱلشَّيْطَـٰنُ

Shaitaan

l-shayṭānu

قَالَ

he said

qāla

يَـٰٓـَٔادَمُ

O Adam

yāādamu

هَلْ

Shall

hal

أَدُلُّكَ

I direct you

adulluka

عَلَىٰ

to

ʿalā

شَجَرَةِ

(the) tree

shajarati

ٱلْخُلْدِ

(of) the Eternity

l-khul'di

وَمُلْكٍۢ

and a kingdom

wamul'kin

لَّا

not

يَبْلَىٰ

(that will) deteriorate

yablā

١٢٠

Then Satan whispered to him; he said, "O Adam, shall I direct you to the tree of eternity and possession that will not deteriorate?"

— Saheeh International

فَأَكَلَا

Then they both ate

fa-akalā

مِنْهَا

from it

min'hā

فَبَدَتْ

so became apparent

fabadat

لَهُمَا

to them

lahumā

سَوْءَٰتُهُمَا

their shame

sawātuhumā

وَطَفِقَا

and they began

waṭafiqā

يَخْصِفَانِ

(to) fasten

yakhṣifāni

عَلَيْهِمَا

on themselves

ʿalayhimā

مِن

from

min

وَرَقِ

(the) leaves

waraqi

ٱلْجَنَّةِ ۚ

(of) Paradise

l-janati

وَعَصَىٰٓ

And Adam disobeyed

waʿaṣā

ءَادَمُ

And Adam disobeyed

ādamu

رَبَّهُۥ

his Lord

rabbahu

فَغَوَىٰ

and erred

faghawā

١٢١

And they [i.e., Adam and his wife] ate of it, and their private parts became apparent to them, and they began to fasten over themselves from the leaves of Paradise. And Adam disobeyed his Lord and erred.

— Saheeh International

ثُمَّ

Then

thumma

ٱجْتَبَـٰهُ

chose him

ij'tabāhu

رَبُّهُۥ

his Lord

rabbuhu

فَتَابَ

and turned

fatāba

عَلَيْهِ

to him

ʿalayhi

وَهَدَىٰ

and guided (him)

wahadā

١٢٢

Then his Lord chose him and turned to him in forgiveness and guided [him].

— Saheeh International

قَالَ

He said

qāla

ٱهْبِطَا

Go down

ih'biṭā

مِنْهَا

from it

min'hā

جَمِيعًۢا ۖ

all

jamīʿan

بَعْضُكُمْ

some of you

baʿḍukum

لِبَعْضٍ

to others

libaʿḍin

عَدُوٌّۭ ۖ

(as) enemy

ʿaduwwun

فَإِمَّا

Then if

fa-immā

يَأْتِيَنَّكُم

comes to you

yatiyannakum

مِّنِّى

from Me

minnī

هُدًۭى

guidance

hudan

فَمَنِ

then whoever

famani

ٱتَّبَعَ

follows

ittabaʿa

هُدَاىَ

My guidance

hudāya

فَلَا

then not

falā

يَضِلُّ

he will go astray

yaḍillu

وَلَا

and not

walā

يَشْقَىٰ

suffer

yashqā

١٢٣

[Allāh] said, "Descend from it [i.e., Paradise] - all, [your descendants] being enemies to one another. And if there should come to you guidance from Me - then whoever follows My guidance will neither go astray [in the world] nor suffer [in the Hereafter].

— Saheeh International

وَمَنْ

And whoever

waman

أَعْرَضَ

turns away

aʿraḍa

عَن

from

ʿan

ذِكْرِى

My remembrance

dhik'rī

فَإِنَّ

then indeed

fa-inna

لَهُۥ

for him

lahu

مَعِيشَةًۭ

(is) a life

maʿīshatan

ضَنكًۭا

straitened

ḍankan

وَنَحْشُرُهُۥ

and We will gather him

wanaḥshuruhu

يَوْمَ

(on the) Day

yawma

ٱلْقِيَـٰمَةِ

(of) the Resurrection

l-qiyāmati

أَعْمَىٰ

blind

aʿmā

١٢٤

And whoever turns away from My remembrance - indeed, he will have a depressed [i.e., difficult] life, and We will gather [i.e., raise] him on the Day of Resurrection blind."

— Saheeh International

قَالَ

He will say

qāla

رَبِّ

My Lord

rabbi

لِمَ

Why

lima

حَشَرْتَنِىٓ

You raised me

ḥashartanī

أَعْمَىٰ

blind

aʿmā

وَقَدْ

while [verily]

waqad

كُنتُ

I had

kuntu

بَصِيرًۭا

sight

baṣīran

١٢٥

He will say, "My Lord, why have you raised me blind while I was [once] seeing?"

— Saheeh International
