وَلَقَدْ And verily walaqad We inspired awḥaynā to ilā Musa mūsā that an Travel by night asri with My slaves biʿibādī and strike fa-iḍ'rib for them lahum a path ṭarīqan in fī the sea l-baḥri dry yabasan not lā fearing takhāfu to be overtaken darakan and not walā being afraid takhshā
And We had inspired to Moses, "Travel by night with My servants and strike for them a dry path through the sea; you will not fear being overtaken [by Pharaoh] nor be afraid [of drowning]."
فَأَتْبَعَهُمْ Then followed them fa-atbaʿahum Firaun fir'ʿawnu with his forces bijunūdihi but covered them faghashiyahum from mina the sea l-yami what mā covered them ghashiyahum
So Pharaoh pursued them with his soldiers, and there covered them from the sea that which covered them,1
وَأَضَلَّ And led astray wa-aḍalla Firaun fir'ʿawnu his people qawmahu and (did) not wamā guide them hadā
And Pharaoh led his people astray and did not guide [them].
يَـٰبَنِىٓ O Children of Israel yābanī O Children of Israel is'rāīla Verily qad We delivered you anjaynākum from min your enemy ʿaduwwikum and We made a covenant with you wawāʿadnākum on (the) side jāniba (of) the Mount l-ṭūri the right l-aymana and We sent down wanazzalnā to you ʿalaykumu the Manna l-mana and the quails wal-salwā
O Children of Israel, We delivered you from your enemy, and We made an appointment with you1 at the right side of the mount, and We sent down to you manna and quails,
كُلُوا۟ Eat kulū of min (the) good things ṭayyibāti which mā We have provided you razaqnākum and (do) not walā transgress taṭghaw therein fīhi lest should descend fayaḥilla upon you ʿalaykum My Anger ghaḍabī And whoever waman on whom descends yaḥlil on whom descends ʿalayhi My Anger ghaḍabī indeed faqad he (has) perished hawā
[Saying], "Eat from the good things with which We have provided you and do not transgress [or oppress others] therein, lest My anger should descend upon you. And he upon whom My anger descends has certainly fallen [i.e., perished]."
وَإِنِّى But indeed, I Am wa-innī the Perpetual Forgiver laghaffārun of whoever liman repents tāba and believes waāmana and does waʿamila righteous (deeds) ṣāliḥan then thumma remains guided ih'tadā
But indeed, I am the Perpetual Forgiver of whoever repents and believes and does righteousness and then continues in guidance.
۞ وَمَآ And what wamā made you hasten aʿjalaka from ʿan your people qawmika O Musa yāmūsā
[Allāh said], "And what made you hasten from your people, O Moses?"
قَالَ He said qāla They hum (are) close ulāi upon ʿalā my tracks atharī and I hastened waʿajil'tu to you ilayka my Lord rabbi that You be pleased litarḍā
He said, "They are close upon my tracks, and I hastened to You, my Lord, that You be pleased."
قَالَ He said qāla But indeed, We fa-innā [verily] qad We (have) tried fatannā your people qawmaka after you min after you baʿdika and has led them astray wa-aḍallahumu the Samiri l-sāmiriyu
[Allāh] said, "But indeed, We have tried your people after you [departed], and the Sāmirī1 has led them astray."
فَرَجَعَ Then Musa returned farajaʿa Then Musa returned mūsā to ilā his people qawmihi angry ghaḍbāna (and) sorrowful asifan He said qāla O my people yāqawmi Did not alam promise you yaʿid'kum your Lord rabbukum a promise waʿdan good ḥasanan Then, did seem long afaṭāla to you ʿalaykumu the promise l-ʿahdu or am did you desire aradttum that an descend yaḥilla upon you ʿalaykum (the) Anger ghaḍabun of min your Lord rabbikum so you broke fa-akhlaftum (the) promise to me mawʿidī
So Moses returned to his people, angry and grieved.1 He said, "O my people, did your Lord not make you a good promise?2 Then, was the time [of its fulfillment] too long for you, or did you wish that wrath from your Lord descend upon you, so you broke your promise [of obedience] to me?"
قَالُوا۟ They said qālū Not mā we broke akhlafnā promise to you mawʿidaka by our will bimalkinā but we walākinnā [we] were made to carry ḥummil'nā burdens awzāran from min ornaments zīnati (of) the people l-qawmi so we threw them faqadhafnāhā and thus fakadhālika threw alqā the Samiri l-sāmiriyu
They said, "We did not break our promise to you by our will, but we were made to carry burdens from the ornaments of the people [of Pharaoh], so we threw them [into the fire], and thus did the Sāmirī throw."
