۞ قَالَ He said qāla Did not alam I say aqul to you laka that you innaka never lan will be able tastaṭīʿa with me maʿiya (to have) patience ṣabran
[Al-Khiḍr] said, "Did I not tell you that with me you would never be able to have patience?"
قَالَ He said qāla If in I ask you sa-altuka about ʿan anything shayin after it baʿdahā then (do) not falā keep me as a companion tuṣāḥib'nī Verily qad you have reached balaghta from me min from me ladunnī an excuse ʿudh'ran
[Moses] said, "If I should ask you about anything after this, then do not keep me as a companion. You have obtained from me an excuse."
فَٱنطَلَقَا So they set out fa-inṭalaqā until ḥattā when idhā they came atayā (to the) people ahla (of) a town qaryatin they asked for food is'taṭʿamā (from) its people ahlahā but they refused fa-abaw to an offer them hospitality yuḍayyifūhumā Then they found fawajadā in it fīhā a wall jidāran (that) want(ed) yurīdu to an collapse yanqaḍḍa so he set it straight fa-aqāmahu He said qāla If law you wished shi'ta surely you (could) have taken lattakhadhta for it ʿalayhi a payment ajran
So they set out, until when they came to the people of a town, they asked its people for food, but they refused to offer them hospitality. And they found therein a wall about to collapse, so he [i.e., al-Khiḍr] restored it. [Moses] said, "If you wished, you could have taken for it a payment."
قَالَ He said qāla This hādhā (is) parting firāqu between me baynī and between you wabaynika I will inform you sa-unabbi-uka of (the) interpretation bitawīli (of) what mā not lam you were able tastaṭiʿ on it ʿalayhi (to have) patience ṣabran
[Al-Khiḍr] said, "This is parting between me and you. I will inform you of the interpretation of that about which you could not have patience.
أَمَّا As for ammā the ship l-safīnatu it was fakānat of (the) poor people limasākīna working yaʿmalūna in fī the sea l-baḥri So I intended fa-aradttu that an I cause defect (in) it aʿībahā (as there) was wakāna after them warāahum a king malikun who seized yakhudhu every kulla ship safīnatin (by) force ghaṣban
As for the ship, it belonged to poor people working at sea. So I intended to cause defect in it as there was after them a king who seized every [good] ship by force.
وَأَمَّا And as for wa-ammā the boy l-ghulāmu his parents were fakāna his parents were abawāhu believers mu'minayni and we feared fakhashīnā that an he would overburden them yur'hiqahumā (by) transgression ṭugh'yānan and disbelief wakuf'ran
And as for the boy, his parents were believers, and we feared that he would overburden them by transgression and disbelief.
فَأَرَدْنَآ So we intended fa-aradnā that an would change for them yub'dilahumā their Lord rabbuhumā a better khayran than him min'hu (in) purity zakatan and nearer wa-aqraba (in) affection ruḥ'man
So we intended that their Lord should substitute for them one better than him in purity and nearer to mercy.
وَأَمَّا And as for wa-ammā the wall l-jidāru it was fakāna for two orphan boys lighulāmayni for two orphan boys yatīmayni in fī the town l-madīnati and was wakāna underneath it taḥtahu a treasure kanzun for them lahumā and was wakāna their father abūhumā righteous ṣāliḥan So intended fa-arāda your Lord rabbuka that an they reach yablughā their maturity ashuddahumā and bring forth wayastakhrijā their treasure kanzahumā (as) a mercy raḥmatan from min your Lord rabbika And not wamā I did it faʿaltuhu on ʿan my (own) accord amrī That dhālika (is the) interpretation tawīlu (of) what mā not lam you were able tasṭiʿ on it ʿalayhi (to have) patience ṣabran
And as for the wall, it belonged to two orphan boys in the city, and there was beneath it a treasure for them, and their father had been righteous. So your Lord intended that they reach maturity and extract their treasure, as a mercy from your Lord. And I did it not of my own accord. That is the interpretation of that about which you could not have patience."
وَيَسْـَٔلُونَكَ And they ask you wayasalūnaka about ʿan Dhul-qarnain dhī Dhul-qarnain l-qarnayni Say qul I will recite sa-atlū to you ʿalaykum about him min'hu a remembrance dhik'ran
And they ask you, [O Muḥammad], about Dhul-Qarnayn. Say, "I will recite to you about him a report."
