إِذْ

When

idh

أَوْحَيْنَآ

We inspired

awḥaynā

إِلَىٰٓ

to

ilā

أُمِّكَ

your mother

ummika

مَا

what

يُوحَىٰٓ

is inspired

yūḥā

٣٨

When We inspired to your mother what We inspired,

— Saheeh International

أَنِ

That

ani

ٱقْذِفِيهِ

cast him

iq'dhifīhi

فِى

in

ٱلتَّابُوتِ

the chest

l-tābūti

فَٱقْذِفِيهِ

then cast it

fa-iq'dhifīhi

فِى

in

ٱلْيَمِّ

the river

l-yami

فَلْيُلْقِهِ

then let cast it

falyul'qihi

ٱلْيَمُّ

the river

l-yamu

بِٱلسَّاحِلِ

on the bank

bil-sāḥili

يَأْخُذْهُ

will take him

yakhudh'hu

عَدُوٌّۭ

an enemy

ʿaduwwun

لِّى

to Me

وَعَدُوٌّۭ

and an enemy

waʿaduwwun

لَّهُۥ ۚ

to him

lahu

وَأَلْقَيْتُ

And I cast

wa-alqaytu

عَلَيْكَ

over you

ʿalayka

مَحَبَّةًۭ

love

maḥabbatan

مِّنِّى

from Me

minnī

وَلِتُصْنَعَ

and that you may be brought up

walituṣ'naʿa

عَلَىٰ

under

ʿalā

عَيْنِىٓ

My eye

ʿaynī

٣٩

[Saying], 'Cast him into the chest and cast it into the river, and the river will throw it onto the bank; there will take him an enemy to Me and an enemy to him.' And I bestowed upon you love from Me1 that you would be brought up under My eye [i.e., observation and care].

— Saheeh International

إِذْ

When

idh

تَمْشِىٓ

was going

tamshī

أُخْتُكَ

your sister

ukh'tuka

فَتَقُولُ

and she said

fataqūlu

هَلْ

Shall

hal

أَدُلُّكُمْ

I show you

adullukum

عَلَىٰ

[to]

ʿalā

مَن

(one) who

man

يَكْفُلُهُۥ ۖ

will nurse and rear him

yakfuluhu

فَرَجَعْنَـٰكَ

So We returned you

farajaʿnāka

إِلَىٰٓ

to

ilā

أُمِّكَ

your mother

ummika

كَىْ

that

kay

تَقَرَّ

may be cooled

taqarra

عَيْنُهَا

her eyes

ʿaynuhā

وَلَا

and not

walā

تَحْزَنَ ۚ

she grieves

taḥzana

وَقَتَلْتَ

And you killed

waqatalta

نَفْسًۭا

a man

nafsan

فَنَجَّيْنَـٰكَ

but We saved you

fanajjaynāka

مِنَ

from

mina

ٱلْغَمِّ

the distress

l-ghami

وَفَتَنَّـٰكَ

and We tried you

wafatannāka

فُتُونًۭا ۚ

(with) a trial

futūnan

فَلَبِثْتَ

Then you remained

falabith'ta

سِنِينَ

(some) years

sinīna

فِىٓ

with

أَهْلِ

(the) people

ahli

مَدْيَنَ

(of) Madyan

madyana

ثُمَّ

Then

thumma

جِئْتَ

you came

ji'ta

عَلَىٰ

at

ʿalā

قَدَرٍۢ

the decreed (time)

qadarin

يَـٰمُوسَىٰ

O Musa

yāmūsā

٤٠

[And We favored you] when your sister went and said, 'Shall I direct you to someone who will be responsible for him?' So We restored you to your mother that she might be content and not grieve. And you killed someone,1 but We saved you from retaliation and tried you with a [severe] trial. And you remained [some] years among the people of Madyan. Then you came [here] at the decreed time, O Moses.

— Saheeh International

وَٱصْطَنَعْتُكَ

And I (have) chosen you

wa-iṣ'ṭanaʿtuka

لِنَفْسِى

for Myself

linafsī

٤١

And I produced you for Myself.1

— Saheeh International

ٱذْهَبْ

Go

idh'hab

أَنتَ

you

anta

وَأَخُوكَ

and your brother

wa-akhūka

بِـَٔايَـٰتِى

with My Signs

biāyātī

وَلَا

and (do) not

walā

تَنِيَا

slacken

taniyā

فِى

in

ذِكْرِى

My remembrance

dhik'rī

٤٢

Go, you and your brother, with My signs and do not slacken in My remembrance.

— Saheeh International

ٱذْهَبَآ

Go, both of you

idh'habā

إِلَىٰ

to

ilā

فِرْعَوْنَ

Firaun

fir'ʿawna

إِنَّهُۥ

Indeed, he

innahu

طَغَىٰ

(has) transgressed

ṭaghā

٤٣

Go, both of you, to Pharaoh. Indeed, he has transgressed.

— Saheeh International

فَقُولَا

And speak

faqūlā

لَهُۥ

to him

lahu

قَوْلًۭا

a word

qawlan

لَّيِّنًۭا

gentle

layyinan

لَّعَلَّهُۥ

perhaps he

laʿallahu

يَتَذَكَّرُ

may take heed

yatadhakkaru

أَوْ

or

aw

يَخْشَىٰ

fear

yakhshā

٤٤

And speak to him with gentle speech that perhaps he may be reminded or fear [Allāh]."

— Saheeh International

قَالَا

They said

qālā

رَبَّنَآ

Our Lord

rabbanā

إِنَّنَا

Indeed, we

innanā

نَخَافُ

fear

nakhāfu

أَن

that

an

يَفْرُطَ

he will hasten

yafruṭa

عَلَيْنَآ

against us

ʿalaynā

أَوْ

or

aw

أَن

that

an

يَطْغَىٰ

he will transgress

yaṭghā

٤٥

They said, "Our Lord, indeed we are afraid that he will hasten [punishment] against us or that he will transgress."

— Saheeh International

قَالَ

He said

qāla

لَا

(Do) not

تَخَافَآ ۖ

fear

takhāfā

إِنَّنِى

Indeed, I Am

innanī

مَعَكُمَآ

with you both

maʿakumā

أَسْمَعُ

I hear

asmaʿu

وَأَرَىٰ

and I see

wa-arā

٤٦

[Allāh] said, "Fear not. Indeed, I am with you both; I hear and I see.

— Saheeh International

فَأْتِيَاهُ

So go to him

fatiyāhu

فَقُولَآ

and say

faqūlā

إِنَّا

Indeed, we

innā

رَسُولَا

both (are) Messengers

rasūlā

رَبِّكَ

(of) your Lord

rabbika

فَأَرْسِلْ

so send

fa-arsil

مَعَنَا

with us

maʿanā

بَنِىٓ

(the) Children of Israel

banī

إِسْرَٰٓءِيلَ

(the) Children of Israel

is'rāīla

وَلَا

and (do) not

walā

تُعَذِّبْهُمْ ۖ

torment them

tuʿadhib'hum

قَدْ

Verily

qad

جِئْنَـٰكَ

we came to you

ji'nāka

بِـَٔايَةٍۢ

with a Sign

biāyatin

مِّن

from

min

رَّبِّكَ ۖ

your Lord

rabbika

وَٱلسَّلَـٰمُ

And peace

wal-salāmu

عَلَىٰ

on

ʿalā

مَنِ

(one) who

mani

ٱتَّبَعَ

follows

ittabaʿa

ٱلْهُدَىٰٓ

the Guidance

l-hudā

٤٧

So go to him and say, 'Indeed, we are messengers of your Lord, so send with us the Children of Israel and do not torment them. We have come to you with a sign from your Lord. And peace1 will be upon he who follows the guidance.

— Saheeh International

إِنَّا

Indeed, we

innā

قَدْ

verily

qad

أُوحِىَ

it has been revealed

ūḥiya

إِلَيْنَآ

to us

ilaynā

أَنَّ

that

anna

ٱلْعَذَابَ

the punishment

l-ʿadhāba

عَلَىٰ

(will be) on

ʿalā

مَن

(one) who

man

كَذَّبَ

denies

kadhaba

وَتَوَلَّىٰ

and turns away

watawallā

٤٨

Indeed, it has been revealed to us that the punishment will be upon whoever denies and turns away.'"

— Saheeh International

قَالَ

He said

qāla

فَمَن

Then who

faman

رَّبُّكُمَا

(is) your Lord

rabbukumā

يَـٰمُوسَىٰ

O Musa

yāmūsā

٤٩

[Pharaoh] said, "So who is the Lord of you two, O Moses?"

— Saheeh International

قَالَ

He said

qāla

رَبُّنَا

Our Lord

rabbunā

ٱلَّذِىٓ

(is) the One Who

alladhī

أَعْطَىٰ

gave

aʿṭā

كُلَّ

(to) every

kulla

شَىْءٍ

thing

shayin

خَلْقَهُۥ

its form

khalqahu

ثُمَّ

then

thumma

هَدَىٰ

He guided (it)

hadā

٥٠

He said, "Our Lord is He who gave each thing its form and then guided [it]."

— Saheeh International

قَالَ

He said

qāla

فَمَا

Then what

famā

بَالُ

(is the) case

bālu

ٱلْقُرُونِ

(of) the generations

l-qurūni

ٱلْأُولَىٰ

(of) the former

l-ūlā

٥١

[Pharaoh] said, "Then what is the case of the former generations?"

— Saheeh International
