فَلَمَّا Then when falammā they had passed beyond jāwazā he said qāla to his boy lifatāhu Bring us ātinā our morning meal ghadāanā Certainly laqad we have suffered laqīnā in min our journey safarinā this hādhā fatigue naṣaban
So when they had passed beyond it, [Moses] said to his boy, "Bring us our morning meal. We have certainly suffered in this, our journey, [much] fatigue."
قَالَ He said qāla Did you see ara-ayta when idh we retired awaynā to ilā the rock l-ṣakhrati Then indeed, I fa-innī [I] forgot nasītu the fish l-ḥūta And not wamā made me forget it ansānīhu except illā the Shaitaan l-shayṭānu that an I mention it adhkurahu And it took wa-ittakhadha its way sabīlahu into fī the sea l-baḥri amazingly ʿajaban
He said, "Did you see when we retired to the rock? Indeed, I forgot [there] the fish. And none made me forget it except Satan - that I should mention it. And it took its course into the sea amazingly."
قَالَ He said qāla That dhālika (is) what mā we were kunnā seeking nabghi So they returned fa-ir'taddā on ʿalā their footprints āthārihimā retracing qaṣaṣan
[Moses] said, "That is what we were seeking." So they returned, following their footprints.
فَوَجَدَا Then they found fawajadā a servant ʿabdan from min Our servants ʿibādinā whom We had given ātaynāhu mercy raḥmatan from min Us ʿindinā and We had taught him waʿallamnāhu from min Us ladunnā a knowledge ʿil'man
And they found a servant from among Our servants [i.e., al-Khiḍr] to whom We had given mercy from Us and had taught him from Us a [certain] knowledge.
قَالَ Said qāla to him lahu Musa mūsā May hal I follow you attabiʿuka on ʿalā that an you teach me tuʿallimani of what mimmā you have been taught ʿullim'ta (of) right guidance rush'dan
Moses said to him, "May I follow you on [the condition] that you teach me from what you have been taught of sound judgement?"
قَالَ He said qāla Indeed, you innaka never lan will be able tastaṭīʿa with me maʿiya (to have) patience ṣabran
He said, "Indeed, with me you will never be able to have patience.
وَكَيْفَ And how can wakayfa you have patience taṣbiru for ʿalā what mā not lam you encompass tuḥiṭ of it bihi any knowledge khub'ran
And how can you have patience for what you do not encompass in knowledge?"
قَالَ He said qāla You will find me satajidunī if in Allah wills shāa Allah wills l-lahu patient ṣābiran and not walā I will disobey aʿṣī your laka order amran
[Moses] said, "You will find me, if Allāh wills, patient, and I will not disobey you in [any] order."
قَالَ He said qāla Then if fa-ini you follow me ittabaʿtanī (do) not falā ask me tasalnī about ʿan anything shayin until ḥattā I present uḥ'ditha to you laka of it min'hu a mention dhik'ran
He said, "Then if you follow me, do not ask me about anything until I make to you about it mention [i.e., explanation]."
فَٱنطَلَقَا So they both set out fa-inṭalaqā until ḥattā when idhā they had embarked rakibā on fī the ship l-safīnati he made a hole in it kharaqahā He said qāla Have you made a hole in it akharaqtahā to drown litugh'riqa its people ahlahā Certainly laqad you have done ji'ta a thing shayan grave im'ran
So they set out, until when they had embarked on the ship, he [i.e., al-Khiḍr] tore it open. [Moses] said, "Have you torn it open to drown its people? You have certainly done a grave thing."
قَالَ He said qāla Did not alam I say aqul indeed, you innaka never lan will be able tastaṭīʿa with me maʿiya (to have) patience ṣabran
[Al-Khiḍr] said, "Did I not say that with me you would never be able to have patience?"
قَالَ He said qāla (Do) not lā blame me tuākhidh'nī for what bimā I forgot nasītu and (do) not walā be hard (upon) me tur'hiq'nī in min my affair amrī (raising) difficulty ʿus'ran
[Moses] said, "Do not blame me for what I forgot and do not overwhelm me in my matter with difficulty."
فَٱنطَلَقَا Then they both set out fa-inṭalaqā until ḥattā when idhā they met laqiyā a boy ghulāman then he killed him faqatalahu He said qāla Have you killed aqatalta a soul nafsan pure zakiyyatan for other than bighayri a soul nafsin Certainly laqad you have done ji'ta a thing shayan evil nuk'ran
So they set out, until when they met a boy, he [i.e., al-Khiḍr] killed him. [Moses] said, "Have you killed a pure soul for other than [having killed] a soul? You have certainly done a deplorable thing."
