فَلَمَّا

Then when

falammā

جَاوَزَا

they had passed beyond

jāwazā

قَالَ

he said

qāla

لِفَتَىٰهُ

to his boy

lifatāhu

ءَاتِنَا

Bring us

ātinā

غَدَآءَنَا

our morning meal

ghadāanā

لَقَدْ

Certainly

laqad

لَقِينَا

we have suffered

laqīnā

مِن

in

min

سَفَرِنَا

our journey

safarinā

هَـٰذَا

this

hādhā

نَصَبًۭا

fatigue

naṣaban

٦٢

So when they had passed beyond it, [Moses] said to his boy, "Bring us our morning meal. We have certainly suffered in this, our journey, [much] fatigue."

— Saheeh International

قَالَ

He said

qāla

أَرَءَيْتَ

Did you see

ara-ayta

إِذْ

when

idh

أَوَيْنَآ

we retired

awaynā

إِلَى

to

ilā

ٱلصَّخْرَةِ

the rock

l-ṣakhrati

فَإِنِّى

Then indeed, I

fa-innī

نَسِيتُ

[I] forgot

nasītu

ٱلْحُوتَ

the fish

l-ḥūta

وَمَآ

And not

wamā

أَنسَىٰنِيهُ

made me forget it

ansānīhu

إِلَّا

except

illā

ٱلشَّيْطَـٰنُ

the Shaitaan

l-shayṭānu

أَنْ

that

an

أَذْكُرَهُۥ ۚ

I mention it

adhkurahu

وَٱتَّخَذَ

And it took

wa-ittakhadha

سَبِيلَهُۥ

its way

sabīlahu

فِى

into

ٱلْبَحْرِ

the sea

l-baḥri

عَجَبًۭا

amazingly

ʿajaban

٦٣

He said, "Did you see when we retired to the rock? Indeed, I forgot [there] the fish. And none made me forget it except Satan - that I should mention it. And it took its course into the sea amazingly."

— Saheeh International

قَالَ

He said

qāla

ذَٰلِكَ

That

dhālika

مَا

(is) what

كُنَّا

we were

kunnā

نَبْغِ ۚ

seeking

nabghi

فَٱرْتَدَّا

So they returned

fa-ir'taddā

عَلَىٰٓ

on

ʿalā

ءَاثَارِهِمَا

their footprints

āthārihimā

قَصَصًۭا

retracing

qaṣaṣan

٦٤

[Moses] said, "That is what we were seeking." So they returned, following their footprints.

— Saheeh International

فَوَجَدَا

Then they found

fawajadā

عَبْدًۭا

a servant

ʿabdan

مِّنْ

from

min

عِبَادِنَآ

Our servants

ʿibādinā

ءَاتَيْنَـٰهُ

whom We had given

ātaynāhu

رَحْمَةًۭ

mercy

raḥmatan

مِّنْ

from

min

عِندِنَا

Us

ʿindinā

وَعَلَّمْنَـٰهُ

and We had taught him

waʿallamnāhu

مِن

from

min

لَّدُنَّا

Us

ladunnā

عِلْمًۭا

a knowledge

ʿil'man

٦٥

And they found a servant from among Our servants [i.e., al-Khiḍr] to whom We had given mercy from Us and had taught him from Us a [certain] knowledge.

— Saheeh International

قَالَ

Said

qāla

لَهُۥ

to him

lahu

مُوسَىٰ

Musa

mūsā

هَلْ

May

hal

أَتَّبِعُكَ

I follow you

attabiʿuka

عَلَىٰٓ

on

ʿalā

أَن

that

an

تُعَلِّمَنِ

you teach me

tuʿallimani

مِمَّا

of what

mimmā

عُلِّمْتَ

you have been taught

ʿullim'ta

رُشْدًۭا

(of) right guidance

rush'dan

٦٦

Moses said to him, "May I follow you on [the condition] that you teach me from what you have been taught of sound judgement?"

— Saheeh International

قَالَ

He said

qāla

إِنَّكَ

Indeed, you

innaka

لَن

never

lan

تَسْتَطِيعَ

will be able

tastaṭīʿa

مَعِىَ

with me

maʿiya

صَبْرًۭا

(to have) patience

ṣabran

٦٧

He said, "Indeed, with me you will never be able to have patience.

— Saheeh International

وَكَيْفَ

And how can

wakayfa

تَصْبِرُ

you have patience

taṣbiru

عَلَىٰ

for

ʿalā

مَا

what

لَمْ

not

lam

تُحِطْ

you encompass

tuḥiṭ

بِهِۦ

of it

bihi

خُبْرًۭا

any knowledge

khub'ran

٦٨

And how can you have patience for what you do not encompass in knowledge?"

— Saheeh International

قَالَ

He said

qāla

سَتَجِدُنِىٓ

You will find me

satajidunī

إِن

if

in

شَآءَ

Allah wills

shāa

ٱللَّهُ

Allah wills

l-lahu

صَابِرًۭا

patient

ṣābiran

وَلَآ

and not

walā

أَعْصِى

I will disobey

aʿṣī

لَكَ

your

laka

أَمْرًۭا

order

amran

٦٩

[Moses] said, "You will find me, if Allāh wills, patient, and I will not disobey you in [any] order."

— Saheeh International

قَالَ

He said

qāla

فَإِنِ

Then if

fa-ini

ٱتَّبَعْتَنِى

you follow me

ittabaʿtanī

فَلَا

(do) not

falā

تَسْـَٔلْنِى

ask me

tasalnī

عَن

about

ʿan

شَىْءٍ

anything

shayin

حَتَّىٰٓ

until

ḥattā

أُحْدِثَ

I present

uḥ'ditha

لَكَ

to you

laka

مِنْهُ

of it

min'hu

ذِكْرًۭا

a mention

dhik'ran

٧٠

He said, "Then if you follow me, do not ask me about anything until I make to you about it mention [i.e., explanation]."

— Saheeh International

فَٱنطَلَقَا

So they both set out

fa-inṭalaqā

حَتَّىٰٓ

until

ḥattā

إِذَا

when

idhā

رَكِبَا

they had embarked

rakibā

فِى

on

ٱلسَّفِينَةِ

the ship

l-safīnati

خَرَقَهَا ۖ

he made a hole in it

kharaqahā

قَالَ

He said

qāla

أَخَرَقْتَهَا

Have you made a hole in it

akharaqtahā

لِتُغْرِقَ

to drown

litugh'riqa

أَهْلَهَا

its people

ahlahā

لَقَدْ

Certainly

laqad

جِئْتَ

you have done

ji'ta

شَيْـًٔا

a thing

shayan

إِمْرًۭا

grave

im'ran

٧١

So they set out, until when they had embarked on the ship, he [i.e., al-Khiḍr] tore it open. [Moses] said, "Have you torn it open to drown its people? You have certainly done a grave thing."

— Saheeh International

قَالَ

He said

qāla

أَلَمْ

Did not

alam

أَقُلْ

I say

aqul

إِنَّكَ

indeed, you

innaka

لَن

never

lan

تَسْتَطِيعَ

will be able

tastaṭīʿa

مَعِىَ

with me

maʿiya

صَبْرًۭا

(to have) patience

ṣabran

٧٢

[Al-Khiḍr] said, "Did I not say that with me you would never be able to have patience?"

— Saheeh International

قَالَ

He said

qāla

لَا

(Do) not

تُؤَاخِذْنِى

blame me

tuākhidh'nī

بِمَا

for what

bimā

نَسِيتُ

I forgot

nasītu

وَلَا

and (do) not

walā

تُرْهِقْنِى

be hard (upon) me

tur'hiq'nī

مِنْ

in

min

أَمْرِى

my affair

amrī

عُسْرًۭا

(raising) difficulty

ʿus'ran

٧٣

[Moses] said, "Do not blame me for what I forgot and do not overwhelm me in my matter with difficulty."

— Saheeh International

فَٱنطَلَقَا

Then they both set out

fa-inṭalaqā

حَتَّىٰٓ

until

ḥattā

إِذَا

when

idhā

لَقِيَا

they met

laqiyā

غُلَـٰمًۭا

a boy

ghulāman

فَقَتَلَهُۥ

then he killed him

faqatalahu

قَالَ

He said

qāla

أَقَتَلْتَ

Have you killed

aqatalta

نَفْسًۭا

a soul

nafsan

زَكِيَّةًۢ

pure

zakiyyatan

بِغَيْرِ

for other than

bighayri

نَفْسٍۢ

a soul

nafsin

لَّقَدْ

Certainly

laqad

جِئْتَ

you have done

ji'ta

شَيْـًۭٔا

a thing

shayan

نُّكْرًۭا

evil

nuk'ran

٧٤

So they set out, until when they met a boy, he [i.e., al-Khiḍr] killed him. [Moses] said, "Have you killed a pure soul for other than [having killed] a soul? You have certainly done a deplorable thing."

— Saheeh International
