قَالُوا۟

They said

qālū

يَـٰمُوسَىٰٓ

O Musa

yāmūsā

إِمَّآ

Either

immā

أَن

[that]

an

تُلْقِىَ

you throw

tul'qiya

وَإِمَّآ

or

wa-immā

أَن

[that]

an

نَّكُونَ

we will be

nakūna

أَوَّلَ

the first

awwala

مَنْ

who

man

أَلْقَىٰ

throws

alqā

٦٥

They said, "O Moses, either you throw or we will be the first to throw."

— Saheeh International

قَالَ

He said

qāla

بَلْ

Nay

bal

أَلْقُوا۟ ۖ

you throw

alqū

فَإِذَا

Then behold

fa-idhā

حِبَالُهُمْ

Their ropes

ḥibāluhum

وَعِصِيُّهُمْ

and their staffs

waʿiṣiyyuhum

يُخَيَّلُ

seemed

yukhayyalu

إِلَيْهِ

to him

ilayhi

مِن

by

min

سِحْرِهِمْ

their magic

siḥ'rihim

أَنَّهَا

that they

annahā

تَسْعَىٰ

(were) moving

tasʿā

٦٦

He said, "Rather, you throw." And suddenly their ropes and staffs seemed to him from their magic that they were moving [like snakes].

— Saheeh International

فَأَوْجَسَ

So sensed

fa-awjasa

فِى

in

نَفْسِهِۦ

himself

nafsihi

خِيفَةًۭ

a fear

khīfatan

مُّوسَىٰ

Musa

mūsā

٦٧

And he sensed within himself apprehension, did Moses.

— Saheeh International

قُلْنَا

We said

qul'nā

لَا

(Do) not

تَخَفْ

fear

takhaf

إِنَّكَ

Indeed, you

innaka

أَنتَ

you

anta

ٱلْأَعْلَىٰ

(will be) superior

l-aʿlā

٦٨

We [i.e., Allāh] said, "Fear not. Indeed, it is you who are superior.

— Saheeh International

وَأَلْقِ

And throw

wa-alqi

مَا

what

فِى

(is) in

يَمِينِكَ

your right hand

yamīnika

تَلْقَفْ

it will swallow up

talqaf

مَا

what

صَنَعُوٓا۟ ۖ

they have made

ṣanaʿū

إِنَّمَا

Only

innamā

صَنَعُوا۟

they (have) made

ṣanaʿū

كَيْدُ

a trick

kaydu

سَـٰحِرٍۢ ۖ

(of) a magician

sāḥirin

وَلَا

and not

walā

يُفْلِحُ

will be successful

yuf'liḥu

ٱلسَّاحِرُ

the magician

l-sāḥiru

حَيْثُ

wherever

ḥaythu

أَتَىٰ

he comes

atā

٦٩

And throw what is in your right hand; it will swallow up what they have crafted. What they have crafted is but the trick of a magician, and the magician will not succeed wherever he is."

— Saheeh International

فَأُلْقِىَ

So were thrown down

fa-ul'qiya

ٱلسَّحَرَةُ

the magicians

l-saḥaratu

سُجَّدًۭا

prostrating

sujjadan

قَالُوٓا۟

They said

qālū

ءَامَنَّا

We believe

āmannā

بِرَبِّ

in (the) Lord

birabbi

هَـٰرُونَ

(of) Harun

hārūna

وَمُوسَىٰ

and Musa

wamūsā

٧٠

So the magicians fell down in prostration.1 They said, "We have believed in the Lord of Aaron and Moses."

— Saheeh International

قَالَ

He said

qāla

ءَامَنتُمْ

You believe

āmantum

لَهُۥ

[to] him

lahu

قَبْلَ

before

qabla

أَنْ

[that]

an

ءَاذَنَ

I gave permission

ādhana

لَكُمْ ۖ

to you

lakum

إِنَّهُۥ

Indeed, he

innahu

لَكَبِيرُكُمُ

(is) your chief

lakabīrukumu

ٱلَّذِى

the one who

alladhī

عَلَّمَكُمُ

taught you

ʿallamakumu

ٱلسِّحْرَ ۖ

the magic

l-siḥ'ra

فَلَأُقَطِّعَنَّ

So surely I will cut off

fala-uqaṭṭiʿanna

أَيْدِيَكُمْ

your hands

aydiyakum

وَأَرْجُلَكُم

and your feet

wa-arjulakum

مِّنْ

of

min

خِلَـٰفٍۢ

opposite sides

khilāfin

وَلَأُصَلِّبَنَّكُمْ

and surely I will crucify you

wala-uṣallibannakum

فِى

on

جُذُوعِ

(the) trunks

judhūʿi

ٱلنَّخْلِ

(of) date-palms

l-nakhli

وَلَتَعْلَمُنَّ

and surely you will know

walataʿlamunna

أَيُّنَآ

which of us

ayyunā

أَشَدُّ

(is) more severe

ashaddu

عَذَابًۭا

(in) punishment

ʿadhāban

وَأَبْقَىٰ

and more lasting

wa-abqā

٧١

[Pharaoh] said, "You believed him [i.e., Moses] before I gave you permission. Indeed, he is your leader who has taught you magic. So I will surely cut off your hands and your feet on opposite sides, and I will crucify you on the trunks of palm trees, and you will surely know which of us is more severe in [giving] punishment and more enduring."

— Saheeh International

قَالُوا۟

They said

qālū

لَن

Never

lan

نُّؤْثِرَكَ

we will prefer you

nu'thiraka

عَلَىٰ

over

ʿalā

مَا

what

جَآءَنَا

has come to us

jāanā

مِنَ

of

mina

ٱلْبَيِّنَـٰتِ

the clear proofs

l-bayināti

وَٱلَّذِى

and the One Who

wa-alladhī

فَطَرَنَا ۖ

created us

faṭaranā

فَٱقْضِ

So decree

fa-iq'ḍi

مَآ

whatever

أَنتَ

you

anta

قَاضٍ ۖ

(are) decreeing

qāḍin

إِنَّمَا

Only

innamā

تَقْضِى

you can decree

taqḍī

هَـٰذِهِ

(for) this

hādhihi

ٱلْحَيَوٰةَ

life

l-ḥayata

ٱلدُّنْيَآ

(of) the world

l-dun'yā

٧٢

They said, "Never will we prefer you over what has come to us of clear proofs and [over] He who created us.1 So decree whatever you are to decree. You can only decree for this worldly life.

— Saheeh International

إِنَّآ

Indeed, [we]

innā

ءَامَنَّا

we believe

āmannā

بِرَبِّنَا

in our Lord

birabbinā

لِيَغْفِرَ

that He may forgive

liyaghfira

لَنَا

for us

lanā

خَطَـٰيَـٰنَا

our sins

khaṭāyānā

وَمَآ

and what

wamā

أَكْرَهْتَنَا

you compelled us

akrahtanā

عَلَيْهِ

on it

ʿalayhi

مِنَ

of

mina

ٱلسِّحْرِ ۗ

the magic

l-siḥ'ri

وَٱللَّهُ

And Allah

wal-lahu

خَيْرٌۭ

(is) Best

khayrun

وَأَبْقَىٰٓ

and Ever Lasting

wa-abqā

٧٣

Indeed, we have believed in our Lord that He may forgive us our sins and what you compelled us [to do] of magic. And Allāh is better and more enduring."1

— Saheeh International

إِنَّهُۥ

Indeed, he

innahu

مَن

who

man

يَأْتِ

comes

yati

رَبَّهُۥ

(to) his Lord

rabbahu

مُجْرِمًۭا

(as) a criminal

muj'riman

فَإِنَّ

then indeed

fa-inna

لَهُۥ

for him

lahu

جَهَنَّمَ

(is) Hell

jahannama

لَا

Not

يَمُوتُ

he will die

yamūtu

فِيهَا

in it

fīhā

وَلَا

and not

walā

يَحْيَىٰ

live

yaḥyā

٧٤

Indeed, whoever comes to his Lord as a criminal - indeed, for him is Hell; he will neither die therein nor live.

— Saheeh International

وَمَن

But whoever

waman

يَأْتِهِۦ

comes to Him

yatihi

مُؤْمِنًۭا

(as) a believer

mu'minan

قَدْ

verily

qad

عَمِلَ

he has done

ʿamila

ٱلصَّـٰلِحَـٰتِ

the righteous deeds

l-ṣāliḥāti

فَأُو۟لَـٰٓئِكَ

then those

fa-ulāika

لَهُمُ

for them

lahumu

ٱلدَّرَجَـٰتُ

(will be) the ranks

l-darajātu

ٱلْعُلَىٰ

[the] high

l-ʿulā

٧٥

But whoever comes to Him as a believer having done righteous deeds - for those will be the highest degrees [in position]:

— Saheeh International

جَنَّـٰتُ

Gardens

jannātu

عَدْنٍۢ

(of) Eden

ʿadnin

تَجْرِى

flows

tajrī

مِن

from

min

تَحْتِهَا

underneath them

taḥtihā

ٱلْأَنْهَـٰرُ

the rivers

l-anhāru

خَـٰلِدِينَ

abiding forever

khālidīna

فِيهَا ۚ

in it

fīhā

وَذَٰلِكَ

And that

wadhālika

جَزَآءُ

(is) the reward

jazāu

مَن

(for him) who

man

تَزَكَّىٰ

purifies himself

tazakkā

٧٦

Gardens of perpetual residence beneath which rivers flow, wherein they abide eternally. And that is the reward of one who purifies himself.1

— Saheeh International
