قَالَ He will say qāla Thus kadhālika came to you atatka Our Signs āyātunā but you forgot them fanasītahā and thus wakadhālika today l-yawma you will be forgotten tunsā
[Allāh] will say, "Thus did Our signs come to you, and you forgot [i.e., disregarded] them; and thus will you this Day be forgotten."
وَكَذَٰلِكَ And thus wakadhālika We recompense najzī (he) who man transgresses asrafa and not walam believes yu'min in (the) Signs biāyāti (of) his Lord rabbihi And surely (the) punishment walaʿadhābu (of) the Hereafter l-ākhirati (is) more severe ashaddu and more lasting wa-abqā
And thus do We recompense he who transgressed and did not believe in the signs of his Lord. And the punishment of the Hereafter is more severe and more enduring.1
أَفَلَمْ Then has not afalam it guided yahdi [for] them lahum how many kam We (have) destroyed ahlaknā before them qablahum of mina the generations l-qurūni (as) they walk yamshūna in fī their dwellings masākinihim Indeed inna in fī that dhālika surely (are) Signs laāyātin for possessors li-ulī (of) intelligence l-nuhā
Then, has it not become clear to them how many generations We destroyed before them as they walk among their dwellings? Indeed in that are signs for those of intelligence.
وَلَوْلَا And if not walawlā (for) a Word kalimatun (that) preceded sabaqat from min your Lord rabbika surely (would) have been lakāna an obligation lizāman and a term wa-ajalun determined musamman
And if not for a word1 that preceded from your Lord, it [i.e., punishment] would have been an obligation [due immediately],2 and [if not for] a specified term [decreed].
فَٱصْبِرْ So be patient fa-iṣ'bir over ʿalā what mā they say yaqūlūna and glorify wasabbiḥ with praise biḥamdi (of) your Lord rabbika before qabla (the) rising ṭulūʿi (of) the sun l-shamsi and before waqabla its setting ghurūbihā and from wamin (the) hours ānāi (of) the night al-layli and glorify fasabbiḥ (at the) ends wa-aṭrāfa (of) the day l-nahāri so that you may laʿallaka be satisfied tarḍā
So be patient over what they say and exalt [Allāh] with praise of your Lord before the rising of the sun and before its setting; and during periods of the night [exalt Him] and at the ends of the day, that you may be satisfied.
وَلَا And (do) not walā extend tamuddanna your eyes ʿaynayka towards ilā what mā We have given for enjoyment mattaʿnā [with it] bihi pairs azwājan of them min'hum (the) splendor zahrata (of) the life l-ḥayati (of) the world l-dun'yā that We may test them linaftinahum in it fīhi And (the) provision wariz'qu (of) your Lord rabbika (is) better khayrun and more lasting wa-abqā
And do not extend your eyes toward that by which We have given enjoyment to [some] categories of them, [its being but] the splendor of worldly life by which We test them. And the provision of your Lord is better and more enduring.
وَأْمُرْ And enjoin wamur (on) your family ahlaka the prayer bil-ṣalati and be steadfast wa-iṣ'ṭabir therein ʿalayhā Not lā We ask you nasaluka (for) provision riz'qan We naḥnu provide (for) you narzuquka and the outcome wal-ʿāqibatu (is) for the righteous[ness] lilttaqwā
And enjoin prayer upon your family [and people] and be steadfast therein. We ask you not for provision; We provide for you, and the [best] outcome is for [those of] righteousness.
وَقَالُوا۟ And they say waqālū Why not lawlā he brings us yatīnā a sign biāyatin from min his Lord rabbihi Has not awalam come to them tatihim evidence bayyinatu (of) what mā (was) in fī the Scriptures l-ṣuḥufi the former l-ūlā
And they say, "Why does he not bring us a sign from his Lord?" Has there not come to them evidence of what was in the former scriptures?1
وَلَوْ And if walaw We annā (had) destroyed them ahlaknāhum with a punishment biʿadhābin before him min before him qablihi surely they (would) have said laqālū Our Lord rabbanā why not lawlā You sent arsalta to us ilaynā a Messenger rasūlan so we (could) have followed fanattabiʿa Your signs āyātika before min before qabli [that] an we were humiliated nadhilla and disgraced wanakhzā
And if We had destroyed them with a punishment before him,1 they would have said, "Our Lord, why did You not send to us a messenger so we could have followed Your verses [i.e., teachings] before we were humiliated and disgraced?"
قُلْ Say qul Each kullun (is) waiting mutarabbiṣun so await fatarabbaṣū Then you will know fasataʿlamūna who man (are the) companions aṣḥābu (of) the way l-ṣirāṭi [the] even l-sawiyi and who wamani is guided ih'tadā
Say, "Each [of us] is waiting;1 so wait. For you will know who are the companions of the sound path and who is guided."
