إِنَّا

Indeed, We

innā

مَكَّنَّا

[We] established

makkannā

لَهُۥ

[for] him

lahu

فِى

in

ٱلْأَرْضِ

the earth

l-arḍi

وَءَاتَيْنَـٰهُ

and We gave him

waātaynāhu

مِن

of

min

كُلِّ

every

kulli

شَىْءٍۢ

thing

shayin

سَبَبًۭا

a means

sababan

٨٤

Indeed, We established him upon the earth, and We gave him from everything a way [i.e., means].

— Saheeh International

فَأَتْبَعَ

So he followed

fa-atbaʿa

سَبَبًا

a course

sababan

٨٥

So he followed a way

— Saheeh International

حَتَّىٰٓ

Until

ḥattā

إِذَا

when

idhā

بَلَغَ

he reached

balagha

مَغْرِبَ

(the) setting place

maghriba

ٱلشَّمْسِ

(of) the sun

l-shamsi

وَجَدَهَا

he found it

wajadahā

تَغْرُبُ

setting

taghrubu

فِى

in

عَيْنٍ

a spring

ʿaynin

حَمِئَةٍۢ

(of) dark mud

ḥami-atin

وَوَجَدَ

and he found

wawajada

عِندَهَا

near it

ʿindahā

قَوْمًۭا ۗ

a community

qawman

قُلْنَا

We said

qul'nā

يَـٰذَا

O Dhul-qarnain

yādhā

ٱلْقَرْنَيْنِ

O Dhul-qarnain

l-qarnayni

إِمَّآ

Either

immā

أَن

[that]

an

تُعَذِّبَ

you punish

tuʿadhiba

وَإِمَّآ

or

wa-immā

أَن

[that]

an

تَتَّخِذَ

you take

tattakhidha

فِيهِمْ

[in] them

fīhim

حُسْنًۭا

(with) goodness

ḥus'nan

٨٦

Until, when he reached the setting of the sun [i.e., the west], he found it [as if] setting in a body of dark water,1 and he found near it a people. We [i.e., Allāh] said, "O Dhul-Qarnayn, either you punish [them] or else adopt among them [a way of] goodness."

— Saheeh International

قَالَ

He said

qāla

أَمَّا

As for

ammā

مَن

(one) who

man

ظَلَمَ

wrongs

ẓalama

فَسَوْفَ

then soon

fasawfa

نُعَذِّبُهُۥ

we will punish him

nuʿadhibuhu

ثُمَّ

Then

thumma

يُرَدُّ

he will be returned

yuraddu

إِلَىٰ

to

ilā

رَبِّهِۦ

his Lord

rabbihi

فَيُعَذِّبُهُۥ

and He will punish him

fayuʿadhibuhu

عَذَابًۭا

(with) a punishment

ʿadhāban

نُّكْرًۭا

terrible

nuk'ran

٨٧

He said, "As for one who wrongs,1 we will punish him. Then he will be returned to his Lord, and He will punish him with a terrible punishment [i.e., Hellfire].

— Saheeh International

وَأَمَّا

But as for

wa-ammā

مَنْ

(one) who

man

ءَامَنَ

believes

āmana

وَعَمِلَ

and does

waʿamila

صَـٰلِحًۭا

righteous (deeds)

ṣāliḥan

فَلَهُۥ

then for him

falahu

جَزَآءً

(is) a reward

jazāan

ٱلْحُسْنَىٰ ۖ

good

l-ḥus'nā

وَسَنَقُولُ

And we will speak

wasanaqūlu

لَهُۥ

to him

lahu

مِنْ

from

min

أَمْرِنَا

our command

amrinā

يُسْرًۭا

(with) ease

yus'ran

٨٨

But as for one who believes and does righteousness, he will have a reward of the best [i.e., Paradise], and we [i.e., Dhul-Qarnayn] will speak to him from our command with ease."

— Saheeh International

ثُمَّ

Then

Then he followed a way

— Saheeh International

حَتَّىٰٓ

Until

ḥattā

إِذَا

he reached

(the) rising place

maṭliʿa

ٱلشَّمْسِ

(of) the sun

l-shamsi

وَجَدَهَا

and he found it

wajadahā

تَطْلُعُ

rising

taṭluʿu

عَلَىٰ

on

ʿalā

قَوْمٍۢ

a community

qawmin

لَّمْ

not

lam

نَجْعَل

We made

najʿal

لَّهُم

for them

lahum

مِّن

against it

min

دُونِهَا

against it

dūnihā

سِتْرًۭا

any shelter

sit'ran

٩٠

Until, when he came to the rising of the sun [i.e., the east], he found it rising on a people for whom We had not made against it any shield.

— Saheeh International

كَذَٰلِكَ

Thus

kadhālika

وَقَدْ

And verily

waqad

أَحَطْنَا

We encompassed

aḥaṭnā

بِمَا

of what

bimā

لَدَيْهِ

(was) with him

ladayhi

خُبْرًۭا

(of the) information

khub'ran

٩١

Thus.1 And We had encompassed [all] that he had in knowledge.

— Saheeh International

ثُمَّ

Then

thumma

أَتْبَعَ

he followed

atbaʿa

سَبَبًا

a course

sababan

٩٢

Then he followed a way.

— Saheeh International

حَتَّىٰٓ

Until

ḥattā

إِذَا

when

idhā

بَلَغَ

he reached

balagha

بَيْنَ

between

bayna

ٱلسَّدَّيْنِ

the two mountains

l-sadayni

وَجَدَ

he found

wajada

مِن

besides them

min

دُونِهِمَا

besides them

dūnihimā

قَوْمًۭا

a community

qawman

لَّا

not

يَكَادُونَ

who would almost

yakādūna

يَفْقَهُونَ

understand

yafqahūna

قَوْلًۭا

(his) speech

qawlan

٩٣

Until, when he reached [a pass] between two mountains, he found beside them a people who could hardly understand [his] speech.

— Saheeh International

قَالُوا۟

They said

qālū

يَـٰذَا

O Dhul-qarnain

yādhā

ٱلْقَرْنَيْنِ

O Dhul-qarnain

l-qarnayni

إِنَّ

Indeed

inna

يَأْجُوجَ

Yajuj

yajūja

وَمَأْجُوجَ

and Majuj

wamajūja

مُفْسِدُونَ

(are) corrupters

muf'sidūna

فِى

in

ٱلْأَرْضِ

the land

l-arḍi

فَهَلْ

So may

fahal

نَجْعَلُ

we make

najʿalu

لَكَ

for you

laka

خَرْجًا

an expenditure

kharjan

عَلَىٰٓ

[on]

ʿalā

أَن

that

an

تَجْعَلَ

you make

tajʿala

بَيْنَنَا

between us

baynanā

وَبَيْنَهُمْ

and between them

wabaynahum

سَدًّۭا

a barrier

saddan

٩٤

They said, "O Dhul-Qarnayn, indeed Gog and Magog1 are [great] corrupters in the land. So may we assign for you an expenditure that you might make between us and them a barrier?"

— Saheeh International

قَالَ

He said

qāla

مَا

What

مَكَّنِّى

has established me

makkannī

فِيهِ

[in it]

fīhi

رَبِّى

my Lord

rabbī

خَيْرٌۭ

(is) better

khayrun

فَأَعِينُونِى

but assist me

fa-aʿīnūnī

بِقُوَّةٍ

with strength

biquwwatin

أَجْعَلْ

I will make

ajʿal

بَيْنَكُمْ

between you

baynakum

وَبَيْنَهُمْ

and between them

wabaynahum

رَدْمًا

a barrier

radman

٩٥

He said, "That in which my Lord has established me is better [than what you offer], but assist me with strength [i.e., manpower]; I will make between you and them a dam.

— Saheeh International

ءَاتُونِى

Bring me

ātūnī

زُبَرَ

sheets

zubara

ٱلْحَدِيدِ ۖ

(of) iron

l-ḥadīdi

حَتَّىٰٓ

until

ḥattā

إِذَا

when

idhā

سَاوَىٰ

he (had) leveled

sāwā

بَيْنَ

between

bayna

ٱلصَّدَفَيْنِ

the two cliffs

l-ṣadafayni

قَالَ

he said

qāla

ٱنفُخُوا۟ ۖ

Blow

unfukhū

حَتَّىٰٓ

until

ḥattā

إِذَا

when

idhā

جَعَلَهُۥ

he made it

jaʿalahu

نَارًۭا

fire

nāran

قَالَ

he said

qāla

ءَاتُونِىٓ

Bring me

ātūnī

أُفْرِغْ

I pour

uf'righ

عَلَيْهِ

over it

ʿalayhi

قِطْرًۭا

molten copper

qiṭ'ran

٩٦

Bring me bars of iron" - until, when he had leveled [them] between the two mountain walls, he said, "Blow [with bellows]," until when he had made it [like] fire, he said, "Bring me, that I may pour over it molten copper."

— Saheeh International

فَمَا

So not

famā

ٱسْطَـٰعُوٓا۟

they were able

is'ṭāʿū

أَن

to

an

يَظْهَرُوهُ

scale it

yaẓharūhu

وَمَا

and not

wamā

ٱسْتَطَـٰعُوا۟

they were able

is'taṭāʿū

لَهُۥ

in it

lahu

نَقْبًۭا

(to do) any penetration

naqban

٩٧

So they [i.e., Gog and Magog] were unable to pass over it, nor were they able [to effect] in it any penetration.

— Saheeh International
