قَالَ

He will say

qāla

كَذَٰلِكَ

Thus

kadhālika

أَتَتْكَ

came to you

atatka

ءَايَـٰتُنَا

Our Signs

āyātunā

فَنَسِيتَهَا ۖ

but you forgot them

fanasītahā

وَكَذَٰلِكَ

and thus

wakadhālika

ٱلْيَوْمَ

today

l-yawma

تُنسَىٰ

you will be forgotten

tunsā

١٢٦

[Allāh] will say, "Thus did Our signs come to you, and you forgot [i.e., disregarded] them; and thus will you this Day be forgotten."

— Saheeh International

وَكَذَٰلِكَ

And thus

wakadhālika

نَجْزِى

We recompense

najzī

مَنْ

(he) who

man

أَسْرَفَ

transgresses

asrafa

وَلَمْ

and not

walam

يُؤْمِنۢ

believes

yu'min

بِـَٔايَـٰتِ

in (the) Signs

biāyāti

رَبِّهِۦ ۚ

(of) his Lord

rabbihi

وَلَعَذَابُ

And surely (the) punishment

walaʿadhābu

ٱلْـَٔاخِرَةِ

(of) the Hereafter

l-ākhirati

أَشَدُّ

(is) more severe

ashaddu

وَأَبْقَىٰٓ

and more lasting

wa-abqā

١٢٧

And thus do We recompense he who transgressed and did not believe in the signs of his Lord. And the punishment of the Hereafter is more severe and more enduring.1

— Saheeh International

أَفَلَمْ

Then has not

afalam

يَهْدِ

it guided

yahdi

لَهُمْ

[for] them

lahum

كَمْ

how many

kam

أَهْلَكْنَا

We (have) destroyed

ahlaknā

قَبْلَهُم

before them

qablahum

مِّنَ

of

mina

ٱلْقُرُونِ

the generations

l-qurūni

يَمْشُونَ

(as) they walk

yamshūna

فِى

in

مَسَـٰكِنِهِمْ ۗ

their dwellings

masākinihim

إِنَّ

Indeed

inna

فِى

in

ذَٰلِكَ

that

dhālika

لَـَٔايَـٰتٍۢ

surely (are) Signs

laāyātin

لِّأُو۟لِى

for possessors

li-ulī

ٱلنُّهَىٰ

(of) intelligence

l-nuhā

١٢٨

Then, has it not become clear to them how many generations We destroyed before them as they walk among their dwellings? Indeed in that are signs for those of intelligence.

— Saheeh International

وَلَوْلَا

And if not

walawlā

كَلِمَةٌۭ

(for) a Word

kalimatun

سَبَقَتْ

(that) preceded

sabaqat

مِن

from

min

رَّبِّكَ

your Lord

rabbika

لَكَانَ

surely (would) have been

lakāna

لِزَامًۭا

an obligation

lizāman

وَأَجَلٌۭ

and a term

wa-ajalun

مُّسَمًّۭى

determined

musamman

١٢٩

And if not for a word1 that preceded from your Lord, it [i.e., punishment] would have been an obligation [due immediately],2 and [if not for] a specified term [decreed].

— Saheeh International

فَٱصْبِرْ

So be patient

fa-iṣ'bir

عَلَىٰ

over

ʿalā

مَا

what

يَقُولُونَ

they say

yaqūlūna

وَسَبِّحْ

and glorify

wasabbiḥ

بِحَمْدِ

with praise

biḥamdi

رَبِّكَ

(of) your Lord

rabbika

قَبْلَ

before

qabla

طُلُوعِ

(the) rising

ṭulūʿi

ٱلشَّمْسِ

(of) the sun

l-shamsi

وَقَبْلَ

and before

waqabla

غُرُوبِهَا ۖ

its setting

ghurūbihā

وَمِنْ

and from

wamin

ءَانَآئِ

(the) hours

ānāi

ٱلَّيْلِ

(of) the night

al-layli

فَسَبِّحْ

and glorify

fasabbiḥ

وَأَطْرَافَ

(at the) ends

wa-aṭrāfa

ٱلنَّهَارِ

(of) the day

l-nahāri

لَعَلَّكَ

so that you may

laʿallaka

تَرْضَىٰ

be satisfied

tarḍā

١٣٠

So be patient over what they say and exalt [Allāh] with praise of your Lord before the rising of the sun and before its setting; and during periods of the night [exalt Him] and at the ends of the day, that you may be satisfied.

— Saheeh International

وَلَا

And (do) not

walā

تَمُدَّنَّ

extend

tamuddanna

عَيْنَيْكَ

your eyes

ʿaynayka

إِلَىٰ

towards

ilā

مَا

what

مَتَّعْنَا

We have given for enjoyment

mattaʿnā

بِهِۦٓ

[with it]

bihi

أَزْوَٰجًۭا

pairs

azwājan

مِّنْهُمْ

of them

min'hum

زَهْرَةَ

(the) splendor

zahrata

ٱلْحَيَوٰةِ

(of) the life

l-ḥayati

ٱلدُّنْيَا

(of) the world

l-dun'yā

لِنَفْتِنَهُمْ

that We may test them

linaftinahum

فِيهِ ۚ

in it

fīhi

وَرِزْقُ

And (the) provision

wariz'qu

رَبِّكَ

(of) your Lord

rabbika

خَيْرٌۭ

(is) better

khayrun

وَأَبْقَىٰ

and more lasting

wa-abqā

١٣١

And do not extend your eyes toward that by which We have given enjoyment to [some] categories of them, [its being but] the splendor of worldly life by which We test them. And the provision of your Lord is better and more enduring.

— Saheeh International

وَأْمُرْ

And enjoin

wamur

أَهْلَكَ

(on) your family

ahlaka

بِٱلصَّلَوٰةِ

the prayer

bil-ṣalati

وَٱصْطَبِرْ

and be steadfast

wa-iṣ'ṭabir

عَلَيْهَا ۖ

therein

ʿalayhā

لَا

Not

نَسْـَٔلُكَ

We ask you

nasaluka

رِزْقًۭا ۖ

(for) provision

riz'qan

نَّحْنُ

We

naḥnu

نَرْزُقُكَ ۗ

provide (for) you

narzuquka

وَٱلْعَـٰقِبَةُ

and the outcome

wal-ʿāqibatu

لِلتَّقْوَىٰ

(is) for the righteous[ness]

lilttaqwā

١٣٢

And enjoin prayer upon your family [and people] and be steadfast therein. We ask you not for provision; We provide for you, and the [best] outcome is for [those of] righteousness.

— Saheeh International

وَقَالُوا۟

And they say

waqālū

لَوْلَا

Why not

lawlā

يَأْتِينَا

he brings us

yatīnā

بِـَٔايَةٍۢ

a sign

biāyatin

مِّن

from

min

رَّبِّهِۦٓ ۚ

his Lord

rabbihi

أَوَلَمْ

Has not

awalam

تَأْتِهِم

come to them

tatihim

بَيِّنَةُ

evidence

bayyinatu

مَا

(of) what

فِى

(was) in

ٱلصُّحُفِ

the Scriptures

l-ṣuḥufi

ٱلْأُولَىٰ

the former

l-ūlā

١٣٣

And they say, "Why does he not bring us a sign from his Lord?" Has there not come to them evidence of what was in the former scriptures?1

— Saheeh International

وَلَوْ

And if

walaw

أَنَّآ

We

annā

أَهْلَكْنَـٰهُم

(had) destroyed them

ahlaknāhum

بِعَذَابٍۢ

with a punishment

biʿadhābin

مِّن

before him

min

قَبْلِهِۦ

before him

qablihi

لَقَالُوا۟

surely they (would) have said

laqālū

رَبَّنَا

Our Lord

rabbanā

لَوْلَآ

why not

lawlā

أَرْسَلْتَ

You sent

arsalta

إِلَيْنَا

to us

ilaynā

رَسُولًۭا

a Messenger

rasūlan

فَنَتَّبِعَ

so we (could) have followed

fanattabiʿa

ءَايَـٰتِكَ

Your signs

āyātika

مِن

before

min

قَبْلِ

before

qabli

أَن

[that]

an

نَّذِلَّ

we were humiliated

nadhilla

وَنَخْزَىٰ

and disgraced

wanakhzā

١٣٤

And if We had destroyed them with a punishment before him,1 they would have said, "Our Lord, why did You not send to us a messenger so we could have followed Your verses [i.e., teachings] before we were humiliated and disgraced?"

— Saheeh International

قُلْ

Say

qul

كُلٌّۭ

Each

kullun

مُّتَرَبِّصٌۭ

(is) waiting

mutarabbiṣun

فَتَرَبَّصُوا۟ ۖ

so await

fatarabbaṣū

فَسَتَعْلَمُونَ

Then you will know

fasataʿlamūna

مَنْ

who

man

أَصْحَـٰبُ

(are the) companions

aṣḥābu

ٱلصِّرَٰطِ

(of) the way

l-ṣirāṭi

ٱلسَّوِىِّ

[the] even

l-sawiyi

وَمَنِ

and who

wamani

ٱهْتَدَىٰ

is guided

ih'tadā

١٣٥

Say, "Each [of us] is waiting;1 so wait. For you will know who are the companions of the sound path and who is guided."

— Saheeh International
