فَأَخْرَجَ Then he brought forth fa-akhraja for them lahum a calf's ʿij'lan body jasadan it had lahu a lowing sound khuwārun and they said faqālū This hādhā (is) your god ilāhukum and the god wa-ilāhu (of) Musa mūsā but he forgot fanasiya
And he extracted for them [the statue of] a calf which had a lowing sound, and they said, "This is your god and the god of Moses, but he forgot."
أَفَلَا Then, did not afalā they see yarawna that not allā it (could) return yarjiʿu to them ilayhim a word qawlan and not walā possess yamliku for them lahum any harm ḍarran and not walā any benefit nafʿan
Did they not see that it could not return to them any speech [i.e., response] and that it did not possess for them any harm or benefit?
وَلَقَدْ And verily walaqad (had) said qāla to them lahum Harun hārūnu before min before qablu O my people yāqawmi Only innamā you are being tested futintum by it bihi and indeed wa-inna your Lord rabbakumu (is) the Most Gracious l-raḥmānu so follow me fa-ittabiʿūnī and obey wa-aṭīʿū my order amrī
And Aaron had already told them before [the return of Moses], "O my people, you are only being tested by it, and indeed, your Lord is the Most Merciful, so follow me and obey my order."
قَالُوا۟ They said qālū Never lan we will cease nabraḥa being devoted to it ʿalayhi being devoted to it ʿākifīna until ḥattā returns yarjiʿa to us ilaynā Musa mūsā
They said, "We will never cease being devoted to it [i.e., the calf] until Moses returns to us."
قَالَ He said qāla O Harun yāhārūnu What mā prevented you manaʿaka when idh you saw them ra-aytahum going astray ḍallū
[Moses] said, "O Aaron, what prevented you, when you saw them going astray,
أَلَّا That not allā you follow me tattabiʿani Then, have you disobeyed afaʿaṣayta my order amrī
From following me? Then have you disobeyed my order?"
قَالَ He said qāla O son of my mother yabna-umma (Do) not lā seize (me) takhudh by my beard biliḥ'yatī and not walā by my head birasī Indeed, I innī [I] feared khashītu that an you would say taqūla You caused division farraqta between bayna (the) Children of Israel banī (the) Children of Israel is'rāīla and not walam you respect tarqub my word qawlī
[Aaron] said, "O son of my mother, do not seize [me] by my beard or by my head. Indeed, I feared that you would say, 'You caused division among the Children of Israel, and you did not observe [or await] my word.'"
قَالَ He said qāla Then what famā (is) your case khaṭbuka O Samiri yāsāmiriyyu
[Moses] said, "And what is your case, O Sāmirī?"
قَالَ He said qāla I perceived baṣur'tu what bimā not lam they perceive yabṣurū in it bihi so I took faqabaḍtu a handful qabḍatan from min (the) track athari (of) the Messenger l-rasūli then threw it fanabadhtuhā and thus wakadhālika suggested sawwalat to me lī my soul nafsī
He said, "I saw what they did not see, so I took a handful [of dust] from the track of the messenger1 and threw it,2 and thus did my soul entice me."
قَالَ He said qāla Then go fa-idh'hab And indeed fa-inna for you laka in fī the life l-ḥayati that an you will say taqūla (Do) not lā touch misāsa And indeed wa-inna for you laka (is) an appointment mawʿidan never lan you will fail to (keep) it tukh'lafahu And look wa-unẓur at ilā your god ilāhika that which alladhī you have remained ẓalta to it ʿalayhi devoted ʿākifan Surely we will burn it lanuḥarriqannahu then thumma certainly we will scatter it lanansifannahu in fī the sea l-yami (in) particles nasfan
[Moses] said, "Then go. And indeed, it is [decreed] for you in [this] life to say, 'No contact.'1 And indeed, you have an appointment [in the Hereafter] you will not fail to keep. And look at your 'god' to which you remained devoted. We will surely burn it and blow it [i.e., its ashes] into the sea with a blast.
إِنَّمَآ Only innamā your God ilāhukumu (is) Allah l-lahu the One alladhī (there is) no lā god ilāha but illā He huwa He has encompassed wasiʿa all kulla things shayin (in) knowledge ʿil'man
Your god is only Allāh, except for whom there is no deity. He has encompassed all things in knowledge."
