إِذْ When idh We inspired awḥaynā to ilā your mother ummika what mā is inspired yūḥā
When We inspired to your mother what We inspired,
أَنِ That ani cast him iq'dhifīhi in fī the chest l-tābūti then cast it fa-iq'dhifīhi in fī the river l-yami then let cast it falyul'qihi the river l-yamu on the bank bil-sāḥili will take him yakhudh'hu an enemy ʿaduwwun to Me lī and an enemy waʿaduwwun to him lahu And I cast wa-alqaytu over you ʿalayka love maḥabbatan from Me minnī and that you may be brought up walituṣ'naʿa under ʿalā My eye ʿaynī
[Saying], 'Cast him into the chest and cast it into the river, and the river will throw it onto the bank; there will take him an enemy to Me and an enemy to him.' And I bestowed upon you love from Me1 that you would be brought up under My eye [i.e., observation and care].
إِذْ When idh was going tamshī your sister ukh'tuka and she said fataqūlu Shall hal I show you adullukum [to] ʿalā (one) who man will nurse and rear him yakfuluhu So We returned you farajaʿnāka to ilā your mother ummika that kay may be cooled taqarra her eyes ʿaynuhā and not walā she grieves taḥzana And you killed waqatalta a man nafsan but We saved you fanajjaynāka from mina the distress l-ghami and We tried you wafatannāka (with) a trial futūnan Then you remained falabith'ta (some) years sinīna with fī (the) people ahli (of) Madyan madyana Then thumma you came ji'ta at ʿalā the decreed (time) qadarin O Musa yāmūsā
[And We favored you] when your sister went and said, 'Shall I direct you to someone who will be responsible for him?' So We restored you to your mother that she might be content and not grieve. And you killed someone,1 but We saved you from retaliation and tried you with a [severe] trial. And you remained [some] years among the people of Madyan. Then you came [here] at the decreed time, O Moses.
وَٱصْطَنَعْتُكَ And I (have) chosen you wa-iṣ'ṭanaʿtuka for Myself linafsī
And I produced you for Myself.1
ٱذْهَبْ Go idh'hab you anta and your brother wa-akhūka with My Signs biāyātī and (do) not walā slacken taniyā in fī My remembrance dhik'rī
Go, you and your brother, with My signs and do not slacken in My remembrance.
ٱذْهَبَآ Go, both of you idh'habā to ilā Firaun fir'ʿawna Indeed, he innahu (has) transgressed ṭaghā
Go, both of you, to Pharaoh. Indeed, he has transgressed.
فَقُولَا And speak faqūlā to him lahu a word qawlan gentle layyinan perhaps he laʿallahu may take heed yatadhakkaru or aw fear yakhshā
And speak to him with gentle speech that perhaps he may be reminded or fear [Allāh]."
قَالَا They said qālā Our Lord rabbanā Indeed, we innanā fear nakhāfu that an he will hasten yafruṭa against us ʿalaynā or aw that an he will transgress yaṭghā
They said, "Our Lord, indeed we are afraid that he will hasten [punishment] against us or that he will transgress."
قَالَ He said qāla (Do) not lā fear takhāfā Indeed, I Am innanī with you both maʿakumā I hear asmaʿu and I see wa-arā
[Allāh] said, "Fear not. Indeed, I am with you both; I hear and I see.
فَأْتِيَاهُ So go to him fatiyāhu and say faqūlā Indeed, we innā both (are) Messengers rasūlā (of) your Lord rabbika so send fa-arsil with us maʿanā (the) Children of Israel banī (the) Children of Israel is'rāīla and (do) not walā torment them tuʿadhib'hum Verily qad we came to you ji'nāka with a Sign biāyatin from min your Lord rabbika And peace wal-salāmu on ʿalā (one) who mani follows ittabaʿa the Guidance l-hudā
So go to him and say, 'Indeed, we are messengers of your Lord, so send with us the Children of Israel and do not torment them. We have come to you with a sign from your Lord. And peace1 will be upon he who follows the guidance.
إِنَّا Indeed, we innā verily qad it has been revealed ūḥiya to us ilaynā that anna the punishment l-ʿadhāba (will be) on ʿalā (one) who man denies kadhaba and turns away watawallā
Indeed, it has been revealed to us that the punishment will be upon whoever denies and turns away.'"
قَالَ He said qāla Then who faman (is) your Lord rabbukumā O Musa yāmūsā
[Pharaoh] said, "So who is the Lord of you two, O Moses?"
قَالَ He said qāla Our Lord rabbunā (is) the One Who alladhī gave aʿṭā (to) every kulla thing shayin its form khalqahu then thumma He guided (it) hadā
He said, "Our Lord is He who gave each thing its form and then guided [it]."
قَالَ He said qāla Then what famā (is the) case bālu (of) the generations l-qurūni (of) the former l-ūlā
[Pharaoh] said, "Then what is the case of the former generations?"
