فَأَخْرَجَ

Then he brought forth

fa-akhraja

لَهُمْ

for them

lahum

عِجْلًۭا

a calf's

ʿij'lan

جَسَدًۭا

body

jasadan

لَّهُۥ

it had

lahu

خُوَارٌۭ

a lowing sound

khuwārun

فَقَالُوا۟

and they said

faqālū

هَـٰذَآ

This

hādhā

إِلَـٰهُكُمْ

(is) your god

ilāhukum

وَإِلَـٰهُ

and the god

wa-ilāhu

مُوسَىٰ

(of) Musa

mūsā

فَنَسِىَ

but he forgot

fanasiya

٨٨

And he extracted for them [the statue of] a calf which had a lowing sound, and they said, "This is your god and the god of Moses, but he forgot."

— Saheeh International

أَفَلَا

Then, did not

afalā

يَرَوْنَ

they see

yarawna

أَلَّا

that not

allā

يَرْجِعُ

it (could) return

yarjiʿu

إِلَيْهِمْ

to them

ilayhim

قَوْلًۭا

a word

qawlan

وَلَا

and not

walā

يَمْلِكُ

possess

yamliku

لَهُمْ

for them

lahum

ضَرًّۭا

any harm

ḍarran

وَلَا

and not

walā

نَفْعًۭا

any benefit

nafʿan

٨٩

Did they not see that it could not return to them any speech [i.e., response] and that it did not possess for them any harm or benefit?

— Saheeh International

وَلَقَدْ

And verily

walaqad

قَالَ

(had) said

qāla

لَهُمْ

to them

lahum

هَـٰرُونُ

Harun

hārūnu

مِن

before

min

قَبْلُ

before

qablu

يَـٰقَوْمِ

O my people

yāqawmi

إِنَّمَا

Only

innamā

فُتِنتُم

you are being tested

futintum

بِهِۦ ۖ

by it

bihi

وَإِنَّ

and indeed

wa-inna

رَبَّكُمُ

your Lord

rabbakumu

ٱلرَّحْمَـٰنُ

(is) the Most Gracious

l-raḥmānu

فَٱتَّبِعُونِى

so follow me

fa-ittabiʿūnī

وَأَطِيعُوٓا۟

and obey

wa-aṭīʿū

أَمْرِى

my order

amrī

٩٠

And Aaron had already told them before [the return of Moses], "O my people, you are only being tested by it, and indeed, your Lord is the Most Merciful, so follow me and obey my order."

— Saheeh International

قَالُوا۟

They said

qālū

لَن

Never

lan

نَّبْرَحَ

we will cease

nabraḥa

عَلَيْهِ

being devoted to it

ʿalayhi

عَـٰكِفِينَ

being devoted to it

ʿākifīna

حَتَّىٰ

until

ḥattā

يَرْجِعَ

returns

yarjiʿa

إِلَيْنَا

to us

ilaynā

مُوسَىٰ

Musa

mūsā

٩١

They said, "We will never cease being devoted to it [i.e., the calf] until Moses returns to us."

— Saheeh International

قَالَ

He said

qāla

يَـٰهَـٰرُونُ

O Harun

yāhārūnu

مَا

What

مَنَعَكَ

prevented you

manaʿaka

إِذْ

when

idh

رَأَيْتَهُمْ

you saw them

ra-aytahum

ضَلُّوٓا۟

going astray

ḍallū

٩٢

[Moses] said, "O Aaron, what prevented you, when you saw them going astray,

— Saheeh International

أَلَّا

That not

allā

تَتَّبِعَنِ ۖ

you follow me

tattabiʿani

أَفَعَصَيْتَ

Then, have you disobeyed

afaʿaṣayta

أَمْرِى

my order

amrī

٩٣

From following me? Then have you disobeyed my order?"

— Saheeh International

قَالَ

He said

qāla

يَبْنَؤُمَّ

O son of my mother

yabna-umma

لَا

(Do) not

تَأْخُذْ

seize (me)

takhudh

بِلِحْيَتِى

by my beard

biliḥ'yatī

وَلَا

and not

walā

بِرَأْسِىٓ ۖ

by my head

birasī

إِنِّى

Indeed, I

innī

خَشِيتُ

[I] feared

khashītu

أَن

that

an

تَقُولَ

you would say

taqūla

فَرَّقْتَ

You caused division

farraqta

بَيْنَ

between

bayna

بَنِىٓ

(the) Children of Israel

banī

إِسْرَٰٓءِيلَ

(the) Children of Israel

is'rāīla

وَلَمْ

and not

walam

تَرْقُبْ

you respect

tarqub

قَوْلِى

my word

qawlī

٩٤

[Aaron] said, "O son of my mother, do not seize [me] by my beard or by my head. Indeed, I feared that you would say, 'You caused division among the Children of Israel, and you did not observe [or await] my word.'"

— Saheeh International

قَالَ

He said

qāla

فَمَا

Then what

خَطْبُكَ

(is) your case

khaṭbuka

يَـٰسَـٰمِرِىُّ

O Samiri

yāsāmiriyyu

٩٥

[Moses] said, "And what is your case, O Sāmirī?"

— Saheeh International

قَالَ

He said

qāla

بَصُرْتُ

I perceived

baṣur'tu

بِمَا

what

bimā

لَمْ

not

lam

يَبْصُرُوا۟

they perceive

yabṣurū

بِهِۦ

in it

bihi

فَقَبَضْتُ

so I took

faqabaḍtu

قَبْضَةًۭ

a handful

qabḍatan

مِّنْ

from

min

أَثَرِ

(the) track

athari

ٱلرَّسُولِ

(of) the Messenger

l-rasūli

فَنَبَذْتُهَا

then threw it

fanabadhtuhā

وَكَذَٰلِكَ

and thus

wakadhālika

سَوَّلَتْ

suggested

sawwalat

لِى

to me

نَفْسِى

my soul

nafsī

٩٦

He said, "I saw what they did not see, so I took a handful [of dust] from the track of the messenger1 and threw it,2 and thus did my soul entice me."

— Saheeh International

قَالَ

He said

qāla

فَٱذْهَبْ

Then go

fa-idh'hab

فَإِنَّ

And indeed

fa-inna

لَكَ

for you

laka

فِى

in

ٱلْحَيَوٰةِ

the life

l-ḥayati

أَن

that

an

تَقُولَ

you will say

taqūla

لَا

(Do) not

مِسَاسَ ۖ

touch

misāsa

وَإِنَّ

And indeed

wa-inna

لَكَ

for you

laka

مَوْعِدًۭا

(is) an appointment

mawʿidan

لَّن

never

lan

تُخْلَفَهُۥ ۖ

you will fail to (keep) it

tukh'lafahu

وَٱنظُرْ

And look

wa-unẓur

إِلَىٰٓ

at

ilā

إِلَـٰهِكَ

your god

ilāhika

ٱلَّذِى

that which

alladhī

ظَلْتَ

you have remained

ẓalta

عَلَيْهِ

to it

ʿalayhi

عَاكِفًۭا ۖ

devoted

ʿākifan

لَّنُحَرِّقَنَّهُۥ

Surely we will burn it

lanuḥarriqannahu

ثُمَّ

then

thumma

لَنَنسِفَنَّهُۥ

certainly we will scatter it

lanansifannahu

فِى

in

ٱلْيَمِّ

the sea

l-yami

نَسْفًا

(in) particles

nasfan

٩٧

[Moses] said, "Then go. And indeed, it is [decreed] for you in [this] life to say, 'No contact.'1 And indeed, you have an appointment [in the Hereafter] you will not fail to keep. And look at your 'god' to which you remained devoted. We will surely burn it and blow it [i.e., its ashes] into the sea with a blast.

— Saheeh International

إِنَّمَآ

Only

innamā

إِلَـٰهُكُمُ

your God

ilāhukumu

ٱللَّهُ

(is) Allah

l-lahu

ٱلَّذِى

the One

alladhī

لَآ

(there is) no

إِلَـٰهَ

god

ilāha

إِلَّا

but

illā

هُوَ ۚ

He

huwa

وَسِعَ

He has encompassed

wasiʿa

كُلَّ

all

kulla

شَىْءٍ

things

shayin

عِلْمًۭا

(in) knowledge

ʿil'man

٩٨

Your god is only Allāh, except for whom there is no deity. He has encompassed all things in knowledge."
